Mission: Nvci reduces the burden of cancer for nevada, the nation, and the world through innovative and collaborative research, education and patient care.
Programs: Patient-centered care: nvci focuses on cancer diagnosis, treatment and care. Accredited by the joint commission, nvci is recognized for its dedication to quality healthcare. Specialists have expertise in an array of cancers including melanoma, leukemia, lymphoma, prostate, breast, bladder, kidney, gastrointestinal and lung. Services include chemotherapy, radiation, pathology and diagnostic imaging. Nvci is equipped with pet/ct, mri, gamma camera, nuclear medicine and digital mammography. A mobile unit brings digital mammography directly to nevadans. Nvci also offers psychosocial and nutrition counseling, a survivorship clinic and pain mamagement.
research: nvci is engaged in focused, innovative research in science and clinical investigations regarding the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer. Nvci scientists are working to decipher the basic biology of cancer initiation and progression as well as to glean mechanisms for potential novel treatment strategies. A key part of nvci's research efforts is in clinical trials. Nvci opened over 80 trials through 2011. Significantly, 420 patients have consented to join trials, of which 355 have been treated. Nvci offers phase i, ii, and iii clinical trials. Novel drugs, not otherwise available in nevada, are made available in these trials.
outreach and education: nvci provides programs for the diverse needs of nevadans in schools, workplaces, community centers, senior centers, faith-based organizations and union halls throughout nevada. Patient "navigators" assist with treatment and follow-up care and provide referrals to community resources. Offices in northern nevada, combined with the las vegas office, have navigated about 200 cancer patients and their families. More than 800 nevadans have been reached through support group meetings, community education programs, health fairs and community activities.
