Causes: Crime & Law, Public Interest Law
Mission: Our Mission is to promote justice through legal representation and education for our low income neighbors as a way of demonstrating Christ's love. Our Vision is best summed up by Psalm 82:3-4 "Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."
Results: During the year, 4,392 people attended one of our neighborhood-based intakes seeking legal counsel and representation. 5,244 people participated in a preventative legal education seminar to learn about their legal rights and responsibilities. Our 40-person staff team and 130 volunteers had the following impact: Consumer Justice Program: 428 foreclosures were stopped and 140 tenants in Marion County were given legal advice concerning their landlord-tenant relationship. In addition, $263,266 in corrected IRS tax liabilities and refunds were awarded to 148 clients. Immigrant Justice Program: 286 applications filed for refugees to either become legal permanent residents or to bring a family member to the US. 111 immigrant children who arrived in the US without immigration status applied for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Project Grace: 950 people attended our expungement help desk at the City-County Building where they were guided through the step-by-step process of how to clear their criminal records. 318 people attended educational seminars to learn about the new Indiana expungement law. Victim Justice Program: 165 victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking received representation in a family law matter. 105 immigrants who were victims of violent crime had U-Visas filed which will provide them with work authorization and legal status in the US. Pilot Projects: We created a program, Project PEACE that addresses family conflict with comprehensive coaching and peaceful mediation. We partnered with HVAF in order to remove barriers to long-term stability for homeless veterans.
