NIBS is a vital partner and trusted advisor in advancing the building program capabilities of the Federal Agencies. Working with NIBS has given us foundational tools for digital transformation and provided access to lessons learned from a variety of peer groups across government, industry, academia, and the global BIM user community. This partnership has allowed us to get further faster towards our goals of using BIM and digital transformation to optimize how we plan, design, build, and operate our facilities to be good stewards of American tax dollars.

I have been working with the National Institute of Building Sciences for a number of years on our organizations' shared goal of addressing the complex challenges facing the built environment. We have collaborated on several joint roundtables on areas of immense importance to the public such as resilience and sustainability, infrastructure development, and social equity. NIBS' unique ability to bring together stakeholders from across the built environment is critical, as a traditionally fragmented industry attempts to meet these challenges.

In recent years, I have been privileged to participate in their Consultative Council where leaders across the construction industry are able to share best practice, exchange innovative ideas, and drive practical solutions. I look forward to NIBS continued efforts in helping foster a more resilient, sustainable, and innovative built environment.

As an organizational member, we partnered with NIBS for this year’s Women Executives in Building Symposium and Building Innovation conferences. These events, as well as the ongoing council meetings, provide a platform for industry experts to contribute in meaningful ways to improve the built environment. We are honored to be associated with the National Institute of Building Sciences and look forward to contributing to the positive outcome of smart and healthy buildings!

As a member of the Multi-Hazard Mitigation Council and chair of the Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate, I have seen firsthand the value of NIBS. From convening experts to providing public reports on contemporary issues, NIBS is a leader in building sciences knowledge sharing and analysis.

In particular, NIBS has positioned itself as a leader in the field of disaster resilience. As a former FEMA leader who oversaw the agency's resilience programs, I can say that NIBS' contributions to disaster resilience have been extraordinary. This includes its landmark Mitigation Saves reports and innovative studies such as Resilience Incentivization Roadmap 2.0. NIBS is solidly at the forefront of disaster resilience science and thought leadership.

I volunteer my time with NIBS because I believe in its mission and wish to offer my support of its efforts.

My father was a founding member of NIBS in 1978, served on the Consultative Council Executive Committee from 1978-1981, and served on the NIBS board for two terms from 1981-1987 and 2005-2011. In addition, he was the inaugural recipient of the Mortimer M. Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award, an annual NIBS award which was named in his honor. Due in part to that connection, I have been involved with NIBS in one way or another for over 45 years. Even before I attended my first NIBS event as an architecture student at Howard University, I learned from my father about the positive impact that NIBS was making to improve the built environment. After I graduated from college and became a licensed architect I remained active in NIBS and had the privilege of serving on the NIBS board for two consecutive terms.

In addition to it’s work to improve the built environment through legislation and the development of standards, NIBS regularly brings together leaders in architecture, engineering, construction, and code to discuss problems and opportunities in the industry. NIBS is not only focused on supporting current industry professionals but is also dedicated to supporting the next generation of design and construction professionals.

When my family established the Betty and Mort Marshall Memorial Scholarship in 2019 to encourage diversity in the building sciences and support students studying architecture and engineering at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, I knew that NIBS would be the perfect partner in the endeavor. Since the scholarship was founded in 2019, two $5,000 scholarships have been awarded annually to one engineering and one architecture student. The NIBS board has been an active participant in the process, serving as the scholarship selection committee, sponsoring the annual engineering scholarships, and enabling both scholarship recipients to attend the NIBS Building Innovation Conference.

Thank you NIBS for your leadership, knowledge, educational opportunities, partnership, and commitment to the next generation of design and construction professionals.

I started working with NIBS through the BIM council. As I got to know the organization, I realized NIBS is a very unique entity. There are many organizations in the Built environment but only NIBS was charted by the US Senate and sends an annual report to the President. NIBS covers so much more than BIM such as hazard mitigation, facility management, women in the Built environment, workforce development and much more. Science governs so many industries such as aviation, transportation etc. and the Built environment certainly can benefit from a more scientific approach.
I was honored to be selected to join the Board of Directors of NIBS two years ago. This year I am excited to serve as an Officer on the Board.

The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) acts as a think tank for the AEC and building industry. As a CEO in this industry, it's among the only places to gather and meet with leaders from all trades and disciplines to coordinate on the issues that most inspire and threaten the built environment. We are extremely fortunate at the foresight of Congress to have created this institution that continues to be so relevant to the needs of those advancing and evolving the buildings that protect, shelter, and enhance our lives.

As an active construction code professional for the past 25 years, I find NIBS uniquely positioned to provide the built environment an invaluable resource. The work performed provides unseen benefits to across the country. NIBS has a Congressional charge to be the authoritative national voice to make findings and to advise both the public and private sectors of the economy with respect to the use of building science and technology in achieving nationally acceptable standards. An innovative voice to improve our living environment. What an honor it is to serve and to be a part of a group of individuals who selfishly work to improve codes and standards to ensure a better tomorrow. In my personal experience with NIBS, I have witnessed the desire to infuse technical findings in a practical and strategic way to improve national standards and to share such findings across the public and private sectors. NIBS serves the public interest, improves the built environment by advancing building science through collaboration with a multitude of public and private stakeholders.

Just as the construction sector has a massive footprint in the American economy, NIBS has a similar footprint in the AEC industry. NIBS' ability to convene not only multiple disciplines, but also a wide range of nonprofit associations representing various sectors of the industry is admirable and much needed. As each organization involved in NIBS works towards our individual goals, we also embrace the opportunity to work collaboratively under the guidance of NIBS for the overall good of the industry. NIBS ability to serve as consensus-builder is extremely valuable to the industry and our nation.

NIBS is the most comprehensive organization for the built environment, and I have experienced amazing events that have pushed the industry forward in very meaningful and actionable ways. The depth of the experience and the reach of the community that envelopes the entire eco system for this industry is unmatched. I care deeply about the construction industry, and I encourage anyone who is looking for knowledge and innovation that motivates, while understating risks in the business (in a very practical way), then this is a great organization to become a member of.

In a fragmented industry, NIBS is uniquely structured to bring together the diversity of leaders from across the built environment to tackle new, ubiquitous challenges. This includes resilience, use of convergent technologies, and much more. All viewpoints are heard including the owners, designers, builders, supply chain, facility managers, regulators, and educators. These diverse viewpoints inform solutions that become industry next practices that will someday become industry best practices. NIBS is THE place to be for those that are future-forward and want to build a powerful network.
