Mission: The mission of the neighborhood advocacy center is to holistically support, advance and defend the basic human rights of low-income and vulnerable families in our community who are at risk of criminal convictions or termination of parental rights. The vision of the nac is to fill the gap in the legal representation of the poor that is contributing to family dysfunction, recidivism, domestic violence and socio-economic upheaval. We aim to operate as a specialized multi-disciplinary legal office that holistically supports, advances and defends at-risk families in our community, providing essential legal, social work, and mental health services.
Programs: The neighborhood advocacy center provides indigent families involved in abuse, neglect, dependency and termination of parental rights proceedings in mecklenburg county, north carolina free legal and social work services through a client-centered, holistic model of representation. The neighborhood advocacy center seeks to reunify families where the children have been removed from the home by the department of social services and to prevent the unnecessary placement and prolonged stay of children in foster care. At any given time, the neighborhood advocacy center represents approximately seventy-five (75) clients.
the neighborhood advocacy center provides free legal and social work services through a client-centered, holistic model of representation. That model includes a managing attorney and social worker. In addition to representing clients in the courtroom, the managing attorney also runs the family advocacy clinic, where law students from the charlotte school of law intern for the neighborhood advocacy center under the supervision of the managing attorney. The law student interns work closely with the managing attorney and provide legal services to the neighborhood advocacy center's clients.
