Causes: Education, Student Services
Mission: College advising corps works to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college, and under-represented high school students who enter and complete higher education. To deliver on this mission, we place well-trained, recent college graduates, from partner institutions of higher education, as full-time college advisers in the nation's underserved high schools.
Programs: College advising corps works to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college, and under-represented high school students who enter and complete higher education. College advising corps partners with 25 colleges and universities in 15 states to place 600 well-trained recent graduates as full-time near-peer college advisers in the nation's most under-served high schools. Advisers provide the support that high school students need to navigate the complex processes of accessing college admission, securing financial aid, and enrolling in schools that serve them well. Because advisers are close in age and background to the students they serve, they can connect with students in ways others often cannot. Most advisers are first generation college graduates, were pell eligible and/or identify as a person of color. Our model not only offers assistance to students, but also provides a service opportunity for recent college graduates. In the 2016-2017 academic year, college-advising corps operates two program strategies - the core, in-school model and an e-advising initiative - to serve over 187,500 students.
