Causes: Arts & Culture, Cultural & Ethnic Awareness

Mission: The mission of the norwegian-american historical association (naha) is to locate, collect, preserve and interpret the norwegian-american experience with accuracy, integrity, and liveliness. To achieve this goal, we maintain an active acquisitions program focusing on materials related to norwegian-american immigration and immigrants. In addition to maintaining the largest archive of norwegian-american immigration materials, we have an active publications program to encourage scholarship in this area.

Programs: Membership:our primary membership activities include the production of events and newsletters to inform and educate naha members and public about our collections and topics related to norwegian-american immigration history. In 2014 naha hosted a norwegian heritage day event at st. Olaf college with more than 160 attendees. Special guests were norwegian photographer per breiehagen and author lori evert. In september, naha hosted a tour called "bridging continents, bridging the river, highlighting the norwegian-born architects and engineers who shaped the mississippi river gorge at the turn of the 20th century. Naha published four newsletters featuring highlights from the archives, and new collections and submitted material related to norwegian immigration to the us and canada.

archives:naha continues to actively collect and preserve materials related to the norwegian-american experience, assists members, scholars, historians and others in accessing our archival holdings, continues expanding our digital depositories of photographs and obituary holdings. In 2014, 38 collections were added to our archives. The association continued to prepare for the digital launch of its rowberg collection (which occurred in spring of 2015), including clippings of 50,000 articles, mainly obituaries, scanned and cataloged for our online search engine. Dozens of scholars, historians and family genealogists use the naha archives in person each year, and more than 150 had research or material requests fulfilled by phone or email. The organization continued its fundraising campaign to install climate control equipment within the naha archives. Projected installation is scheduled to begin the summer of 2017.

publication:in the fall of 2014, naha published volume 2 of "from norway to america" and distributed it to its members. The 565-page, hardcover edition contains translations of norwegian-american immigrant letters that were sent back to relatives and friends in norway during the years 1871-1892. Release of vol. 3, the final in this significant series, is planned for the fall of 2016.
