This is a wonderful organization supporting patients with kidney disease and their family members. Many patients depend on the financial support provided by this organization. In addition, with the screening program of at risk population, this organization helps increase awareness of kidney disease.

The NKF/MD provides assistance to those dealing with kidney disease throughout Maryland and southern Delaware. The staff and volunteers of this organization are focused on doing what is best for its' constituency. The vast majority of the monies raised stays in this area and is used to support patients and provide funding for research at local academic medical centers, primarily Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland Medical Center. The staff and board members are responsible stewards of the funds raised and work hard to ensure those funds are used in the most effective ways possible.

The NKF has been an incredible resource for patients and provider settings, by allowing provider organizations to connect with the greater community. The NKF has been a partner in expanding a provider's reach and impact. I am grateful to consider them a partner in improving the quality of life and health of renal patients!

The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland inspires me to give because the work that this organization does makes a huge difference in the lives of patients with kidney disease. Kidney disease impacts 73 million American adults (1 in 3) are at risk for developing kidney disease.

The data is alarming, kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the U.S. and kills more people every year than
breast or prostate cancer.

• 26 million Americans (1 in 9) live with chronic kidney disease—and most don’t know it.
• Approximately 427,000 Americans are on dialysis, with treatment for the average patient costs
$70,000 per year.
• Nearly 3,000 new patients are added to the kidney waiting list each month.
• An individual donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation.

I am inspired because the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland is building awareness, driving prevention
and supporting treatment of kidney disease.

I know that my donation is helping to move the mission forward by:
• Raising Awareness — NKF-MD screens over 1,000 people annually for kidney disease through their KEY
screenings and Kidney Health Risk Assessment programs.
• Offers Prevention — NKF-MD provides an average of $200,000 annually in emergency assistance and
transportation funds and helps more than 1,000 patients and their families meet basic, urgent life needs.
• Helps Treatment — NKF-MD funds over $200,000 in research grants each year to local institutions and
offer support to patients, caregivers and organ donors with access to the NKF Cares Hotline.

I've seen first hand the impact that kidney disease has on people - kidney disease needs to be talked about more - early detection can change a life. It's important to me to be part of an organization that is making a difference in the lives of the people in the community where I live and work.

I am honored to share this story and nominate the National Kidney Foundation - every dollar received is doing something great for people!
