Causes: Chambers of Commerce & Business Leagues
Mission: Development and promotion of storm shelter standards for protecting against loss of life resulting from tornadoes, hurricanes, and other weather related disasters.
Programs: Promote the production, manufacture, and installation of high quality storm shelters meeting the association's storm shelter performance standards, as well as the requirements of federal, state, and local regulations.
administer testing and evaluation programs for the purpose of issuing labels to qualified storm shelter producers, to verify certification of compliance with the association's storm shelter performance standards.
development of joint strategies and collaboration with model codes and standards groups and committees, for the purpose of developing a nationally recognized and adopted consensus standard for the storm sheleter industry. A national consensus standard was approved during 2008 and the standard was revised in 2014. The new standard is called the icc 500 which stands for international code council/national storm shelter association standard for design and construction of storm shelters.
provide educational programs emphasizing the need for storm shelters and considerations critical to their quality and reliability.
