Mission: The mission of new women new yorkers is to empower immigrant women to get their first paying, fulfilling job in the nyc workforce, or to pursue higher education; and to provide a safe, transformative space where immigrant women can build community and support each other, experience and demonstrate leadership, and share their stories.
Programs: Lead, our flagship program, begins with a free, unique series of interactive workshops that combine job readiness training, teamwork, and leadership development. In direct complement to our workshop series, mock interviews and career counseling sessions, field visits of company offices, and roundtable discussions with immigrant women professionals are offered every month to lead participants, providing them with further job readiness and networking training and practice, and opportunities to grow their professional network. In 2017, we ran 6 series of our lead program, serving a total of 71 women. We also held four mock interview and career counseling sessions, three field visits, and one roundtable discussion, serving a total of 132 young immigrant women with these additional programs alone. Key goals are to support and prepare young immigrant women for entry or reintegration into the workforce, or for the pursuit of higher studies. We empower them to negotiate the transition to paying and fulfilling jobs, attain self-sufficiency, and achieve independence. Specific outcomes for our participants include: increased job and education readiness and attainment; increased self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-expectations; improved english communication skills; and community building and enhanced cultural dialogue.
new women new yorkers aims to offer a safe, transformative space for immigrant women to meet and support each other, and to learn and speak up about the issues they care for. In 2017, our community building programming included quarterly meetups and the community ambassadors group, which creates a leadership loop by giving lead graduates an opportunity to contribute their time and skills to nwny's programs and community of immigrant women.
new women new yorkers also aims to create a space where immigrant women can share their stories, and create public awareness and positive dialogue about immigrants in general, and about immigrant women in particular. Our 2017 programming included our blog, a 5-week storytelling program for 11 immigrant women followed by 3 public performances, and our photography and storytelling project real people. Real lives. Women immigrants of new york, featuring 16 immigrant women and shown at one venue in december 2017.
