Mission: The naval historical foundation (nhf) has served people interested in the history of the u. S. Navy's contributions to america's maritime history and heritage since march of 1926. Our mission is to preserve and honor the legacy of those who came before us, and educate and inspire the generations that follow. Nhf increases awareness through: youth and award programs; forums, symposiums, and heritage events; and deep-sea exploration of the maritime domain, bringing naval history and scientific discovery to life.
Programs: Ancillary activities - nhf hosts occasional small maritime events, such as the unveiling of new model airplanes at the cold war gallery. Nhf also arranges for recognition of significant historical artifact donations, including a japanese geisha doll and founding documents of the civil engineering corps. Nhf operates a gift shop at the national museum of the united states navy to support the visitor experience.
programs - nhf's programs focus on making organizational resources better known and more widely available. Nhf maintains the navyhistory. Org website and supports other maritime websites in support of naval history museums. Nhf also hosts signature events throughout the year to build awareness of naval history heritage programs. Recent events included a reception to welcome aboard the new secretary of the navy and a formal black-tie dinner - an official five-star mess night. Nhf secured a department of the interior grant to digitize the first 13 volumes of naval documents from the american revolution.
core services - nhf supports the naval history and heritage command through a range of activities, but primarily through the foundation's support of the national museum of the united states navy and the cold war gallery museum annex. Nhf encourages naval and maritime scholarship by awarding prizes and fellowships to students and teachers. Specific awards include: the knox award for lifetime achievement in naval scholarship; the superintendent's annual leadership and vision award, for u. S. Naval academy midshipmen who demonstrate significant leadership and writing skills in understanding naval history; the beach award for midshipman who demonstrated excellence in naval scholarship; the coskey prizes awarded to high school students at national history day; and the teacher of distinction awards given to teachers across the united states. Annually, nhf supports multiple historical symposia. Recent topics have included the cia's assessment of the soviet navy during the cold war and legacy of five-star fleet admiral leadership. Nhf core services also include social media outreach through linkedin, facebook, twitter, instagram, and other outlets that have created wider awareness of the mission of the naval historical foundation.
