Mission: The mission of the national liberty ship memorial is to preserve, for present and future generations, the story of the us merchant marines, patriotic and brave men and women who built, sailed and defended the 2,751 american-built world war ii ships known as "liberties. " the memorial has restored and will continue to preserve and maintain one of the last two operating liberty ships, the ss jeremiah o'brien, as a living museum.
Programs: The organization is a maritime living museum conducting ship tours of the ss jeremiah while docked alongside pier 45 on the embarcadero in san francisco. The tours and cruises are designed to promote and provide public awareness and appreciation of liberty ships and of the united states merchant marines. A primary focus of the tours is the education of young people about wwwii and the liberty ships through special tours for school groups and overnights. There is also an active internship program for high school students.
