Mission: New directions, inc. Was organized pursuant to the general nonprofit corporation law of the state of california for the purposes of empowering men and women who served in the military and their families to lead productive and fulfilling lives. New directions, inc. Continues to do business as new directions for veterans (ndvets). Since 1992, ndvets has helped our nation's heroes successfully address the challenges of life after military service. Ndvets offers support and assistance to los angeles-area homeless veterans and veterans at risk for homelessness to effectively transform their lives through a rich array of services tailored to meet the needs of each individual veteran. Primary services offered include affordable housing placements and development, vocational and educational services, workforce development and job training, case management, mental health counseling, and substance abuse treatment, in the context of its transitional housing programs for both men and women veteran
Programs: Gpd program for men and women: building 116 houses the new directions regional opportunity center which serves male homeless veterans in a 156 bed transitional shelter where veterans can stay for up to 24 months. In 2017, the transitional shelter served 263 veterans and provided case management, clothing, food, housing location and placement, individual and group therapy, job training and placement, legal assistance, mental health treatment, remedial education, substance abuse treatment, and transportation. Keaveney house and mitchell house comprise the new directions oasis for veteran women which serves female homeless veterans in a 9 bed transitional shelter where veterans can stay for up to 24 months. In 2017, the transitional shelter served 22 veterans and provided case management, clothing, food, housing location and placement, individual and group therapy, job training and placement, legal assistance, mental health treatment, remedial education, substance abuse treatment, and transportation. Additionally in october 2017 va restructured it's gpd program, by consolidating services for both men and women under three types of services - bridge program, clinical program and low demand program. The bridge housing program served 95 clients in 2017.
ssvf program: the supportive services for veterans families (ssvf) program helps veterans through outreach, permanent supportive housing placement, and case management. The program provides transportation, housing (can be housing retention to prevent eviction and/or 1st month and security deposits), food for participants, as well as legal services. It also provides food gift cards to a grocery store for participants in need. Ssvf is va funded and is designed to prevent homelessness among single veterans and families. In 2017, assistance in the forms of move-in rental assistance, case management and related move in costs were provided to 627 individual veterans.
hchv program: building 257 houses the welcome center and bride housing program which serves male homeless veterans in a 46 bed transitional shelter where veterans can stay for up to 6 months. In 2017, the transitional shelter served 483 veterans and provided case management, clothing, food, housing location and placement, legal assistance, and transportation.
clinical program (dmh), permanent supportive housing programs (hacla), vocational program (dol)clinical program (dmh)the clinical program serves homeless veterans interested in improving their mental health and provides assessments core services, individual mental health, and specialized services to any veteran including those who are ineligible for va medical services. Permanent supportive housing programs (hacla)burbank bungalows, developed in partnership with housing corp, houses up to 11 homeless and low income veterans in 1 bedroom apartments. El monte veterans village, developed in partnership with mercy housing california, houses up to 40 homeless and disabled veterans in studio apartments. Guy galbadon senior veteran apartments, developed in partnership with east los angeles community corporation, houses up to 32 homeless and disabled senior veterans age 55 and older in 1 bedroom apartments. New directions sepulveda i and new directions sepulveda ii, developed in partnership with a community of friends, houses up to 147 homeless and disabled veterans in studio apartments. Veterans village of glendale, developed in partnership with thomas safran & associates, houses 15 homeless and low income veterans in 1, 2, or 3 bedroom apartments. Vocational program (dol)the vocational program (workforce development) serves homeless veterans interested in working and works closely with ndvets transitional programs. In 2016, the vocational program served 87 participants through classroom occupational and life skills trainings 89% of whom were placed into employment.
