Programs: NATIVE PRAIRIES ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS (NPAT) is a nonprofit 501(c)3, membership organization and an accredited land trust. Our mission is dedicated to the conservation, restoration, and appreciation of native prairies, savannas, and other grasslands in Texas. NPAT was founded in 1986 by a group of Texans concerned about our disappearing prairie heritage, especially the endangered tallgrass prairies.
WE PROTECT PRAIRIES through acquisition, partnerships, and conservation easements. NPAT has conserved more than 5,200 acres of native Texas prairie, including 1,340 acres of endangered tallgrass prairie. NPAT-owned properties include Dowell Ranch in Manchaca, Maddin Prairie Preserve near Colorado City, Lawther-Deer Park Prairie in Deer Park, Mary Talbot Prairie and the Talbot Brothers Preserve near New Boston, Riesel Prairie near Marlin, the Elder Prairie near Brenham, and Paul Mathews Prairie near Greenville.
WE RESTORE NATIVE PRAIRIE on our own lands, work with our landowners to restore their lands, and promote restoration on other lands to benefit the native plant communities, pollinators, grassland birds and other prairie wildlife of Texas. We share informational resources and advice on restoration. Our conservation easement landowners at Daphne Prairie near Mount Vernon, the Kirchoff Family Farm near Floresville and the Ebel Ranch in Sulphur Bluff host regular restoration and educational events.
WE TEACH THE PRAIRIE and its value through our chapter efforts, workshops, presentations, field trips and volunteer opportunities. The Lawther-Deer Park Prairie Education program and its director Della Barbato work with Houston area students, teachers and others to expand understanding of coastal prairies. NPAT has five chapters in the Houston, Fayette Prairie, Fort Worth, Dallas. and San Antonio areas.
