Causes: Nonprofit Management
Mission: To strengthen the capacity, impact and visibility of the nonprofit sector of westchester county for a more just and caring community.
Programs: In 2016, nonprofit westchester (npw) built on previous work to strengthen the capacity and visibility of nonprofits while advocating for the sector, focusing on its 142 member organizations. Advocacy: npw focused on three major advocacy initiatives:1) advocating for a thriving community through education and advocacy about the county budget. Npw sustained the keep westchester thriving alliance of 10 diverse coalitions, who collaboratively organized two forums: "fiscal fairness for westchester county: funding the common good" in january, attended by close to 100 people, and "our budget. Our values. A community conversation" in an innovative forum to discuss the county and state budget in september. The forum was attended by over 100 community leaders. Npw also led a successful campaign to sustain nonprofit funding in the 2017 county budget. 2) supporting the statewide restore opportunity now campaign to increase new york state funding for staff in human service organizations. Npw hosted local meetings and facilitated advocacy efforts as part of this statewide campaign. 3) expanding the #914nonprofitsvote non-partisan initiative to encourage nonprofit employees and clients to vote. Npw partnered with community votes, westchester children's association and community voices heard to train 26 staff from member organizations on non-partisan voter engagement. Participating organizations subsequently obtained pledges to vote from over 140 people, and helped those who needed to register to vote. Npw sent postcards to all of these individuals to remind them to vote in the election. Visibility: npw secured 28 media placements in entities such as westchester county business journal, patch, daily voice and others, resulting in 2,343,284 media impressions. Npw also continued the #givingtuesday campaign in partnership with the journal news & lohud. Com, encouraging people to contribute time or money during the holiday season. Capacity: npw provides training and networking opportunities for nonprofit staff, board member and volunteers. These events have two goals: to increase the knowledge and skills for nonprofit professionals, and to build relationships between nonprofits in order to facilitate collaboration. In 2016, npw produced 9 member-wide events and 15 affinity groups that were attended by 522 people. In addition to the advocacy events highlighted above, capacity building events offered to all members included "maximizing safety & security for nonprofits", "leading the conversation: a new narrative for human services" workshop and "leading the conversation" webinar. While all programs and meetings include some networking, npw also hosted a summer cocktail mixer that focused specifically on networking. Fifteen affinity group meetings provided the opportunity for nonprofit professionals working in finance, human resources, marketing, ceo/executive directors and in "small & mighty organizations to engage in guided conversations on relevant topics. In summary, npw helped keep westchester thriving through its efforts that empowered the nonprofit sector.
