Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: To relieve the suffering of animals in Afghanistan and Ukraine; including working equines, stray and abandoned dogs and cats and all other animals in need of care and attention. We provide and maintain rescue, rehabilitation and education facilities for the care and treatment of such animals with no voice but ours. Nowzad Dogs is 501c3 registered. The aim of the charity is to improve the welfare of the animals of Afghanistan and Ukraine; which includes humanely reducing the stray dog population which in turn will reduce the incidents of canine rabies. We provide animal welfare education for the Afghan people (particularly school children and veterinary students) and develop training programs to improve the lives of working animals.

In 2010 I picked up a book called 'One Dog At A Time' from that moment on I've never looked back and have supported and followed Nowzad from that moment on. I first met Pen in 2014 at Crufts when dog 'Wylie' who was rescued from Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2011 was up for an award and subsequently crowned supreme champion in the Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year, beating over a thousand entries. Following on with 3 further wonderful books which are must reads. My support has evolved even greater since the awful events in Afghanistan, August '21 and the untimely evacuation and more recently the war in Ukraine to getting more hands on with volunteering at events and collecting donations for fundraisers. Nowzad is a huge part of my life and is the most transparent, wonderful Charity who I consider part of my extended family.

In August 2021 I became engrossed in the story of a man called Pen Farthing who ran an animal rescue centre called Nowzad and was dedicated to airlifting his staff, dogs and cats from Kabul to the UK due to the fall of Afghanistan to Taliban control.
As the story unfolded through the media the efforts of Pen and his team became more and more remarkable.

At this time an abandoned Siberian Husky had entered my life and I was dedicating my time to bringing him back to full health.

From August 2021 I continued to follow the journey of Nowzad and became very interested in their work.
In 2022 my husky died and I was open for another rescue dog. I was duly vetted by Nowzad and Lammy who had been evacuated from Kabul came to live with me.

Nowzad is run by a dedicated small group of people who do a fantastic job.
To help this cause I have organised a very successful driveway fundraising event, car boot sale and as part of our local Christmas Tree Festival have decorated a tree dedicated to Nowzad.

Visiting their base in Devon highlights the extraordinary organisational skills of this small group and they deserve everyone’s full support in looking after these needy animals in both Afghanistan and now Ukraine.

I have worked with Nowzad as a veterinary technician for over a year now in war torn Ukraine. Their support and guidance have been of tremendous value. They have made it possible for me to vaccinate over 1500 animals against rabies and a variety of other diseases, saving them from enormous suffering. Without them, I could have never accomplished this. In addition they have organized sterilization programs and build beautiful enclosures at otherwise impoverished shelters. Nowzad is a true hero to Ukraine!

We highly recommend the non-profit Nowzad, a charity which works in Afghanistan and Ukraine. In August 2021 we followed Nowzad CEO Pen Farthing's brave efforts to get his Afghan veterinary clinic staff and shelter animals out of danger - read the true story in Pen's book "Operation Ark", spoiler: mission accomplished!
We subsequently met Pen, Ann & David Hill and the Nowzad Team of volunteers at an Open Day in Devon, England.
We love to follow updates on Instagram and Facebook showing the ongoing ground breaking work in animal welfare projects Nowzad achieves in the two difficult and dangerous countries, reassured how our monthly donation contributions are spent.
Donkeys "Shadow" & "Jack" (pictured) were rescued by Nowzad in appalling condition. They are now very lucky boys, being permanent residents at Nowzad's Donkey Sanctuary in Kabul. We have just treated them to warm winter rugs.
Please support Nowzad's vital work. Thank you!

Having just returned from an unforgettable trip to Kabul, Afghanistan, I want to share my incredible experience working with the dedicated veterinarians at Nowzad Animal Hospital.

Nowzad, a fantastic UK-based charity (registered charity 1119185), has been a lifeline for animals in Afghanistan since 2007. They offer essential services like free pet vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and care for injured animals. They even have a dedicated cattery for adoptable cats and a program focused on treating working donkeys, horses, and mules, complete with owner education on proper animal care. But Nowzad's impact goes far beyond veterinary care. They've facilitated the rescue of companion animals for soldiers and operate a sanctuary for retired working animals. Additionally, they're committed to empowering the local community by employing and training Afghans, including the country's very first female veterinarians.

The experience was incredibly successful and deeply rewarding. Nowzad's dedication to animal welfare, even in a difficult environment, is truly inspiring.

But Nowzad's reach extends beyond Afghanistan. Their commitment to animal welfare extends to Ukraine as well. In the wake of the war, Nowzad has been a critical supporter of two animal shelters in the central and far eastern regions, both of which were damaged by missile and rocket attacks. In October 2023, the Nowzad team led by Pen Farthing travelled to these sites, bringing with them building supplies, veterinary aid, and a lot of determination. Nowzad rebuilt dog kennels and runs, created facilities for rescued cats, and implemented vital programs like vaccination and de-worming regimes. Nowzad also provided local veterinary training on TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return).

Nowzad's support for Ukraine goes even further. They've partnered with AWAMO to train the veterinary faculty at Lviv University on basic animal first aid and the use of a new animal electronic ID system. Additionally, they've supported a mass TNVR campaign by providing microchips and grants for surgical equipment and medical supplies.

Nowzad is committed to Ukraine during this war and after. They recognize the ongoing need to rebuild the capacity for animal welfare support within the country.

If you're looking for a charity that makes a real difference, look no further than Nowzad. Their unwavering commitment to the animals in Afghanistan and Ukraine, as well as their dedication to empowering local communities, is truly remarkable.

If I must describe Nowzad in three words I would say: amazing, personal and life-changing!

And this is why:

I first heard about Nowzad in 2009. It was when we were looking for the possibilities to get our puppy, Bazgir out of Afghanistan. She was found on the streets of a village called Bazgir and had been rescued from some kids who were using her as a ball to kick around. We found her a way out with Pen and Nowzad, and will be forever happy and grateful for that opportunity.
Since then I’ve been following Nowzad. It was not only because they reunited dogs with their owners, but also because of the great work they do for the animals and people of Afghanistan.

Together with Bazgir, Juliet - another Nowzad dog - came to live with us. In 2014 Mate, also a Nowzad dog, joined the group.

In July 2021 we had to say our sad goodbyes to Bazgir. Pen wrote a personal email. That email meant the world to me. I knew he was in the US and really busy because of the coming CDC ban. In that same email he said that when the time was right the possibility to give another Nowzad dog a forever home would be there. Little did we know about what was going to happen a few weeks later… what Pen and his Nowzad team did in those terrifying weeks - termed Operation Ark - was amazing!

In December I sent in an application to adopt an Operation Ark Nowzad dog (or 2 or 3!). This ended up in 3 more: Soulha, Opal and Pak. This is why I say Nowzad is life changing! Not only for the dogs, but also for us humans.

I’m looking forward to my 15 years celebration of knowing and following Nowzad. And I hope they can continue their work for many more years! And yes … it is a family! Keep up the amazing work!

Ever since Pen rescued our Afghan Princess called Fubar, from Afghanistan, (as one of the first dogs,) I have been in touch with him and could play a part in helping to bring a couple of more dogs to the Netherlands, where they are still happily spending their last years in loved safety. I then met a young Ukrainian woman who was in tears everytime she thought of all those poor bewildered and not understanding animals which had to be left by their fleeing owners, themselves as sad as the dogs. Emails and phonecalls to our own friends and relatives here, followed by some mails to Pen, David, Wendy and others at Nowzad's, , and, my Ukrainian friends shed more tears, this time from gratitude following the reports and picures she received from shelters in Dnipro and elsewhere in the country. Nowzad makes an enormous difference to both humans and animals!!!!!!! Dorothy, the Netherlands

I first encountered Nowzad Dogs in 2016 upon adopting a cat from them. The cat had been rescued from the streets of Kabul being only several days old. He was nursed to health at the charity and came to me at about 8 months old. That adoption made me a member of the Nowzad Family of caretakers, fundraisers, and adopters. A truly spectacular group of people. I followed their activities and made donations to help fund their critical work. Prior to the Taliban takeover in 2021, I asked to adopt a dog from those in Nowzad Shelter. The dog had also been rescued as a puppy from the streets of Kabul. Like many I followed the Operation Ark evacuation of personnel and pets and was so impressed by the "must do/can do" attitude and transparency of the organization. I have continued to support Nowzad and currently fundraise by conducting auctions in the US. Monies raised support their critical work in Afghanistan and Ukraine. Truly a shining example of how a not-for-profit organization should be operated in the best interests of pets and people.

I first discovered Pen Farthing and Nowzad in August 2021, whilst watching the UK news about the devastating fall of Kabul to the Taliban. I cannot put into words the immense gratification and admiration I have for Pen Farthing and ALL of his incredible team, volunteers and Veterinarians.
I find it utterly selfless, heroic and courageous to risk one's life and place the lives of animals first. There are few people in this world that 'actually' do this for animals but Pen Farthing and the entire Nowzad team definitely live by these ethics. Not only did Pen and the Nowzad team evacuate 285 dogs and cats out of Afghanistan and safely into the UK, amidst incredibly dangerous times, but they went one step further and extended their compassionate hearts into Ukraine. They continue to work tirelessly, around the clock to deliver vital veterinary supplies, (including surgical equipment) literal tonnes of food, vaccinations, microchips and other essentials into the areas of Ukraine that are hardest hit by this horrific conflict. These will accommodate the animals who are sick and without vital medication and vaccination, those with epilepsy, diabetes, and other conditions that are dependent on life sustaining medicines. To date, 2023, Nowzad, has built housing for dogs @ Kramatorsk Shelter in Ukraine, who will now be warm for winter. Further, Nowzad, despite many obstacles, continues to operate a Veterinary Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, caring for overworked and injured donkeys, horses, street dogs, cats, a cow named David and Jaja the goat. Their work in Afghanistan also includes a crucial rabies awareness, vaccination and prevention program. I am a proud and fur-ever supporter of Pen Farthing and the entire Nowzad team and will endeavour to do my part in supporting their outstanding efforts to help save and improve the lives of animals in Afghanistan and Ukraine.

This is a unique and amazing organization. I was so impressed with their work in Afghanistan and in particular the difference they were making in the lives of girls there. I've had the pleasure of meeting Penn and several of the Nowzad dogs over the years and I can say without hesitation that they do terrific work.

Thomas Afghan Cat came home with me from Afghanistan in 2016. Dasher Afghan Dog would follow in 2020; one of the last few dogs Nowzad was able to rehome in the USA. I have said many times before that these two souls were at least something I could truly protect from that place. I’ve come to believe in fact they are the true protectors. We continue to heal together. Thank you Nowzad for these precious gifts.

I learned about Nowzad ten years ago when I was introduced to Pen during an animal charity event in Texas. I had been involved in street dog rescue for many years and was fascinated by Nowzad's efforts in Afghanistan. I was invited to visit Kabul to see Nowzad's work, in person. In 2015, I had the privilege to fly to Kabul and spend almost two weeks with the Nowzad team.

I saw first hand the knowledge, dedication and genuine compassion the entire team had for the animals and people of Kabul. To do 'street dog rescue' in Texas is hard enough as it is. Add the element of being in a war zone and the challenge increases exponentially. It is hard work. It is challenging. It is emotional. It is dangerous. It is rewarding.

Nowzad also supported the working women of Afghanistan and also employed the only female veterinary team in the country.

By providing their services, helping to humanely reduce the loose animal population (spay/neuter), rabies and other vaccinations, medical care for sick or injured animals, and education and training for local and village residents, it has all come together to help change how animals are seen and treated.

I have seen, firsthand, the dedication and compassion of the entire Nowzad team. It truly is an amazing organization.

Absolutely adore this charity ! The people and all that they strive for !! The team are always so grateful for any help you give them . Nowzad are always trying to find ways to help and assist those most in need from war torn ukraine and Afghanistan ! It’s vitally important in Afghanistan that the younger generations are educated on the importance of animal care and right now the team are helping locals achieve this and hopefully break the chain of animal neglect . I like to dedicate my time in raising funds by making home made biscuits and tombolas at my local hospital and can’t wait until the Xmas one !! Such great satisfaction knowing the funds go to such a well deserved cause !!! Nowzad and Pen are absolute heroes !!!

We were not complete until we worked with Nowzad and added Jewels to our family in the Summer of 2021. A rescue from Afghanistan Jewels is a beautiful mixed breed of Golden Retriever, Shepherd and Saluki. As the story goes - She was born on the war-torn streets of Kabul, survived day-to-day within a pack - roaming and sleeping on the streets, scavenging for food wherever she could.

At some point Jewels she was taken to a local military base in Kabul where she spent the past few years.

In 2020 when US & UK forces began their withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Taliban took control - Jewels along with hundreds of other dogs and cats where left behind at the bases to fend for themselves. That’s when this outstanding organization - Nowzad - stepped in and rescued many of these animals - relocating them to shelters around the world. Jewels was fortunate enough to be transported over 24 hours to the States where she landed here in Cleveland and placed with a local foster home. That’s where we found her posted online and adopter her. Our hearts melted the moment we met. And Nowzad made this all possible for us.

Jewels has been a challenge but well worth the effort in the love and joy she brings us everyday. Coming from Afghanistan she experienced significant PTSD and day-to-day anxiety. Yet with persistence and plenty of hugs and tummy rubs Jewels has evolved into one of the the most loving creatures. She’s part of the family and we owe it all to Nowzad and the tireless, self-less work they do. Nowzad is one of those organizations that you can’t help but love their mission - to deliver animal welfare in Afghanistan and now Ukraine - to provide care and rescue to as many animals. I wish Nowzad continued support in their efforts around the world.

I volunteered at the Nowzad dog shelter in Kabul way back in 2008 when I was working in Afghanistan - walking the dogs, helping with surgeries and treatment of the dogs and cats, and anything else that was needed. The work Nowzad was doing there, the only non-profit of its kind doing anything to help the animals of the wartorn country, was unbelievable - introducing the idea of animal welfare and proper treatment and care of animals. I also saw all the efforts go into training the new generation of vets, and the outreach work on the streets of Kabul, teaching the locals about the threat of rabies and how to combat it in the street dog population through humane means. In just my 3 years volunteering there, I saw a real change in attitudes towards animals, with locals seeking out the shelter and clinic if they came across injured or sick animals. The work Nowzad does, in the hardest of conditions and circumstances, is so impressive and so needed.

Favorite charity. Totally grassroots. No big publicity stunts, no political agenda. Just good people who quietly save the world one puppy and one kitty at a time.

Additionally, they support working women in Afghanistan. The country's only female veterinarians and training program.
