Causes: Arts & Culture, Opera
Mission: Opera theatre's mission is to shape the future of opera and to connect diverse audiences through its power and beauty. To accomplish our mission, we produce a world-class opera festival, we champion new works, we build new audiences, we educate and engage our community, and we nurture the finest opera artists, artisans, and administratiors of each generation. By doing so, we strengthen the cultural and economic vitality of the st. Louis community.
Programs: The 2017 festival season included productions of madame butterfly, the grapes of wrath, the trial, and la clemenza di tito. The operas featured primarily young american singers in productions conceived and led by internationally renowned conductors, stage directors and designers. The saint louis symphony orchestra accompanies all performances. Sets, props, costumes and lighting were executed by professional technicians and craftspeople. 22,430 attended the festival season.
education and community engagement programs reached 7,888 students in 101 schools and 61 zip codes and 6,184 adults during the year. Programs included a series of informal artists in residence concerts, vocal instruction and coaching for advanced music students from local schools culminating in a public recital and scholarship awards, panel discussions about each opera performed, and a year long curriculum based opera program used in st. Louis public schools. Additional programs were presented to public, private and parochial schools by former members of the gerdine young artists program aimed at teaching youth the basics of operatic singing and costuming.
