Mission: Originally considered a rare disease, the first treatment for rosacea was approved in late 1988 as an orphan drug by the FDA in the belief that fewer than 200,000 Americans suffered from it. It soon became evident that rosacea affected the lives of an estimated 14 million Americans who had failed to realize they had a medical condition that could be treated.The National Rosacea Society was formed in 1992 to raise awareness, provide health information and to support medical research that may lead to improvement in the management, prevention and potential cure for rosacea.
Programs: Public Awareness: The NRS conducts national communications activities throughout the year that reach more than 400 million people annually. It also maintains a comprehensive Web site and toll-free telephone number. Public Education: The NRS information and educational materials serve more than 800,000 people annually, including a quarterly newsletter and a range of booklets to help understand and manage the disorder. Medical Scientific Education: The NRS conducts consensus conferences of medical experts to develop standardized criteria for the disease to serve as international standards for unifying research, improving diagnosis and providing common terminology for communications. It also produces medical education materials, and conducts a rosacea research workshop annually. Research Grants: The NRS administers a research grants program to support medical research relating to potential causes and other aspects of rosacea. Its medical advisory board reviews grant applications and selects studies for funding.
