Neighborhood Bike Works is a nonprofit organization in the city of Philadelphia. They work directly with at-risk urban youth between the ages of 8 and 18, providing education and opportunity through bicycling and related topics. The individuals directly affiliated with this organization are some of the most patient and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They go out of their way every single day and in all they do to meet and exceed the needs of the youth they help.
neighbor hood bike works is like a home away from home, I am always accepted there and i have made some many new friends since i have been there. I can remember my first day at nbw like it was yesterday, i was greeted with such warm welcomes even though i wasn't a member just yet. Since i have become a member of nbw i have accomplished so much, from becoming a junior cyclist to doing touring rides and racing with " the big guys " ; so to speak. the instructors have taught me so much and even though i had a specific career in mind, this non-profit has given me the alternative of doing what ever i want to do in my life. I believe i have become even stronger than i thought i was and now know that if i start with the end in mind i know i can accomplish anything obstacle thrown at me.

I worked at Bike Works for three years and it was a fantastical experience. I came into Bike Works with a love of recycling and bike repair and left with a mission to empower and educate the youth of Philadelphia through hands on learning. I now work for the Philadelphia School District as a Math Teacher. Bike Works was the springboard to my job with the District! Not a day goes by that I don't thank my lucky starts that I had the blessing to work for NBW and all their glory! Thanks NBW!!
I am a guidance counselor in a Phila eLementary school. I have had a bikes week program after school for many years. It is fantastic for the kids .They are learning meaningful , important skills. They are woking with very caring adults in a small group. They see the benefits of working hard week by week to earn a bike. They feel very special being in the group. I have always picked a mix of kids including some who have academic and or behavioral challenges Bike works is a place for them to find success and their peers look at them in a different light. NBW ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I first learned about NBW through my scout troop. We went there to learn about bikes for a badge. Then I did the summer camp and got hooked. Now I am a member of the racing team and mounting biking club. I thoroughly enjoy the program and I believe that every child in the Philadelphia area with an interest in bikes or mechanics should complete a program. It will make them a better person.

Neighborhood bike works (NBW) is AWESOME. they help children understand that they need to work to succeed. they have a build-a-bike program for children to build bicycles for themselves and teach the children how to put the bike pieces together. NBW has other programs such as the racing team and the mountain biking club. I ride with the mountain biking club and we ride to Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park and ride the philly mountain biking assoc. trails there.
Neighborhood Bike Works is a wonderful organization that has introduced me to the wonderful world of Cycling, from Road to Mountain, as well as taught me how to do everything from changing a tube, to overhauling a bottom bracket. I've learned how to maintain my bikes, how to interact with adults as well as young children, as well as ride alongside traffic. The Staff and Volunteers at NBW are knowledgeable, and kind people that are passionate about cycling as well as being mentors to the students who continually return and support NBW. I have volunteered and taken Earn-A-Bike Courses, and I am part of the NBW Racing Team, this group spans both Road and Mountain cycling, and is a group of Earn-A-Bike Graduates, ranging from 10 to 18 years of age. We rode alongside staff, board members, volunteers, parents, and enthusiasts to Harrisburg in the Summer of 2010 to meet with representatives to raise money for the program. NBW has helped me lose 40 lbs, 30 in the Summer of 2009, and 10 recently. They have also opened doors for the Racing Team to join Amateur // Semi - Pro Teams such as QCW, and Tri-State-Velo, and has gotten some involved in charity cycling events such as the MS 150 City to Shore. Neighborhood Bike Works has opened doors spanning from racing, to volunteering, and even jobs. It has taught hundreds of children from Philadelphia, and surrounding cities how to ride safely, build, and maintain bicycles.

You can't visit this "bike shop in a basement" and come away without a BIG SMILE!
I brought a small troop of Cub Scouts here to fulfill requirements for the Bicycle pin. NBW tailored their program for us, offered a 2-session class on bike maintenance and repair - it was perfect!
My son had such a good time at those sessions that I enrolled him in the 2 week summer camp. Probably the best value summer camp in the city! No end of fun and the pride of knowing that he built a bike himself... and can now fix my bike too!
