Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Northeast Animal Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in Northeast Philadelphia. We are dedicated to saving homeless, unwanted and abandoned cats. We depend solely on donations, which are tax deductible. NAR focuses on having feral (wild) cats spayed and/or neutered to decrease overpopulation. In the process of helping feral cats, we come across many who are friendly. These cats receive medical attention with the help of local veterinarians, and when ready, are put up for adoption. All our cats are cared for in foster homes. As a general policy, we do not take owner-surrendered cats. Our goal is to place all cats in stable, loving homes where they will be cared for and never be abandoned, abused or neglected.

Results: • Our budget for 2010 was $42,000. • We spent $25,000 on medical expenses alone. Of this $8,000 was for spay/neuter surgeries along. • We use a low-cost clinic for our spay/neuter operations — cost of surgery and vaccinations. for a feral cat is now $30.00. Tests for FIV/FeLV cost us $15.00 each. • 99% of the animals we help are not spayed or neutered before reaching us. All are sterilized before being placed in their new homes or being returned to their monitored colonies. • We are a foster home-based rescue. At any given time, we have approximately 100 cats in foster care. • We placed 163 cats in loving homes in 2010. • As of October, 2011, we had already placed 106 cats in warm and loving homes. • Northeast Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) charity under the I.R.S. Code.

Geographic areas served: Philadelphia and surrounding areas

Programs: Provided medical care and found homes for numerous abandoned amimals.

Hello , we adopted two wonderful cats through NAR. Chase and Echo are and were the sweetest cats. NAR foster parents do a great job getting to know their animals and matching them with potential homes not to mention a great job in general preparing animals for adoption. I give NAR the highest possible recommendation.

Harper (aka Melina) is a wonderful addition to our family. Jayme is really knowledgeable and is on top of caring for the NAR kitties. Harper had proper medical care, vaccines, and was microchipped. Jayme met us at a Pet Value that was convenient, since we had to travel far to meet Harper. She has great information in her adoption packet, and was helpful when we were having issues helping Harper adjust to her new home. We love NAR & will always adopt our fur babies from them!!!

Northeast Animal Rescue has extremely dedicated volunteers that do amazing work. Their fosters are the best! My two boys (Gus and Spencer) came from NAR and were fostered by an amazing 'mom.' They are both sweet, gentle, and loving cats. I know it was because of the way they were treated in foster care. I highly recommend this organization!

I adopted two young cats from this rescue last year. The foster mom could not have been more accommodating! She brought 5 cats to my house and let us spend a couple of hours with them so that we could choose the two we thought would be the best fit. Both of the cats that we adopted are absolutely wonderful. You can tell that they had been well cared for by the foster mom and the rescue overall, and also well socialized. I am so glad I had the opportunity to adopt from this group!

I had a fabulous experience with this rescue. They are very responsive to requests and have a great adoption process. Their fosters are easy to work with and accommodating. I adopted a teenager kitten Stormie, he is a lovely boy who fits in well with our pet family. We love him very much and will be returning to NAR to adopt again in the future.

The people who volunteer in this organization are amazing. They spend so much of their time taking care of the cats and getting them adopted to good families. I got my little one from them almost 7 years ago. She has been my sidekick ever since. They are a wonderful and caring rescue.

I adopted a cat almost two years ago. She is wonderful. All my friends could not love an animal more. She was well cared for before I adopted her. Jamie Rosenthal had a lot to do with it. My vet Dr. Moyer told me she does wonderful work saving cats. Especially cats with poor sight. This rescue gives above and beyond to save animals. Hazel has been the best thing that ever happened to me lately. She is such a joy. I want to adopt another but I would only go to Northeast Animal Rescue if I do because of the care they give to the cats before you adopt them. All you have to do is take them home. Medically and physically they are in excellent condition. This is a top notched organization.

6 months after my cat Maggie passed, I asked the vet tech who was always there for us where to look for hard to place, but healthy, cats. She’s a volunteer with NAR and shared the site with me. When I saw Desmond (now Carlin) I knew we were meant to be and because he was so attached to his sister Carly ( now Radner), she came home too. They were 15 months old and brought in by NAR at 6 months. They were going to be released back to the colony (see pics for tipped left ears) but something changed and NAR cared for them for the next nine months until I came along. It was a tentative time for both cats as they were very timid but lovable and with Jayme’s help they found a forever home. NAR has become my go to when suggesting adoption for cats. xo

I’ve adopted my last 3 cats from NAR and couldn’t be happier with them, start to finish. From filling out the application, meeting the cats to bringing them home. It’s always been a great experience. My 3 NAR babies are simply the best! I couldn’t ask for more loving cats.

I was driving from New York to Philadelphia this past October to visit my boyfriend when I stopped at a rest stop in New Jersey to get gas. While I was Leaving the rest stop, I noticed a grey cat sitting outside of a gazebo. I stopped and got out of my car. I called the cat and he came to right to me. It was raining that day, he was wet and emaciated and clearly had an infection of some kind. I knew I couldn't leave him there so I scooped him up and took him with me to Philadelphia. My boyfriend and I spent all day driving around, first to PAWS which was closed, then to the SPCA which quoted me over $1,000 to help him. I started to cry because as a college student, I don't even have that much money and they were my last hope. We spent the rest of the day in my car with him reaching out to people and trying to find someone to take him. I knew he would be euthanized if I brought him to animal control. The great people at Project Meow put me in contact with Northeast Animal Rescue and we met up with them and they took him in, even knowing the extensive amount of work he needed. They kept me updated on him and now he is available for adoption. I am so grateful to them because most places would not take a case like his, and if they hadn't I have no idea what I would have done. Now this guy gets a much deserved second chance. This is a great rescue. I will be a lifetime supporter now! Thank you!!

"We didn't do it, Mom! It fell down all by itself!" Our life has been a constant stream of joy, love and consternation since we adopted our two kitties, Stevie and Hollywood through NAR in March of 2010. We fell in love with this pair of foster siblings and had to have both! Working with NAR made us appreciate the work they do to make sure each of their animals will be going to a good home. I would recommend this group of hard working volunteers to find just the right pet for you. We've been overjoyed with our "kids" and they will always be members of our family.

6 years ago I adopted the most wonderful cat. Her name is Hazel. If it was not for the caring people at NAR who took care of her for 6 months before I found her and she rescued me. I will always support them for letting me adopt my wonderful Hazel.

We adopted Cabo and CoCo back in 2011. My husband found NAR through online research and knew they'd be the perfect organization to adopt from. Their kitties are so well cared for until they can find their permanent home. Their foster mom has kept in touch every Christmas to send a little gift to them. Everyone associated with NAR is just wonderful!

I got my twins from NAR - two kittens born in the same litter that needed to stay together. They were healthy and happy and so well cared for by their foster mom. They were friendly and helpful when looking for our kittens, to make sure that the experience was good for everyone involved - especially the cats. I recommend NAR to anyone, and will definitely look to them again when looking for new additions to my family.

I first came across NAR 8 years ago after the loss of my first orange cat (age 13) - I was searching local rescue websites and found the kitty of my dreams. My experience was very positive and I continued to follow their website and contribute on an annual basis....when I was looking for another kitty, I again went to their location to see a 4 year old red and white - the fit was not quite right and in the meantime, another red kitten literally jumped into my arms.....I took him home on a week's "trial basis" and the rest is history. SO, I now have two NAR rescued red kitties who are the loves of my life.....I continue to support NAR and will going forward.

My Husband, Danny and I adopted our tuxedo cat, Midnight, now, Midi in October of 2015. We drove 5 1/2 hours one-way to get him. Midi is blind. I found him online, and fell in love with him. NAR was a wonderful organization to work with, and Jamie answered all of my questions before and after, we adopted Midi. It is a wonderful organization! The truly have hearts of gold, and do whatever they can to help the animals. Midi is a 2.5 year old sweetheart, who is full of love and personality! He brings so much joy, laughter and love to our lives. Thank you, NAR for helping us find our furbaby! Bless you and the good work you do!

After we suffered the loss of our previous fur baby passing away we were fortunate enough to find NAR when we were ready to adopt. They were a pleasure to deal with. We adopted not one, but two beautiful orange tabbys that were sisters. We will forever be thankful to NAR for taking care of our babies until they found their forever home with us!

I adopted Apricot and Olivia, two sisters with Cerebellar Hypoplasia. I had lost my kitten with it to FIP and wanted to give a home to another special needs cat. They arranged several visits in different locations with the special needs cats so I could see them interact and in the end I did not want to break up the two sisters who had come so far together. They are both well behaved, litter trained and will respond to their names, which I did not change. I would definitely adopt from them again!

I wanted to adopt a cat with special needs and had found one from NAR online. Upon completing the paperwork I met three separate cats with the same condition (cerebellar hypoplasia), met two volunteers who were both very helpful and friendly. I ended up adopting two handicapped sisters, Apricot and Olivia, whom are both well and still with me. The foster mother was happy to answer questions, and help me with any issues.

Each and every time all of the staff and volunteers were helpful, kind and considerate. They are always ready to answer any questions you may have. I highly recommend them. They love cats.

I started volunteering about 6 years ago. I am a cat lover and welcome a chance to share some time, love and attention with kitties who have not had it as good as my own. We have a vast array of generous volunteers who come to the stores, foster the cats and run many fundraisers. I attempted to foster cats and ended up keeping 3 of them. It is awesome to see so many people commuted to the welfare of all these cats. It is always so exciting when one of our kitties finds their forever home for a lifetime of love.

10 years ago, my daughter & I found a 6 week old kitten in our yard. After making sure he wasn't somebody's lost pet, we decided to keep him. When he was about 2, we decided he needed a playmate. We noticed the Northeast Animal Rescue cats & kittens during our many trips to Petsmart. Their cats all looked well cared for. I loved their "no kill" philosophy and the fact that they even take in cats with special needs. We adopted 2 cats from the rescue without hesitation. My daughter and I were so impressed with NAR's great work that, within the next year....we started volunteering on a regular basis AND added a 4th cat to our family (she was a NAR foster)!! NAR's T-N-R efforts and their emphasis on finding good homes for their fosters is commendable! This rescue really cares!

I found NAR quite by accident. I had a little of kittens born under my shed to a feral mom. As soon as I saw them I started to contact rescues. No one could help, quite by accident I found NAR. They were out the same day. They tried to trap them, no kitties were around that evening, so for a couple weeks I put out food and water hoping to gain their trust so NAR could Trap, Neuter, and Return. It was explained to me that more than likely the kittens were too old by this time to socialize them. The kitties never returned so now I volunteer with NAR going to the store every other Saturday to clean, feed, water, and exercise the kitties. This is an amazing group of dedicated people.

My husband and I adopted our 2 cats in August from Northeast Animal Rescue. We never had pets together in the 6 years we've been together, and NAR made the process so easy. Our brother and sister cats are 2 years old and were given back to NAR due to unforeseen circumstances with their first home. Their foster was AMAZING, and after communicating online and on the phone, she set up a special visit for us at PetSmart. We stayed in the private room for nearly 2 hours and couldn't bear the thought of not having them in our lives. The adoption process was smooth, thorough, and very warm. We had so many questions, and everyone couldn't have been more helpful. Our kitties have adjusted so well over the past two months. We absolutely adore and love them beyond words and can't imagine our days without them now. I type this while Leia is snuggled on my lap and Luke is sleeping nearby. I can't recommend NAR highly enough, and I would love to start volunteering.

Northeast animal rescue is so dedicated to making sure that their cats are placed in the right home for the cat and the people. Not only are cats in their care well taken care of but also the cats that are feral that they trap and spay and and or neuter and release back into their own colony. I wish everyone was as dedicated to their animals as Northeast animal rescue there would not be an over population of cats on the street and cats in shelters that get euthanized.

I volunteer, foster and have adopted from NAR. All the animals (cats and dogs) are cared for to the highest standard I've ever experienced. Foster homes are encouraged to keep in touch with adopters and adopters are encouraged to keep in touch via email and social media. As a foster home, it's great to see a pet you fostered grow up in a loving home. As an adopter, I know the animals have received proper vet care and socialized in foster homes. And, as a volunteer, I know we have a great group of people who care for the cats, interact with them and help promote our animals. I'm proud to be part of this organization and hope we can continue our mission for many years to come.

My daughter just adopted her second cat through Northeast Animal Rescue. Jayme Bader was very accommodating, available and patient. She helped us choose the cutest little guy! She has offered her services and extended herself to all of our needs. My mother has also adopted through this agency and I have never seen her so happy. Jayme has helped me through the process of adopting a blind cat through ASPCA which was going to be euthanized due to her disability. This organization has a true mission and is devoted to rescuing these beautiful animals who cannot speak for themselves.I would not deal with anyone else and will continue to support Northeast Animal Rescue. Keep up the good work.

It brings tears to my eyes to see the lovely creatures in cages but I also know they are so well cared for until they find their forever home.

I am a cat owner for over 30 years. I lost my last cat and thought I could never bring up another cat. I saw my two kittens and knew I had to have them. The adoption process was so gratifying to see the questions NAR asked to make sure their animals go to the right home. My kittens came with full documentation and
they were both spayed. This helped us tremendously. One of the kittens unfortunately was predisposed to an ailment that sometimes happens to shelter cats. NAR helped me cut costs for dental extractions for my precious puzzle. she is now two and looking so well. we are hopeful that she will continue to be well. both the cats are wonderful and we are so please and happy to once again be a family. Jamie is the most caring and supportive caregiver of this organization.

We have adopted three cats from this organization. When one got sick, Jamie was very supportive and advised us well. The last cat was fostered by us for two months, during which the organization assisted us and covered vet costs. We finally decided to keep him and they did not charge any fee. I think they really care about the animals and want to place them with responsible owners. They are readily available to answer questions and will help you throughout the adoption process.

I have adopted 5 cats from NAR in the last 9 years. They are professional, compassionate, dedicated people. The cats are wonderful members of my family who I love very much. These people screen potential donors, work hard to make compatible matches, and spend a great deal of time and effort caring for these cats. I keep in touch with them to let them know how my cats are doing. Their commitment to saving animals, and placing the animals in good homes with loving families is commendable. They work miracles with limited resources.
