Programs: The Philosophy of NBS Animal Rescue NBS Animal Rescue was founded on October 12, 2011 by Aaron Fortin, Rebecca Akins, and Jaime Wolfe. We are a 100% foster based canine rescue that is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of healthy, well-balanced, dogs and puppies into loving families. Our primary goals include the rescue and rehabilitation of homeless animals in need, educating our community regarding proper pet care, and to participate in community youth outreach programs. Some key components to our rescue mission are as follows: *We spay/neuter every rescue dog in order to help end the cycle of unwanted litters. *We treat each and every dog as if it we our own in order to give it back the respect, love and dignity it deserves. *We maintain the highest standards of care for every dog we come in contact with, including the highest quality veterinary care, housing, love, training and compassion. Rescue NBS Animal Rescue has a strong working relationship with several in state animal shelters and animal rescue groups that work together to network homeless dogs facing euthanasia with rescue groups that have open foster homes. In addition, we also take in owner surrender dogs and puppies from situations that are beyond the owners control and in the instances in which the current owner is acting in the best interest of the animal. We are a non-breed specific dog rescue; however, we do tend to specialize in small breed dogs. We network with other groups for help when we are approached about cats and other species of animals. Our rescue operation is 100% volunteer based with 100% of our available funds going to support our primary goals as listed above. Medical Care NBS Animal Rescue has a structured and comprehensive medical care procedure that all of our rescued animals go through to ensure that they are healthy and up to date on all age appropriate veterinary care. It is our organizations belief that no animal in our rescue be placed in an adoptive home until it has undergone, and passed, a thorough and comprehensive wellness exam by a licensed veterinarian and received all age appropriate vaccines and health care screenings. NBS Animal Rescue has a strong working relationship with the Animal Clinic of Sterling Heights, All About Animals Rescue, and Wilson Veterinary Hospital. Detailed veterinary records, receipts, and copies of all veterinary testing reports are kept both digitally and in hard copy and a compiled history of veterinary routines are given to each adoptive family. All animals adopted through NBS Animal Rescue have received all of the following veterinary care procedures: Spay or Neuter Surgery Microchip Insertion Bath, nail trim, and ear cleaning De-worming for internal parasites DHPP Vaccine Rabies Vaccine (age appropriate) Heartworm Test (age appropriate) Heartworm preventative Flea/Tick preventative After completing extensive research, met with several licensed veterinarians, and collaborated with local well established animal rescue groups, NBS Animal Rescue adopted a mandatory spay/neuter policy in which all of our dogs and puppies are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. We feel that this is the most responsible stance our rescue can take in the fight against over population of dogs and cats in our nation. In addition, after researching the statistics on lost pets and the number of pets who are reunited with their families, NBS Animal Rescue also adopted the policy that all adopted pets will be microchipped prior to adoption. We feel that together, these two policies not only greatly help to control the number of animals who end up in animal shelters across our nation, but that they also offer our adoptive families the peace of mind of a healthy and safe pet. While all animals in our rescue are provided with the above mentioned veterinary care, some of our rescued animals require special veterinary care, surgical procedures, or additional care by a veterinary specialist. NBS Animal Rescue believes that each individual animal’s pre-existing or developing health concerns be evaluated by veterinary professionals and a prognosis for a healthy, pain free, and happy future in an adoptive home be the primary concern. Our rescue has fundraised money to support bladder stone surgery, double luxating patella surgery and extensive dental work on a number of other dogs. We believe that an animal’s quality of life and prognosis for a pain free future should be the guiding factor in decisions that involve surgical procedures, extensive specialist care, or the necessity of humane euthanasia. Education NBS Animal Rescue prides itself on sharing our collective experience, knowledge, and passion for animals with each and every one of our supporters, adopters, and foster families. As a responsible rescue organization we ensure that all of our dogs are seen by a licensed veterinarian for a general health wellness exam, are current on all age appropriate vaccines, heartworm preventative, flea/tick preventative, are Heartworm tested, have been properly de-wormed, spayed/neutered, and microchipped prior to being placed up for adoption. Not only do we feel that it is imperative for us to make certain that all of these health protocols are done with each and every animal that comes into our rescue, but we also ensure that this information, as well as future veterinary care expectations, are clear to all of our adopters. NBS Animal Rescue provides each adoptive family with a comprehensive veterinary history as well as a schedule of upcoming veterinary care needs. In addition, we strive to educate all of our adopters of the necessity of annually vaccinating your pet, providing monthly, year round, heartworm and internal/external parasite preventatives, and ensuring that a pet receives yearly veterinary exams. Dental care, knee and patella concerns, eyesight, hearing, and mobility issues are also discussed in detail with adopters who are adopting a senior pet, with special information given regarding these issues in the form of literature and online resources. Proper socialization, training methods, potty training, introducing a puppy to new members of the family, and puppy health concerns are discussed in detail with adopters who are adopting a dog as well. In addition to educating our adoptive families, we have also made it a priority to educate our supporters and those who send in e-mail inquiries regarding our dogs about proper care for their pets. Many times when processing an application or an inquiry we will be told that the applicants current pets are not up to date on veterinary care because they “live in the country,” “never take their pets out of their home,” or for various other reasons. Our volunteers make a conscious effort to share information, educational resources, and veterinary links on the Internet to help educate our supporters regarding the dangers of not providing your pets with proper routine veterinary care. Our supporters are grateful for the information, personal experiences with dogs who were not properly cared for, and the resources and contacts we are able to provide them with in order to get their pet proper veterinary care. While educating our supporters and adopters regarding proper veterinary care is an important goal of ours, NBS Animal Rescue also prides itself on sharing information about proper canine nutrition programs, dog food analysis and grading websites, exercise, and training information as well. Our goal is to help our adoptive families offer a well-rounded care and wellness routine for their adoptive canine and ensure that we are able to educate our supporters on the importance of proper nutrition and exercise as well. A comprehensive list of local veterinarians, trainers, dog food analysis information, and proper nutrition pamphlets and Internet resources are shared with each of our adoptive families. Collaboration with other rescues and rescue efforts One of our founding principles at NBS Animal Rescue is to collaborate with local animal rescues, shelters, and animal businesses in order to form a cohesive network of resources that provide animal aid to homeless animals in need. NBS Animal Rescue prides itself on having an open line of communication, a strong sense of teamwork, and an honest and respectful relationship with many of our local area’s animal rescue organizations and supporting businesses. We are always willing to work together with other like-minded organizations, who put the best interest of the individual animal at the forefront of their organization, operate with integrity and honesty, and share a deep rooted love and passion for rescuing and rehabilitating homeless animals. To date, we have formed an extensive network of like-minded organizations including other animal rescue groups, veterinary offices, county animal shelters, groomers, and animal trainers. Together we have shared experience, contacts, informational resources, and have supported one another during our individual efforts to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals in our nation. NBS Animal Rescue is committed to fostering a strong relationship between our current rescue colleagues and building additional relationships in the future to help rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt homeless animals. Working with the people at NBS has been great. They are wonderful and caring people who want to be sure the perfect rescue dog go with the right owner. Over a period of a 2-3 years, we ended up with two of their rescues. These are the most incredible family members I could ever imagine. These two dogs want nothing more than to be loved and to give love. We owe so much of our own happiness now to the care and work of NBS. Bailey and Cole have bonded and are inseparable. They go everywhere with us.

Bailey came to us during a time of transition in the family. The people at NBS did a wonderful job of seeing the match between the personality of the dog along with the dog's need to the style and ability of the family. We are really deeply appreciative of their effort. The spent time talking to us first, spent time watching the dog interact with us and then followed through with more monitoring to be sure we had not encountered any problems. Bailey very quickly became a full member of the family and often seems to take charge because of her love. Thank you, NBS! We hope to get another wonderful dog from them in the near future. Duncan

I cannot begin to tell you how great this organization is. They really care about their animals. They are very professional and make sure that the correct pet goes to the right home. When I adopted my dog she not only was microchiped, spayed and very well groomed. He provided a leash and collar in two weeks of food. They also presented me with spayed and very well groomed. He provided a leash and collar in two weeks of food. They also presented me with a Binder with all informative information including vet records. I would highly recommend adopting from NBS animal rescue.

NBS is a great organization. The dog that I wanted to adopt, had had already found a new home by the time my application had been approved. But within a few days, they sent me a picture of another dog, and shortly after, NBS brought this dog, Charlie, a superfriendly Cavalier King Charles, to our home and Charlie has been making our lives better ever since. They were also most helpful with giving real useful advise on house training in the weeks after the adoption. I also like it a lot that they keep in touch and do followups continously. Clearly, their priority is to place the dogs in good home forever!

Warren police calling NBS when we found JoJo 2 yrs ago was the best thing that could have happen to us. It was the luckiest day for all, JoJo found a forever home and we found the best little dog ever. I am really impressed with the great work NBS does. We will always be grateful for them and will continue to support them.

We found out about NBS about a year ago when we needed help with a dog we found wondering around the neighborhood. The police brought NBS with them and they rescue the little dog, she was in terrible shape, my husband did not think she was going to make it. We kept in touch with NBS and ended up adopting her. Her name is JoJo now and she is the best, it's amazing how much love this little dog can give in spite of what she might have gone through before we found her. I can not thank NBS enough for the work they do and their dedication. I tell my story to everyone I know in the hopes they will adopt as well.

NBS Rescue is the BEST. Such a wonderful group of people. I have had Tilly since April 2015 and she has been amazing. Such a smart little Chihuahua, a little too smart, we have to talk in code around her and sometimes do charades, which she is picking up on as well.

Every year NBS has a reunion party so the pup-parents can bring their furbabies back for a visit with their previous foster parents.

It's just wonderful, you cannot go wrong with choosing a new member of your family from NBS Rescue.

After the passing of my best friend "Molly" I immediately needed to fill the void in my heart and the emptiness in our home. I applied with ANOTHER rescue (not NBS) for a Chihuahua, drove 1-1/2 hrs, met the dog and was then told she came as a bonded pair and all the issues that came with both of them. I only have room for one other dog not 2. I was not impressed with the way this 1st rescue didn't give me any of the "issues" before I drove so far and to then try and push a 2nd Chihuahua on to me. I left pretty disgusted. I was still grieving from the loss of Molly I didn't have the time to invest in 2 dogs that would rather hide in a corner and die than to be held.

So I go back to my saved searches and Elsa and Tilly were the next 2 I was interested in meeting. I filled out the application and added an additional background of myself and home. I think it was the next day they started calling my Vet and references. I liked that. They weren't going to waste their time and they weren't into wasting my time. I ended up applying for Tilly (only because my mother comes over and takes care of my dogs while I'm at work and she was uncomfortable with trying to work with a hearing impaired dog).

During the week I borrowed my friend's dog to help us in our grieving. Aaron and I set up the home visit appointment and a few days later he came out with Tilly. The meet and greet went smooth. "Suzy" got along great with Tilly. Aaron went over the notebook chocked full of info (Yes! There is a detailed notebook!) and he felt comfortable to leave Tilly with us. I signed up for the trial period just in case Tilly was not happy here I wasn't going to force her to stay forever.

After a few days I emailed NBS and told them a trial period wasn't necessary, I'm keeping her! My other dog Suzy never cared for Molly, basically just tolerated her. Suzy, who is 12, never played or anything but LOVES to play with Tilly! Tilly has pretty much renewed Suzy's youth. They chase each other around the house and are respectful of each others boundries, they actually lay curled up next to each other on the back of the couch waiting to sing to the mailman when he walks across the grass.

NBS was a fantastic rescue to work with from start to finish. I highly recommend them to anyone interested in adopting a new family member. There is No Bull Sh*%. They tell you upfront if the dog has any special needs or issues so you are well aware before any time is wasted. Suzy has a few more good years in her but when it's her time NBS will be the first rescue I go to when I have an empty spot in my heart and bed needing to be filled. Tilly would need another partner in crime... can't have Thelma without Louise.

Thank you again NBS Rescue you exceeded my expectations!

My adult son adopted a dog from NBS several years ago. NBS was very thorough and organized in their adoption process, ensuring that Fia found a great home and Ethan adopted a healthy, vetted, socialized dog. Wonderful experience all around. I also have the pleasure of knowing other NBS alum adopted dogs living great lives with their new families in Ann Arbor. I would highly recommend NBS to future adopters.

My adult son adopted a small dog from NBS (Fia). The adoption process was thorough and supportive to ensure that he was a great home for little Fia, and that Fia was a good match for his household. A very positive experience all around, and Fia is doing great. I would (and do) definitely recommend NBS Rescue to prospective adopters.

I love nbs and their fosters! They are the most dedicated and hands on rescue I have ever come across and I work at an animal clinic. We adopted our Elsie from them back in September and are so thankful for this group! Elsie has brought so much joy into our lives after losing a pet. They really do go above and beyond for every little animal they rescue. It's amazing!

NBS is the best! Their policy of letting folks apply for adoption even before they have a dog in mind to adopt is so efficient.
After that, you watch their website for when your little dream critter becomes available.
We were looking for a pug and got a great one!
They also take care to make sure home & dog match--but w/o the sense of intimidation
that other rescue centers sometimes generate.
On adoption day, Rosie arrived with a notebook packed with care info, medical records, and tips from her foster family.
NBS is a very professional and very caring rescue group.

I left another rescue to dedicate my volunteering efforts 100% for NBS. Not only do they excell in rescue and placement, but they are always at the forefront for saving those dogs most needing help. No medical ailment too large, no disorder too big a challenge. No pup too old to begin a new life in a loving new home. I am so very proud to be a part of NBS. To those looking to adopt, be assured that great effort is expended in placing the best fit not only for your family but for the new life coming to join you. Sometimes the process from falling in love to that first home visit seems long - but it's worth it.

I came to know NBS Animal Rescue though my adoption of a dog I saw on Petfinder. Love at first sight. In my inexperience with legit rescues, I expected to be able to take my dog home with me upon our initial meeting and was disappointed that I could not have her until a background check and home visit was approved. This is what GOOD and CARING rescues do. They care so much about their fosters, they will not allow an adoption to go through without knowing that the dog will be placed in a home they can be assured will be the best fit for the dog. Now that I understand, though I still share that initial disappointment on first meetings that can't end in an instant new family, I am proud to not only support NBS, but have joined them as a foster parent. There is no higher standard than that of this group. I am blessed to have "discovered" them, and anyone adopting a pet should be assured that an adoption through NBS comes with all the love and support you'd ever need - beyond that of your new four legged love . . .

We adopted 2 dogs from NBS and now can't imagine our lives without them. The house is noticeably quiet when they aren't around. NBS was wonderful to work with and found the perfect match for us .... x 2!! Both pups came to us healthy, groomed and ready to join our families. They could tell us about their personalities, what they liked and disliked which made their transition easier. Highly recommend NBS. We will keep using them in the future!

We adopted Lisa about one year ago. She had been dropped on the street a long with many brothers and sisters. She was in terrible shape when she was found and was given excellent care by an NBS foster Mom for three months. We got her when she was 9 months old. She was in excellent health then and is the sweetest little girl. NBS does thorough check on all adopters making sure the forever home is just right. They are truly fantastic.

My husband Brian and I had no thoughts of ever getting another pet. We are both retired and made our move from Michigan to South Carolina in 2013.
Our oldest daughter still lived in Michigan but was getting ready to put her house on the market after Christmas. So we made a trip last year in early December to help get the house in order. My daughter Laura had been volunteering with NBS for a few years. She had adopted a 5 pound male poodle through NBS a couple of years ago. NBS had asked Laura to foster a recent rescue. She was a mixed female dog who had recently given birth to a litter of pups. When Animal Control found her she had been wondering the streets in Macomb County. NBS had named her Sierra. When I first laid eyes on her she was so thin. But she felt safe at my daughter's home and adapted well with her two dogs Madison and Charlie. I was very protective of her. And went so far as to rename her Willow. I remember handing her over to one of the volunteers the day if her spading. I even told that person she looked like a Willow. She had 2 surgeries while she lived with my daughter and did well with both of them. So much for one little dog to undergo.
We returned to South Carolina before Christmas. But I couldn't stop thinking about this small white bundle of fur. I loved her even then. I probably fell in love with her the first time I laid eyes on her. So within a few weeks she had recovered from both surgeries and was ready for adoption. I put in an application to NBS. They had a very extensive form with a number of very specific questions regarding layout of the home, ways in which I might handle bad behavior, potty training, and outdoor activity. We also provided 3 references that were not relatives. A few days later my husband and I had been approved for Sierra.
We received her on my birthday-February 15th. Today we celebrated her 2nd year birthday. We fill blessed to have this small bundle of joy. Willow has adapted beautifully to her new home and especially this hot weather. We are extremely grateful to NBS for their dedication in helping animals who have been abused or abandoned.
Thank you for this opportunity to tell my story.

NBS Animal Rescue is such a professional and caring rescue. I have been fostering dogs for NBS approximately a year when they posted a little girl, Gidget, who needed a foster while waiting for her furever home. I immediately wanted to foster Gidget and once she was in my home I knew she was not ever going to leave - huge foster fail! LOVE my Gidget!
I am honored to be associated with NBS by fostering and helping these pups gain confidence, learn to trust and find the best homes!

When we adopted our dog, Nikki, we were impressed by the professional and thorough way they handled her placement. They made sure that we were the best family for a little dog with a sad history. NBS has stayed in touch, answered our questions, and they host a wonderful reunion picnic. We are lucky we found such a great rescue group...and Nikki!

Our experience with NBS Animal Rescue was excellent. We adopted our dog Nikki from them and they made certain that we were a good match -- and we were! Nikki is the perfect dog for our family. She is a very small chihuahua and gets along great with our dog Riley. NBS was here for a meet and greet between the two dogs to make sure they would bet along and be good companions for each other. NBS was very helpful with transition tips as Nikki settled in to our home. NBS is a great organization run by kind, caring, and well-organized staff.
