Mission: The national housing conference educates decision makers and the public about housing policies and practices that create and support thriving communities with quality homes that are affordable and accessible to all. We convene and collaborate with our diverse membership and the broader housing and community development sectors to advance our policy, research and communications initiatives that effect positive change at the federal, state and local levels.
Programs: Policy development: nhc works with a broad coalition of housing stakeholders and advocates around myriad housing issues at the federal, state and local level. In 2017 nhc held the solutions for affordable housing convening in washington, dc, which drew 233 participants. Nhc's monthly restoring neighborhoods task force lifts up research, policy changes and best practices for comprehensive community development. Nhc also hosted a monthly inclusive communities peer learning group focused on helping localities become more inclusive using best practices in housing policy. Nhc convenes working groups around restoring neighborhoods, veteran's housing access, green affordable housing, housing finance reform, and broadband connectivity. Nhc continues to educate around the federal budget with our annual budget forum, which drew over 275 registrants. Our annual policy symposium in june drew more than 400 attendees in person and online and was broadcast on c-span. Us hud secretary ben carson provided the key note.
raising national awareness: nhc strives to build national awareness of the importance of affordable housing and how it relates to health, educational outcomes, and economic vitality of our communities. We aim to broaden the constituency base of those involved in affordable housing. Nhc works to build capacity at the state and local level where housing practitioners, community organizations, researchers and program managers come together to discuss housing issues and opportunities. Nhc hosted its solutions for housing communications convening in minneapolis, mn with 125 attendees. Nhc publishes the washington wire, a weekly policy bulletin, and under one roof, a monthly member newsletter, reaching over 1500 subscribers. We also work to develop housing professionals through young leaders in affordable housing.
research: nhc's research division produces reports on the housing affordability challenges of working families and intersections between housing and other social policy issues. In 2017 nhc published three research publications and hosted four webinars. Nhc's hallmark paycheck to paycheck study focused on the affordability challenges faced by healthcare workers, highlights five fast growing healthcare occupations: dental assistant, emergency medical technician, home health aide, licensed practical nurse and physical therapy aide. Nhc also hosted a housing and health working group bringing together experts from around the country during the year to talk about ways in which housing can provide stronger health outcomes and successful models. These products combined with nhc's online tools and research staff speaking at public events, nhc showcases proven and promising solutions to the housing challenges facing american households and communities.
