Mission: Since its original founding by Columbia University's Schools of Law and Social Work in 1965, the Center has sought to improve the reach and impact of the nation's anti-poverty programs. Through legal representation, the Center safeguards important legal protections for the poor and obtains critical safeguards and monitoring systems to improve government performance and protect families from slipping through the cracks. Through training and technical assistance, the Center helps public interest lawyers, social service providers, and community-based advocates use legal advocacy tools to better serve their clients. The Center also supports grassroots action pressing for changes to the nation's safety net.
