Mission: Neighbor for neighbor ("nfn")is an interfaith organization that demonstrates faith by action;serves the poor by providing services;educates the community about poverty; seeks justice for poor and powerless through advocacy; encourages all people to realize their potential. Neighbor for neighbor ("nfn") was established in 1966 when several area churches, businesses and concerned citizens banded together to respond to the needs of the poor and disenfranchised. Nfn incorporated in 1968 and became a 501c (3) in 1971. Nfn is privately funded and is not a united way agency or government agency. Serving 100% of the tulsa and surrounding metropolitan area. Nfn provides millions of dollars worth of goods and services to the poor and disenfranchised each year. A majority of that amount is from donations and volunteer services. Programs: Neighbor for neighbor has ten basic programs which provide thousand of services to the indigent, low income and uninsured population each year. Nfn services are two fold: 1) survival---for clients and patients in crisis that need basic services to survive--such as food,shelter, and medical care: and 2) guidance--- for clients and patients that need additional services and a plan to press forward out of their impoverished or unhealthy predicament. Summaries of nfn's programs are as follows:nfn health programs: at nfn, thousands of people receive medical,dental, and optical care from wonderfulstaff and volunteer medical professionals. Nfn free medical clinic provides acute and systemic care that patients would not be able to receiveotherwise. There are specialty clinics such as diabetic, women's and cardiac. In addition to the regular clinics, a cornerstone of our current medicalprogram is the minor surgery site four days a week. Nfn prescription dispensary provides prescription screening and prescriptions. Nfn helps many of our patients to receive free medications directly from the manufacturer for several months. Nfn also provides prescriptions from our shelves. Nfn does not assist with narcotics or psychiatric drugs or select expensive medications. Nfn dental clinic provides acute and restorative services. Nfn provides emergency extractions, restorative services, oral surgery, and cleanings and children's services. Nfn eyeglass clinic provides free eye exams, glasses, frames and subsidizes the cost of eyeglass lenses for adults and children. Nfn is currently partnering with the tulsa downtown lions club to increase these services. Nfn family assistance program: nfn provides bus token, rental assistance, utility bills assistance, work boots & uniforms, identification cards and other basic services. Financial counseling and job referrals are also provided. Nfn food distributionprogram: nfn's food pantry supplements monthly food supply for low-income or disadvantaged families. The clients that are not elderly or disabledare asked to contribute by becoming a volunteer if they need help for more than a few months. Nfn's food supply is received in two ways: monthly purchases from local companies and by donations from churches, schools, individualcommunity members,employee food drives in private companies. Nfn life skills program: nfn has life skill classes and individual coaching sessions; ged program; job placement; and classes that address nutrition, addiction, anger management and communication. Volunteer certified therapists are available two days a week at nfn---referrals for other psychiatric services are also provided when appropriate. This program was based on the adage "teach a man to fish and he willhave food for a lifetime. " the goal of these classes is to help people understand how to break habits that hinder their ability to have a healthy life and a better future. Nfn legal clinic: the nfn legal clinic serves our clients by drafting legal documents which help families and children with emergency needs as well as provides relief for clients oppressed by deceptive financial schemes. Negotiations are also handled on behaf of our clients with mortgage companies. Landlords, car dealerships and other contracts. Nfn circle housing programs: the home ownership program is for low-income families and the home repair program is for the low-income elderly or disabled that own their own home. Community projects: community projects distributes free books, clothing and household items. Community holiday party for children and their families. Advocacy and achievements: nfn has provided substantial services for 44 years. Nfn has been working with the poor to fight poverty. Nfn conceived and aided in the implementation of magnet schools which served ofr a model for the desegregation plan adopted by the tuls public schools in 1971; nfn initially established the precursor to the tulsa community food bank; nfn provided office space and support. For the initial university of tulsa free legal clinic; nfn strongly represented the poor on the coalition for fair utility rates; amd a multitude of ther advocacy projects through its daily services.
