Mission: Old Salem, Inc. (now doing business as Old Salem Museums & Gardens) was established in 1950 as a private, nonprofit living history museum to authentically re-create, preserve and interpret Salem, North Carolina, a Moravian congregation town founded in 1766. Old Salem Museums & Gardens provides a uniquely authentic view of real life and material culture during the earliest days of our nation, as experienced by settlers of the American South from 1766 to 1866. The experience includes: • Historic preservation through scores of original buildings and structures • Reconstituted landscapes and gardens of 18th and 19th century Salem • The unique history of Moravian immigrants and their planned settlement • Educational programs, interpretation, events and conferences • The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA), the most comprehensive collection of Southern material culture and research in America. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark and accredited by the American Association of Museums, Old Salem welcomes nearly 100,000 ticketed and 200,000 non-ticketed visitors annually.
Programs: Museum program: a museum of early southern decorative arts. Also, copies of publications were produced, including guidebooks and journals.
historical preservation program: includes restoration and maintenance of 30 historic properties and over 15,000 antiquities acquired for collection and exhibit to the public.
educational program: guided interpretive tours and special events are held for educational purposes as well as museum classes and summer apprenticeship programs. Hosted over 178,000 visitors, including 32,800 school children.
