Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society

When I was a young 2nd class petty officer with a wife and a baby I was stationed on the USS Enterprise. We had just moved to Noforlk, VA for the refueling of the Enterprise. We found a house for rent for a reasonable price but it did not have a refrigerator. since we had a baby we absolutely needed a refrigerator right away. Since I did not have the cash to buy one I decided to go to the Navy Relief Society to request a loan. The person I talked to declined to offer a loan to me even though I told him that I had a baby and needed one right away. He again declined to offer a loan to me so I had to borrow the money from a friend (embarassing). I subsequently retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant after 25 years and have never forgotten how the Navy Relief Society treated my family and me. Every year I receive a letter from the Navy Relief asking for donations. To this day I have never made a donation to them and I never will.

I have been volunteering for NMCRS for five years now and have loved every minute of it. The other volunteers who work here tirelessly give their time and efforts to help sailors in need and I have built a family working alongside them in every station we have been a part of. It's a wonderful charity!

When a Marine or Sailor is in need of some extra attention and a safe person who can check up on them and either get them a link to care or advocate for them with their command the NMCRS Visiting Nurses, Combat Casualty Nurses are there. They travel all over the US to check up on our active duty or veteran service men and women. They do not judge, they CARE. These wonderful ladies have saved so many lives. They are a direcct link to commands and make sure those in financial need are directed to those can can give a hand up not a hand out. The nurses have been a lifesaving force and instrumental in making sure medical needs are provided no matter what status our Marines and Sailors are in. You want them on your team....

NMCRS is a great resource for emergency financial help for marines and sailors. They rely heavily on volunteers to provide all services. Where else can you get an interest free loan when you truly need it? This organization is a gem amount non- profits. They also have financial planning classes for new parents and the class participants receive a free bag of baby items that include a handmade baby blanket made by a volunteer, maybe the blanket I crocheted!

NMCRS is an organization that is amazing! Not only is it a financial resource for countless Marunes and Sailors, but it also has a Visiting Nurse program that is incredible. This small group of highly skilled and dedicated individuals provides care to Marines, Sailors, and their families all over the world. The 15 Combat Casualty Assistance Visiting nurses cover the entire United States, providing a resource that is literally unmatched by any other military service or organization. This organization quietly carries out it's mission, with volunteers at the core of all of our activities.

NMCRS assists Sailors, Marines, families and retirees with emergency loans or grants. All donations that are given to NMCRS are used to assist these people in emergency needs via loans or grants. Nothing that is donated goes to upkeep or salaries. How many other charities and non profits can say that? This money would be used for things such as car repairs, emergency trips home, and living expenses and much more all due to unforeseen happenings that may arise with little notice.
NMCRS not only gives financial assistance but the Society is here to also offer solutions that the veteran or service member can take with them.
The Society is here when a service member is in need, and it takes courage to ask for help-courage that the Sailor or Marine already has but now it is for themselves, not America. i am proud as a spouse of a retired Navy Service Member and as a volunteer to be assicated with this worthwile cause.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society helps Sailors and Marines assist each other. With small donations from active duty members, retirees and the general public, they are able to provide approximately $4.00 in assistance for each $1.00 donated. How? By providing interest-free loans and some grants to service members to meet basic needs. These loans are then repaid, making those funds available for others in need. NMCRS is the finest example I know of Sailors and Marines taking care of each other. It is truly a superb organization!

The STAP interest free loan is the best! My spouse and I are stationed overseas and I take advantage of this loan. It is interest free money that is payed back though automatic deduction from my spouse's pay - I don't have to think about it or worry about it. The application process is painless and easy. As a Navy spouse for the past 14 years, it's programs like this that help us navigate through the Navy life and stay on track with our education. Thank you NMCRS!

Not sure how to rate myself, I was an employee, volunteer and navy wife for 27 years, I witnessed the good that this organization did for fellow naval and marine corps people, and also for the widows of past members of the USN and USMC. A fantastic organization that has the best interest of the people always first and foremost in their mission and pledge.

For 25 years I witnessed the highest level of commitment from both staff and volunteers, in local offices as well as NMCRS Headquarters, whether with direct client services or behind the scenes. This organization is dedicated to looking at long term solutions in addition to providing immediate emergency relief. Through identification of underlying financial issues and providing education the society encourages clients to take ownership of their financial future. Grants are available for those who need them, yet the majority of assistance is provided in the form of interest free loans which allows the society to reuse their donated dollars. Compassion is the cornerstone of this non-profit as they offer more than just a handout. I wish such well rounded programs were available for all communities.

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society is the last hope for those serving our country. If a sailor or Marine is having a rough time they can turn to the society for food &/or financial assistance. Our military doesn't pay well & most of the people are already on food stamps, so its very easy to fall on hard times. In the late 90's my hubby was USMC, deployed overseas, I totaled our only vehicle while pregnant, I couldn't work for the rest of my pregnancy. I don't know what we woldve done without the Society.

I'm the Chair of Publicity with the Port Hueneme/Ventura office, and I've been volunteering with NMCRS since October 2011. I also donate to the fund drive. NMCRS helps so many people and provides such great services. Please vote for us!

I supported the NMCRS with every paycheck I received for 26 years while in the Navy - and I continue to donate monthly from my retired pay. I know the Society helped many of my shipmates when they needed money to bury their still-born babies, get home to the bedside of a mother or father, put food on the table or buy diapers when the wife got cancer and could no longer work, or when their car was crushed by a tree during a hurricane. This charity makes a difference.

For over 20 years I volunteered with NMCRS all over the US and Europe. There is no better source for financial assistance available to military families than this program. We not only provided millions of dollars (over my 20+ years) as grants or interest free loans to service members in true need, we provided classes on budgeting, budgeting for baby and "Junior Seabags" for newborns (amazing gift bags full of good and useful items including a hand knitted baby afghan). Early on, NMCRS had actual food lockers which were provided without repay requirements, thrift stores with clothing, etc I personally saw thousands of dollars in grants over a seven day period following the Beirut Barracks Bombing in 1983. I cannot address the financials of those paid individuals in NMCRS but I can tell you that no one who truly came to us with a financial need was ever turned away. If they could repay the money, it was an interest free loan, if they couldn't it was an outright grant. There never was any pressure to avoid giving money out, in fact the opposite, we were told that we were to be the service members first resource, not their last resort. If you are wondering what benefits the volunteers receive, besides mileage we were provided coffee, tea and snack items while working.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provided financial assistance of $50 million to nearly 100,000 active and retired Sailors and Mrines in 2010. Founded in 1904, this non-profit organization has directly served over 4 million servicemembers with over $1.1 Billion is assistance over the years. Nearly 90 percent of this organization's financial assistance is provided to junir enlisted personnel and their families: this assitance helps cover emergent financial situations requiring money for basic living expenses, emergency travel and transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and educational expenses.
