Mission: The functions of the national lieutenant governors association shall be to provide a medium for the exchange of views and experiences on subjects of general importance to the people of the several states and territories; to foster interstate cooperation; to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of the office of lieutenant governor; and generally to improve the efficiency of state and territorial administration, education on issues, and leadership training.
Programs: Nlga conducts a state federal meeting annually in washington, dc, in march. Participants meet with members of congress and the administration to enhance intergovernmental relations. Topics focus on federal work which will affect the states. The annual meeting is hosted each summer by a nlga member. It is an opportunity for the member to showcase their states' resources and unique assets. The annual meeting is a forum to bring nlga members together to discuss the challenges and policy issues that impact state government. The meeting averages an impact of more than $360,000 to the state which hosts (2007). A fall meeting is held in november for the executive committee and newly elected members. The meeting focus is association business and professional training.
public health - nlga continues its long standing commitment to public health through the continuation of the your heart is in your hands nutrition and fitness online program and the ending cervical cancer in our lifetime program. Presentations on these issues were completed for members at various nlga meetings this year and materials were produced on demand for various state constituencies. The your heart your hands program was successfully expanded to group entire and several schools are currently being administered though the program.
webinars - nlga launched its first webinars this year. The accomplishments included researching, testing, selecting, installing and operating the technical aspects of webinars. The three completed webinars were both topical in nature and used for member meetings. Each webinar was led by nlga officer and included lieutenant governors, their staff and private partners. Members met at the beginning of the year to discuss what shared challenges would be faced in the 2012 legislative sessions.
