Mission: Children’s Home, a 501(c)3 U.S. non-profit was established in 2018 to support the children at Numan Orphanage, in Assela, Ethiopia. Following the January 9, 2018 Ethiopian Parliament legislation which banned all intercountry adoptions by foreigners, children residing at many orphanages in Ethiopia were affected. While local adoptions are encouraged, sadly there are not enough adoptive families for the country’s estimated 4.6 million orphans. Many U.S. adoptive families have roots to Numan via their child(ren) adopted from Ethiopia. We are actively reaching out to this community to ask for help in creating a sustainable environment for the vulnerable children Numan continues to care for following the closure of intercountry adoption. Our immediate goal is to increase the number of sponsors to secure the financial stability of the orphanage. We are blessed to work with a dedicated staff including Endale Wami who has committed his life to care for these children, and for Mesa the lead nanny who has never left the children’s side — even after not being paid for years. Our long-term goals include creating a self-sustaining orphanage that can also give back to its community through outreach programs such as daycare and employment opportunities. We are also working towards orphan prevention via family preservation to the community in Assela, Ethiopia.
Results: During covid we provided food to the most vulnerable in our community. 2023 we raised funds to purchase land in the countryside to build a larger home for the children and build a school for the surrounding communitiy. We support the 15 children living currently at Numan Children’s home and have acquired school sponsorships for each child to receive a good quality education. We recently partnered with a single father struggling to care for his children as he had to work all day. With help from a generous donor we were able to build them bunk beds to sleep on, provide much needed food, send the children to school and have someone check in with them through out the week. In doing this we prevented the social health and services in Assela from removing the children from his care. Lastly we acquired a water line to the property we own that provides the whole community a cleaner water source. We are currently starting construction.
