Causes: Education
Mission: Protect and preserve the Upper Newport Bay and its watershed through education, restoration, research and advocacy.
Results: The Newport Bay Conservancy is located within Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve in Newport Beach, California. Upper Newport Bay is the largest of the few remaining natural coastal estuaries and one of the most valuable resources in Southern California. The Conservancy is the only volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the unique estuarial ecosystems of Upper Newport Bay, and to educating the public about the Bay’s rich resources. Annually, our volunteers connect with over 50,000 members of the public in outreach or program activities. Over the years, our volunteers have contributed over 120,000 hours of service in programs supporting the Bay.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Educate 36,297 members of the public about the ecological importance of the bay by providing volunteer support/staffing at the peter and mary muth interpretive center every day but mondays. The conservancy hosted field trips teaching pre-k through 6th grade (2,671) and high school as well as some college students (1,117) students throughout the school year, sponsoring some of the transportation costs associated with getting the schools to/from the bay. Also hosted free public walking tours and guided kayak tours inspire another 1,405 people. Hosted 11 special events throughout the year that connected another 3,529 people to the bay. Conducted 45 restoration events, engaging 477 one time volunteers in order to help remove invasive species of plants and plant native plants to enhance the habitat of the bay.
