Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education

Mission: OpenNLP is a research lab that focuses on bringing the work within emerging subfields of natural language processing to the real world. There's so much research out there that's potential hasn't been realized yet, with groundbreaking models often being relegated to GitHub repositories that are inaccessible to the general public and marginalized communities who need it the most. At OpenNLP, we focus on uniting global collaborators to work on paid and research projects that push the boundaries of natural language processing. We don’t stop at publishing papers– we make research accessible and understood by all.

The Linguistics Justice League is the perfect organization for me to get involved with because it combines linguistics with technology and data science. Although I have only just started learning about data science, I plan to take more classes and complete a minor in Data Science at my university. I especially love how LJL focuses on teaching English to children since it's so important that people learn languages sooner rather than later in order to learn them best.

I immigrated to the US myself and am looking for an organization that helps kids learn languages. I am interested in supporting LJL's mission.

It was great working with the enthusiastic volunteers at LJL who are passionate about technology. There are many reasons but most of all it's the conviction that the work we are doing is going to create real ground-level impact. Moreover, it excites me that it will be helpful for many immigrants trying to find their place in an unknown country.

I have met a few people in my community that struggled with English after coming to the US. I think the older age group is more vulnerable to facing the English language barrier. LJL's products excite me because they solve real-world problems that directly impact those who require English-language skills.

The language workshops offered by LJL were amazing! LJL volunteers introduced kids to different languages from around the world. The kids had a great time participating in fun and engaging activities. I'm looking forward to working with you in the upcoming language workshops.

I worked as a UI Design intern at Linguistics Justice League (LJL). I developed UI design mock-up screens and designed wireframes. I collaborated with other enthusiastic volunteers. Additionally, I had the chance to enhance my website and app design skills, strengthening my proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.I was able to get a new job opportunity with the experience I gained at LJL. This experience gave me gain professional experience. I highly recommend others to join LJL to gain professional experience and make a meaningful impact.

I think the main reason that excites me about the work at LJL is that the problem they are tackling is a very important problem in my opinion because I believe that learning English is an essential asset that any person from any part of the world can benefit significantly from; and the way LJL is developing interactive and intuitive tools to bridge the gap from other languages to the English language is a prime example of how the worldwide community is being helped in a meaningful way.

It was a great experience working with enthusiastic volunteers at LJL. During my time there, I gained valuable experience in building language technology for people who speak low-resource languages, utilizing React and Python. This experience not only helped me enhance my existing skills but also provided an opportunity to learn new ones.
