Mission: The National Indian Youth Council (NIYC) was founded in 1961 and has worked diligently since then to ensure that Native Americans in New Mexico have equitable access to workforce development services and educational advancement opportunities. The organization manages a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Indian and Native American Programs (Section 166 of the WIOA). We serve one of the largest urban Native American populations in the nation with a mission to empower Indigenous People to exercise self-determination and self-sufficiency for community wellbeing.
Results: The workforce services and community outreach delivered by NIYC has resulted in significant contributions to the southwest regional employment market with direct impact on the local and statewide un-and-under-employment rates, the higher educational achievement and educational retention rates, and the number of Native American families in New Mexico that rely on public assistance programs.
