This group is amazing. It’s well organized and compassionate about Brussels Griffons in need. We have volunteered for NBGR over the years and know their mission is true! We’ve adopted a number of the dogs we first agreed to foster. They carefully screen and are selective, matching dogs needs, personalities with the best home. It’s often not an easy task. They have a special program for senior and unadoptable dogs where they maintain the ongoing care in loving homes.
For some reason I can’t post a photo. Maybe I can add it later. We recently adopted again and are greatful to NBGR and will try to add the pictures in edit.

Having assisted this organization I know firsthand the hard work that goes into a breed rescue program. NBGR is comprised of a loving group of people who in varied degrees volunteer their time, their homes and their hearts into rescuing Brussels Griffons in a myriad of unfortunate circumstances. It is not an easy passion. Often times it involves tears and broken hearts. But for many it is a blessed event when griffs in need are matched with forever homes. Some dogs come in emotionally scarred. For those it takes time, patience, determination and love to gain their trust and NBGR is comprised of volunteers with that level of commitment. It sometimes comes about that the forever home is the foster family with whom a needy Brussels Griffon finds itself in. That is the case with our family. We love them all, though now they have all passed on and we are left with treasured memories.
We became a permanent foster family for several griffons that due to the circumstances they were in prior to NBGR, their ongoing care and maintenance was more demanding than many are willing to take on when looking for a beloved pet. NBGR is comprised of volunteers with this level of devotion, to love and care for a dog many would say is too difficult. What is more common though, the ones who become adoptable through the consistent love and care of a dedicated volunteer and those griffs without "issues". Fostering is not always easy but the rewards are in finding that perfect match.
Finding the perfect home is done with detailed screening to make certain each rescued dog is matched with the best possible forever home. That takes time but it is rewarded when that perfect match is achieved. NBGR Coordinators and Volunteers commit themselves to this process of getting to know the dogs and the prospective homes for placement. And sometimes in this process one makes "forever friends" as well as finding that perfect home for the dog.
Some examples of our experience with NBGR is as follows: Our first NBGR foster was Charlie. He was an owner surrender in 2004. We easily found him a happy forever home. He lived 18 years, 17 of those were with his forever home. We continued volunteering as a foster family, successfully until 2008 when WE became a forever home for Willow who had belonged to a "back yard breeder". I think it was 2012 when Fenris and Hurley came in from an outdoor puppy mill. They were permanent, very loved fosters that due to ongoing health and trust issues, stayed with us until we eventually adopted them both. In June of 2022 our home became void of living dogs when Evie, another beloved foster dog that came to us through NBGR, passed. Evie was about 14- 15 years old when she died. She had lived most of her years with us and was loved dearly by our family. We miss them immensly.
We not only volunteered with NBGR, we adopted pets from NBGR. While we are not able to provide the volunteer level of commitment we once did to NBGR, we still hold this charity in very high regard. It is an honorable group of people truly dedicated to the welfare and betterment of Brussels Griffons in untoward, and less than desirable circumstances. NBGR is a non profit organization that receives donations and uses those donations for better health, better care, better lives and loving homes for this breed's abandoned, abused, neglected, needy and precious owner surrenders. NBGR is worthy of any and all donations.
I have fostered for NBGR for almost 10 years and adopted for the time!
The volunteers are amazing and dedicated to the best homes for the BG’s in their care.
Here is my Ichabod, adopted 2024.
My partner and I sadly lost our little terrier mix a few months ago, but we're excited about the next chapter. After exploring different breeds, we fell in love with the idea of welcoming a Brussels Griffon into our family through a rescue. We've been working with Darlene, a wonderful volunteer from NBGR, who has been amazing in helping us find the perfect match. While a family emergency has slowed us down a bit, we're confident that the right dog will find us when the time is right. Darlene keeps us updated on every available dog, and we're absolutely thrilled at the thought of bringing one of these adorable little pups into our home!
I adopted these three furbabies (Sir Dudley, Prince Paris, and Lord Bailey) from the NBGR and each one of these babies touched my heart and made me a nicer human. All three were abused/neglected but the joy and respect I have for these babies to love and trust me is priceless and ALL three are etched in my heart/soul.
I have adopted 3 beautiful Griffs from NBGR. These folks sincerely care about the babies they rescue and place with loving families. They are always kind, responsive, and organized during the process and available post adoption for assistance if needed. The work they do, especially when they receive a large number of Griffs, is amazing. They have an extensive network of caring fosters and provide the necessary care to only adopt out healthy Griffs ready for a new home. I love and respect NBGR and recommend them without reservation if you are looking to adopt one of these adorable, special little babies.
The sweetest people to work with. It has been a rough year. I lost my husband and. I had two rescue dogs. One of my rescues has been blind since he was a puppy through a rescue. He was left blind and now is very hard of hearing. I had another rescue a Schnauzer that was our baby. She died this summer from cancer. I needed a love bug that accepted both of us. I had two Brussels and I was ready for another. This was my second thru NBGR. I am so blessed by my Maggie. She was the perfect girl for me. I wake up to love and kisses every morning. Thanks to NBGR for choosing me. She is perfect. The picture is going to get a pup cup. Everyone is starting to know her and she has won their hearts.
We just completed the adoption process for our 4th rescue through this wonderful nonprofit. Holly Pruitt (Adoption Coordinator) and her team have been fantastic to work with. The passion and love they have for this breed is incredible and we feel fortunate to have found NBGR. After we lost our original NGBR rescue (Linus) a couple of years ago, we started looking for another Griff. A real cutie showed up last December on the NBGR Instagram. NGBR does a phenomenal job of vetting potential new owners, and even though we had adopted through NGBR before, we went through the process to once again insure we had a household environment (house/yard/work/lifestyle) that would allow a Griff to thrive. We got the nod (whew!), drove 2 days to Austin, TX, and met Scooter. Scooter was being fostered by a young couple who, as it turns out, were also fostering Scooter’s sister (Sissy). We couldn’t separate siblings….so long story short, we brought BOTH back to Colorado. NGBR helped facilitate (and paid for) Sissy’s spay procedure as well as a thorough vet checkup, which they required prior to adoption. Fast forward just a few months and we got a call from Holly about a tiny stray Griff that had been picked up on a street near Denver and was being held in an Animal Shelter. Would we foster her? Sure! We picked up Tomato and soon discovered she had serious knee issues that required major surgery for 2 legs. NGBR paid for the surgery, and all vet appointments including visits with specialists for other concerns. Through all this we fell in love AGAIN and just completed Tomato’s adoption. No…3 is not a crowd! Thanks to everyone at NGBR, for everything they do – this is a GREAT nonprofit organization. Please support them!

We are so grateful to NBGR for bringing absolute love to our lives. We adopted our 1 st sweet girl when she was 3. She was part of our lives our bestie for 10 1/2 yrs before she crossed the rainbow bridge Last June we got a call from Darlene there was a little 11 yr old girl who lost her mom to cancer. Ruby moved in and claimed her place in our home. Two weeks ago 2 boys where surrendered by their owner. Darlene asked if i knew anyone who could take them we said yes. Us. The boys Fizzy 6 and Guiness 13 are wonderful boys They are 2 peas in our pod.
This rescue was EXTREMELY helpful in taking in a scared, timid Brussels we had gotten from an irresponsible breeder. We can't thank them enough for helping her thrive and giving her everything she needs to be happy. Highly recommend.
We adopted Maddie from NBGR which then lived with her foster family. Maddie was running in the streets and the local police picked her up in Emerald Isle NC. She was dropped off at the local shelter and because of her underbite and features NBGR got involved. We call her a wannabe Griff but she turned out to be an interesting mutt. Very impressed with this rescue. She came to us fully vetted and spayed and even groomed. I wish all rescues could experience such dedicated foster families and be an alumni of such a wonderful nonprofit organization.
In 2023 we had the wonderful opportunity to adopt the newest member of our family, Nash, through the exceptional nonprofit organization, NBGR (National Brussels Griffon Rescue). As a long-time follower of the group, we had been eagerly anticipating the perfect addition to the family, and thanks to NBGR, that dream became a reality.
From the moment I reached out to inquire about adoption, NBGR demonstrated unwavering dedication and professionalism. The process was seamless, and their commitment to finding the right match for both pet and owner was evident every step of the way.
What truly sets NBGR apart is their network of compassionate foster families. Nash's foster mom, in particular, was an absolute gem. Her love and care for Nash shone through, and I could rest assured knowing he had been nurtured and loved before joining my home.
Not only did NBGR facilitate Nash's adoption, but they also provided invaluable support and resources post-adoption. Their commitment to the well-being of the animals they rescue extends far beyond the initial placement, ensuring that both pets and their new families thrive.
I cannot recommend NBGR highly enough to anyone considering pet adoption. Their dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts make them a shining beacon in the world of animal rescue. Nash has brought immeasurable joy into my life, and I will forever be grateful to NBGR for making our beautiful bond possible.

Highly recommend! I have followed NBGR since a family member first adopted a Grif years ago. The attention and time they put into every dog is astounding. They spare no expense when it comes to veterinary care and makings sure the Grifs they work with are as happy and healthy as they can be. NBGR truly leads by example on how rescues should operate. The animal always comes first. NBGR and all of their extraordinary volunteers pour their time and effort into carefully vetting each home so that the dogs they foster and rehome are set up for the best success.
With the help and guidance of NBGR, we just rescued our second BG through this wonderful team. Connie was a patient and supportive leader of the fostering process. We hope to adopt Penny shortly and be another NBGR success story. Thanks for all you do for these worthy dogs and the families whose lives they change.
I’ve been working with National Brussels Griffon Rescue since June of 2023. I find them to be a truly fabulous organization that goes above and beyond to aid and assist dogs in need as well as the lucky dogs already in their care. I’ve been in the veterinary field for 30+ years as an RVT and a business owner. I’ve had many experiences with different rescue organizations over this time period. Few compare to the level of commitment and care that I’ve been permitted to provide for my current foster Frannie through the team of NBGR! She has had many health challenges all of which have been overcome thanks to this dedicated group.
Thank you all for doing what you do!
Andrea Haupt, RVT, CVMRT
I highly recommend this organization. We love this funny, crazy, adorable breed. We had one for many years until he passed away in 2022. After almost a year, we were ready to think about getting another. We began following NBGR and saw all the great work they did. In the meantime, we found a little girl that captured our hearts and brought her into our home. We thought we were a complete pet household. Funny how fate has other ideas. I was looking on the organization’s website one morning and saw Happy, a guy being fostered in our area. My heart melted. At the same time, my sister saw him and sent me a link, saying “you need him and he needs you.” From the moment we engaged with the representatives of the organization, we could see their love and compassion for the breed. We are so thrilled Happy (now Harry) joined our family. He and his sister are best friends, and he has never met a stranger. Thanks to all those within NBGR who helped us complete our family!
I have been involved with the National Brussels Rescue since early 2014. I have fostered for them and also adopted 3 dogs from them over the years. They are such a wonderful rescue and do what ever needs doing for dogs that come into their program. I can tell you from personal experience that this is one of the best rescues out there! I hope to be involved with them for many more years to come! Here is a picture of myself with my NBGR Paws of Winter foster Moe, and a picture of him snuggling with his forever Mama who adopted him back in 2014 and had to surrender him back in August of this year (2023) due to some major life changes. I fostered Moe for 7 months back in 2014. NBGR found him an amazing home with an older couple, it was such a perfect fit! He was 8 years old then and we didn’t know he would live this long. So here we are, 9 years later and sadly there was a death in his forever family and his remaining owner started having health issues so he came back to stay with me and will be here for the rest of his life through the Paws of Winter program that the NBGR thankfully does. It’s a program where dogs that are too old to adopt out or have medical issues which may hamper finding them an forever home get to stay forever with a foster family and NBGR pays for all the expenses of that dog. It has worked out so well for Moe and his adopter because his mama loves him so much and hated to surrender him back to NBGR, but since I have him now and live close by, we go and visit her often so she can still get her snuggles and kisses from Moe on a regular basis ! Thanks to National Brussels Rescue for helping me to keep Moe for his twilight time. I didn’t think he would ever come back here but he has lived such a long life he surprised us all! This has been such a rewarding experience for me and shows the compassion NBGR not only has for the dogs, but for the people who adopt them as well… xoxo
I was looking for a companion for my Brussels Griffon Roscoe and found out about the NBGR group. I visited my local chapter with the intention of adopting Indy. While going through that process. There was another little girl that kept jumping up on me and giving me "puppy kisses". It was difficult to leave without her but I did. She made such an impression on me that I went back several weeks later to adopt her.
Months later, I received a call from the NBGR advising me that a Brussels Griffon was turned in to a local Animal Shelter. They asked if I could pick it up and "foster" it until they could make arraignments to come pick it up. I agreed and picked him up. He was very aggressive with me at first, and was very obvious he had been abused and neglected. He stole my heart! He made me a "Foster Failure" instantly.
Although Roscoe has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, I'm very pleased that I am still blessed with Indy 13yo, Mia 17yo, and Bentley 16yo. Thank you NBGR for everything you do!
After our first Brussels Griffon passed, we were on the list to rescue a Brussels Griffon for two years. Finally, we got a call and were eager to have our new family member. Then the woman called me and said we could not have one because we did not have a fenced yard. My husband said, do they realize we have 15 acres in Sagaponack? And we fly our own helicopter and jet? So we went and bought from a very nice breeder and told her the story. Our little Coco goes everywhere with us, she never leaves my side.
Review from Guidestar
We rescued our little Gracie in April 2022. We just adore her. NBGR is a wonderful organization. Their people are organized and informative.

Adopting our little Gracie from NBGR was a smooth and thorough process. Our little girl came to us with her little bed, blanket and food. We just love Gracie and could not imagine our lives without her. NBGR does a fantastic job of checking references, speaking with the veterinarian and evaluating the potential home. Vicki and her team do a great job!
National Brussels Griffon Rescue is a wonderful organization. The volunteers are very dedicated and caring; always ready to go out of their way to help a Griffon. I have adopted 3 of their dogs over the years and have loved each one of them dearly. No matter what these dogs have been through before coming into rescue, they will bounce back and steal your heart....so be prepared.
My parents have had such wonderful experiences adopting their beloved Brussels through this group!!! They have adopted older dogs several times to give them a happy last chapter in life, which was incredibly fulfilling, and most recently adopted a younger pup who they hope to cherish for years to come. All of these brussels and brussels mixes have been the kindest, cuddliest characters with such spunky and lovable personalities. Thank you NBGR for the work you do, and for giving my parents their "favorite children."
This group is the ABSOLUTE BEST!!! I have adopted three Brussels Griffons from them and have been pleased with and adored not only each of the dogs but also the people at NBGR with whom I worked to adopt them. They could not be more caring, kind, and loving toward the dogs as well as the adopters. The dogs are well cared for while NBGR has them and are accurately assessed as to personality, health issues, and other pertinent qualities for adoption. It is indeed a trustworthy organization.
NBGR is my favorite nonprofit of all time.
We are very grateful to NBGR for bringing these little girls into our lives after their owner died. We have been fostering for 15 years, and Isabelle & Phoebe are our latest 'foster failures' (pups we decided to adopt).
NBGR volunteers are meticulously thorough in ensuring that each Rescue receives all the vet care necessary and that each is placed in the best home for his or her needs.
We are continuously impressed with everything this all-volunteer group has been able to accomplish since the mid-90s.
This year we adopted our third Griff from NBGR. They have been great to work with. My hope is that once I retire I can spend more time volunteering since they are such a great organization. Right now I’ll just keep adopting when it’s time.
My family has been a part of NBGR since 2011! We've fostered 10 over that time and adopted 4. All of the griffs have been so sweet. This organization is the best. They really care about their dogs and make sure their future homes and families are a perfect fit, and safe before sending them. I cannot say enough great things about this organization!
We have adopted with National Brussels Griffon Rescue, and the entire process was very smooth and enjoyable. The ladies we've worked with have a heart and passion for this breed and work diligently to ensure these dogs go to people that do as well. We adopted our sweet Ginger 4 months ago, and she couldn't be a better fit for our family.
We had such a wonderful experience getting our Emma Bean from National Brussels Griffon Rescue. The volunteers are deeply involved and concerned for this beautiful species! We love(d) our girl. She gave us such love. Hoping to invite another BG from this rescue in the future!
I was introduced to NBGR through my mother who already had two Griffs and a huge love for animals and their wellbeing. When her smooth coat little Sophie lost her older brother Max, the compassion my mom Beverly had seen in the work the rescue did drew her to get involved. The group was accessible and organized and the great work they did was obvious. Harley became her foster failure because she just loved him so much and when my mom passed last year only a year later, the NBGR kept in touch with me because, yes, they were wanting to keep track of Harley’s care, but also because they seem to connect with the dog caretakers on such a wonderfully personal level, too.
I adopted my little girl Ruby about 2006. She was a special love in my life. She was about 7 years old and I had her for another 7. She survived a horrific life and NBGR saved her, thank goodness. They truly gave me the gift of this angel. I then adopted my Timmy from NBGR in 2014. He was my soulmate. NBGR saved him from euthanasia. He was about 8 years old I watched him blossom everyday for the next 5 years. He brought me heart throbbing joy every single minute. NBGR is responsible for all of our happiness. Ruby & Timmy are both in heaven after having a wonderful final few years thanks to NBGR's dedication. I hope to contact NBGR soon so I can find another gift of a Brussels Griffin which will add several more years of delight to my life.
I adopted two littermates (6 months old) in October 2009. They are now 13 1/2 years old and very healthy. I have received great support from the rescue and recommend them to every person who asks about my dogs or small dog rescue.
The pups I got from the rescue were half Brussels Griffon and half Yorkshire Terrier. They are very cute and very sweet. I also support the rescue monthly because they have a lot of unadoptable dogs due to age or health condition and I respect that they do not euthanize unwanted dogs.
Both dogs are obedience trained and in the pics you can see their graduation caps. They were also in one of the AKC's first S.T.A.R. puppy classes and graduated from that as well.
I love this nonprofit for the work they do whether is rescuing a Brussels Griffon from a puppy mill to fostering or volunteers. I adopted my Daisy in 2013 and had her until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2019. Sh had been used at a puppy mill as a breeder and then put up for Auction. NBGR got her and several other dogs. Daisy was fostered in Ohio and that is where her wonderful foster volunteers let me see her. The fostering volunteers just so happened to also be groomers. I raised money this year on my birthday to donate to NBGR. I’ve also personally donated to the Paws of Winter program for senior Griffs. Picture of Daisy is below.
I adopted my Jannie from NBGR in the spring of 2007. She was a wonderful Griff and my first Griff. I had read about the breed and researched and loved the way they looked. We had a dog that was a mixed breed Yorkie/Pekingese mix that was often mistaken for a Griff and after we lost her I knew that my next dog would be a Griff. I was familiar with rescue and had many rescue Yorkies through the years so a Griff was a completely different experience! Jannie was rescued from an Amish puppy mill in Ohio. Jannie became very bonded to me right away, not so much to my husband and I learned what a “Velcro Griff” was! NBGR was always helpful when I had questions about the breed and I have kept in touch with her foster mom all these years and we’ve become friends. Sadly, Jannie left us on January 20, 2020 due to kidney failure. I miss her so much and she was well loved during the years we had her.
I’ve bred and shown Brussels Griffons for many years but some of my best memories are of dogs I had the privilege to foster for NBGR. My first was Molly and I failed. Molly became mine and was with me from age 11 to 19. She was a registered therapy dog and a delight to the end. Rootie was a Paws of Winter boy who had too many health issues to place. He was with me for 2 1/2 years with NBGR continuing to pay his vet bills. It was a difficult goodbye for me but he was so worth it. My other fosters went to such perfect homes that I couldn’t be sad. My association with NBGR has been a great joy.
My husband already had a Brussels Griffon when we met and I instantly fell in love with him, and eventually my husband too. I stumbled upon the NBGR page on Facebook about four years after meeting my first griff and saw Gracie’s toothy grin on an adoption post. I immediately fell in love again and told my husband I had to have her. She was being fostered right outside of Austin, where we were living at the time, so it just seemed like it was meant to be. I applied to adopt her and we were chosen to go through the adoption process. We interviewed in person, then they brought Gracie to meet us and our other griff and to check if our home and yard was a good situation for her. A few days later they let us know that they chose us to adopt her. So we drove a little ways out of town to the foster home and picked her up. She laid in my lap all the way home and since that day she has been my Velcro dog.
We lost our first Griff to cancer in 2016 and were brokenhearted. We thought the best way to honor our baby was to find another Griff and give all that love to them. I found NBGR on Facebook and filled out an application for adoption. From the first contact, I was so impressed! This was my first time to work with a rescue and the two ladies I worked with were two of the most caring and compassionate people! They made sure Dolly was a good fit for us and us for her. We still had a male Griff at home and when one of the ladies came for our home visit, she said meeting him, and seeing how laid back and easy going he was, let her know Dolly would be a good fit. When she brought Dolly to our house, she had me bring our other Griff, Digger, outside so they could meet and interact for a little while before bringing her in the house. That was 6 years ago and Dolly is 14 years old now and still going strong! We are forever grateful to NBGR and they will always be family!
I fell unwittingly into the spell of the Brussels Griffon at an adoption event. I spotted a reddish-brown, chubby "pug mix" (I thought at the time) who was good with cats, so he seemed to fit the bill. "Hank" worked his way into our home & hearts in no time! When he pulled a muscle playing too forcefully with our other dog, I got excellent advice & support from NBGR. Especially in the early days, I corresponded regularly with NBGR & always received a prompt, thoughtful response. During the time we were privileged to have Hank, we attended Brussels Griffon meet-ups with other rescues, which was great fun for both us humans & Hank! Although Hank has passed away, I donate to NBGR as thanks for the many years of happiness they allowed me. This is an incredible nonprofit organization. Thank you.
I have donated to both the Paws of Winter and General Funds for many years. They are also my designated charity on Amazon Smile where a portion of your purchase goes to your charity. Recently I noticed that my monthly donation had stopped, and I've reinstituted it in memory of my boy Zak. These people do amazing work!!!
My husband & I have lost 3 Brussels Griffon. Ethel Louise is our last one Oct. 5. She was a beautiful 8 yr. Old. 2 wks. Ago we sent money to a scamed. He had us confenced it iwas all on the up up. He was in Tulsa, Ok. & he was to ship this baby to DFW airport, then a messenger was to deliver him to our home. We love Brussels. Please give us some thought. The new baby, we ask for a male rough coat. I’ve spent too much time on the internet & Too scared again.

We are so very sorry for the bad experience you had with an unscrupulous organization or person. If you are interested in adopting from NBGR we ask that you please complete our adoption application found on our website. With each adoption the potential adopter will have contact with the assigned adoption coordinator, your veterinarian/person references will be contacted and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be finalized. Also, NBGR never ships their rescues. We pride ourselves on our vetting process to insure that each rescue is placed with families that best fit the needs of the rescue and the rescue is the best match for the family. “Because Each One Is Precious.”
I remember clearly the day that Don, my husband, happened upon the NBGR website. I walked into our office to find Don surrounded by damp tissue handkerchiefs as he read the different accounts of Brussel Griffons that were in need of a home. Together we looked at the pictures and silently read the sometimes heartbreaking descriptions of these little characters that needed some love in their lives.
It was Diane Shelby who contacted us to say that they had the perfect match for us. A beautiful nine- year-old black and tan called Gizmo. He had lived with the same family all of his life but it was now no longer possible for his owners to continue to care for him.
Adopting from NBGR is a stringent process. We provided statements from two references who were called to talk through our suitability and commitment. We also received a house visit to ensure that the home did not present any unforeseen problems. I was rather dreading this but Vikki was charming and put us at ease. She and her husband told us about their own Brussels Griffons and gave me invaluable information about some of the traits of the breed. We soon received the written confirmation that we had passed and we both treasure Vikki's final comment that, in her opinion, Gizmo had “landed his little ass in the sugar bowl!” It's testament to NGBR that they really care about the placing of every animal that comes to them.
It was a wonderful feeling holding Gizmo for the first time and the sense of pride as I walked to the car with him at the end of the lead. On our arrival home we decided to let Gizmo do his own exploring and to eat something if he chose to. I sat on the sofa pretending to read. After a little while, rather hesitantly, Gizmo walked over to me. He took a quick assessment of the height of the furniture, jumped up and snuggled in next to my leg with a deep sigh. We had bonded. I was his special human. And the sofa rule? Well it is only furniture after all.
As the days passed Gizmo visibly gained in confidence. These dogs are smart and I am sure he understands more than we imagine. He puts his head on one side and gives us his 'squint look'. Don only has to start chopping vegetables for Gizmo to slink into the kitchen and wait impatiently for gravity to occur.
It is now six years that our little friend has been with us. The added value to our lives that he has brought is immeasurable. He even indirectly helped in the process of my Green card application as I am from the UK. The frosty immigration officer who interviewed us visibly thawed when she knew we had adopted Gizmo and of all the photographs we had taken with us to the interview these were the ones she was most interested in. Gizmo has traveled with us to Santa fe for the opera season, although he preferred not to attend the actual performances. (I think my husband was of the same mind at times.) He has also been with us through the incredibly sad times when our other dogs became ill and passed away. It was touching when he did his best, in his own way, to console us through that difficult time.
NGBR is a wonderful organization. We have cared for three other dogs, that we took on knowing their pre-existing health conditions. NGBR gave us the support and advice when we needed them. They really do sterling work for this wonderful breed of dog.
We adopted Frannie in 2014. I had actually inquired about another dog, Coco on their website and in the interim, she was adopted and the NBGR volunteer Vicki suggested Frannie. We drove halfway (3 1/2 hours) to Delegate to get her. Vicki was super accommodating to drive the same distance to meet us. It was love at first site for me and my new best friend. She has been in our pack for 7 years now and has come a long way from the scared to death girl that we first met on that day and she is still the light of my life. At 16 she is slowing down a bit, but will still try to work you for that extra treat or two. I always adopt and NBGR did a top notch job during the entire process and hope to adopt from them in the future.
We rescued Demi from an awlful situation at 5 1/2 years old.She had been in four homes before we adopted her.Demi was such a sweet dog and loved a quiet life. She started walking on a leash after she got used of it.I made sure she was always groomed since she was very matted and terribly smelly and the worse was her overgrown nails. So glad rescue were able to help Demi to find us and let her have a forever home.
In March, 2017 we were lucky enough to adopt Gryffin into our home. From the very beginning he and I both knew this was where he belonged. The adoption process was painless. Everyone involved was very friendly. In fact we stay in touch with them. They have become friends. Including Gryffy (what we now call him) we have had 4 different BGs in our home. All have been rescues. I cannot imagine my life now without at least one of these little guys. Thank you National Brussels Griffon Rescue. You have improved the quality of my life a thousand fold.
Our family already currently had 2 brussels griffons (Walter from a AKC breeder and Remington from a shelter in Indiana) but when I saw this little lady on their Facebook page I fell in love with her little face. Camilla who came to us on Fathers Day 2017 as "Clara 3424" had been surrendered by a puppy mill in Ohio. We submitted a detailed application, had our referenced checked, and had some long conversations on what it would take to provide for Camilla since she was coming from a sad situation. The NBGR was very helpful and gave us all the information we needed about her so there were no surprises. We are so happy we adopted her, she had already made lots of progress living with her foster family but she has grown so much since being in a loving environment. The NBGR cares about where their dogs are going and are very thorough when selecting a home, we even sent pictures of our picket fence to make sure she wouldn't be able to sneak through. Her foster family drove her to our house and they were sad to see her go but happy to see her with her new family of people and new pack of brussels griffons. Camilla is still happy and healthy and we are so thankful she was able to be rescued by such a caring organization. Thank you NBGR!
We had lost our pure bred Brussels, Tobey, at age 13 and our youngest, little Mia, a half red rough and black smooth, was out with me for a walk late one night in our nearby woods. Under a copse of trees, we ran into a friend walking her own Brussels, Beau, and she mentioned that another, Harry, was being fostered by the NBGR in nearby Gulfport. We'd never heard of the organization but promptly reached out to it and applied to adopt. We met Harry for the first time at the Gulfport dog park and he and Mia hit it off, including when the foster dad brought him over to walk through the same woods where I'd first learned of him, and to assess our condo and make sure it would be a great forver home. We lost Mia at age 15 two-plus years ago but Harry is still going strong, sleeping on top of our heads as his foster said he would, and serving as a testament to what a great organization the NBGR is. We are actively seeking another Griffon as Harry, now 11, eases gracefully into his later years, cuddling and attentive as he was on day one.
These two cuties are Bella ( formerly Cindy Lou ) and Wicket
We flew to Ohio 6 years ago today to adopt Wicket who is 12 years old now
A year later I flew to NC to adopt Bella who is now 13. They were the 2nd and 3rd in our 4 pack of Griffs
To say we adore them is a gross understatement ! NBGR was extremely thorough in their screening process, which I certainly respect and encourage as this breed definitely needs the perfect fit in a family. The fosters were helpful, kind, and encouraging throughout the process. We love our gang so much and can’t thank NBGR enough
I only wish our fur kids didn’t have to age
I would highly recommend this organization to anyone looking to adopt this unique and lovable breed! We came across them a few years ago when a grif local to me was picked up wondering the streets and was in very rough shape, I was familiar with the breed and called the shelter that he had been taken to everyday to make sure he was ok. A few days later I was contacted by the rescue telling me that they had intervened and taken this sweet boy into their custody and he was going to be well taken care of. I then let them know that we were interested in adopting and if not that sweet boy, we would wait for the right one. (Original pup was placed in their long term foster program as he had numerous health issues which made me relieved and what an AMAZING program) A few weeks later we got our first picture of Rocky, and we knew he was our grif. The process was thorough, which I appreciated, as I knew that he was the right dog for us. It’s been 3 years and we love him so much. I couldn’t imagine my life without them. The work this rescue group does is amazing and I will always sing their praises.
This is a truly wonderful organization that I have been lucky enough to find once learning about the delightful breed called Brussels Griffon. I had noble intentions, but ended up foster failed both times I attempted it. Oh well, I know I'm a keeper and will have that mindset when looking for another furbaby. I have no doubts that I will be a part of this rescue for the remainder of my life, both due to the love of the breed and the outstanding experiences I have had with both my girls.
Back in 2015, we wanted to get a Brussels Griffon, and decided to see if we could find a rescue dog in need of a good home. I went on the National Brussels Griffon website, and as fate would have it, several dogs were available. They had just been rescued from a hoarder situation in Texas. When I looked at their pictures and read descriptions about their history, Antonio immediately stood out. He had lived in a cage for six miserable years in a puppy mill. He was found with a broken jaw, worms, and was totally terrified of everything. I contacted Connie and filled out an application. I was surprised but happy that they asked for references and took the time to carefully screen prospective adopters. We were thrilled when we were finally notified that we had been approved for adoption.
We drove from Laredo to Houston to pick up our new fur baby at Margie’s house. It was delightful to meet Margie, who is a legend in the Brussels Griffon world. She was so instrumental in starting the National Brussels Griffon Rescue. We also met Margie’s daughter and Connie. It was so impressive to see how knowledgeable and dedicated they were to protect this breed, ensuring they receive the best medical care, and the extent they will go to find each rescue a good home.
We changed Antonio’s name to Maximus Rex (the king), or Maxie for short. He happily adapted to our three other dogs, and quickly became part of the pack.
Several months later, Connie contacted me and asked if we would be interested in adopting another rescue who needed a home. We drove to San Antonio and met Bert. We fell in love with him, and he is now happily living with us, and he is Maxie’s best friend. Their favorite outings are taking walks and riding around in the shopping cart at Lowes!
Last year, while I was visiting our veterinarian to get our dogs vaccinated, our vet told me that she had found an injured Brussels Griffon at the local shelter where she volunteers. She had taken the dog to her clinic because she was concerned that he was blind in one eye and partially blind in the other eye. The vet knew that I loved Brussels Griffons and wanted to know if I would take him. He was so adorable and happy, despite having been lost or abandoned, and was trying to survive as a blind dog on the streets of Laredo. The poor dog was so shaggy, we called him Haystack. I could not adopt him permanently, because I already had five dogs, but I knew exactly who to call. I spoke to Holly at the National Brussels Griffon Rescue, who was just wonderful! I drove Haystack to San Antonio, and the NBGR made arrangements for him to be seen by an eye specialist. I cannot say enough about how dedicated this organization is to make sure that each rescue gets the best medical treatment and finds a good home. I am so happy that NBGR found little Haystack a fantastic home, where he can happily spend the rest of his life.
It has been six years since we first met the wonderful people at NBGR. We are so thrilled that they allowed us to have Maxie and Bert in our lives, we just love them to pieces!!! And, I can say that they did not hesitate to help rescue poor Haystack when I called them. NBGR does wonderful work and they are truly the BEST!!!
I have been associated with The National Brussels Griffon Rescue since the mid 1990’s. They are amazing. These compassionate volunteers stretch from the left coast to the right coast of the USA.
A few years ago a senior Brussels Griffon was found on a beach out east. He had such severe dental disease, it had affected his ability to shut his mouth. I still wonder to this day how he could even eat. He was turned over to NBGR. He had surgery on his jaw and ended up staying with his foster family due to his special needs with eating. The National Brussels Griffon Rescues motto is “Because each one is precious”. Well, this little guy found on the beach that day was also precious ~ his story defines who they are. It did not matter that he was a senior, he was in a desperate situation and he found his way to The National Brussels Griffon Rescue and his new life.
They have taken in other breeds, too. A Brussels Griffon and his “brother”, who happened to be a 3 -legged beagle were turned into NBGR. Yep, they had to be adopted together, it was a must!
I cannot say enough about the NBGR volunteers and Margie, who started this rescue. She worked tirelessly to make sure each one in need was cared for. We lost Margie a few years ago but her mighty band of NBGR volunteers have marched on to make sure her legacy continues. Her family said that there wasn’t a stray cat, dog, raccoon or possum that wasn’t fed if it happened to cross her path. She was a true animal lover. I would like to think I have a bit of Margie in me when it comes to my passion for all animals.
I thank you for taking the time to read about this amazing rescue!
My story with the NBGR Inc. - where to begin? I've known and had a relationship with this organization for almost fifteen years.
The National Brussels Griffon Rescue Incorporated (NBGR) is one of the most well organized and dedicated rescue non-profits I've ever known. The volunteer leadership is strong with a national network of dedicated volunteers who find, transport, foster, care for initial medical and social emotional well-being, and knowledgeably place each rescued Griffon in a loving home. All members of the NBGR are volunteers!
The organization has volunteer coordinators in different regions all over the United States. These volunteers work tirelessly and lovingly and frequently must be available at a moment's notice to assist with a rescued or abandoned Griffon and begin the process of helping the dog find his or her forever home!
When the organization places a dog with an owner, they take into consideration all aspects of the breed, the living environment, the owner profile, and any special concerns that are part of a specific rescued or surrendered Griffon.
I want to underscore that the NBGR Inc. has always been with me every step of the way in helping with decisions about whether a Griff adoption was a good fit with my home environment. I know this because once the organization told me that a Griff I hoped to adopt would not be a good fit with my living environment. Then, they recommended another dog that was up for adoption instead. I took their advice and that Griffon match was definitely a match made in heaven.
When I needed advice about caring for my rescued Griffon, the NBGR volunteers always made it clear that the organization was there to be sure that each rescued Griff was in a loving home and it was a successful adoption all the way around.
If not, the NBGR, Inc. will always be there for the dogs they place and insists that adoptive owners return the dog to the organization if that ever became necessary. There are dedicated volunteers who work together to coordinate local efforts to help surrendered, abandoned, or neglected Griffs find loving homes.
At this time, I have two older rescues that the NBGR organization saved. Once it was determined that these two Griffs - Nemo and Taser - would be a good fit in our family home, we were able to adopt them from the rescue organization. They are wonderful and are the full-time companions we wished for in our canine family members.
The NBGR Inc. foster mom and volunteer coordinator for our adoption experience are Facebook friends and delight in hearing the escapades or every-day stories about Tasor and Nemo! This is the case with every special dog helped by the NBGR. I whole-heartedly recommend the National Brussels Griffon Rescue (NBGR) as an exemplary and dedicated non-profit organization.
Our love story with NBGR started in 2014 after I lost my first Brussels Griffin after 15 years. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to commit to having a new pup, however, I wanted to help in any way that I could in Jazz’s honor. After all of my references checked out and my home approved, I was introduced to our sweet Jacky Boy. He was love at first sight. Our fostering situation quickly turned into adoption. He had some health issues that we got immediate care for through the amazing support of NBGR. They worked directly with our vet to make sure that Jacky had everything that he needed to get well. He was with us for 4 years and during that time I always had the support of NBGR.
And then came our sweet Lucy.
She came to us as a foster and based on my record above we all know what came next...adoption! Both Jacky and Lucy have brought so much love and joy to our family and friends! We are forever grateful to the National Brussels Griffon Rescue! They are truly an amazing organization and always have the best interest of the safety and health of the pups and always ensures that they are placed in a home that works out for all. I am blessed to have made some amazing lifetime friends through this organization.
My husband and I were conflicted. We really wanted to adopt a Brussels Griffon but we were committed to rescuing a dog. So, we decided to reach out to National Brussels Griffon Rescue.
That was eleven years ago. Since that time we have fostered in our home, made visits to other potential foster/adoptive families and best of all adopted our sweet mill rescue Giacomo.
The people from NBGR who have guided us through these processes have been organized, thoughtful, supportive and generous with their time every step of the way.
We know that any support you can give to NBGR will be used responsibly to provide medical care, shelter, and loving foster or permanent homes for these wonderful dogs.
We extend to all of the volunteers at NBGR our heartfelt gratitude for all that you do.
After the loss of our beloved 13 year old Brussels Griffon, our breeder Donna Vartarian encouraged me to fill out an application with NBGR. Within days I was contacted about a few beautiful smooth coat in need of a new home. I was vetted through a local volunteer who came to meet our family and inspect our home. Within a couple of weeks I was on a plane to Ohio to pick up our sweet girl Cookie!! Everyone I came in contact with at this organization was so kind and supportive and committed to making the perfect matches to create happy families! I look forward to adopting with them again soon!! Thank you National Brussels Griffon Rescue!!!
We adopted our sweet Eli from NGBR back in 2016 and could not be more grateful. We could not love him more! He is everything good and right in this world all packed into a tiny, furry, lovable ball. We had a wonderful experience working with the rescue and would love to adopt again in the future.
I have been a foster mother, adopter, rescuer and donator for NBGR, Inc. since it's inception. My mother started this rescue when she noticed Griffons being dumped in shelters after gaining popularity from the movie As Good As It Gets.
It is incredibly satisfying to be part of a team of amazing and dedicated volunteers that are concerned with the welfare of these precious angels.
My current permanent foster is Remy. He is a 15-year-old Griffon that was owner surrendered by a loving mother that realized her 12-hour-a-day work schedule was not in the best interest of this little guy that is blind, has pancreatitis, and is incontinent. Being retired, my husband and I were happy to help.
Whether you're looking to adopt a Griffon, foster, or need to surrender, you can be assured NBGR, Inc is a first class organization.
We have both adopted and fostered for this organization. Their love for this breed and for all the dogs they have rescued is very apparent. We will continue to support them in any way we are able.
I adopted 3 Brussels Griffons with NBGR. They are a wonderful rescue dedicated to helping this special breed. The volunteers do everything possible to heal dogs that need medical care and find them the perfect forever home. I highly recommend them if you want to adopt a Brussels Griffon.
NBGR is a team of amazing volunteers that are knowledgeable, dedicated and compassionate. I've been so fortunate to be able to volunteer, foster and adopt through the years from this rescue since I first found them in 2012. They have an incredible Paws of Winter program that helps the senior and special needs dogs in their rescue which I have been so blessed to adopt through. These pups often require an extensive medical work up and extra care and NBGR has always made sure to put that animal first for all their needs and do whatever is necessary to help them live a quality, pain free life for the remainder of their golden years. They are dedicated to that Griff even after adoption and as they follow their journeys in their forever homes. When I lost my fur babies they were right there to offer their love and support. I highly recommend NBGR and you will be so blessed to adopt/foster a Griff from this rescue!
We had gotten our first brussie as a companion to our old black lab. When our lab passed I wanted a friend for our "old Man Gizmo". After getting to know the breed there was no doubt in my mind that we would find another Brussie. I found NBGR and started following them closely. Finally I found Monkey on the Paws of Winter and fell in love! It is really hard to find Brussies in New England so I put out and adoption form right away. From the moment Gizzy and Monkey met they were velcroed! Monkey is the sweetest old girl! She is silly and talkative and a perfect fit for both Gizzy and our 2 cats! We love her bunches and would do it again in a heart beat!!!
My husband and I were very fortunate when we were approved to adopt our girl Ruby. I flew from Nashville to Phoenix to adopt her. Ruby’s foster mom graciously offered to drive from her home in Tucson to Phoenix so I would not have to rent a car. After adopting Ruby, we have fostered a few Griffs and helped transport one to his foster home. They do wonderful work helping to match each dog with the perfect family. We are forever grateful to NBGR for allowing us to be Ruby’s family.
What a wonderful đedicated group of people! Iv volunteered as a foster home and adopter of several wonderful elderly dogs. The breed is lucky to have a group of people like this involved in there welfare
We adopted our Poppy from NBGR in 2019. The volunteers at NBGR was amazing from start to adoption and beyond. It is an amazing organization that is a continuous support throughout the dogs life. We are forever grateful to them for allowing us to love Poppy. She makes us laugh everyday. NBGR is a top notch nonprofit dedicated to the dogs and adopters alike.
I adopted my first Brussels Griffon from NBGR. He came fully vetted and healthy. The experience was so wonderful that I adopted a second Brussels Griffon. The people at this rescue are wonderful and I highly recommend them.
NBGR has been a joy to work with and for. I am not only a volunteer for the rescue but an adopter as well. Everyone with the rescue is truly committed to each and every dog and finding his or her happily ever after. Support from the rescue does not end after adoption. NBGR volunteers are there to offer advice and guidance throughout the life of the dog, if needed. It is a wonderful organization of truly dedicated Griff lovers.
In December 2019, I applied at NBGR to adopt. I had lost my precious boy more than a year prior and the timing was right. The application interview and selection process is very thorough. Before adopting a dog from NBGR, they check personal references, vet references and also do a home visit. Although there were no dogs available at that time, I received a call from Vicki O’Neill indicating she may have a dog that was recently taken from a mill, but she wasn’t ready yet to be put up for adoption. Millie exhibited a lot of mill dog behavior. She was nervous, skittish, and afraid of anything new. She would not walk on a leash and was on meds for stomach concerns most likely due from nervousness and anxiety issues.
Vicki and I both agreed that it would be best for Millie, if we waited a bit to give her a little more time. In June, Vickie and her husband travelled over three hours to bring Millie to me! Vickie not only came with Millie but she brought her bed, her favorite toy, and enough food for a week or two. I am sure Vickie wanted to feel comfortable that she was leaving Millie in good hands with me and also wanting to see my home, my back yard, and my other dogs. I thank her for that!
Millie was a challenge. The first few days were rough, but each day improved. She no longer is on meds and she is now walking on a leash without a problem. Millie is a work in progress and so rewarding as I see her progressing.
NBGR is a dedicated and caring group that saves and improves the lives of Brussels Griffons. I cannot say enough about them. I appreciate all the work that NBGR does to ensure the welfare of every dog and in bringing Millie into my life!
NBGR is a non-profit you can support with 100% confidence! I have been involved on both the donor and adopter sides of NBGR. This organization puts every dog into a loving foster home and provides the very best vet care. My beloved Simon and Suzie came into my life with NBGR. Please consider a one time or monthly donation to this worthy organization!
I got my first Brussels Griffonin 1998 at that time I was told about National Brussels Griffon Rescue. About two years later I saw a picture of a Griff that needed a home, I called and after I was checked out with my veterinarian, two references and an inspection of my home, I was approved to adopt Jackson (formerly Grover). Six months later I was asked by Kathy with NBGRescue if I was willing to take on another rescue, I was happy to help and we adopted GiGi.
In 2006 we fostered eight griffs from a hoarding situation we helped find homes for four of them but ended up adopting the other four.
Since then we have helped with donations and have fostered about a dozen griffs.
In 2011 we agreed to foster Chrissy who was found Christmas night with a perforated cornea. Chrissy was only about a year old and NBGR paid to have her eye surgically repaired, we fostered Chrissy for months of post op treatment and three different eye drops. After many months we adopted Chrissy as we only had GiGi still with us. In 2013 we fostered nine year old Max but we fell in love with him and failed fostering and adopted him. In 2017 we lost Max to a blood disease. Several months later we adopted Kiko but due to heartworm disease he died a year later.
There are volunteers in almost every state ready to take in a foster and love them like their own then with tears help find a forever home.
I personally have done home inspections to make sure the yard is fenced, the home is safe and all residents were in agreement about adoption.
NBGR was wonderful in helping add to my Brussel Griffon family. I lost my first dog & BG a few years ago and my very needy BG I still have was needing a friend. I contacted NBGR to help me find a new fur baby and they immediately sent me our sweet boy we have now. I was interested in seniors because they seem to be last to get selected and Chewy does not act anything like a senior. He was 11 when we adopted him and I will never forget how he popped up out of his crate when I went to pick him up. Goofy looking!! He has held up to that first impression almost 2 years later. Sweet as candy, stubborn as a mule, and snores like a freight train. He has been an amazing playmate for my other BG who is 12 and has made us more active by demanding walks daily and will not stop scratching his box where his leash is kept until we walk him. I will always come back to NBGR for future rescues.
We have been involved with NBGR since about 2009. We’ve fostered several dogs and both our current dogs were adopted from NBGR. We love this organization! Everyone involved is dedicated to the dogs and the organization spares no expense to keep dogs in their care happy, healthy, and comfortable.
We'll forever be grateful to NBGR for rescuing our sweet Kiddo. She was in tough shape when they found her, but her incredible NBGR foster-mom Lyn nursed her back to health. The minute we saw her face online, we knew she'd be the perfect addition to the family alongside our first rescued Griff, Hanzo. To make sure that we were a good fit, NGBR sent someone to our apartment for a thoughtful screening. Luckily Hanzo was on his best behavior, and we were approved for adoption! When we first met Kiddo, she was a timid little thing, but with her new older brother showing her the ropes, she slowly came out of her shell. Six years later she's blossomed into equal parts adorable and ridiculous. This silly girl makes us laugh out loud every single day. We can't imagine what her early years were like, but we count our lucky stars that NBGR was there to bring her into our life.
In 2012, I happened upon the National Brussels Griffon website and there they were: Molly and Chewy, a bonded pair. Although I have had dogs all of my life, I had never adopted. The NBGR's process is very thorough. I appreciate the way they ensure that dogs will be well taken care of. Four years later, I adopted one more, Sammy. His foster mom had two elderly Griffs that probably would not be adopted but the NBGR was dedicated to caring for them for the rest of their lives. That's what I love about this organization. They are committed to the animals. They insure that their medical and emotional needs are met. The Paws of Winter is a program that cares for Griffs that are seniors or that have special needs. The NBGR is supportive to the adoptive parents...only an email or call away. The network of volunteers make this huge sprawling country seem like a small, caring neighborhood community. They work together efficiently and in such a friendly manner.
I cannot praise this nonprofit enough. It is outstanding!
My sister, who volunteers with NBGR, one time asked me if I could keep a puppy for a few days because a family not far from me was desperate to get rid of it. I said sure, and Milo was dropped off very soon after. His hair was tangled and matted, but he was utterly delighted to meet us! From his boundless geniality and enthusiasm, you'd never guess he'd spent the previous 7 months in a puppy mill, a pet store, and a home where he was unwanted and neglected. In fact, he was so sweet and outgoing and lovable that we quickly realized we couldn't possibly part with him. That was 12 years ago, and Milo is still as super-friendly and cuddly and dear to us as ever. We will always be grateful to NBGR for bring him into our lives!!
PS Over the years, I have observed my sister in action on behalf of this group and have heard many rescue stories. The time, effort, and love these volunteers put into their work is truly inspiring! The people she works with are the kind who would jump in the car and drive for hours to fetch/deliver a dog in need - or would say yes on the spot when asked to foster a challenging rescue with costly health problems. In other words, they LOVE dogs and are fierce in advocating for their welfare. The volunteers are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful to those seeking canine companions - but the bottom line is not accommodating the people but ensuring that every dog goes to a safe, loving home.
National Brussels Griffon Rescue is an outstanding organization run by the kindest and most empathetic people walking the planet who give countless hours of their time to alleviate the suffering of those most in need. The expertise and exceedingly high level of professionalism ensure the organization is run well and efficiently. The group is incredibly timely with a network of devoted well vetted foster homes and adopters to swoop in on any situation at a moments notice to provide much needed help. Over many years I have had the great opportunity to work with Vicki and was able to bring home Griff, Gordon, Coco 1, Coco 2, Oliver and Jock. This group of very special adoptees included a puppy mill rescue, a formerly obese pup, a diabetic pup, a pup with Cushings disease, and several with neurological issues and eye ailments. One sweet pup was given up blind and in ill health and we were able to provide end of life care and comfort and love of just one week. Another sweet pup was given by a wonderful older gentleman from a loving home who we still keep in touch with and send pictures.
The stories of logistics to get these pups properly vetted with much needed medical care and on to their new homes speaks to the dedication of this group with multiple drivers needed over many hours/days at times.
The success of the group is the result of the wonderful people who run it. The vetting that goes on is extensive and respected. Recently I decided to take in a pup from another organization and learned that other groups do not compare to NBGR in their ability to properly screen their animals and match to the best family. As much as these groups are working to help animals in need they may not have the expertise to successfully place these pups.
NBGR also works to help other similar breeds with courtesy postings and also pups who may not be fully BG. This is a wonderful organization that does not discriminate and deserves our support.
The group is also a wonderful resource for those of us who have adopted. I am amazed at the wealth of medical expertise and experience when I have called with questions in the past.
Thank you Vicki and NBGR for all of the incredibly wonderful selfless work to place these precious pups!
I have adopted twice now from this rescue. The experience has been so rewarding, and not just because of the 3 dogs I adopted. The people I have dealt with are so caring, yet extremely vigilant about how and where the rescues are placed. Extreme care is taken to make sure each dog goes to the right "forever home" as they call it. And it doesn't stop there, your contact in the organization is available to answer questions and give assistance anytime you need it. The depth of knowledge about the breed is amazing. I have been in touch with the woman who assisted me in my adoptions for nearly 10 years now-she's a friend. It's so comforting to know you have someone you can talk with. Here's a picture of my latest rescue-Mr. Murphy (king of our household!)
I became acquainted with the Rescue in 2010. I couldn't adopt but called to see if I could give some assistance to some dogs I saw on the website; they had some medical problems I was familiar with. 4 months later, I adopted those same 2 dogs. That was the beginning of a wonderful relationship. I became a volunteer with the organization and am still one today, 11 years later. You couldn't find a more caring, dedicated group of people- all of them volunteers. Willing to go anywhere and do anything to help the sweet little monkey faces. Over the past 11 years I have adopted again and I treasure my relationships with the people that I work with. As a volunteer I am aware of how much it costs to "rescue"-veterinarian visits, surgeries, medications... I truly enjoy my volunteer status-I'm priviliged to belong to such a wonderful group. I've included photos of those first two little angels I.adopted so long ago.
The National Brussels Griffon Rescue is amazing. They go above and beyond for their fur babies and those that take care of them. I’ve fostered and adopted 3 Griffs and was a permanent foster to a super special senior Oscar. Oscar came to the rescue with an old injury that was never properly treated. He walked with a severe limp but oh was he a fighter and a charmer. I would allow him to walk as far as I felt safe then he would ride in a little Red wagon for the rest of the way. The rescue provided all the medical care he needed while he lived out his best days with us.. His bonded partner Ruby I adopted as a senior also she was such a joy. The rescue has allowed me to be a mom to these angels and they have stolen my heart over and over. I’m now the blessed mom of two little loves Gabby and Maggie. They were both owner surrenders. Gabby needed expensive surgery when surrendered which the rescue provided all the funds for. Maggie came looking very neglected and needed full vetting. They gave her everything she needed. I will continue to support this rescue in anyway I can and hope other will too.
In 2013 we found these two handsome gents through NBGR. They rescued them from an Ohio puppy mill. Their entire life up to that point had been spent in the mill...never knowing human kindness, human touch, or love. They were used solely for breeding. At the ripe old age of approximately 3 years, the breeder was done with them. Along with two other "cell mates", they were dropped off at a local vet in a box with written instructions for them to be destroyed. NBGR thankfully intervened and stopped this from happening.
We were in the market for one additional family member, however, seeing the bond that Russell and Hudson shared, it was a no brainer that we were going to acquire two.
Unsure and afraid of dog toys, leashes, hardwood floors, people, and just outside life in general...these two boys were clearly broken. They would sit in the corner, fearful of the world around them. Our hearts, along with theirs, were broken.
Through 8 years worth of love, treats, and gentle handling, these guys have come a long way. They are healthy, walk on a leash, get pampered at the groomers, play with toys, cuddle on the couch, have two new sisters they love dearly, and make us laugh on a daily basis. They're continuously learning that being held, snuggling, getting kisses, and going for walks are some of their favorite things.
With teary eyes I'm happy to report that they've been saved from being puppy producers, from being stuck in a cage their entire life, and that they are 100% spoiled rotten by their forever family. We love these guys to the moon and back, and look forward to many more years of rewarding progress. And all of this would not have been possible without NBGR. Our entire experience with all of their volunteers has been exemplary. This nonprofit far exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend them!
I have been a volunteer for NBGR for 16 years. My first experience with NBGR was as an adopter back in 2005 when we adopted our Otter from them. It was a great experience, and a excellent rescue to work with, and really caring people. A few years later I was approached about fostering for NBGR. I have never fostered but decided to try it. Turned out to be the best decision ever!! My first foster was a tiny ferrel Griffon named Pammie. She was a challenge but with support from the coordinators I was able to work through Pammie’s issues. I ended up adopting Pammie as she needed to stay where she was comfortable. As the years have passed my husband and I had the pleasure of many wonderful Griffs in our home. During that time I adopted 2 more sweet Griffs that I fostered.
I also help with processing the references on the adoption and foster applications. It’s a great way to meet people that share the love of the special breed. All the coordinators, and volunteers are caring and loving people who always put the needs of the Griffs first. I’m proud to be involved with this great non profit organization.

We adopted Ernie from NBGR in 2015 and Wiley in 2016. These boys have brought us untold love, laughter, and joy. NBGR has displayed incredible "above and beyond" dedication to giving another chance at life to dogs in need of a home, love, and medical support . Our lives have been greatly enriched by Ernie and Wiley, and we are grateful to NBGR for helping to bring them into our home. NBGR shows such compassion for animals in need, and they helped to make the adoption process smooth throughout.
We have adopted 4 beloved dogs with the assistance of NBGR beginning in 2008. The wonderful thing is the friendships and support we still get from this dedicated organization. Each person involved is 100% committed to the health, happiness, and wellbeing of the dog. This is what rescue is all about! I am forever grateful to this team for the love we have received.
This rescue goes above and beyond any rescue I know!
We adopted Bo from NBGR when he was 10. He is now 12. He is blind and diabetic. We were looking for one that may be overlooked or hard to place, and he was a perfect fit for us, since we already had experience with our other diabetic Griff. He's such a good boy and we are so happy to have him! But prior to coming to us, NBGR spent a lot, making sure his diabetes was under control (because it wasn't when he got there), as well as being otherwise healthy. After adopting Bo, NBGR asked if we would be willing to foster another diabetic Griff. We said, of course! So we got Lulu. What a character she was. Unfortunately, she ended up having more issues than just diabetes, including cancer. So she was going to be our "forever foster". NBGR spent a lot of money on that poor girl to make what time she had left was as good as it could be. She lived longer than expected, by almost a whole year! That's due to the care and compassion that NBGR is willing to do for these babies. After Lulu passed away, we were asked if we would foster Zoe and Patty (who had come from a hoarding situation). Again, we said, of course! Unfortunately, within just a couple of months, Zoe (who was on several meds as well as subcutaneous fluids) succumbed to her chronic kidney and heart disease. So she was put to rest. Fly high little princess! But Patty is still with us. She is 15 and blind. She too, is on several meds. And like Zoe, has chronic kidney disease, fluid on her lungs, enlarged heart, heart murmur, and since being at the rescue, has also had to have all of her teeth pulled, due to them being rotten and big whole going up into her sinus cavity because of it. But she's still a feisty little girl! But just think about how much this costs the rescue. The prescription diets alone are expensive, not to mention the medications and all the xrays, ultrasounds, MRI's, and office visits that these older fosters require. It's astronomical! Most rescues would not put forth the effort, let alone this much effort, to make sure these babies are comfortable and well taken care of. I just can't say enough about how impressed I am with the quality of care they provide.
I have now adopted 2 Brussels Griffons from this rescue organization, and I have to say both times the process was effected incredibly professionally. The first little male was Big'N and I traveled a little way to meet him and the wonderful lady who had taken him when his mistress could no longer care for him. She spent a lot of time making sure I was the right person to adopt .She made sure I had a safe enclosed yard for Big'N, looked at where the dogs would be kept in the house, and asked me about my vet. Unlike some dog breeds, Griffs do not like to stay alone all day, and I work from home, so that was a plus for me. So happily I passed, and he was a joy to have. This March I was told of a female that needed a new home. I jumped in my car as fast as possible , and met Ruby, who is the new love of my life. The people who work for this rescue organization are the best, most caring people in the world. And they should be because these dogs are really something special .
I love this organization! They are very professional and they care so much about Brussels Griffons. The application interview and selection process is very thorough. We got our boy 2 years ago after NBGR rescued him and brought him back to life, he is such a lovely sweet boy and I cannot thank NBGR enough for everything they did for him!!
I love NBGR! My sweet boy Dylan was adopted thru their rescue years ago. He was such a good boy. When he crossed the rainbow bridge I knew I’d rescue again. Then along came my big goofy boy Maverick into rescue! He has been such a fun quirky addition to our family. And he just loves his sister Daisy! I will always be grateful for this rescue and the joy it’s brought me from finding my little furry love bugs!
NBGR is an amazing rescue organization that cares so much about Brussels Griffons. They are so thorough in making sure that each Brussels Griffon that they rescue ends up the very best home based on the particular dog’s needs. Before becoming a foster or adopting a dog from NBGR, they check personal references, vet references and also do a home visit to ensure that they are placing these precious dogs in a safe and loving environment. I became a foster in 2019 and was trusted to foster a senior, Morty, that NBGR rescued from a shelter in Florida. Morty adapted so well to my family and after realizing all his medical issues, we determined it was best that we foster Morty long term. Vicki and Darlene from NBGR are there for every question, concern or advice that I need while taking care of Morty. I feel honored that they have trusted me to take care of this little old man that we love so very much. I cannot recommend this rescue organization enough.
11 years ago I rescued a 3 month old puppy from NBGCR. THAT PUPPY IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. His name is “Shepzel “ Sheppy “ and he was fostered from 3 weeks of age with his mother and 2 brothers by a local Griffon breeder. He had such loving care until he was ready to be adopted at 3 months of age.
I applied for adoption of Sheppy ( my name) with NBGCR and was fortunate after a thorough evaluation, I was approved to adopt this tiny boy. The Foster Mom said that Sheppy was the most intelligent pup she ever saw.
Sheppy was smarter than imagined. He knew to retrieve his toys by name at 4 months. He was an AKC Star Puppy, AKC Canine Good Citizen and an AKC Novice Agility Jumper. Sheppy’s greatest achievement was becoming a complex rated Pet Partner Therapy Dog at age one.
As a Pet Partner for 10 years, Sheppy is a member of the UCLA People Animal Connection Team (PAC). He visits hospitalized patients. He is a “Read With Me” Pet Partnerst local schools and Libraries and is supporting families in the UCLA NODA (No One Dies Alone) Program.
Above all, My Rescue Sheppy rescued me and so many others. He has made the world a better place.
I can not say enough wonderful things about all that NBGR does. We have adopted two of our fur babies from them. They took them in when they needed a safe place to land and thought carefully about the needs of the each one before placing them. It’s not about the people, the dogs always comes first with NBGR and you can see that in everything they do!
In 1998 we got our very first Griffon with the help of Margie Simon. She was the originator of National Brussels Griffon Rescue and I had many phone conversations with her until she was convinced I was worthy of a Brussels Griffon. No, our first boy was not a rescue. There were none available at the time and she directed me to a breeder that had one available.
But just because my little guy wasn’t a rescue didn’t mean Margie let me off easy. I started by checking Petfinders daily and reporting any Brussels Griffons on the website that were available for adoption. Eventually my husband and I were doing home checks, transporting, fostering and helping place Griffons. In March 2007 we started a yahoo website called Rescued Griffy Chat. It was for people who had adopted a Griffon from NBGR as well as foster parents to be able to connect and discuss all things Griffon. It had a long run until Yahoo shut down all their groups this year.
As the saying goes, you can’t have just one. After we acquired our first Griff, we have since had four more, two of which we adopted. Brussels Griffons are different from most breeds because they want to be with their human people all the time, even if just in the same room. But most are cuddly loving to sit next to you on the couch or chair. And especially in the big bed at night!
Having worked with different people in NBGR in so many capacities over the years, I had the opportunity to interact with many of the volunteers and understand the workings of the organization. The rescues come first, their health a top priority. People have donated over and above for special cases. The foster parents treat each rescue as if it were their own, loving them, instilling confidence, training and staying the course until the right home comes along.
Rescue is run by dedicated volunteers who will do whatever it takes, including using their own funds at times, to help each dog that comes into the program. The placement in the right home so very important.
The pictures are of our two rescues, Taylor and Louise. No longer with us physically but still deep within our hearts.
In 2016, NBGR had posted the little information they had on Daisy Mae and some pictures. We had already had one Griff but it was love at first sight and she struck such a chord that we knew she needed to be part of our family. We rescued her shortly after, but NBGR definitely did their due diligence in making sure Daisy was adopted to the right home. She was our little princess and we spoiled her for as long as we could. Sadly, we lost her in October of 2019 and she is missed dearly every single day. The folks at NBGR truly care about their rescues and ensure they find not just a forever home, but the right forever home for these sweet babies. There is no doubt that when the time comes to add to our Griff family, we will turn to NBGR as they are simply the best!

In 2010, we lost our beloved Abby, a Brussels Griffon who we naively got through a pet store. After four months of grieving her, I convinced Bill that we needed a “transition” griff to help us through our grief. We turned to NBGR and rescued (or maybe they rescued us) our Pixie and Dolly. For six years, these two silly girls brought us such joy. When they left us—just six months apart—we agreed to wait several years before getting another dog. That resolve lasted about a year when, once again, we saw two delightful girls on the NBGR website. We drove from Houston to Kansas City to pick up KIMI and Kishi. I think we have made a difference in their lives; I know they have made a difference in our lives. The people at NBRG—Margy Simons, Connie Lawrence, Jan Carpenter and all the others—have dedicated their lives to ensuring that these precious fur babies find the perfect home. It is our joy to have been/be that perfect home for four of these babies.
We adopted our amazing Griffon Gabbie from NBGR in 2016, and I was impressed with the organization from day one! The dogs best interests are their number priority, and they go to great lengths to make sure the dog is matched according to its needs and the families needs. They REALLY care about all their rescues, and it is evident in everything they do. From phenomenal foster families, a rigorous screening process, medical care, and being available even after adoption for anything that might come up with the pup. It’s a great organization and it’s given my family the best furry friend we could ever ask for! :)
NBGR is an excellent rescue organization that cares so much about Brussels Griffons in need! I rescued my Griff, Pukky, from them in 2011 and NBGR has kept in touch with us all these years! Pukky crossed the rainbow bridge in October 2020 so I started volunteering with NBGR as a way to thank them for trusting me to be Pukky’s mom. Now I have a whole new appreciation of all the work NBGR does to save and improve the lives of Brussels Griffons all across the country! I am so proud to be a member of the NBGR family!

We appreciate your taking the time to post your review but believe there is some confusion. We located the applications you submitted. We are scratching our heads that you say you were rejected for not having a fence, yet your 2012 application clearly stated you have a - “Fully fenced grass yard. Wood picket, safe fencing, no holes or gaps, very small spacing between slats, two secure and locked gates, 4ft high. Very large area for running and playing. We live on 68 acres here, so we have room!, however I keep my yard very secure for my dogs.” And on your 2017 application you stated “Wooden picket large grass fenced in yard. Two securely latched gates for entry/exit. Fence approx 4 feet high.” So, we aren’t sure why you feel you were rejected due to no fence. We are happy to discuss this with you if you would like to contact Connie Lawrence 713-203-7862
