Northwoods humane society is always so wonderful to work with. Honey, aka Alani, and her BFF spend a lot of time entertaining us. Thank you so much for our newest family member!!
My husband and I adopted two of our three pups from the NHS. Our first dog was back in December of 2019 and we got our third back in February of 2023. Both times the adoption process went smooth and we knew if we were pre approved quickly. The staff is very friendly and allowed us time to bond with both before we took them home. Gus, (previously Larry) and Luna (previously Sienna) were both sent with their shots up to date, vet files, food, leashes, and collars. This was nice since Gus was our first dog together and we didn't have the stuff until after a trip to Walmart. They were both sent with pamphlets that had information about the transition period that were very useful. We love NHS and will continue to go here for future adoptions. :)
I LOVE the Northwood Humane Society. We have gotten our last 2 cats from them. They do such a good job of socializing their animals and because of this, they know if the animals are good around kids, other animals. They are a no kill shelter and take in dogs from across the country. In order to do that the staff has to travel to go get the dogs. The staff is amazing as well as their volunteers. Volunteers to walk the dogs, be in the cat room, man the front desk. It truly is an amazing place started by one woman that built a sanctuary for animals until their forever person comes.
I volunteered at NHS for about a year. This group gives every animal who comes through their doors their full attention. The love and care are inspirational.
They also provide pet food to pet owners who need assistance. No question.
I fully support the work they are doing. They are a no-kill shelter and work hard to find every animal a good and caring home.
We have adopted several dogs from the Northwoods Humane Society. Starting in the 1990s through the present and we have been very impressed with the care and familiarity with each individual dog they have for adoption. They never give up on an animal. We strongly recommend NHS and visit (pre-covid) the site and staff often. Alicia Austin is a tremendous advocate for NHS. If you need a furry friend, contact NHS and they will do their best to get you your forever friend. Always honest and open about their animals.
I have adopted several animals from NHS and have been impressed every time with their concern and compassion. I remember a dog came into the shelter covered in that virulent kind of mange; staff took on the challenge: despite the time and effort required, the dog recovered and was adopted. Then there was the dog whose neck had been ravaged by some predator; many (most?) would have euthanized, but NHS spent $$ for appropriate vet care. As a volunteer there, I see remarkable things. One dog was terrified of people, especially, it seemed, tall people. The staff member lay in her stomach on the cold, concrete floor, talking gently to the pup (who eventually found his forever home). That a very small community supports a shelter capable of handling these kinds of things is just short of miraculous. Raising the annual budget of approximately $365,000 in a community of about 3,000 people requires dedicated staff and volunteers. It is a genuine wonder, but it happens every year.
I’ve been involved with Northwoods in a variety of ways because my best friend is the manager. They not only place a large amount of animals of their own, but will take on shipments from other parts of the country that need help. They also are ready to help other shelters in need, such as when the shelter in the neighboring county burned. The manager has connections all over the country, and if any difficult animal rescues need to be done, she is the person to contact to get things done! Northwoods is awesome!
I've got a couple dogs from Northwoods Humane Society. Both were great animals. The staff is great. I've been to several other humane societies, none as good though. Make it a point to help, however you can. I like to walk dogs and think it probably does me more good then them. Check out there shop on 2nd. st. in Hayward.
Thanks for making our area a better community

Very nice facility. My family had adopted some cats/kittens from here in the past, and we adopted a cat and dog from the humane society after I had graduated. Lovely staff, Lovely animals. Keep up the good work! This is a picture of our animals, Charles and Bronson.
I've adopted 2 dogs from this shelter & always am amazed at that care & concern they have for the welfare of the animals!! Go above & beyond trying to find the perfect home for these fur babies! So much so, I watch from out of state to see what they have going on! It's worth the trip to work with these folks!!
This is a no kill shelter. They take abused animals, dog mill animals, horded animals. Korean dog meat animals, lost and abandoned animals. All get neutered or spayed. All get what ever medical attention they need. Training, socialization, love. These pitiful animals get it all to become your perfect and best friend. Please support the NorthwoodsHumane Society in Hayward Wi. My little Mr Diggs.
I wasn't able to adopt a pet from Northwoods Humane Society but I volunteered there for a few summers walking dogs. The facility is so well-kept, the staff are all incredibly kind, and the animals are truly in an ideal temporary home. The trails that the dogs are walked on are of varying lengths so all dogs can get their best walk in a beautiful setting. They also get play/run time in the fenced enclosure out back. Amazing place for some lucky animals!
An outstanding shelter! All of the animals are taken care of by trained, caring staff and volunteers. NHS has a beautiful, clean facility and offers a wonderful dog park to the community free of charge. They cooperate with many other community organizations and have extended their outreach to other towns and states. NHS recently extended its services to South Korea to assist dogs that were in need of health care and homes. Overall, the Northwoods Humane Society is a very special place for animals and its many visitors.
I adopted a female Chihuahua about 11 years ago and a male Chihuahua 4 years ago from this shelter and was very satisfied with the adoption. The shelter is beyond clean and run very well and the staff's dedication to animals is mind-boggling. I have been very happy with my little angel dogs and would most certainly adopt another animal from this shelter in a heartbeat. The shelter manager has had years of dedication to this shelter right from the beginning and you'll not find another person more dedicated to finding homes for these dogs and cats than her. She has a genuine love for pets and works hard for this organization. I only wish we had a shelter as well run as this one is in LaSalle County Illinois. A++++
