Mission: Founded in 1975, The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) serves as a major advocate in Washington, DC for nearly 25 million Italian Americans, raising the prominence of all things Italian in American culture and society, and making Italian American part of the national conversation. NIAF is dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage and culture of Americans of Italian descent, the nation's fifth largest ethnic group. NIAF: provides educational and scholarship opportunities; promotes the history, heritage and accomplishments of Italian Americans; serves as a liaison between the Italian American community and the government; ensures a realistic portrayal of Italian Americans in the media; serves as a liaison between Italy and the United States; and serves as a clearinghouse of information on Italy and on Americans of Italian descent
Programs: Scholarships/ grants: approximately $ 1 million was awarded for grants, scholarships and other education programs. Scholarships were presented to students at the college and graduate levels. Grants were awarded for such categories as general undergraduate, women's studies, italian language, communications, etc.
gala dinner: an annual event that honors distinguished italian american men and women who have made substantial contributions to their professions in such fields as education, humanitarianism, business, entertainment, science, and sports. Proceeds from the dinner support niaf's cultural, scholarship, and educational programs.
public relations: include activities designed to inform our members and non-members about our italian american community and events. Our two publications, niaf news and ambassador magazine, keeps our membership informed while our web-page, www. Niaf. Org, is available for anyone who wishes to explore their heritage.
public outreach: includes seminars, conferences, and news information projects designed to acquaint the general public with the italian community as represented by niaf. Also, the niaf continues efforts in the cooperation with the embassy of italy in assisting italian americans interested in obtaining italian citizenship. Niaf launched an online survey questionnaire to determine eligibility requirements for use by the embassy in processing potential applications. Member services: tiered membership program offering various opportunities for each level of membership. Membership support has allowed niaf to expand its many youth programs, scholarship offerings and grant awards to thousands of deserving italian americans throughout the country.
