april 18, 2016 marked our fourth year of the big education event. The program consisted of awarding individuals, from students to service staff to teachers, for their dedication in the field of education. The program highlighted several local educators and had an ongoing musical component. May 23, 2016 kixe produced a fourth year of salute to veterans. This patriotic music program highlights a variety of acts which perform america themed music. Our ongoing pre-school activity, "storytime" has been a real station success story. On the third thursday of every month in our volunteer center, preschoolers and their parents are invited to listen to a children's book read by a community member. The morning is rounded out with an activity and a healthy snack. A partnership with first five shasta enables the station to provide a book to each participating family. May 2016 - many books where delivered to local schools in shasta and trinity counties. The books, funded by the redding rancheria community fund, went to the schools with a significant financial need. January 10 at 2 pm kixe held a mercy street screener on at the women's club in chico. Partners for the screening included the csu, chico history department. Dr. Robert tinkler, csuc history professor, opened the program with a background about what was happening at the time of mercy street. This was an open to the public screener and connected with our chico viewers. October 2016 - in our premiere episode of north state issues live our host lorraine dechter spoke with five guests about the complex issues surrounding substance abuse in northern california. Guests included: jennifer carvalho, executive director skyway house; phillip hernandez, tehama county drug court; marc dadigan, community education specialist, shasta county health and human services; mike skondin and crystal johnson, brave faces.
