Mission: Preserve, present, and promote jug band music
Programs: Our biggest service accomplishment continues to be the production of our annual free music festival (jubilee). We provide 9 bands and a full day of music and history, while celebrating jug band music and it's historic ties to the louisville area.
we continued our mission of education by offering free jug band workshops for both adults, and a separate special workshop just for kids. The kids got to build their own washtub bass - or in this case "bucket" bass. The adults split into groups by instrument. We provided instructors and instruments and the groups included washboards, jugs, vocals, washtub bass, and the saw! After playing and learning in their respective groups, all of the groups - including the kids - got together on the stage and played together. Our purpose with this workshop is to show how accessible jug band music can be, with the ultimate goal being to keep this unique form of americana music going. We feel that including children is absolutely vital in this mission. Our yearly workshop proves to be one of the most popular aspects of our annual jubilee.
at this year's jubilee we inducted the first group of "winners" into the hall of fame and they were each presented with a bamboo plaque recognizing their achievements in jug band music. The 2010 inductees were cannon's jug stompers, memphis jug band, jim kweskin and the jug band, arlo leach and the minneapolis battle of the jug bands. The plaque for the memphis jug band will be displayed at the center for southern folklore in memphis, tn. A web site was created (www. Jughall. Org) for the jug band hall of fame for nominations and voting. This website is also a resource for biographical material on our nominees.
