Mission: IEC is a community-based alliance of business, labor and education. IEC's collaborative partnerships allow the organization to address workforce preparation and skills upgrade in systemic and holistic ways that include such strategies as: occupational profiling, worker assessment/testing, educator professional development, workplace mentoring, facilitating industry labor market studies and brokering the involvement of industry in the development of curriculum and training that is aligned with business needs.
Programs: While IEC works across several broad industry sectors, IEC began specializing in work with the Machine Technology industry in 1998 for three reasons: to create a framework in which workers with minimal skills can access high-quality and affordable training; the lack of a skilled workforce; and to strengthen the manufacturing base of the region, which is critical to the regional, state, and national economy. Manufacturing remains the backbone of many of the San Francisco Bay Area's more high profile industries, such as electronics, information technology and telecommunications. A local and skilled machine technology sector is essential to the manufacturing industry because most manufacturers have a need for high-precision machine components quickly to remain globally competitive. IEC works with local employers and community college districts to target low-skill, low-wage incumbent workers and new hires in enhancing both their foundation/basic and technical skills leading to upgraded skills and increased earning power.
