The idea for a passenger train, to be used for heritage tourism, has been discussed for
more than 16 years. Toward that end, principals worked first to gain use of railroad tracks
from Vienna to Hurlock as early as 2001. After these efforts failed to inspire Dorchester’s
powers that be and met with resistance from local Vienna residents, a different, more
viable route was chosen. Beginning in October 2007, efforts have been concentrated on
gaining access and ownership of the 6.4 miles of railroad tracks and associated property
from the town of Hurlock to the town of Preston.
It is important to note that while the entity named NDRR has been incorporated for use
legally, it will be known by a more engaging and descriptive name to be selected by the
board after the track is given to Hurlock.
NDRR was formed as a 501 (c)3, nonprofit corporation in 2005. This entity is governed by
a Board of Trustees and is actively engaged in bringing this project to fruition. Although
small in size, NDRR has gained wide public and private support. As all progress hinges on
Hurlock gaining control/ownership of the land previously mentioned and asking NDRR to
assume responsibility for moving the project forward, NDRR has not moved ahead with
the full plan of public engagement, whether through membership in its organization or
fundraising efforts.
