The amount of effort, love, and care that Open Heart Kitchen's staff and volunteers puts into each meal, interaction, event is truly something that cannot be measured. The ripple affects of their work reaches lives far and wide, and I'm so proud that we have a program who recognizes and champions the food poverty issues in the tri-valley area that can often be overlooked. Excellent organization with a great mission and even better staff and volunteers!
I’ve had the privilege of volunteering with Open Heart Kitchen since December 2016. This is a trustworthy organization that deserves support. It is gratifying to help seniors at the Pleasanton Senior Center during lunchtime, as this is often their only human contact for the day. My experiences there have been both fulfilling and enlightening, allowing me to connect with diverse individuals and contribute to a cause that truly makes a difference in people’s lives. Join us in making a difference!
OHK is the best! Their extraordinary vision for community assistance, combined with the awesome staff, the friendly volunteers and the wonderful clients, make this an amazing organization to work with. Volunteering with OHK is always the highlight of my week!
OHK is a great, easy way to help out in our community. They have several volunteer options in the tri-valley based on your interests and availability. Do yourself and others a favor and get involved; it adds to the richness and character of our community.
I am an a 80 year old retiree. I wanted to to do something to give back to the community (and the seniors) that I have lived in for 55 years. So I volunteered for the Senior Meal Program at the Pleasanton Senior Center. My experience has exceeded my expectations. The team of volunteers I work with are the best of the best. Their work ethic is without compromise. I'm "old-school" and our collective understanding of what our objective is (serving a nutritional meal to our fellow seniors) is focused, without ego, harmonious, and abides by all the guidelines and regulations of Open Heart Kitchen and the food service industry,. I leave the end of every shifts I work with a valued sense of gratification in doing some small part to serve humanity (other human's needs). I believe I help others to know that for the short time we are together, we foster the hope that the world can effectively be a better place. And it is, for the time we are together during the Pleasanton Meal Service program.
Open Heart Kitchen is an amazing organization offering nutritional meals to the local vulnerable residents of the tr-valley. I am so proud to be associated and working with the group. The jobs I am involved in make me feel more proud and happy than any corporate job I have had in the past. Lets keep up the good work and continue the excellent work that is done
It has been a true honor to volunteer at Open Heart Refuge since the new facility opened in January 2024. After nearly nine months, the reason I continue to return is the heartfelt dedication of the shelter coordinators to the community. The executive director frequently visits in the evenings to ensure the coordinators have the resources and support they need to care for everyone. Their genuine compassion inspires not only me but all the volunteers, making us proud to contribute to such an impactful service. It’s a rewarding experience to be part of a team that truly cares.
I have been volunteering at the Pleasanton Senior Center since before the pandemic. It has been a very fulfilling experience, both volunteering and getting to know the seniors, making friends.
Our seniors get a nutritious meal, and have the opportunity to socialize at tables of seven people.
I recommend working with OHK. It's all around a fun, great day.
Open Heart is an incredible organization that helps so many in the Tri-Valley and beyond. They are innovative in the way they work and always go above and beyond to support clients with the individual in mind. The staff is incredibly smart, passionate and dedicated to the work. It is a pleasure to serve on the Board of Open Heart Kitchen.

Have been volunteering for Open Heart Kitchen for nearly 3 years and never have I known a nonprofit which operates everyday with a singleminded goal of feeding anyone requesting to be fed, or housed (based on beds available) for those who ask for shelter. With several meal sites, grocery distribution locations, and an overnight refuge location, Open Heart Kitchen provides the right solutions for those less fortunate in the communities it serves.

Open Heart Kitchen is so instrumental in the area it serves that if they pulled out and shut its doors a significant part of local population would go hungry. With its meal sites and grocery distribution locations spread out in the area they serve they play an instrumental role for those dealing with nutritional challenges. Open Heart Kitchen is likely the most instrumental nonprofit in the East Bay for the role it plays keeping a significant part of the population from going hungry.
I have been a volunteer and donor for close to 14 years. It has been one of the best experiences of my life. Volunteering is very rewarding and I have met some really great people as well as developing rewarding friendships.
I have volunteered with Open Heart Kitchen (OHK) for 4 years now. My experience is that they serve as many groups as they can in the most caring way they can. We have a Senior sit-down lunch where seniors connect with each other. Following that is a hot lunch pick up for anyone needing food. We also have an outreach program that goes to those in need and we are in the process of opening a food bank. All these are examples of finding the need and filling it.
My volunteer experience has been great. A flexible schedule you choose. Friendly people who are there mostly because they want to be. They have a good attitude and we all work together well.
In 2008 I was down on my luck and unemployed. Open Heart Kitchen fed me many times, and now I'm able to give back by volunteering! I absolutely love this wonderful organization for everything they do for my community, and I'm so happy to see OHK grow!
I have volunteered with Open Heart Kitchen for over 5 years. Prior to the pandemic I volunteered in the kitchen assisting the chefs in preparing nutritious meals for the seniors. For the past 3 years I have been part of the team providing fresh produce and groceries at pop-up locations. Working with the staff and the other volunteers has always been a great experience. The staff is always for grateful for the volunteer's time. Open Heart Kitchen truly is a Great Nonprofit!

Everyone is so welcoming and grateful for our time. We're lucky to have this wonderful organization in our community
OHK gives not only meals to elders but the places to socialize and have a healthy life.
All the people from this organization and the volunteers really care about the impact of their work to the society. It is also fun for me to meet interesting people. I really enjoy volunteering with OHK.
The level of commitment and passion from the staff is mirrored by the broad and diverse volunteers who serve. I’ve witnessed food preparation, distribution, and serving to those in need. Each step of the process is designed with the highest standards of quality to insure healthy delivery of their goods. Even at the level of volunteers training and monitoring, staff leadership treats everyone with compassion and respect, encouraging and modeling the best practices. I am fortunate to be able to serve my community under the direction of this quality organization.
I really appreciate how OHK checks in on new volunteers to make sure the experience is what they were expecting. They are always grateful for the help and make me feel supported.

Thanks to Gary and a few more names I regretfully am unable to recall as of this writing, who delivered hot food to me ON A DAILY BASIS without complaint while I was housed at the Tri-valley Inn. They are remarkable in their dedication to feeding people.
Review from Guidestar
Wow, look at all those paid for 5-star reviews.
Don't be fooled. Open Heart Kitchen serves housed seniors before the homeless, and have served people in luxury cars before the homeless during COVID. The food is inedible a lot of the time. When it is edible, you better be close to a restroom a couple of hours after eating it. They've served salads as meals, knowing full well the people they claim to be helping have gone hungry since the last visit.
They don't take any criticisms well. The message is clear that they're doing it half-heartedly because they have to. Not because they want to.
We started volunteering this summer with Open Heart Kitchen. Most shifts we work are in the production kitchen, which prepares the food for all the sites where it is distributed. We are constantly amazed at the work put into feeding so many people every single day. We have also served meals at some of the distribution sites (senior centers), and it is beyond heartwarming to know our efforts are making a difference in feeding people.
Open Heart Kitchen is a well respected nonprofit that has dedicated staff and volunteers and has continued to evolve how to expand its services in the Tri-Valley. Services include the hot meal program, the senior meal program, and the street outreach program. A key tenet is that we serve anyone who is need of a meal with dignity and respect. It has been a privilege to serve on the board of directors for the past eight years.

I’ve volunteered in different roles with OHK from food prep pre-pandemic, to grocery distribution during the pandemic, and now meal distribution at a senior center. The OHK staff is so friendly and appreciative of their volunteers, and the recipients of the groceries / meals are very appreciative too.
You can tell the chefs care about the meals they make because they look, smell (and taste) delicious.
OHK is also a great place to make new friends. I volunteered with someone during the pandemic grocery distribution and we still keep in touch and get together today.
Great camaraderie and teamwork at my three Open Heart Kitchen volunteer opportunities. We serve the community very well because we work so well together, which leads to a very efficient operation. I love my volunteering that I do because I get to really make a difference in my community. Open Heart Kitchen allows me to do that -- and have fun at the same time!
I've volunteered for Open Heart Kitchen for 5 years. The staff and volunteers are amazingly dedicated and upbeat. Open Heart Kitchen consistently helps community members meet their most basic needs with healthy hot meals and social connection. They stayed open during the pandemic and even expanded their offerings. Love it!
I have had the pleasure of experiencing Open Heart Kitchen's growth over the past several years as an organization. OHK has always been anchored in the incredibly important mission of feeding those in need in the Tri-Valley, and has continued to evolve the offering of the organization to further this mission to clients from all walks of life. OHK is extremely well run, with passionate, dedicated leadership from a talented management team, and equally passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers throughout the organization.
been a volunteer with OHK for almost two years now, they do an amazing job for the tri-valley community. I love volunteering at OHK and all the employees are very friendly and help equally.
I started volunteering at Open Heart Kitchen about 4 years ago and I look forward to coming each week. I can't say enough positive things about this organization. They deeply care about their clients and they put so much time, energy, and heart into each meal they serve. I LOVE this organization!
This is a great deal for seniors. I’ve been a volunteer for a wheel at the Pleasanton Senior Center and everyone there works hard and is loving.
I’ve visited every sight of OHK as a volunteer and each one had such great supportive staff and the most wonderful people who we serve to! Wherever you go, it’s very apparent how much the staff cares about what they do. The love truly goes around full circle here and getting to share in this great community has been such an honor :) thank you guys!
I started volunteering w/OHK about 8 years ago with my teenage daughter, and I have continued serving at various locations. I'm pretty familiar w/this nonprofit, and they do an excellent job of providing food for those in need, serving children/seniors/homeless. The office staff is wonderful to work with and the kitchen staff is supportive, gracious and so very appreciative. OHK is my #1 nonprofit to support! Love them!
Volunteering for OHK has been so amazing. Every single person is very kind and gives lots of guidance. They will help you out with whatever role you are assigned and give instruction on jobs that may be new to you. This organization is such a great outlet for those who are in need of meals. This organization and its volunteers are purely helping others from the goodness of their heart.
I love this charity. I volunteer there with my children as often as possible. The people that run this program are truly amazing!
Times are even tougher now with Covid-19. I am so thankful that I have a safe place to pick up meals for my family.

Open Heart has blessed me in so many ways. I have volunteered with them over the years and I continually encounter the most caring, kind and professional organizers. Every time I go, it fills my heart that I can help them serve the community. Now, in the middle of a global pandemic, I find myself on the needing side instead of the serving side. I am grateful for such a wonderful organization.
I volunteered for Open Heart. I was very impressed by the dedicated volunteers, their hard work, and the home-cooked, healthy food they provide for those in need. They also set out dessert and whole loaves of bread for taking home. (I believe guests could also take home leftovers.) It's a good charity that serves good food.
My company volunteered here again and this time we bagged lunches for students. We put together over 2000 lunches in 2 hours. I love helping feed children in the community.
