The National Museum of Mexican Art, http://nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org/ was originally founded, in 1982, by Carlos Tortolero and Helen Valdez, as the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum.
In 2006 the name was changed to reflect the status of the museum as the only member of the American Alliance of Museums dedicated to Latino culture.
Located in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, the current building in Harrison Park opened on March 27, 1987. The museum is the only Latino museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
The mission of the museum is to display Mexican culture as one sin fronteras. The museum describes itself as the largest Latino cultural institution in America.
My late wife, Juanita and I, were one of the first to advocate for the museum and we were part of the 1982 founding of the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago http://www.mexfoldanco.org
Thus NMMA and MFDC have had a close relationship with each other and collaborated several times on community projects. MFDC is also listed on the Great Nonprofits site.
