Mission: Neighborhood houses mission is: to inspire and connect by strengthening families and our community. Founded in 1945, neighborhood house is a full-service community center in the settlement house tradition, serving nearly 3,500 individuals and their families at all stages of life, regardless of income or background.
Programs: The early childhood service (ecs) program: the goal of the ecs program is to develop and support high quality, community and family-focused early childhood education. Last year, the program served 84 infants and children between the ages of six weeks to five years. The number served was down from prior year levels but because of lower turnover, the service hours were about the same. Children participate in multi-disciplinary activities that enhance early brain development and cognitive skills. In a new state of wisconsin review completed in april 2017, our ecs program again earned a top youngstar 5 rating from the state of wisconsin, placing it in the top 6% of preschool programs in the milwaukee area. The program continues to operate under the prestigious early headstart partnership program, under the coordination of our partners at next door.
youth and teens programs: our youth and teen after school and summer camp programs served 496 in 2016/2017. The school-aged youth program included a licensed, youngstar 5-rated after school component for children ages 6-12 years. Age-appropriate activities are organized around a group structure and are designed to develop a strong sense of self, as well as provide a balance of social and academic skill preparation. Neighborhood house also operates the safe place afterschool and summer camp programs at albert story elementary school, in cooperation with the milwaukee public schools. Our story school program served 140 children and youth last year. Our older youth program, called teens on the move, promotes positive behaviors for youth 13-19 year of age. Teens participate in homework help, organized sports, teen leadership and enrichment activities and youth employment and career development workshops. Both the school-aged and teen programs of neighborhood house offered a full-day, ten week summer camp program that offered age-appropriate activities are organized around a group structure and are designed to develop a strong sense of self, as well as social and academic skills.
the international learning center (ilc): our ilc prepares newly-arrived refugees, mainly from southeast asia and east africa, for self-sufficiency and success by conducting english as a second language (esl), citizenship classes and financial literacy classes and helping participants prepare for and seek employment. Ilc served 556 refugees in 2016/2017 (retaining our role as the largest educator of refugees in wisconsin). Twenty-six of our learners earned u. S. Citizenship last year, 67 secured new employment and 134 retained prior employment. To offer whole family services, the ilc also provides early childhood education for the children of adult ilc students. In addition, the ilc continued to expand its contract work to provide job training skills to our refugee students during the year, responding in large part to major employer layoffs in the area. That employment work is done both at our original ilc location and now also at our main facility on richardson place. We also successfully brought our older refugee program for refugee seniors into our main facility in recent years. In addition, we extended our partnership with the southeast asian literacy program (seal) over the last year. The link brings 40-60 burmese youth to neighborhood house twice a week for homework help, english classes, and mentoring. Finally, we were the lead agency in a number of refugee programs in 2016/2017, including producing the popular world refugee day events at downtown milwaukee locations.
