We watched the documentary Living On One Dollar and was impressed by the scope of work Natün does, as well as the thought that goes into the organisation and their programs. I signed up to donate and was surprised by their personalized communcations and forthrightness. They seem like the genuine good guys!
La Asociación Natun fomenta un ambiente acogedor y respetuoso. El personal trata a todos con amabilidad, creando un espacio de aprendizaje y positivo. El objetivo principal de la asociación es ayudar a la comunidad maya a través de sus diversos programas.
I have followed Natun since they were Mayan Families in 2016. A friend who was volunteering there in 2016 introduced me to the organisation, and I know someone else who worked with them just before the pandemic. I really support and endorse their transformation to something more locally led and guided, and think that is a step in the right direction for NGOs and this work in general!
I have been a donor and also a volunteer with the former Mayan Families organization that has transitioned under new leadership to Natün Guatemala. This transformation has been productive, organized and purposeful, establishing local departments heads instead of expats. Local (Mayans) who live in the villages served by Natün know what kind of support their communities need. I love that Natün is collaborting with local, regional and national organizations to meet the needs identified by the communities. For example, the Ministry of Education has now authorized a graduate certificate for students completing the trades program. Another collaboration is with school districts who have agreed to have Natün provide tutoring support for students who are struggling. These changes are systemic and long term, not short term support like the original founders did with individual donations. Kudos to the Natün leadership and with strong values and clear direction for systemic change.

Value Added Experience
When I starting doing volunteer work with Mayan Families, I had no idea that 11 years later, my definition of extended family now includes a Mayan family whose children my husband and I sponsor for their education. We sponsor 3 children (2 girls and a boy) so that they will get an education beyond cultural expectations and hopefully the education will lead to increased employment opportunities. The Guatemalan Family has welcomed us with open arms, a reciprocal relationship where we both give and take. When my mother died, this family offered me their love hoping to reduce the love I was missing. While I visit the family every year, husband, granddaughter, son-in-law, and sister have all traveled to Guatemala to meet the family and learn about their culture. I have been so privileged to have this opportunity through Mayan Families as they provide the transportation as well as Spanish, English and Kakchiquel (local Mayan dialect) interpreters to ensure communication is clear for all of us. Such a rich and rewarding experience for me. Grateful to Mayan Families and their staff for all the work they do to provide support related to education, health and nutrition to the indigenous people in the highlands of Guatemala. I am attaching a photo of the family with my husband and me, plus a photo of the kids reading to me from books I brought them.
I have personally seen the outstanding growth of Natun Guatemala over the past ten years. Not only being a financial donor and board member but also visiting with my Rotary Club on a yearly basis. They provide much needed services for the indigenous population around the Lake Atitlan area that are in line with their strategic plan.

As a former 25+ year executive in the nonprofit field, I feel I know what a charitable organization should look like and I'm thrilled to now support Natun Guatemala as a board member. The current five year strategic plan is on course to succeed and is monitored on a regular basis to make sure it is meeting the community needs. I have personally seen the indigenous Mayan clients that are served and the dramatic difference that Natun Guatemala has made in their lives. Please support this great organization.
Natün Guatemala is a wonderful organization! I have had the pleasure of working with Natün for the past two years. As a student of Ohio State, I have been involved in a course that brings students to Panajachel to work on community based learning projects. These trips and projects would not be possible without Natün. They have always been incredibly welcoming and have created connection and conversations between the community and the students. I cannot speak highly enough of the people at Natün and the work that they do! They are the kindest individuals who are doing amazing work.
I worked with this group for a rather short period of time, but I can say with confidence that they do good work and benefit the communities around them. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable in their area of work. They are compartmentalized, but integrated, making them powerfully efficient in their responses to community needs. I felt welcomed from the first day and had only positive interactions and learning experiences with this group of people. The people this organization aims to help have a voice in the decisions made and within the organization itself.
I was inspired to support Mayan Families by former director of the organization.
They've communicated clearly how my contribution benefitted the participants in their program. Through the changes in mission and leadership, the kept me informed at every step. Their end-of-year tax documents are delivered timely.
I had the great privilege of working with Natün Guatemala as they were transitioning to new programs, new fundraising methods, and a strong, primarily indigenous staff. At the heart of their work is a deep respect for the Mayan people, for the ecosystems of Guatemala, for the history and culture of the country and particularly the Lake Atitlán region. This is a board of directors and a staff of professionals that take their work seriously and live out a sincere commitment to their mission and to the people with whom they partner. As a professional working in the community impact field, I have many opportunities to identify and support great organizations. I choose to support Natün Guatemala financially and do so with confidence and satisfaction.
Natun Guatemala is a phenomenally heartfelt, people-centric NGO. Natun recently hosted an online auction and live event from which I purchased two items. One is a handmade quilt and pillow shams. The other an amazingly beautiful Christmas ornament and handmade cutting board set. It is an honor to display these handmade items in my home. You can feel the love and attention to detail with which each item was made.
Natun Guatemala is "different" than other NGOs. It's sincerely organized and highly educated staff work with their "hearts." People are the focus - how to serve more people and serve them better. I will be returning to Guatemala in a few months to visit the Natun offices and hope to have the honor to visit with their staff to determine how my company can further support their efforts. People, places, and dedication from a staff who serve - this is what makes Natun an outstanding organization.
We have worked with Natun Guatemala (formerly Mayan Families) for many years. As a faculty member at the Ohio State University, we have been bringing students to Panajachel, Guatemala to work on community based learning projects since 2015. Natun Guatemala has been excellent in facilitating conversations between the community and the students and helped us play a supporting role in many of the community led projects.
Kansas State University has had a formal relationship with Natun for many years. As part of our Guatemala Education Abroad program, where students spend 6 weeks working with NGOs in the Lake Attilan region, Natun has been an invaluable resource! They serve as our local program managers and ensure that both students and the organizations have a very meaningful experience. Aside from their role in our student program, Natun has impressed us with the work of their organization. They focus on providing high quality, efficient services to improve the lives of the local Mayan community. They emphasize the value of knowing and working with the local community so that the changes being implemented are acknowledged, accepted, and trusted by local communities. I highly recommend working with and supporting this organization in their work!
In my 6 years of sponsoring a child and 4 visits to her family and to Natün Guatemala, I have seen the complexities of poverty and oppression directly. I am impressed with Natün Guatemala’s progressive vision and approach in addressing the needs and inequities of the indigenous community with a wholistic approach that works to enable the children and families to have the health, skills, and opportunities to succeed.

I have been involved with Maya Families for 6 years which included 4 visits to the organization and to my sponsored child and her family so I am familiar with the population and the needs in the area. I have seen incredible growth in Mayan Families as an organization, not only in the scope of the services from education, but now to include clean water, health, vocational training, employment, health, nutrition, and community building. The success of supporting education, an enormous need in Guatemala, is born out by their statistics and decreased drop out rates as well as having implemented tutoring by the students who have progressed to the university. The vision and goals have grown from providing a service to empowering and enabling the population by including them in the vision and decision making and providing resources and skills to help them move out of poverty to self-sufficiency as individuals, as families, and as communities. Staff are recruited from the population. They are very clear how all of these factors are interdependent for success. Mayan Families has also grown in its organization and management, efficiency, and reliability. Sixteen thousand residents of the area benefit from the presence and the work of Mayan Families. I would love to see their model replicated throughout Guatemala and Central America.
Natün in Latin means growth, roots. In Guatemalan language Kaqchikel means unity. Natün resonated for all of us in the organization (as a Guatemalan I´m proud to be the Vice President of the Board of Directors), and our key stakeholders at community level in the Lake Atitlán Region, in Sololá department.
Our name change was only a milestone, nevertheless, our real goal was to transform an organization, into an efficient development partner at community level. Committed externally to transparency, being an ally to communities, and facilitating development opportunities, holistic support and a path to self-sustainability.

I coincided with Mayan Families in 2017 through networking events for university student exchanges thanks to a university faculty team, but it was in 2019 when I led a cooperation agreement between the organization I worked for and Mayan Families, placing volunteers that supported the organization in different health, nutrition, and education activities. (That year one of the student cohorts developed important community consultation and research that later helped build the ongoing strategic plan of the organization).
In 2020 I accepted the invitation to serve as a board member because I strongly support their vision of strong, vibrant, and self-sufficient Mayan communities in the Lake Atitlán region of Guatemala, but especially because I have strong ties to the region, believe in locally-led initiatives to support community development, with strong political will, strong institutions, with prosper territories and opportunities for all.
Natun Guatemala is doing incredible work for indigenous communities in the Lake Atitlan region. I was particularly impressed with their program which focuses on addressing malnourishment in children through not only providing emergency food, but also focusing on educating parents about nutrition to prevent malnourishment, where possible. They are visionaries in providing people with the skills and tools needed to transform their lives.
Our daughter and son-in-law adopted a baby girl 16 years ago from Guatemala. They introduced us to Natun when it was Mayan Families. We have supported the organization in a number of ways: donating funds, school sponsorships, being in country and taking other family, friends, Rotary members and Church friends to Guatemala. In particular we have worked with locals to build walls, housing, put in cement floors where there was only dirt, added lighting and electricity for homes and provided funds for food baskets.
Five years ago I joined the Board and have been incredibly supportive of the direction the organization has taken to support indigenous persons living in the Lake Atilian area. We now give to the general fund knowing that the funds will be directed to the programs as leadership feels appropriate.

My involvement with Mayan Families extends over a six year period. Most recently the organization has developed into a first rate non-profit focusing on several communities in the Lake Atitlan area. The approach has been on three pillars: education, health and nutrition and economic development. Working in conjunction with community leaders and parents in these communities. Mayan Families has been able to better understand the needs of each community enabling an appropriate response. It's a matter of assisting the community to become self-sufficient. Not easy, but possible over time. I remain impressed that the organization now has indigenous leadership in all programs and is led by a dynamic Executive Director who understands the importance of building capability within communities and the organization.
I see that I can only choose one role. I am a Board member and my husband and daughter's family are also donors.
This great organization works with indigenous people in the Lake Atitlan region of Guatemala. They strive to train indigenous leaders within the communities in order to self-sustain the education, nutrition, trades, and elderly support programs. I have supported this organization for many years, traveled to Guatemala to see the work in person, and have met many on the Board and leadership teams. This is the real deal.

I've supported Mayan Families for many years. In that time I've seen this organization grow and change to meet the needs of the indigenous community around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. They have improved accountability of their staff, brought more indigenous persons on staff, and narrowed the focus to best serve the community.
I have been a supporter of Mayan Families for nearly 15 years, and I have also served on the Board of Directors. At this time, I am a donor and a member of the Leadership Circle, providing an annual gift of unrestricted funds to be used as the staff deems appropriate.
The trust and faith that I have in Mayan Families is genuine. I have watched the organization grow strong and transparent and insist upon integrity. The mission is now focused on three critical areas (education, nutrition and health, economic development), and the programming is based on a self-reliance model.
Through very thoughtful teaching moments, donors are learning how to support the community in a respectful manner that maintains the dignity of the program participants. There has been a beautiful shift from a "charity model" to a development model, and I look forward to continuing to be a part of the work.
Thank you, Mayan Families, for becoming a model nonprofit in Guatemala!

I became involved with Mayan Families several years ago after seeking ways that our family could "give back" to Guatemala. The youngest of our four children was adopted from GUA in 2005. A post on a GUA Adoptions message board led me to investigate Mayan Families further, and I'm sure glad I did. My initial connection was through a Yahoo Group called Mayan Families Connection, comprised of individuals (mostly from the US) who wished to band together to help MF. Soon after joining MFC, I offered to coordinate a shipment of donations to MF, and I have been coordinating 2-3 shipments each year for the past three years with the help of other MFC families who are local to the Boston area. In March, 2010, I was blessed with the opportunity to "follow the boxes" and visit Mayan Families in Panajachel, GUA. I get misty-eyed just thinking about my amazing week with Sharon, Patti, Dwight, and all of the wonderful staff members. While in Pana, I was able to visit with the students that I sponsor, I helped to assemble Easter baskets for Semana Santa, I assisted with a chicken distribution effort, and I visited many of the surrounding villages including Tierra Linda, San Jorge La Laguna, and El Barranco. The trip opened my eyes to the countless ways that MF helps the indigenous population. Not only do they provide organized programs like school sponsorship, micro-loans, onil stoves, and more, but they also tend to the urgent and specific needs of the people they serve... like the sad task of funding the purchase of a coffin. Their hearts open wide for the community and it is clear that they are beloved in return. I can hardly wait to return to Pana, and I will continue to support MF with shipments of donations and by spreading the word about this phenomenal organization.
The Rotary Club of Upper Arlington (Ohio) has been collaborating with Mayan Families Foundation for over a decade, and it has been a wonderful partnership. During that period UA Rotary and MFF have developed and now Mayan Families helps run the following in the rural highlands of Guatemala: two preschools, a middle school, a trade school (carpentry, sewing, computer skills), and water projects in several villages, plus much, much more. Mayan Families is a trusted partner in our work in Guatemala - we wouldn't have been able to undertake any of these projects without the leadership of MFF.

Our Rotary Club has been partnering with Mayan Families for the past 3 years, and out experience has been beyond my expectations. The organization is so well run and is fully integrated into the community it serves, so Mayan Families knows so much about the needs and is able to get us plugged in with truly impactful projects that are changing the lives of such needy people. We will continue to partner with Mayan Families because we know that they are so accountable for the projects we've implemented together.
Mayan families are making a difference in Panajachel region. They engage and hire indigenous Mayans to work with them and teach them to be self sufficient. We have partner with them for over 10 years.

I can’t say enough about the great works that Mayan Families is doing. They are working in one of the most impoverished areas of the world and work so efficiently to help the indigenous people of the area. I have all of the confidence in Erin and her team to employ our donations for the greatest needs in the most efficient manner.
Mayan Families has been instrumental in our work in remote Guatemala. Their partnership has allowed us to confidently and strategically make a difference for the indigenous groups in numerous small villages. The organization has pivoted well during the past few years in dealing with numerous challenges. The current leadership and staff are talented and committed to making the lives of so many in the region healthier and happier.
I've seen firsthand the impact Mayan Families makes in the lives of the people in the Mayan region of Guatemala. They are the real deal and literally are saving lives and improving lives for these people on a daily basis. I highly recommend supporting this organization if you have a heart for helping the people of Guatemala.
We have led and organized volunteer dental groups in Guatemala for many years. Over the years only one organization has stood out as the one that we will continue to work with, Mayan Families. They are honest, reliable and professional.

I have a long history with the country of Guatemala, dating back to 1990 when I spent two weeks traveling the country on a photographic assignment during the Guatemalan civil war. Years later my wife and I would adopt an infant boy from Guatemala and our connection with the country strengthened. Many trips to Guatemala and many photo assignments later I came across the non profit Mayan Families. I was scheduled to travel to Guatemala on a photo assignment for another non profit and knew I'd have some free time after the assignment was finished so I thought I might contact Mayan Families to see if they had a need for a volunteer photographer for a few days. They did and I traveled to their offices in Panajachel to help out as I could. The staff was very caring and devoted to the villages and people they serve and I was impressed with their professionalism and their "can do" attitude. Over the years I've worked with many non profits and I consider Mayan Families a wonderful non profit that works hard for those in need. Attached is a short video my wife made of a Mayan Families volunteer trip we made with our two teenage sons back in 2019 and a photo of me with some of the preschool children Mayan Families serves..
I've supported Mayan Families for nearly 15 years. The organization's work is near and dear to my heart as the mom of a daughter who was adopted from Guatemala. Through Mayan Families, I've sponsored a students' education, provided food and nutrition support, advanced leadership development for Indigenous staff, and more. I've visited Guatemala more than 20 times and feel a deep and abiding connection to the country, the Western Highlands (where Mayan Families' work is predominantly located), and to the organization and its beneficiaries. The Staff team and Board are top notch professionals who consistently look for ways to improve and deepen relationships, partnerships, and efficiencies. Mayan Families works "with" communities rather than "in" communities, recognizing the community's strengths and expertise and the need to ensure their voice and representation lead any and all projects and initiatives. Long-term sustainability and community development are at the core of Mayan Families' mission and vision. I'm very proud to be affiliated with this great NGO.
We have worked/partnered with Mayan Families for over 10 years on constructing pre-schools, opening a trade schools and many other humanitarian projects. Having been an officer with Rotary International, and currently Rotary Zone coordinator the current Mayan Families leadership team meet Rotary's highest standards and ethical conduct. A team of Rotarains will returning November 2021 for another major project
The staff at Mayan Families does an exceptional job of helping the families in their programs, whether it's educating young people, feeding families, or training people with marketable skills. Good organization with Erin and her staff in charge.
As a current board member and donor, and former on-site volunteer, I can strongly vouch for this organization. I have family history in Guatemala so have been visiting since I was three years old, and in 2014-2015 I made the leap to move there and work with Mayan Families as their Donor Relations Manager. I got to see first-hand the incredible difference that their programs make for local communities.
Under new leadership, Mayan Families has deepened its focus on the most sustainable programs -- education, nutrition and health, and economic development -- which I believe has made the organization even more impactful than before, with a strong emphasis on community-led initiatives and long-term change. I'm proud to serve as a board member and know that I will be involved in Mayan Families for years to come!
I volunteered with Mayan Families in 2019 to help them revamp a nutrition and health program, and now serve on their Board of Directors.
The work they do is: intentional - they make every decision carefully with Indigenous Mayan leaders, staff, children and families at the forefront of the conversation; transformational - they strive to prioritize the greatest needs of the community, even when these needs are harder to meet, to truly impact the communities they work with; and sustainable - every community-led program is designed around existing knowledge and resources so that the community leads the programs equally and become self-sufficient, offering long-term impact and generational transformation.
I couldn't recommend supporting a better nonprofit that does work in the areas of nutrition and health, education, and economic development. They are changing lives by empowering Mayan families.
I was a sponsor of a university student for several years before changes were made with the leadership and board of directors at Mayan Families. I found out that my monthly donations hadn’t been applied to my student’s tuition. Furthermore, a large donation I had earmarked specially for a mandatory school project he had needed had also not reached him. Around the same time, my student was “let go” from his position with Mayan Families. He had been employed with them for quite some time and this was his primary source of income. It resulted in financial strain which naturally affected his schooling and his family. I was so disappointed I hadn’t even been notified of this change by Mayan Families or given the opportunity to provide support to him during this difficult time. I have tried to reach out to Mayan Families to get him back on track and to find out more details. I have not been successful and have given up. I understand that he went months later to try to reconnect with me and regain sponsorship and was turned away. It is a shame that my relationship with this organization has left such a sour taste in my mouth. As a former director of a non-profit, I can’t imagine NOT supporting my clients and my donors—two main pieces to a successful non-profit organization. I’ve also tried to reach out to the new director for clarification on what happened to my student and to brainstorm any possible solutions. I never received a response. My student was a lovely person from what I could tell. His life had not been easy but he made it all the way to the university level and wanted to be a productive member of his community. Changes are sometimes needed in non-profits but I never thought that this organization would sacrifice the lives of real people in the process.
Review from Guidestar
I used to support students and families with Mayan Families until the U.S. board of directors took over the operations in Guatemala. In early 2018 under 'new management' they stopped paying the monthly tuition of two of my sponsored students (without my knowledge) and caused the oldest one to have to leave school and go to work as the family could not pay the tuition. I had already paid sponsorship fees for the entire year, so there was no reason for the org to not pay. When I finally found out in early 2019, I ended up having to pay the schools directly more than $300 of past due tuition for 2018 in order to get the students re-enrolled for school for 2019. The family was so embarrassed and upset about what had happened. Many other of our students also did not receive various donations sent in 2018 under the new board. NOW I sponsor all our students with FUNDAMAYA, which was the on-the-ground organization that provided all the support and assistance to the local people with love, care, and respect!
Mayan Families are located in Panajachel, Guatemala, and work to support and improve education opportunities for the local Mayan indigenous population. Family health and well being are also major areas of importance to Mayan Families. We have been proud donors of the student sponsorship program for several years, and can see first hand the joy and success of the children that are now able to attend school. Mayan Families are continuously working to improve their organizational and delivery systems to better serve clientele. We support and highly recommend the good works of Mayan Families.

The Tri Village Rotary Club along with my wife Julie and I, have supported the Mayan Families organization for a number of years. The recent restructuring led by their new leader, Erin Mooney has propelled them forward to new and better things. I have personally traveled to Guatemala five times previously, and look forward to spending a week there in November 2019 to support their efforts further.

This organization is based on a legacy of good work that should give it the foundation to move forward in a good way. That does not appear to be happening. I made numerous donations to this organization under the new leadership in 2018 after the MF board took control of all accounts. I discovered they had not been used as directed. The intended recipients had not received anything. I was there early 2019 and approached this org for an explanation That response was only to try and trash their previous partner. I've seen this disgusting video and report - both ignore significant facts that speak to their allegations (which they must know and still ignore seeming to prefer to try and make their previous partner look as bad as possible) and highlight their absolute lack of understanding of the community and culture. This organization talks about all the good they are going to do but spends an inordinate amount of time and money on questionable activities to fault their previous partner instead of getting on with it. They are destroying their own potential and harming the communities they claim to want to help.
I couldn't agree more with the post from GO_MAYANFAMILIES on 8/12/19. I've been involved with Mayan Families since 2010. Since then I've made 8 trips, including one last month when I had the opportunity to meet with Erin Mooney and the wonderful staff who have shepherded Mayan Families through the transition.
The transition itself did take some time, including time to catch up on past obligations, but I've never thought for a moment of walking away because there is no other organization better suited to continue the mission.
I'd like to encourage everyone to watch the attached video that was published a few days ago. In that video Erin provides her contact information for anyone who would like to request a copy of the report that outlines what happened, and most importantly explains what has been done and how the governance of Mayan Families today will ensure that nothing like what transpired will ever happen again.
For anyone still not sure what to believe, you don't need to take my word for it. Instead, get in touch with Erin and ask her about all of the other partner organizations who became affiliated with Mayan Families under the "old guard". You will find that virtually all of them chose to continue with the new Mayan Families, with new organizations approaching regularly saying they are so glad to see the new leadership and can't wait to partner.
For any donors who chose to wait this process out, I'd implore you to invest the time to get in touch with Erin and learn how Mayan Families is now in the best position ever to grow and continue to help the indigenous families around Lake Atitlan.
This organization went through a serious transformation after discovering years of poor financial dealings and unethical practices. The new organization(2019) is on the right path and is filing all updated US tax forms. I suggest that a potential donor read the report from four separate external parties into the previous leadership prior to believing some of the other comments. Sadly, as a long time donor, the deceit from the founders is heart breaking. Nevertheless, the next steps outlined in the improvement action report are on target.
Review from Guidestar
Please note that all positive reviews and awards date to prior to 2018.
Negative reports only after that date.
There is a reason for this: It is basically no longer the same charity. Let me explain all I found out as it is quite important.
Mayan Families USA was founded by an Australian woman living in Panajachel
It was created to allow USA donors to get a tax receipt when supporting the other foundation she registered in Guatemala: FundaMaya. All work in Guatemala was performed by FundaMaya and its indigenous staff. Donors to Mayan Families who visited the Guatemala charity and the children they sponsored were in fact visiting FundaMaya. The latter received funds from Mayan Families only for approved projects and upon presentation of receipts and documentation. Its administrative costs retained were 20%. I do not know what percentage Mayan Families USA was retaining on the money they received nor what was the salaries they paid their staff because no financial statements are on their page and the last tax return available to donors is 2015
At the end of 2017 Sharon was diagnosed with Cancer and had to return for treatment to Australia. A new board of directors at Mayan Famiies sent from the USA a director to take her place. Basically, Mayan Families, took over the running and finances of FundaMaya as of that date. This led to changes that created much discord and hurt feelings among the indigenous staff who saw its role diminished as MF wanted to run things in an entirely different manner than that established by Sharon Smart and had resulted in turning a project she started out of her own home, with her own funds, into one with a 3 million dollars a year in donations.
As an expatriate in Guatemala and the founder of another charity working in that country, I have nothing but admiration for the work done by FundaMaya. I have seen the significant positive difference it has made to the lives of indigenous communities around the lake of Atitlan. Sharon’s projects grew from school sponsorship for children, to the creation of several pre-schools, feeding programs for the elderly, building and repairing homes, vented stoves to prevent repiratory diseases, sewing and carpentry courses, a medical clinic and even animal protection. Her fundraising success was based on an intensive effort creating an ongoing relationship between donors and recipient via photos, letters and invitation to visit that always turned into a memorable experience. All donations were documented with photos of food baskets and school supplies delivered to smiling recipients.
In September of 2018, the Guatemala board of directors of FundaMaya decided that the changes imposed by Mayan Families were incompatible with their philiosophy and the fundamental role it gave its indigenous staff as well as the very respectful way it related to the indigenous communities and its leaders. Sharon Smart announced that FundaMaya would part from Mayan Families but would continue its work and receive its donations through a different partner: ACTION ALLIANCE INTERNATIONAL . She wished Mayan Families good luck on public media.
Mayan Families was not as civilised about the parting. FundaMaya was falsely accused of many things. There was a lot of misinformation and unsubstantiated accusations thrown around and sent to donors and when those accusations were proven to have been erroneous, there was not the integrity to publicly admit this to the donors and clear the names of the accused. Entirely false accusations based on superficial misinformation was made against the indigenous staff claiming it had accumulated unusual wealth resulted in their safety being at risk, but even when that was explained to the Mayan Family director in Panajachel and their accusasions proven invalid, no apology resulted.
Basically, Mayan Families would like the donors to think that they are running the same charity their donations have been supporting in the past but with new and better management. That is not true. FundaMaya has moved on and is no longer their partner. Mayan Families has established on the former home of FundaMaya its own still unregistered charity called Mayan Families. As a result of the parting, Mayan Families kept some of FundaMaya’s project to justify retaining all reserve funds destined to FundaMaya they would not part with. That is why some sponsors still fall under their umbrella and are complaining on this site. MF has been banned from the 2 community pre-schools they adopted as the community leaders to not like the way they want to run things. They do not want foreigners reigning over them. They are angry for having to be associated with MF instead of FundaMaya .
FundaMaya and its Guatemalan staff and directors opened their new headquarters in December and continue to operate its same projects with a philosophy that is different from that of its former partner. They believe that the indigenous should shape the policies and practices of the organization. they believe in focusing on the individual and the families. they know the sponsored students and their families personally, Sharon and her family attend every wedding, funeral and special events of the communities they support. The indigenous community considers FundaMaya as its own indigenous project. They like dealing with the indigenous staff rather overpaid expatriate staff at Mayan Families.
The unheard excessiveness of the salary ($60,000) paid by Mayan Families to its director resulted in my complaining about it on the facebook page and comparing it to the $22,000 paid Sharon. All who complained and found, like me, such posting removed and received a message advising them they were banned from the site. Mayan Families is presently staffed by a lot of expatriates paid high salaries and working illegally in Guatemala as none has work permits, including the director.
Like the many who now know that FundaMaya was the real worker behind Mayan Families, I have chosen to continue to support them.
I still haven't received the donation tax letter I requested from Mayan Families in December. It didn't use to be a problem. I used to get them every year. However, under the new leadership getting answers to emails is a challenge.
I have been donating, sponsoring several students, and volunteering with this organization since 2008. They have been wonderful to work with up until late 2017. There was a dramatic change of the board and a major shift how things were run. I paid for one student to study in 2018 that ended up dropping out of school because the school fees were never paid. I had been sponsoring this student for 8+ years. Donations paid for were never delivered to the families they were purchased to assist. There are so many questions and concerns about how this organization is being run. I have been told that the organization has lost their partner organization that is legally authorized to operate in Guatemala, so I am not sure how they are able to operate now. Maybe that is why there are problems.
This organization has been stellar in the past but under the new board in 2017 has started to ignore cultural issues and has become somewhat condescending towards the local population.
As a long time donor, the Mayan Families volunteer staff provides exceptional support and plans every detail of my community visits, making a memorable experience every summer I visit.
Thank you!!!!
Small, grass roots organization with a big heart. Such a beautiful group of people with the right mission - helping others help themselves. Our group has served with them for five years now and will definitely go back again.

This is most sincere group of people to work with who are truly building bridges between people who are in need and those who can help fulfill those needs. They give the full experience of not just writing a check, but also allowing you the experience to meet the people whom you are helping. And it is an honor to be part of the work. I trust Mayan Families and the work they do. I have fundraised thousands of dollars on their behalf and will continue to work with them to give even more. I have brought numerous people to work there and all have had positive experiences. From building a home for a family to fitting a child with a pair of shoes, it amazes me how they are able to find the needs and fulfill them. I recommend this nonprofit to any and everyone.
The staff at Mayan families were incredibly committed, kind and hardworking! I was continually blown away by how readily willing to help out in any way. MaryAnn families is top notch!
I have worked with Mayan Families since 2010...and it has been a great organization to work with. I have organized 15 family oriented service trips and Mayan Families is our host organization. The staff cares about those they serve and are always very helpful with our volunteers. I love returning to Guatemala and Mayan Families and sharing it with our team members! Thank you!
On my trip this year, I enjoyed every day with Mayan Families. They have great staff members that go out into the field with us and help with whatever we may need help with. They are great with our group and also with the Mayans that live at the houses we go visit. they have everything very well organized and if something isn't what it is supposed to be then they figure a way out to fix the problem. Throughout this week, the Mayan Families organization has been so beneficial and so nice that it makes me want to come down and work with them in the future!!
Mayan Families is a great organization that truly meets the needs of all the indigenous people of the area around Lake Atilan. I got to experience working with preschoolers, sponsored students, elderly feeding programs, installation of ONIL stove, handing out chickens and food baskets, and water filters to all age groups. The staff of Mayan Families welcomes you into their organization with open arms and smiles. Everyone should experience this great organization.
This charity Mayan Families is so unique. They have a very diverse staff and all of the people that I came into contact with were excited and motivated to help! The excitement there is contagious! Very upbeat! I know how hard and difficult this work can be. Always dealing with people from all over the place, showing them the foundation and the work they do. These people really do it, they are so lovely! I also appreciate their communications with me and their monitoring of their programs. They do an admirable job is evaluating what works and what does not. I am so impressed with Mayan Families!
Wow! All I can is I was a traveler before hand. I had done a few trips to work with Charities and I just want to say that this trip with Mayan Families was amazing and it changed my life forever! I know that sounds silly, but it is true! I am so happy that I did this trip with Mayan Families! Very well organized! The Volunteer Coordinators were great! We had very little down time which is what I like! We got to deal with so many families and visit different Mayan Families projects! Fantastic! I am so impressed! Very well run organization! Truly impressive!
Mayan Families is now my focus! I want to do more and this is the NGO that has earned my time and talents!
I have watched this charity grow and grow! It is truly amazing! They have a dedicated team that really perseveres with a challenging clientele. I am always impressed by the efforts of everyone at Mayan Families to do their best! Excellent attitude! Very welcoming!
We have been bringing groups to volunteer with Mayan Families since 2011 so we love working with them. I have visited several NGO's in Guatemala which all do wonderful work but I have found Mayan Families to be one of the best!
I visited Mayan Families (MF) not because I wanted to volunteer with a non-profit but because I’ve known its President/Founder, Dwight Poage, since we were in 8th grade. We quickly bonded, did all the stupid things kids do, and ended up being roommates until I got married and he went off traveling in the mid 80’s. I know this guy. When he’s with friends, he doesn’t talk much about the work he does. It took a trip to find out. First day there, Dwight throws us into the back of a truck to help deliver food to two MF facilities in neighboring villages. MF brings food to approximately 3,400 people daily. These are people who are in nutritional crisis (not knowing where the next meal is coming from.) 70% of the children they work with are chronically malnourished and their families live on less than $1.90 a day. We spent the week with Dwight as he toured us around while keeping all the plates spinning at MF. Dwight pointed out the heartbreaking signs of malnutrition in kids we’d see. Guatemala has some of the shortest people on earth because of chronic undernourishment. Being a friend for so long, I got to ask Dwight detailed questions about MF operations and finance.
If you wonder where your donation dollars go, MF put 80% of every donation dollar into its programs. The other 20% is what keeps the lights on, pays salaries and puts gas into the trucks that carry the food. MF employs about 150 people full time, paying a living wage and providing health care benefits. I’ve been to Dwight and Sharron’s home. It’s nice, but no one is living large on the MF staff, including the founders. All the other reviews will tell you how well organized volunteer trips are and how much fun they had. This review is to tell you how effective Mayan Families is and to assure you that your donations and time are well spent if making a difference is what you want to do.
I was blown away by the number of important programs this NGO is involved in. Preschools, clean water, meals for kids, meals for the elderly, medicines and wellness programs, occupational training, microloans, etc., etc. They impact so many people in their area, it is truly amazing and inspiring.
Absolutely amazing experience!!! Mayan Families was amazing to us and very good to the Mayan people! They do great work and really care about improving the lives of others! While we were there, we installed energy efficient stoves to improve the lives and health of the indigenous people in the community. I am honored that I got the chance to work with them and they are some of the most amazing and hard working people I have met! I would love to come back again and work with Mayan Families in the future and continue to help the great price of Guatemala!
This was my third time in Guatemala and working with Mayan Families in one year. Once again I had a great experience. One of the many reasons I continue to come back so frequently. I already have another trip scheduled for August of 2017. The staff at Mayan Families is very friendly and easy to work with. This trip, like my first was with my college Waukesha County Technical College. We annually take a group of healthcare students to work with Mayan Families and learn about the challenges facing the indigenous people of Guatemala, healthcare providers, and healthcare facilities. In addition to learning about all of the tremendous programs Mayan Families has to improve the lives of Guatemalans, we installed ONIL high efficiency wood burning stoves and SAWYER high efficiency water filters in peoples homes. This type of work has an immediate impact on the families respiratory health by diverting smoke out of the house via a chimney and GI health as their water is now free of bacteria and microorganisms. At one of the villages we served; a group of village women made us a traditional Guatemalan meal for lunch. The food was really good and abundant. This was an amazing act by the local women and it really showed their gratitude for the work we were doing in their village. These kind of experiences couldn't be possible for the average person if Mayan Families wasn't doing what they are doing. This can change your life. Not to mention Guatemala is a beautiful country, both in geography and it's inhabitants.

I have had the great pleasure of working with Mayan Families twice now. The first time was last January with my college. That trip completely changed my life and opened my eyes to the many issues facing the beautiful people of Guatemala. While working with Mayan Families the first time, I sponsored a child to go to school. This August, I took my 15 year old son to Panajachel and we worked with Mayan Families again. We installed some stoves, water filters and delivered food to a couple of pre-schools and the elderly feeding center in San Jorge where we also served the elderly. This trip had a profound effect on my son and reinforced my passion for helping the people of Guatemala. If it is at all possible, I highly recommend going to Panajachel and working with Mayan Families. They are a very transparent organization. When you make a donation to them, they show you where your money goes via pictures of your sponsor student or other donation recipient receiving their donation item. I sent our sponsor student a birthday gift, cake and food basket. The day after his birthday, I received a treasure trove of pictures of him and his mother at the Mayan Families head quarters receiving his gifts. I could go on and on and probably never say enough about Mayan Families and the work that they are doing for the indigenous people of Guatemala. My entire family will be returning to Panajachel in the summer of 2017 to do more great work with Mayan Families.
Last week was my first visit to Mayan Families in Pana. It was back to school week and the families were coming into pick up back to school supplies. The organization was amazing and the impact that sponsors make was clearly demonstrated.
The group I was with also had the opportunity to visit the pre-school in San Antonio, to deliver Pilas to 3 families and food baskets, toys and clothes to many more. The smiles, hugs and appreciation was overflowing from the recipients. Being able to not only sponsor a child but to have the opportunity to ask about a families needs and health and interact with the children provides so much joy.
We also had the opportunity to serve a meal and play bingo with the Elderly lunch program. The appreciation and hugs were overflowing.
I have worked with Mayan Families for over 8 years. They are outstanding in ministry, in trasnparency, and integrity. I would recommend them without question and look forward to future opportunities to be in ministry with them.
The Mayan Families organization is an amazing non profit that is helping to better the lives of the indigenous people who live in the Lake Atitlan area. I recently went on a mission trip with a group from the Community Church of Poway. We chose to install stoves, purchase and deliver beds and water filtration systems, work in the preschool at San Jorge, and feed lunch to seniors also in San Jorge. We always felt safe as we had guides, drivers, and interpreters who were with us. The accommodation and food were great. Many in our group were so touched that we are supporting students and the elderly through the Mayan Families scholarship program. We are starting to plan our 2017 mission trip. The humble, kind, Mayan people are so deserving of this help.
Our group of 12 participated in July 2016 with Mayan Families and ready to go back again. The projects kept us involved with the Mayan people and educated us on their needs. I believe that Mayan Families offers sustainable change with programs that they are not only involved in but help run the programs. A transformational change came about within us. It was a maiden voyage that bears repeating and can only encourage others to get involved. If you can't go see for yourself, please take our experience as proof that 1) they need your help, 2) all funds go for a multiple of needs that would not be met unless we were helping and 3) the programs Mayan Families implement are making a difference. Also....you can support with your pocket book - sponsor a child's education, an elder's support for food (there is no govt. programs), towards emergency medical care, toward trade schools, and a multitude of other programs. You won't regret getting involved with Mayan Families.
I traveled to Guatemala for the first time with a company called Serengetee. They are in a close partnership with Mayan Families, and I cannot begin to describe how amazing my experience was. It was so much more inspiring than I could have ever imagined and every life touched will forever have a place in my heart. Mayan Families is constantly looking to improve the lives of everyone in contact with them. With that, the volunteers gain a new sense of looking at the world.
I only worked with the Mayan Families for a brief amount of time, but in that time I was able to see the good that they did for the community. The amount of support they give with such little funding and the passionate employees they have allow for them to change lives. The experience itself was very enlightening and allowed to change the lives of some fellow humans in need.
I've worked with Mayan Families for 10 years. They are an incredible program! I recently got to visit the headquarters for two days. We toured two of the preschools. We also spend a day at the nutrition center in San Jorge, serving lunch to those in their Elder care program. It is truly incredible work they are doing in the area in and around Panajachel. I especially love that 90% of their staff are local indigenous members of the community they serve. They are truly living their mission!
I just returned from my second trip to Guatemala to volunteer with Mayan Families. I continue to be amazed at the great work they are all so committed to in a very impoverished area of the world. Education is a big part of what they do while helping to feed, shelter and heal the people of Guatemala. Everyone I have met is so committed to the people. I have met the student I sponsor through Mayan Families and I can truly see the difference MF has made in so many lives. I will continue to sponsor and volunteer for MF as they are making a difference in the world!
I visited Mayan Families in April 2016. I met many of the clients they serve at several of MF's facilities as well as in their homes. The staff was very accessible, very dedicated and very eager to get us involved in the program activities. I was impressed how much they rely on the locals at all levels of their work. As much as possible they provide local solutions to local needs. Their emphasis on and efforts toward transparency were impressive. The people they serve are beautiful and seem genuinely and extremely grateful for the needs that they meet.
I've had the pleasure of working with this excellent organization since it's inception. Often donors wonder about the true impact of their contribution. Not so with Miracles in Action where 100 percent of your donation goes directly to the cause. Overhead expenses are covered through special donations and handicraft sales. This is a rare, but highly effective business model. This charity creates substantive change in the communities it serves and I've been fortunate to see that firsthand. In an area faced with crushing poverty and limited opportunities, Miracles in Action is truly a blessing.

Mayan Families is amazing! I just returned from Guatemala and am very inspired by their work. We visited a preschool in an impoverished community called Chukmuk where malnutrition is rampant. Mayan Families provides these kids, many of whom suffer from stunted growth, with a nutritious meal and snack each day - likely the only food they will eat. The children also learn to speak Spanish so they will be ready when they start school. This early intervention in both their physical and mental development offers these children a much better future.
I've had the good fortune to volunteer with Mayan Families for many years. They are transparent and open to all with a heart to help. Thank you, Mayan Families, for allowing me to be a part of your great work!
Mayan Families is an incredible organization led by three hard working, dedicated individuals - Dwight, Sharon and Patti. We have been volunteering with them for over 10 years and continue to be impressed with how committed the staff are to the Mayan people. We trust the money we donate is used in the most effective manner and do not hesitate in the least to promote them. Bob & Pam
I went to Guatemala with my college on a Transcultural Healthcare Trip1/1/16-1/10/16. We worked with Mayan Families. I had no idea of what to expect as I have never done anything like this before in my life. Mayan Families were great! They explained everything that the organization is about and why they do what they do. They also were very clear in what we would do as a group of volunteers. We installed 12 Onil stoves in 3 different communities. We also had the opportunity to serve lunch to some of the elderly women of San Jorge. I was deeply touched by the entire experience working with Mayan Families. I felt a deep need to do more than what we as a group had just done; so I sponsored a child for the school year. I am planning a trip in late July to take my 15 year old son down to meet the child we sponsored who is 9 days older than my son. We will volunteer our time with Mayan Families again while there. I am also planning on going on the trip with school again next year during the winter break. I will tell anyone who will listen how great of an experience I had and would highly recommend people going and doing something for someone else and experience the wonderful feeling you get when you make a difference in someone's life.
Amazing charity. I spend 4 days with them and it was a spiritually uplifting experience. you can see immediately how your donations big and small are helping them accomplish their goals. I am looking forward to spending more time with them in Panajachel.
I went to go volunteer and saw the amazing differences they make in the community. It was truly an amazing experience to work with them and will continue to.
My Daughter (13) and I spent 2 days at Mayan Families distributing used shoes to those in need. These 2 days have changed our lives. During this time, we saw first hand the difference that Mayan Families have made in the lives of the indigenous people of the Lake Atitlan area. The passion and dedication of the entire staff was also apparent at all time. My daughter & I can't wait to go back :-))
This is an amazing nonprofit organization with hardworking, dedicated staff. As a trusted, reputable organization in Guatemala, Mayan Families makes visible, long-term impacts on impoverished communities. They work hard to curb extreme poverty through education primarily, but also nutritional and medical assistance, as well as community development and shelter programs. They have changed hundreds - if not thousands - of lives over the last few years and will likely continue to have an incredible impact in Guatemala.
My family and friends went down mid January to deliver shoes to those in Mayan families critical care group. The support we received from Mayan Families was heartwarming. Also, the staff was incredible helpful and we had an amazing time!
I really enjoyed working with this organization. Everyone was very passionate about what they were talking about and doing. They were all very friendly. The only unfortunate part was that my school was only there for 5 days working with them and the days were very busy which made it hard to process what I was seeing and experiencing. Besides that I am excited to continue working with them (now sponsoring a child) and hope to go back with my school next year.
I've been working with Mayan Families since 2008. Their consistent service and attention of goal setting, of educating, and of helping families succeed is remarkable. Since I go there and see first hand what is being accomplished through excellent management, targeted goals, and extremely hard working employees, I can say without reservation, Mayan Families is one of the best places to make a difference in this world.

My Children and I started working with Mayan Families in 2009 and have been back twice including this last summer for a month. One of the things that sets this organization apart from other good ones in the Lake Atitlan area is that they truly make use of the resources that are offered. They don't charge you to work for them and they operate on a shoestring (even for Guatemala) and work very hard. I have seen their growth from a relatively small NGO to being a Major Provider of services to those who have no safety net. They are forward thinking an their focus is on education. They start with the youngest, most at risk children and help them to be successful in school. Their primary purpose is to educate. To do this effectively the people they service need help with food, shelter, and health. They do their best to "teach a man to fish and feed them for a lifetime" but sometimes during the process help is needed to continue the process.
Another significant part of this organization is that two of the directors and most of the employees are indigenous and understand the culture and needs of the served population. This allows them to better monitor who really needs help, how they need help, and who is trying to play the system. Sharon, Dwight, and Patti have worked very hard to make their corner of the world a better place and to allow other who want to help and participate the means of doing so.
I couldn't possibly give enough stars to Mayan Families because "far exceeds expectations" does not even begin to explain how I feel about their ethos and efforts. I will continue to work with them for years to come and recommend to anyone I know who is willing to make a difference that they consider doing the same!
This is a simply wonderful organisation. We have visited many times and remain deeply impressed at the professionalism and compassion we see each trip. The programs save and change lives for the better in a sustainable way. No praise properly captures our opinion of Mayan Families, the staff and the volunteers.
My church has partnered with Mayan Families for several years. For the past two years, I have been on medical mission trips with the church and coordinated through Mayan Families. They are an awesome organization focused on healing, educating, feeding and housing the Mayan people in Guatemala. I am so impressed with the caliber of people in the Mayan Family organization and the life changing work that they do.
I have worked with this organization for four years bringing primary health care to remote villages around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. As in-country coordinators, they bring their cultural expertise in an effective manner to help my organization, Hands of Healing, bring medical, dental and vision services to the Mayan peoples who don't have access to basic health care due to extreme poverty.
Mayan Families prepares the communities for our arrival, coordinates with local residents to provide translators and ensure that we have an adequate venue to set up our temporary clinics.
We are truly indebted to Mayan Families for all of the work they do to enable us to serve the most deserving in Guatemala
We travel with a group mainly out of Florida called Hands of Healing, Inc. We are a interfaith medical mission team that has been on mission in Guatemala since 2005. We have used other organizations along the way and then for the past several years have gone exclusively with Mayan Families Organization. They are delightful to work with in the process of organizing our next trip, providing transportation and sometimes arranging hotels, etc. We always have a good turnout at our on site locations because the Mayan Family Organization is really trusted throughout the region (Panajachel) where we work.

Our medical mission group, Hands of Healing Medical Missions, travels from Florida in the US. We have worked several times over the years with Mayan Families. They have been such a great help and made our mission trips so much easier and organized. Those in their company are compassionate and so knowledgable about the families and villages they serve. Their programs for children, the elders and the community are incredible...frankly I don't know how they do all they do! Blessings to them!
Cindi
Amazing charity. just visited them. They're making a huge change one child at a time! Please give any time, donations, or prayers for this wonderful organization!
Mayan Families is quite impressive!!! For several years my mission team, Hands of Healing Guatemala, has relied on Mayan Families to help select the most needy communities to serve, transport all 25 of us, provide chairs and tables for use during our portable clinics, provide us lunch, and provide and arrange Spanish and Mayan translators. Each member of their team is knowledgeable about the communities we serve and they put our safety and our needs as top priority. When we are not in clinic, they offer opportunities to sponsor children and help with their education and needs. They arrange meetings with our sponsored children and are open to taking us places as time allows. We find everyone associated with Mayan Families dedicated, loyal, creative and most of all, compassionate to our Mayan brothers and sisters!! We are honored to have this partnership with them!!

I have had the honor of interacting with Mayan Families for just over a year. During this time I have a total of 10 days seeing first hand how well they live their purpose: giving a hand up to the Mayan people of the Lake Atitlan area of the Western Highlands. They are caring, well organized, creative and efficient. Without Mayan Families, our Hands Of Healing Guatemala Team ( Medical and Vision) could not
possibly be as effective. Their partnership directs where we go, transports us to and from the villages, find us a place to set up, registers our patients and provides us with Spanish and local K'iche'
and Kachiquel translators. They open our eyes to the great needs of our Mayan friends and encourage us to continue to help long after we are gone by sponsorships and any number of other ways! Their great and generous heart is in EVERYTHING they do. It is a privilege being in partnership with them as a medical team member and as a sponsor of a precious 8 year old Mayan student!!
I spent an amazing week with Mayan Families seeing first hand the wonderful work they are doing in Guatemala. The educational, economic, health, and home programs they operate not only sustain, but are making a life changing and in many instances life saving difference in the lives of the Guatemalan people. Wonderful organization with the most amazing people involved!
I spent several days traveling with the team from Mayan Families visiting preschools and homes in the towns around Panajachel. The trip was fantastic as I personally witnessed the work they do to bring a better way of life to the less fortunate in the area. I saw happy and healthy children due to the multivitamins and nourishment they received due to the support of Mayan Families. I also visited homes that had clean drinking water due to the supplied water filters and stoves to cook on that were also supplied by Mayan Families. Truly a very emotional experience and one that I will never forget.
We visited Mayan Families last week to view their preschools and nutrition program. We were highly impressed by the caliber of their work and their obvious dedication to their community. The staff is professional, kind, and talented. They have taken on a monumental task by choosing to take a holistic approach to building stronger communities, and they handle every challenge with a high level of skill and compassion.
The children and mothers we visited in the communities around the lake were confident, friendly, and obviously proud of their association with Mayan Families. To me, this is the strongest indicator of the success Mayan Families has found in its work.
We are proud to partner with Mayan Families, and look forward to continuing our relationship!
The Shuzz Foundation Team and I traveled to Guatemala from south FL for a 4 day trip to give new shoes to children in need. Partnering with Mayan Families was the BEST choice I could have made. We loved our guides Jackie and Hannah - they were very welcoming and helpful. The restaurant choices they chose were amazing! Sharon and Dwight, the founders of Mayan Families, took our team in like we were one of their own, showed us around their facility, gave us a real taste of Guatemalan culture. Sharon Smart has a heart of gold and I am lucky to have met her. The SHUZZ Foundation will definitely come back to Guatemala and work with Mayan Families again.
Mayan Families is a compassionate, well-organized, and hard-working organization. I recently had the opportunity to bring 14 college students to Panajachel to work with Mayan Families on Humanitarian Engineering initiatives and it was an exceptional experience for me and my students. Mayan Families' communication was wonderful and consistent, the accommodations and projects were great, and the educational and service opportunities where beneficial for all that were involved. We can't wait to work with Mayan Families again next year.
Mayan Families is great organization, doing great work for the Mayan families in the region of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. They helped make our project very effective. All the staff is highly professional, and at the same time friendly and compassionate. I hope to work with them again! Prof. Kevin Passino, Ohio State University
Mayan Famalies us an awesome organization that allows individuals to live an enriched life by offering medication, education and emotional support to the Mayan people . Professionals and volunteers can go to donate their time to lessen the suffering of others. It is highly recommended.
After watching the documentary Living On One, I decided to sponsor a student through Mayan Families. As a sponsor, I provide funds for many of her school supplies and needs as a one time yearly payment, but I think it can be done in installments, too. As a sponsor you can choose to do a full or half sponsorship of a child. I am kept up to date with photographs of my student receiving her school supplies, and with her report card. Of course it is not required, but you may choose to send donations specifically for other things the child or their family needs. Food, a water filter, a mattress, a birthday gift. You are given access to a written profile of the child and their family situation, which is updated as things change. Any time I send a donation I am shown photographs of my student and her family receiving the items, and hand written thank you letters that my sponsored child holds up proudly for the camera. These are eventually mailed to me. You can remain anonymous to the people you sponsor, or you can ask for and receive greater detail about their lives, and be available to help if they have a family emergency. It's entirely up to you.
As well as individual student sponsorships, you can donate toward specific families, elderly folks, children in crisis, people with medical needs, the animal rescue program, pre-school, vocational training, many many more programs! Or just give funds where needed most.
I appreciate the ability to verify that my sponsored child is indeed receiving the donations I am sending. Many individuals and groups visit in person and they are welcomed.
Mayan Families has given me the opportunity to make a real difference in a child's life.
I hope to donate some time as a volunteer soon, doing computer work over the internet.
AMAZING!!!!!
I volunteered with Mayan families for 5 weeks by myself. They hooked me up with a great homestay and helped me get to know the town. They were there for me since I got off the bus from Guatemala City. Mayan Families is made up of some great workers, expats from around the world and locals from around Guatemala. Everyone was nice and friendly. They seem to care about their work. And they are doing some pretty great work. I volunteered with the medical center translating and some set up work, and also in the carpentry trade school. By what I've seen, Mayan Families puts good use to their donations. I hihgly recommend them, and will be back as soon as I can. thank you mayan families!
A non-profit organization which helps the local families of Guatemala in many different aspects, including free school to kids, food supply to poor family and elderly, animal shelter, programs to help women making incomes, etc. I didn't know what it was like in Guatemala at all when I was just randomly doing research online for volunteering opportunities. I'm glad I did it. This organization is definitely making the positive impacts to the local families. I'm happy that I was part of them to make my own contributions. The trip shifted my perspective towards life.
Thank you to Mayan Families for an action-packed visit with multiple opportunities to see the people of the area, to better understand their needs, to learn about and install stoves and water filters, to meet the students and teachers in the pre-schools, and to learn more about the multitude of activities and services Mayan Families provides every day. Dwight, Sharon and the staff are such generous hosts with amazing hearts for service to others.
I have made four annual trips to Panajachel and worked with Mayan Families each year. I also sponsor both school kids and one Anciana or elderly woman. I am extremely impressed with the growth that I have seen from year to year in the infrastructure of the organization as well as the services they offer to the people (and animals) of Guatemala. Where I really see the final effect is in the families that I sponsor. The Mom's are learning Spanish and seeing the importance in having their kids educated. I LOVE the work that Mayan Families is doing to support these people. Thanks so much Sharon and Dwight!! Great job.

I have just completed my second week with this organization in the past year and have had great experiences each time. The support for the Mayan people and the support for those of us helping the Mayan people is amazing. I am sponsoring the education for three children through Mayan Families and I am assured that this organization is following up and watching. Sharon has helped me with ways to further support one of my students who was not doing well and is now successful with his education. All in all a very knowledgable and helpful group.
For the second year in a row I had an incredible experience working with Mayan Families. Their programs for the Mayan people are very wide ranging and assist all ages of Mayans. Last year I took the opportunity to sponsor a little girl in Tierra Linda. This year I was blessed with the support of my Rotary club and Mayan Families to actually work on her house to improve her living conditions. The Mayans are so appreciative of anything we can do for them which makes the effort all that more rewarding. The smiles and hugs we receive from them are priceless. I will continue to help them for as long as I am able and look forward to returning in the near future.
Mayan Families is an amazing nonprofit organization that helps the poor and in need natives in Guatemala. My time shared with them was one to remember. It's one thing to know that people around the world and poor and struggling with hunger, but it is a whole other story to actually witness it in person. During my volunteer work I had the opportunity to work with preschool children and also build stoves for the most needy in the mountains of Guatemala. It was the most rewarding feeling to see smiles on children and families faces every time I was near. They are so appreciative and love everything that you do for them. Building stoves was very touching and heartfelt. Some families even had tears in their eyes because a stove was something they never owned before. Guatemala was truly an amazing experience and I can’t wait to go back!
I volunteered with Mayan families through my nursing school. It was seriously one of the most rewarding and life changing opportunities I have experienced. All of the employees are well informed of the organizations mission and of the history of the villages. This nonprofit helps so many people in the community ranging from preschooler education to elderly care and meal preparation. I could not have asked for a better organization for my school to have partnered with for our trip. I really hope to have further involvement and contact with Mayan families.
I volunteered with Mayan Families as part of a healthcare focused college volunteer trip. We were given an orientation session where we learned about the organization and their focus areas. We were then able to volunteer our time with the local indigenous populations. Mayan Families organized our volunteer activities each day as well as some of our travel logistics. They did a fantastic job providing us with meaningful opportunities to connect with and help the local people. The professionalism, dedication, and passion of their staff is unmatched. Thank you Mayan Families!
I took a group of 17 high school students on a service trip with Mayan Families to install 10 Onil stoves and we had a most amazing time being hosted by the wonderfully attentive and thoughtful folks of Mayan Families! The staff is energized, lovely, and so thoughtful in organizing every facet of our trip and meeds. We felt like members of their family and became fast friends! We love their vision of bringing a comprehensive multi-plan to educate, care for, and empower the indigenous peoples of the Central Highlands. Our group and individuals caught the joy and vision of sponsoring young students, purchasing water filtration kits, and becoming partners with Sharon and Dwight and their phenomenal staff to deepen and expand our participation in other outreaches such as the family Christmas baskets and many other interesting and life changing endeavors! Thank you Mayan Families!!!
Mayan families is a well established and fast growing non-profit. But don't let this fool you, they have the reputation of a great organization for a reason. Not only do they continue to help so many people in need but also, the people that work for Mayan Families really make it what it is. Mayan Families promotes a group help mentality; continually working and thinking together towards the goal of helping those in need. This, in turn, makes for a very awesome and in-depth volunteering experience. An experience consisting of more than being just a tourist, skimming the surface of a town, and not knowing how to help. I highly recommend Mayan Families to anyone looking for a volunteering opportunity in Guatemala.
I sponsor 9 children with Mayan Families and have volunteered with them many times. The staff is great and the organization does so much to help the indigenous families around lake Atitlan. They have made a difference in so many peoples lives.
While working with Mayan Families this past month, I could not tell you properly how impressed I was with both the staff, and their ability to make things work for the benefit of these Mayan Families. They are truly a blessing. I worked in the classroom while the students were taken individually to test their Spanish skills. Working with them in the classroom was great, but doing volunteer database work made it come full circle. I was able to see and input the results from the different schools, and they floored me. I was overall impressed with the staff and the students.
We currently are sponsoring two students and helping their families through Mayan Families. We just came back from a 5 week trip to Guatemala where we also were able to do some volunteering with Mayan Families. It is an amazing organization helping many families and kids. Their many preschools in the areas around Lake Atitlan provide not only basic education, especially Spanish study. to ready the children for primary school but also a daily nutritional breakfast, followed by teeth brushing (we led a class this time at a preschool in the highlands and donated toothbrushes for 50+ children!) We visited our 2 sponsored families, seeing the living conditions of extreme poverty is an eye opener and helps us know that our relatively modest donations for a roof, stove, table, chairs, beds, are much needed and valued. This is an organization we are so happy to be involved with. They are also great in maintaining communication with us about the organization and our sponsored families. Thank you, Mayan Families! Lynn and Greg
What a blessing working with Mayan Families! My husband and I just returned from our volunteer mission trip Nov 2014. During our trip we encountered so many kind and compassionate people.
Mayan Families is truly changing the lives of the children and families of Panajachel. We were welcomed with open arms and warm hearts. We cannot wait for our next opportunity to volunteer with Mayan Families.
I was a volunteer physician with a group from the Anona Church in the Tampa area. We volunteered our time and efforts to the Mayan People in five different areas. I personally have never seen such abject poverty. I have also never seen a more caring group with whom to work.
The Mayans are the indigenous people of Guatemala who like the American Indian have had there land taken away by the more powerful. Unfortunately, for the Mayans there is no safety net and they live malnourished, sick, uneducated and in such crowded and unhygienic conditions that it begs the imagination. Hands of Healing recognizes that the most sustainable thing they can do is education, specifically teach the Spanish language, water purification, provide efficient wood burning stoves, and do their best to provide some basic medical care. They are accomplishing this every day.
Personally, I saw diseases of children for which I could do nothing and for which there are no alternatives except HOH and they as an organization are overwhelmed with specific medical problems while at the same time, they realize that resources can be better spent on public health or education. Tough choices. I feel confident that HOH spends its monies prudently and efficiently in its great attempt to "treat thy neighbor as you would your self"

We came to volunteer with Mayan Families as part of a Mission Trip. We installed stoves, worked in the pre-schools, organized a soccer game, and worked with elder care.
We were SO impressed with Mayan Families and everything they organized for us. Not only was it amazing to work so closely with the families and see a real impact we were having on their lives, but the Mayan Families staff was so friendly and helpful, it was wonderful getting to know them as well. They were very organized, planned everything for us, and we even had beautiful accommodations that they set up for us at a nice hotel, as well as got to go out for lots of great dinners with the Mayan Families staff.
My favorite parts were seeing our youth group having fun with the kids and youth from the area, playing soccer, catch, and just hanging out. The area is so beautiful, the people are real artisans and so kind, and Mayan Families was the best organization we have been on a mission trip with. I recommend them so highly!
I worked as an intern at Mayan Families for two months this summer and had the most rewarding and valuable experience of my life so far. I had visited Guatemala with a university group for one week in May and met with several nonprofit organizations across the country to find potential partners. Mayan Families stood out as well-organized and fast-growing. Throughout my entire internship there the staff was friendly and helpful. The organization runs numerous programs that very visibly help families living in poverty. Every native Guatemalan that I met appreciated the work that Mayan Families does in the region. They work very reliably and transparently when distributing donations. They truly do educate, feed, shelter, and heal.
We just returned after a 10 days working with Mayan Families. I, along with my daughter and nephew, have been volunteering with this great non-profit for the past 4 years. The focus of our volunteering has been to raise money for the purpose of installing stoves for indigenous families living around Lake Atitlan. The beauty of this particular program, and most of the programs run by Mayan Families, is the direct impact and immediate impact they have on the recipients. We love the fact that we see where the money we raised is going and that we literally have a hand in helping change the lives of people who truly need the help.
We continue to be impressed with Mayan Families' dedication to their motto to "Educate, Feed, Shelter, Feed" these wonderful people around Lake Atitlan.

This past weekend my daughter, nephew and I returned from a one week stay in Panajchel, Guatemala where we volunteeered with Mayan Families. Our focus this trip, our second year volunteering with Mayan Families, was to install stoves for 10 deserving Mayan families paid for with money that my nephew raised to support this very important effort. The beauty of installing stoves is that it has an immedate impact in transforming the health and well-being of each needy family who receives one. For us, the experience was magical and profoundly gratifying.
Generally, we can't say enough about the Mayan Families organization and the tireless efforts they make on behalf of the Mayan population around Lake Atitlan. The energy, love and care Sharon, Dwight and the entire MF crew give to enhance and change the lives of these lovely people is astounding. From educating, to feeding, to caring and building, they provide comprehensive support to the poor of the poor in Guatemala. We thank them for the opportunity to help.
We will be returning to Panajachel next year, with even more energy and resources than this year, with an eye to do our little part for those who work so hard and deserve so much.
I just got back from Guatemala after my third summer working with Mayan Families. During the year, I raise money from my community, and then go install fuel efficient, concrete stoves around Lake Atitlan. The stoves properly ventilate the smoke out of the home, avoiding the many health risks that come with an open fire. I have done numerous community service projects here in New York and in Tanzania. I can honestly say that Mayan Families is the most productive, organized nonprofit that I have ever worked for. What makes this particular organization unique, is that one really has a sense of exactly where his or her money is going. You raise the money to buy stoves, you go install the stoves. It is beautifully simple. I also can't say enough about the staff at Mayan Families. They have always been extremely kind, productive and helpful. I hope to have many more visits to Mayan Families in order to help the people of Lake Atitlan.
Mayan Families operates their charity in the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala. They work with Mayan people to improve the lives of the desperately poor. The projects include providing water filtration systems, building stoves that pipe smoke out of the home, providing children and elderly one hot meal a day, and operating preschools.
My experience with Mayan Families involved helping to build a stove for a family that was building wood fires on the floor of their home. This family had been abandoned by the father and the mother struggled to feed and cloth herself and her four children. The stove we built is fuel-efficient for wood burning and will improve the health of the family by piping the smoke out of the building, thus reducing eye and lung inflammation and illness.
Growing up in the U.S., this is a level of poverty I have never witnessed before. The work that Mayan Families does for the native people of Guatemala is critical and fundamental to improving the health and basic well-being of the Mayan people.
I spent several days volunteering with Mayan Families in July, 2014. Mayan Families is the perfect partner for visiting groups who want to make a difference in the lives of the people in the highlands of Guatemala. They know the greatest needs among families, and coordinate our projects. We built highly efficient cooking stoves, passed out shoes to many children, and visited our families we sponsor. They are also instrumental in providing medical and nutritional support to many impoverished families. I can't say enough good things about Mayan Families. They have a heart for these wonderful residents of Guatemala, and the things they have accomplished in 6-7 years is amazing.
I coordinated a trip for a group of our donors in February 2014. Everyone at Mayan Families was extremely helpful throughout the planning process and while our visit was taking place. Our group was so impressed by the lengths the Mayan Families team members were willing to go to accommodate our group's needs. Thank you to Sharon, Dwight, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sergio, and everyone else at Mayan Families for making this such a positive experience!
This is our third trip to Guatemala, and enjoyed working through Mayan Families, and seeing the greT work they do.
What a wonderful opportunity to help God's people. It is good to know that what is given for the Mayan families, goes to the people who need help. All the Mayan voluntees seem to love their roles and care about the Mayan people. They were so willing to do anything that we asked. It might be good to see the upper level school. We did spend a lot of time waiting for directions. Connie did a great job planning things for us to see. Sharon opening her home for us was wonderful. Thank you Hananna for all your help. It was a great experience.
I bring groups twice a yr. and am always so pleased with the work Mayan Families does here. I couldn't arrange these trips without all their help. My groups have sponsored over 70 students through Mayan Families to enable them to get an education along with helping the families with much needed food and clothing. We'll be back in Nov.

I have been working with Mayan Families for the last several yrs. and take groups down to Guatemala twice a yr. My groups have sponsored over 70 students in school and we are about to build our first house for a family in El Barranco. None of this would have been possible without Mayan Families. They help with hotels, transportation and all the work and home visits we do.Guatemala has been a blessing to my life and Mayan Families made that happen.
I am a dental hygiene student and had the opportunity to work with the Mayan Families on a mission trip through school. As I worked with the Mayan families I was extremely surprised with how many great things the Mayan families did for the people of Guatemala. They did a great job organizing our activities while we worked with the Guatemalans. They truly have a love for what they do and they are very compassionate about their work.
I am a dental hygiene student and a small group of dental hygiene and nursing students went to Guatemala and worked for a few days with the Mayan Families. I really enjoyed working with them and it was a great experience. This organization is doing amazing work for the Guatemala people. I was amazed at how organized they were and how much of a difference they are making for these families. I would love to work with them again!
I had the opportunity to bring 10 university students along with another professor to volunteer our health care services. It was truly a life altering experience. The experience we had with Mayan families far exceeded my expectations. It also gave us an opportunity to fact find and see what else we could do for Mayan families as we continue our relationship and plan on returning.
I am nursing student that had the privilege to work with Mayan Families. I am absolutely impressed at how much of an impact Mayan Families has already made amongst the population. The staff is full of such great and caring people -- each person made me feel welcome and I enjoyed working with each one of them. After working Mayan Families and seeing what a positive impact they've created for these families, public health nursing and working with indigenous populations has now become an interest as a possible career path.
The week of Jan. 11-19 I led a group of nursing students in a Service Learning Experience in Guatemala. The week my group of nursing and speech pathology students spent working in Panajachel with Mayan Families was life changing for us. Mayan Families was one of the 10 best experiences of my life and having the support of directors, Sharon and Dwight and all the dedicated, committed staff made our ability to work with the people of Panajachel and surrounding communities a daily privilege. The authentic caring and respect for the people of Guatemala by all the people associated with Mayan Families was humbling for us. My students had an incredible life altering experience that will impact them for years to come and all of that because of the selfless work that is done by every single person at Mayan Families. Our university plans on having a continued relationship with Mayan Families and we know that we are the lucky ones!!
I work in international education and helped coordinate a volunteer program through Mayan Families for our College of Nursing and Public Health. It is a regular function of my job to help coordinate such linkages and, at times, we've been disappointed in the agencies we've targeted. I honestly could not be more thrilled at what we found at Mayan Families... caring people who've grown their non-profit to effectively feed and service over 2500 community members.
I am so moved by what they do and so happy to be at, what I hope, is the start of a long relationship between our university and their programs.
As the President of Tri-Village Rotary in Columbus, Ohio (USA) I want to be accountable to our members, and our community donors, to make sure that our charitable donations are used in the best way possible. Mayan Families continues to amaze me with their staff and how every penny is maximized. I had the opportunity to visit Mayan Families in March of 2013 and again in November of 2013 and each time I visit I am more reassured that our money is going to the best possible group.
I visited the Mayan Families Foundation in Panajachel, Guatemala in November 2013 and was moved by the incredible need for the services provided by the organization, as well as the dedication of the staff and volunteers to fill that need. This is an organization that, I feel, makes the best use of donor's contributions in making a lasting impact on the lives of the children and adults it helps.
We visited Mayan Families this summer as part of our second trip to Guatemala. We have supported two students through Mayan Families for several years, and even before our visit, we viewed it as a wonderful organization which brings aid directly to impoverished families and which very directly helps improve their lives and the futures of their children. We were able to visit both the students we support, and we saw how connected Mayan Families is to the families they help and how aware they are of the needs of each one.
We also were privileged to volunteer in some of the pre-schools that Mayan Families operates around Lake Atitlan. It was a tremendous experience. The schools are exceptionally well run and provide great benefits to the poor children who attend them by both teaching them a preschool curriculum (including introducing them to Spanish, a second language for many of the children) and by feeding them nutritious meals. In addition, we brought some medical supplies with us, and we saw the invaluable medical services that Mayan Families provides at its main site. Many, many Guatemalan families lack any access to health care due to their poverty and Mayan Families works tirelessly to help them.
Mayan Families is a great, great organization, and we will continue to support them because we know how directly and effectively they benefit poor families in Guatemala.
Mike and Janet, Oakland, CA
Our last mission as Hands of Healing from Florida was Oct 18-26/13. We were amazed at all the Mayan Families do to help the Guatemalan people. They also made our mission easier as they made sure that our team was used in the best villages that needed the most care. It really did not matter what we needed they were there for us and the village. Many thanks to Amy and Vicki who really extended themselves to make our experience the best. I have travelled with this organization for more that 10 missions and will do so again. Nancy D
Visiting Mayan Families in Guatemala was my first "real" experience outside of the United States, and as an 18 year old high school student the usual culture shock and humbling was immense. And though I was shocked by the poverty, malnutrition, and lack of resources, I came to realize that both the Mayan Families organization and the people of Guatemala were some of the kindest and most welcoming people I've ever encountered. During my entire visit I was guided and taught hands on by the Volunteers of the organization, and had the chance to see first hand how the organization is able to help the much needed people. It was an extremely rewarding experience and believe fully that this chance I had has taught me more than years in general schooling.
Going to Panajachel with Hands of Healing Guatemala to work with Mayan Families was the best experience I have had since I was a youth doing local missions with my church. I can't wait to return next year.
I participate with the Group Global Hands of Healing in conjunction with Mayan Families in Panahachel, Guatemala. It was a wonderful experience. I was so impressed with both organizations and hope to particplate again. Sharon and Dwight at Mayan families do so much to help the families of that area. I am amazed at their commitment and their organization of their headquarters. I encourage everyone to look into the work they do. It is grassroots and hands on all the way that includes many young volunteers and workers. The dedication that I saw toward those they help was really inspiring. Thank you so much for the time I spent and I hope to return. it was a life changing experience.
I spent 3 weeks Volunteering at Mayan Families with my partner Ben. We had such a fulfilling experience. It was wonderful working as a part of such a large team where the work is very grass roots and raw. I am a REgistered Midwife in Australia and felt my skills were utilised during my time with Mayan Families. We have treasured memories and hope to one day return and do some further work with this organisation!

My partner and I spent 3 weeks volunteering with Mayan Families last month. I am a Registered Midwife from Australia. I felt Mayan Families were very accommodating and wanted to put my skills in health to use during our short stay at Lake Atitlan. Sharon and the team organised visits to Preschools in the surrounding communities to present to the mothers regarding maternal and women's health. Mayan Families is a very warm and welcoming organisation which i felt privileged to be a part of the team in August 2013. My partner and I are already planning a return trip!
I feel privileged to have volunteered with Mayan families. It's such a unique organisation as it focuses on empowering the local Guatemalan people to make changes within their community. I can't wait to return next year to see how their programs have developed.

My partner and I volunteered at Mayan Families for the previous 3 weeks. It was such a enriching and positive experience working alongside Sharon, Dwight and all the staff. This organisation is completely in touch with the needs of the Panajachel community and provide services and support of the highest standard. I saw first hand how important donations are for this continued support. We are already planning our trip back to support this wonderful organisation.
I spent a month volunteering with Mayan families in Panajachel this summer. Mayan families gave me the incredible opportunity to work with Dr. Louis De Peña in the clinic at the Mayan families compound.
For a pre-med student like me this was a great learning experience. The staff at Mayan families all tried to ensure that I had the best experience possible and were very accommodating and friendly.
All of Panajachel knows about Mayan families, and that is for a good reason. Mayan families has helped improve several important resources in the area: health care, education, job opportunities, etc. They make a difference in the lives of many people in and around Panajachel.
Mayan Families has the most holistic and comprehensive program that I have experienced in Guatemala! Their programs are benefitting thousands in need, yet they somehow manage to personalize the attention given to each and every family they serve. My wife and I are so pleased to sponsor a child through Mayan Families, we get regular updates on her, and we have absolute confidence that our contributions are directly benefitting our child and her family. One of the most genuine organizations I have ever encountered and worked with in service to God's people.

We are a Florida-based medical, dental and vision mission team. We have partnered with Mayan Families on numerous occasions. Mayan Families coordinates sites for our clinics and provides translators and staff. We've had the opportunity to experience the substantial difference that Mayan Families is making in Guatemala and they are the real deal! Their holistic approach to improving impoverished lives is nothing short of miraculous.
My daughter and I volunteered with Mayan Families in the summer of 2013. Day after day we'd find our way to our carefully created service positions amidst many dozens of other volunteers and staff who all interacted in a delicately choreographed yet powerful improvisational dance. I absolutely loved the sense of well organized community and genuine heart-centered warmth. Amidst the sometimes accelerated chaos and dire need of the beloved population of Mayan families, the organization, Mayan Families, generated practical services for people of all ages in soulful ways that were sourced by community members. The services I saw rendered were mostly facilitated by local people, who worked in the kitchen, the pre-schools, the many offices and the grounds. Some people, like myself (a psychotherapist), came in from the exterior to help with medical and other professional needs.
Mayan Families gives volunteers the opportunity to experience first hand the diversity of the Lake Atitlan region, while working with an organization that strives to alleviate poverty, hunger, and elevate the quality of lives and animals together. It's a unique experience because while the organization is relatively small, its reach is wide and gives volunteers the opportunity to truly make an impact.
I spent a month with Mayan Families and each person I encountered was helpful and passionate about the work of the organization. Everyone is extremely generous and volunteering is an especially valuable opportunity for those interested in working or living abroad.
The Mayan Families Foundation and Mayan clients have welcomed me twice, and throughout both
experiences I have learned so much more than I hoped to give. That said, Mayan Families was so attentive to me and all other volunteers during the two months I visited(summer '13). We were given opportunities to contribute our skills to work with MF clients under the guidance of MF staff. I worked with a midwife who was volunteering for several weeks. MF's professional staff provided support by organizing trips to each of the preschools it has founded for pregnancy health workshops with the mothers of the preschool children. The organization has developed such trust with clients, which was apparent in how safe the women felt to discuss intimate women's health issues. The genuine gratitude and kindness women expressed after pregnancy health workshops well surpassed what I've seen from MF's clients, which is so surprising because these are women who are already so grateful and kind. The last time I was with MF's, I worked in their many preschools. For the children, these preschools are safe havens for learning and play. I often consider how their early experience in MF's Preschool and Nutritional Centers will give them an incredible head-start to pursue their happiness as they get older. For the mother's of the children, the extra time they have while their kids are in childcare is much needed, well-deserved and can go to the many duties they have as mothers. I also had the privilege to work with Dr. de Pena in the MF’s clinic. Dr. de Pena's work is indispensable, with an impact that goes largely unrecognized and is far-reaching. I once remarked that he "could do it all," and I meant that. MF’s is fortunate to have someone serving their clients in their many health needs. He is also an asset as an educator willing to share his experience. His down-to-earth manner makes him relatable and popular among clients. MF's clients are truly in good hands while in Dr. de Pena's clinic.
To conclude, MF’s is committed to supporting volunteers and does it ALL for their clients, with passion you’d have to travel the whole world over to find. The founders are the most selfless people I have ever met. This organization transforms the lives of all fortunate to encounter Mayan Families. Thank you!
As founder of a humanitarian charity in the travel industry, I have seen a lot of NGO's in many different countries. Mayan Families has the most substantive programs and committed personnel I have ever seen. Not only is the location drop dead gorgeous on the banks of Lake Atitlan, the projects are varied to any traveler's interest, sponsorship's for "ancianos", children or schools, water programs, stoves, vocational training, micro-loans and even animal programs. What really impressed me was that the staff is so committed and structures visits so each participant can see the impact of their support, and meet the individuals involved. This is exactly what we are looking for with Airline Ambassadors and why we plan to work with Mayan Families to coordinate our Guatemala programs. I would recommend Mayan Families to anyone who wants to "Travel and Make a Difference"
We were in country from July 1 thru 13th and worked with Mayan Families all of the areas that this organization gives the families of Guatemala hope for a better life. We look forward to working with them in the future.
I originally donated to help a baby see a doctor. After reading some of the blogs, I then sponsored a child to attend school. Learning more about his family and the struggle they endure on a daily basis, I then provided food for the family on a monthly basis. I am confident the services they provide to the young and old make a significant difference in the lives of many. I highly recommend Mayan Families to anyone wishing to donate to a charity. Your donation will go to work immediately.
After treating Mayans for 5 years for their dental disease and organizing the dental missions with my wife and family ,we discovered Mayanfamiles.org.. What an amazing organization with such compassion and commitment to helping mankind. Sharon and Dwight have dedicated their lives to aiding the Mayan people of Guatemala.
Their aid in organizing our team of Dental and Ophthalmology healthcare providers was so helpful and professional making our trip our best yet. We will definitely partner with Mayanfamilies in all of our future trips to Guatemala.
Mayan Families is an EXCELLENT organization. They are helping soo many people through such diversified aspects. From running pre-schools, providing older children with school supplies, shoes, and necessities, feeding the elderly, providing knowledge through trade schools, and even building houses for families. They even have a medical clinic and the price is very very reasonable since most medications are donated.
You can really connect with your sponsored family or child by visiting them, sending them items through the mail, or by purchasing them through www.Mayanfamilies.org. You can provide your child a birthday cake, a holiday tamale basket, or a shovel for a dad, or buy 100lb of corn or beans for a family .....once again, very reasonably priced!
They have to ability to skype with your student, if they come to the office, and they are very good at sending pictures of their progress or posting them on their Picasa web site!
I am very happy I found this organization. They are changing lives there!

I contacted Mayan families for help with a specific family in Guatemala. Although they were two hours away from the office, they had the entire family there and had received medical care within 24 hours! I could not believe how fast, sincere, and helpful they were. They gave me several options for my donation and I felt 100% happy. I am so glad I found them and I will continue to donate through them!
The group with Mayan Families is amazing! I am amazed with Sharon and Dwight and their huge hearts and wisdom which continue making a difference in so many lives! It extends with Dr. Luis of Mayan Families as well as the dedicated drivers and translators and organizers like Sara, Delia and Michelle! My husband, 2 daughters and myself already miss being in Pana to work aside these people and many more. We visited homes, schools, fixed a roof, worked in the woodshop, and most importantly gained some relationships with many whose paths we crossed. An experience my family will never forget and we definitely are wanting to return!
I volunteered as part of a group from Nashville, TN in May, 2013. Our group visited schools, families in different villages, and did some construction in 2 different homes. I am most impressed by how much Mayan Famalies does in these communities. They educate, feed , shelter, heal, and even take care of animals roaming the town without homes. I feel they have the right formula for what they are doing in Guatemala. Their growth is proof that they are really committed to their work. After meeting the founders and learning about their work there, I am very excited about my personal sponsorship that I will begin immediately. I also look forward to returning to see the families and to volunteer in some capacity with Mayan Families.
Excellent organization with real heart! Mayan Families works with the most poverty stricken children and families. It is amazing the work they do with so little resources! The staff and other volunteers were remarkable! I am inspired and you will be too! Great organization!
I volunteered as a translator for them and went on the weekly pre-school food drops, as well as translated student letters to their sponsors. The staff there is wonderful, and the medical clinic is a true gift to the community.
My family and I just returned from a trip to Guatemala highlighted by a day of service with Mayan Families. My men's group here in San Diego helps to financially sponsor three different boys through the organization - we were able to meet and visit with two of the three families as well as install a stove (that we purchased) for another needy family. The experience was amazing particularly for our teenage kids. The staff was particularly helpful and dedicated. Thanks for a day we will never forget!
I have been sponsoring a little girl and her family in Guatemala for 4 years, whoever I give, I get a letter or see pictures. The work this group is doing is fabulous!!!!!
I volunteered with Mayan Families for two weeks during the Summer of 2011. It was a wonderful and fulfilling experience. My only regret is that I could not have spent longer in Panajachel with Mayan Families. While there, I was a part of their medical and dental clinics for many different villages, and I also came home with a beautiful puppy that they had rescued through their animal welfare program. She is the most loving, loyal pup I could've asked for. I hope one day to return to Panajachel to work with Mayan Families again!
It is my pleasure to have spent one month out of two years volunteering for Mayan Families. Their staff is very capable, and helpful, and they all serve to work toward one goal: To provide food, education, clothing, health care, and just about any service they can provide to help the poor people around the mountains and Lake Attitlan in the Panajachel, Guatemala area. I saw first hand children getting fit with shoes that they badly needed. I saw children being educated in a clean, joyful, healthful setting. I saw food being delivered to needy families. I saw the Doctor who works at the main site who takes care of health issues. I saw little ones getting flouride treatments and new toothbrushes. I saw teachers who were interested in helping young children learn to appreciate books. Their staff is well organized, helpful, friendly, and care a lot about helping people. You couldn't ask for a better staff.
Mayan Families are a great organization. They approach issues of poverty by attacking them at the root, though livelihoods and education. This is in contrast to many other organizations, who treat symptoms without changing the cycle of poverty. They are also great at engaging donors and having a clear mission.
I work in the NGO field and can say that Mayan Families is a model organization. I will continue to donate to them and promote their causes!
It was a great reassurance to me when I was able meet my real live sponsored student when I had the recent opportunity to visit. The meeting was deeply touching for both of us. Education is the way out of poverty for these young people and our donations have a dramatic impact.
We have been supporting Mayan families for the past few year. We had been looking for an organization to support in the country for a few years. When we found out about Mayan Families and researched the work they do we knew we found the right fit for our family. All the community outreach and education they do is phenomenal.
I have been donating to Mayan Families for several years and am thrilled with all they do to help people in Guatemala
I have visited the Mayan Families organization in Guatelama for the past 3 years and will be returning again this fall. While there I have observed how this worthy organization is run. The in-house staff is well versed with not only the needs of the families they serve but the needs of the entire area. I have also traveled to many of the local schools that they have started and seen first hand the work that has been done with these young children that would otherwise not even receive basic skills. It is truly a heartwarming experience to not only visit, but be a part of this fine group of people who care for the less fortunate of Guatemala.
I have known Mayan Families a year after they started, when I came to Panajachel, at Lake Atitlan Guatemala, seven years ago. This was in 2006. I am simply amazed at the difference they have made in our small town, and every day you can see the huge difference they have made. There is no mistaking the changes that have taken place in the many villages around Lake Atitlan, all with the mark of Mayan Families. This is all due to the good-hearted, dedicated people that work with Mayan Families, the many volunteers, and the wonderful indigenous peoples that participate in the programs. I love living here now because of these changes, and I am so grateful that I can participate in them, too. Gratefulness on both sides counts!
The difference we see in the families, now with access to medical care, health & education, elder care, workshops, sewing and trade school programs, Mothers Day Baskets, Christmas baskets, Onil stoves, water filters, street dogs, street cleanup and recycling, micro-loans, savings accounts, women's empowerment, orphan care and more: just about anything that needs doing, Mayan Families has a hand in doing it.
It has grown from Sharon Smart & her husband Dwight working out of their own home to take in stray dogs and homeless children, to a very large group of fantastic volunteers and staff in Panajachel, where practically every cent goes to help so many. I think Mayan Families helped put more than 2,000 students through school. And they provide scholarships, shoes, books, supplies, pencils, paper, backpacks and more. No stone is left unturned to help these children who will be able to bring their families into the world of "reading and writing" and out of the third world suffering and poverty they have lived in for so long.
Education, Encouragement and Enabling are the key words here, and "enabling" in the best sense of the word, to help bring about a world that blends the indigenous culture with the modern challenges we all now face. It's a bridge here that people want to cross, and Mayan Families helps them do it.
Along with educational scholarships, I love the fact that they have started JOB TRAINING PROGRAMS that can be used here at home and are opening up international markets for the indigenous artisans around Lake Atitlan. The whole world is beginning to be at their fingertips, and it's a great doorway to "the other side." Along with the many medical missions and educational programs coordinated by Mayan Families, they are a hotbed of productivity & activity!
We need more people and groups in the world like Mayan Families... they are a role model for us all! I do all I can to help the good people at Mayan Families, and I hope you do too!
I have been donating to Mayan Families for the last 5 years and I love it! The more I learn about solidarity work, the more I appreciate the well-rounded work that Mayan Families does. They understand that it's not only about health, but also education and micro-loans and elderly care and nutrition and so much more!
I was very impressed by my visit to Mayan Families a few days ago. The organization compound in Panahachel is really impressive, with a happy bustling feeling of activity, friendliness, meaningful projects and super intelligent and friendly staff and volunteers everywhere. My teenage kids participated for one morning in the preschool flouridation program - it was very well run and clearly this program is desparately needed. This organization deserves accolades...and ongoing, substantial support. Bravo!
Have spent time during the last 3 years with Mayan Families in Panajachel. An awesome group who know the area well, use their money wisely and touch many many lives. Looking forward to being with them again. Barb Buss

I was blessed to have been able to spend time working with Sharon and Patty of Mayan Families just 2 weeks ago in Panajachel. We were able to visit several of their elderly clients in their homes, do a small medical clinic for the elderly and visit families recieving homes through their program. To watch Sharon interact with the local people and the respect she has for them, and the respect they have for the program was very rewarding. This is indeed a program that is working at the grass roots of the community. Mayan Families uses locals to oversee the work, make contacts. It is not a program that comes in , tells the people what to do, then leaves, only to oversee from a distance. They are awesome !!

I love Mayan Families...because of what they do for my group up in Patanatic.
When any is sick they provide a doctor... Recently one of our kids was diagnosed with a type of Down Syndrome..MF arranged for this little one to get physical therapy -- now with that help this child who has been carried in her mother's arms..has been given special shoes and is Cruising...We thought that she would need to be "patterned" but no she is holding on to stuff and trying to move around upright...Gracias Mayan Families..This is a big victory..
Dwight and Sharon run a top-notch organization. It's amazing to see it in action as so much gets done with a small staff. Can't say enough good things about them.

It was my pleasure to work at Mayan Families during the month of Feb. It is a wonderful organization that serves many needy families. I was able to input "thank you's" to the many sponsors that help support children so they are able to attend school. It was very rewarding to see some of the very heartfelt notes. The staff is very welcoming and I plan to volunteer there again next year when we return.
This charity squeezes value out of every dollar or item donated and every person who volunteers. I have participated in several of their activities and have seen no waste or padding on the part of the directors. Their preschools are modern and as well equipped as their funds allow, and each child gets nutritious
food each day. They provide food baskets at various holiday times, with volunteers filling the baskets destined for needy families. They make sure hundreds of students have what they need to attend school, such as supplies, backpacks and shoes. They take the time to screen each recipient of their charity so that the help given matches the need. It is an outstanding operation!

This charity really walks the walk. Dwight, Sharon and Patti, who run the charity are onsite, listen to people's requests and never turn anyone away from the doors of their facility. In this impoverished country, the needs are huge, but Mayan Families does yeoman duty in addressing as many needs as they possibly can. In one day, I have seen them give shoes to a child who has none, chaperone a group of doctors doing a medical clinic, take in a stray dog, and drive a load of donated books to a school, and supervise a feeding program. That level of activity goes on day after day. They are tireless and selfless in their mission to make the lives of Guatemalan families better.
Mayan Families is a fantastic organization and I just am always amazed at the huge amount of work they do! For just $30 a month I Sponsor a student and I am so thrilled at their progress! I also help in an advisory role. Go to Guatemala and volunteer, it will put life into prospective! This organization makes generational differences in the lives of the rural poor in Guatemala!
January was my first time to Guatamela and the Mayan Families organization and I can't tell you how life changing this experience was. I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster the whole week I was there. My heart went out to the people of Panajachel after observing the struggles they encounter to just survive on a daily basis. I couldn't get over how organized and structured the Mayan Families were and the help and hope they give these wonderful people. It was so obvious how devoted this organization is to help the people help themselves.
I am now sponsoring a child and an elderly person and I know that every donation I give goes exactly where I want it to go. And for this I am so very thankful to the Mayan Families because without them this would not be possible. Like I said it was an emotional rollercoaster ride, but it was the best ride of my life and I will be definitely be back next January.
WE visited a preschool , visited two ancianos, and then helped feed people at a kitchen that fed the elderly. We helped a woman with 7 children by replacing her stove. The old stove was filling her kitchen space with black soot and causing her children to have bronchial problems. We helped observe a more established school receive a big screen T.V., computers (current), copier and various screens for school room use. There are a lot of good people helping with SO many good programs........We spent a lot of time visiting and learning about the organization. We hope to get support from back home for future solar power programs being talked about . Exciting find, we just dropped in and asked what they were doing.........
Mayan Families is now a fast growing organisation and a place where you can genuinely make a difference. Part by part, volounteers are building a better community and bettering Mayan Families. It is an exciting place to be, friendly staff and well organised. I thoroughly enjoyed the month I spent working with Mayan Families.
What a wonderful organization. In one morning we installed Onil stoves in the homes of four very grateful Mayan families. We were also introduced to the NGO's student sponsorship program. For only $20 a month, one can (and several of us did!) provide the resources for a child to attend school for one year: registration fee, uniform, necessary supplies, school shoes, and tennis shoes. Contact with the child can be maintained at mayanfamilies.org. Countless opportunities exist for improving the living conditions of people in the Panajachel area through this nonprofit. Spanish-speaking volunteers are always needed. Why not give it a try?
Mayan Families is an incredible charity run by some of the most caring and selfless people I have ever met. A group of us worked with them while on a service trip this past fall and it was an amazing and humbling experience. We installed ONIL stoves, passed out egg laying chickens and food baskets, spent time at 2 preschools and helped complete a house for a very needy family. Everyone we worked with at Mayan Families was wonderful. I am looking forward to returning to Guatemala and working with them again!
I absolutely loved my trip to Guatemala. Mayan Families made the time enjoyable and life changing. They made sure that we had transportation and days full of things to do and see. I was nervous because I didn't know anyone in the group and met everyone there. They made me feel welcome and needed! I can't wait to go back next year!
I was a photographer for Mayan Families this past fall. I was only there for a short period of time, but it was a great experience. Mayan Families is a phenomenal organization that does a lot of good work for Mayan people. I documented their food runs and eye care program. We went to small remote villages and optometrists from the States checked individuals eyesight and gave those in need free glasses fixed to their vision. I myself even got a sweet pair of sunglasses. It was a great journey and Mayan Families is certainly a fantastic organization.
I became aware of and involved with Mayan Families as a part of a trip to Guatemala in October/November 2012. This charity has the focus, dedication and intellectual resources to bring about real change in the lives of Guatemalans. The leadership has courage and vision and are culturally aware and sensitive. Monies donated to the charity can be specifically allocated to individuals, families and or projects and evidence of appropriate stewardship of the resources donated is very evident. I am proud and happy to be a sponsor of a child for this organization. I will return in 2013 in hopes of offering additional service to this great organization.
We just got back from a great service trip we took to Panajachel the week of Thanksgiving. We worked with Mayan Families and their tremendous staff during this week and were once again very happy with both the work they lined up for us and assisted with and the work they do tirelessly when teams like ours are not there helping. We installed ONIL Stoves, helped with chicken donations (egg laying), feeding programs for the elderly, working in their pre-schools, and construction for a new home for one of Mayan Families clients. Really can't say enough about how good the staff was pretty well top to bottom to work with and our hosts were tremendous. I'd encourage anyone thinking about doing service work in the Pana area (and beyond) to contact the folks @ Mayan Families. They are so well connected in the community and respected by all who come in contact them. If your travels don't take you to Guatemala - think about donating to this group - your money will be very well used in a place that the needs seem endless.
I volunteered at Mayan Families for a month and it was a great time. The people there are amazing and make you feel like family. In my short time there, I was able to travel around Lake Atitlan and see the beauty of the lake, volcanoes, and culture they have. But I was able to see even more beauty in the lives of the families and especially the children that have been changed forever because of Mayan Families and their volunteers. I hope to go back within the next year or two and stay for much longer!
We are happy to have the opportunity to sponsor a young student through Mayan Families. Our donation allows her family to be able to send her to school without worrying about the associated costs. We are looking forward to sponsoring her younger siblings as they reach school age. We send additional funds to provide things for the family from time to time. Mayan Families makes it extremely easy to donate to your sponsored students and their families. The founders and staff of Mayan Families are quick to respond to emails. I researched a number of organizations prior to deciding which one we would sponsor a student through. I believe that I made the correct decision by working with Mayan Families. I am looking forward to visiting Guatemala and being able to volunteer with Mayan Families in the future.
Through Mayan Families I have been able to sponsor a little girl in Guatemala to go to school and send her gifts. I sent her a bicycle one year for her birthday and she was very happy. Some years I send her a cake on her birthday and I know this makes her feel special. I often send money for food. Through Mayan Families she sends me pictures that she draws for me and she calls me her Godmother. I am encouraged to carry on when times get tough, because I remember my Godchild needs me. I have a child adopted from Guatemala, too. This is my way of giving back.

Mayan Families is a wonderful charity. They regularly send me updates and photos of my sponsored child. I am able to help send her to school and help the family in many ways. Through Mayan Families I was able to provide a stove and a water filter for the family of my sponsored child. I am very satisfied and pleased with the work that Myan Families does. It feels good to be able to be a God send to my sponsored child. She refers to me as her God Mother. I am very happy and thankful for this charity.

Sharon, Dwight and Patty (founders Mayan Families) are fantastic loving people giving their lives to improving conditions of the least fortunate people in the central Guatemala highlands. Every day brings some form of a crisis to their doors. Every day they and their fantastic care givers provide open arm support, under the most stressful situations, unconditionally. I consider this group to be outstanding heroes and without reservation recommend them as true honest sharing humanitarians. We all can do more to give back and Mayan Families is on the ground where our money and support is not wasted. I feel privileged to know them and be a small part of the great things they do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 12 months each year. Thank you Wayne Skogman and Judy Harvey ( Friend, donor and volunteers ).

In 2009, my wife and i meet with two organizations in Guatemala. From that time we started a charity (Be one to help foundation of Alberta) and planned a trip for January 2010. Working with Mayan Families we assembled a 20 foot trailer, a full sized ambulance and our small truck. On January 1, 2010, myself and three sons left for Guatemala. The Ambulance was donated to the local Bombaros along with medical equipment with the support and help of Sharon from Mayan families. My sons returned to Canada and I stayed for the next 60 days. Originally I had planned to work with tow other charities, but soon realized that Mayan Families were the people on the ground that made the difference every day. Together (Mayan Families provided me with two young helpers that were trained to carry on the projects. We built cabinets for schools, repaired many homes that were not structurally safe, did one addition to a school and many other projects. Each day (we were self financed) we could see the endless lineups at Mayan Families offices (Sharon and Dwight's home) and the life saving services they provide. In my 62 years as a contractor, business man and father, I have never witnessed such a giving and caring group. After leaving in March, I have only good memories of this great organization and these people that are real hero's in Guatemala where the most in need are overlooked by the system.
Mayan Families tells donors exactly what donations go toward. This organization is truly the most worthwhile group I believe anyone can give to. They provide real time support to people in desperate need.
I have been supporting this charity since the beginning for I lived in Guatemala for 24 years and found them to be the most honest and caring charity I have ever known. When the big mud slides occurred, the director used her own money to buy food and collect blankets and clothing for the hundreds of people who lost their homes and families. They care for the people as though it was their family.

For years I have watched Mayan Families grow with so much integrity, helping young and old alike. When the school kids need shoes, they are there. When old people need medicine or hospitalization, they help. Once there was a family that hid a young boy in the house because he was deformed. They helped establish a normal life for him, being with other children outside and no longer hidden. They feed and cloth so many. They also have a clinic where many get help. There are no middle men. Once there was a flood and they fed hundreds and hundreds of people who either lost their home or members of their family or both. They even find homes for dogs. Once when I visited there were more than 20 dogs in various parts of the grounds hiding.

I have been sponsoring a student through this charity since 2007. I love that every penny I send actually goes to my student, be it for school supplies, clothing, medicine or food. Over the past 5 years I have received photos several times a year and it has been fantastic to see how much healthier she appears and how much she has grown. This is my favorite charity and the most fiscally responsible charity I have ever encountered.

Mayan Families is an exceptional charity. I have been sponsoring two Guatemalan girls for several years and have been able to watch them through pictures and letters grow healthy and learn. I prefer Mayan Families to any other charity because I am comfortable that 100% of the money I donate is going directly towards improving and advancing the lives of others.

My children and I have volunteered with Mayan Families twice now and are amazed by the incredible work they do within the community. We can't wait until we can go volunteer again.

I have supported Mayan Families for 4 years now. I love the small grass-roots nature of the organization. Because of this, as a donor, it's a very personal experience. I get updates on the students I sponsor several times a year. If the family of one of my student's need something specific, one of the director's of Mayan Families will let me know. Also, because of the grass-roots nature of Mayan Families, the portion of donations that goes to overhead is very small. I love that this charity is not just focused on helping now but on giving people skills and supplies that will help them become self-supporting.
Review from Guidestar
My experience with Mayan Families was so positive and profound, I am telling all my friends and family members how important it is to volunteer and give back to the community. I worked as a photographer for 3 weeks in September of this year going into schools, documenting different programs which, Mayan Families provide for the indigenous population of Guatemala in Panachel. Witnessing firsthand the dedication of the Mayan Family staff as they provided (among many things) food and comfort to this group of people, pointed me in a direction of hope for the future of our humanity. This was my first experience of physically volunteering for an organization and it will not be my last. I think what I found the most amazing was the sense of purpose and dedication to the mission of "lifting people" from their many burdens. The commitment of all I encountered was inspiring- from the men who drove us to different locations, the volunteer coordinator, other volunteers as well as the director's and their assistant. I am the lucky one to have been involved with so many dedicated people trying to make a difference.
I didn't expect much from this trip to Guatemala but what i learned from working with Mayan Family was much beyond my expectation. People were so nice and I wish I had more time. It was the most valuable summer I've spent. If I could, I would definately go back to Mayan Family. Thank you all for great experience and keep up the great work.
My two months with Mayan Families were fabulous! My two friends and I worked for pre-school nutrition program. We developed Monitoring and Evaluation system for the program, measuring the kids' weights and heights. Every single kid in all pre-schools were adorable. I won't forget their smile... It was always my pleasure to meet these little kids. It was very inspirational experience not because I thought I was doing something for them, but because I thought I'd been always learning from Mayan Families. I saw the local staff sweating a lot to pick up the heavy stove. I saw the volunteer from many different places devoting themselves to build a house for their sponsor kid. I kept eveything inside of my heart for Guatemla. Every single staff in Mayan Families, including the founders, Sharon and Dwight, they tried to help us to make sure we would go back to Canada with the most precious experience with Mayan Families. I really appreciate them. I already miss Panajachel and people there... I had the best summer ever...
We have been connected with Mayan Familaies for many years. What is so awesome is that there is some volunteer work for everyone. The staff at Mayan Families are welcoming. And the work being done is diverse and tremendous. We look forward to our return back there.
We went down to Guatemala as part of my daughter's heritage; she was born there and is beginning to ask questions about her birth history. We spent 2 days volunteering with Mayan Families. They are an impressive organization. We were able to spend time in the preschool, my husband took photos of all 60+ children, the teachers, and some of the parents too. They children are delightful and happily engaged with their teachers and visitors. The school is bright, cheerful and a welcoming place. We also had the privelege of helping to install 2 stoves in the homes of the town of San Antonio Palopo. The families were very grateful to have an efficient stove for their families to use. Mayan Families reaches out to the most in need. We are sponsoring one of the families so their little boy can go to school and get a nutritious meal everyday ( a luxury by their standards). Mayan Families also works to rescue to many stray animals that one inevitebly sees throughout the streets. We will most definitly be back!
This organization and it's efforts are very impressive. I have been working with a variety of non-profits for thirty years, as well as overseeing one of my own, so I know what it takes to run an operation like Mayan Families is running and they are doing an exceptional job. I was looking for a new avenue in which to expand my exisiting programs and donation efforts and I have deffinately found that avenue in the Mayan Families organization!
This summer was my turn to finally give something back to Guatemala and its wonderful people, and I feel so lucky to have chosen Mayan Families. I followed their blogs for a year before deciding that this was the place for me, somewhere that volunteers and donors (as I now am in sponsoring children through them) can become personally involved and aware of the people that they are helping. As a 3-week volunteer in July and August, I visited my sponsored child and her family, visited other children along with their sponsors, installed energy efficient wood cook stoves, served lunch to elderly clients, translated letters from tiny, grateful children to their sponsors, and even banged nails and sawed wood on a housing project. I believe I made lifelong friends with Mayan Family staff, volunteers from around the world and other sponsors such as myself, and most rewarding of all -- the children and clients served by Mayan Families. All this was remarkably free of any ideology other than the motto of Mayan Families -- Educate, Feed, Shelter, Heal. I can hardly wait to go back next summer and do it all again! And in the meantime work from afar with other sponsors and volunteers to help all year long.
Our group of 10, 4 adults and 6 teens, just returned from volunteering at Mayan Families for two weeks. We helped build stoves, painted murals and provided muscle for moving . Mayan Families' efforts in providing support to the Maya population around Lake Atitlan is significant, impressive and important. From educating the children to feeding the elderly to free medical services, Mayan Families is making a difference in the lives of a disparate population in need of a hand up. We will be returning next year to volunteer!
My 12 year old daughter and I had the privilege of working with Mayan Families for 5 days. We were with a friend and her daughter who were volunteering for their 4th year. I was so impressed by this organization. Having served on boards and working with many non profits over my 20 years in business I can confidently say this is the best NPO out there. I have been back in the states for a week and I cannot stop telling people about Mayan Families or brainstorming on ways that I can help the organization from the states. The amount of work that was done on a daily basis with a limited staff and resources is absolutely amazing. I have never been so touched and changed by any experience before. All the MF staff felt like family to me by the end of the week. We were treated as part of the team, supported as part of the team and I still feel like one of the team working from home. Thank you for all you did for us, I can't wait to get back down to work some more.
My husband and I went with 7 other members of our church to work with Mayan Families, installing stoves in families' homes and sponsoring children to go to school. It was the most amazing experience for us. We were never left on our own, always having, at least one, sometimes more, of the Mayan Families' members with us to help with their language, as we spoke very little Spanish, and helping us understand the culture there. This is a wonderful group, and it's doing wonderful things for the families in Guatemala. We've had so much support from friends and families at home - we're going to return next year!
This is our 4th year volunteering with Mayan Families. My 7 yr. old daughter and I brought down a friend and her 12 yr. old daughter to help this year. It was another amazing experience. MF makes it so easy. We thank they all for the help they gave us bagging food to take to the preschools, arranging the snack we would serve and getting us to and from the preschools. Erin and Eddie were amazing. Along with Gloria, Julio, Dwight and Sharon. Cannot say enough about the amazing staff. Thanks for another wonderful year and all the great work you all do in Guatemala!
I had the pleasure of working with Mayan Families this summer as a dentist on a volunteer mission to Guatemala. They are clearly a group of motivated caring volunteers who not only provide essential services but also compassion for those they help.
I like the way Mayan Families is organized and run. When we donated and communicated with them, they were very professional and helpful.I also like their awards and reviews. I have seen with my own eyes the work Mayan Families does. Other groups just talk and have too many meetings. Mayan Families works, does the job needed right now and walks the talk. If you want a really dedicated group, this is it.
Mayan Families is an amazing organization. Dwight and Sharon helped us with transportation, interpreters, housing and repair of dental equipment. Our group of 28 volunteers were able to provide dental care to 930 children in 5 days thanks to Mayan Families. The highlight of my week was meeting the teenager we sponsored last year. With our donation, he was able to go to trade school this year. His big hug and smile will never be forgotten. There are so many ways to help support this wonderful NGO!!
We (Kids International Dental Services) have been working with Mayan Families for quite a few years and it never ceases to amaze me to see the extent of their commitment toward the Mayan people and Mayan culture. I have tremendous amount of respect for their ability to organize any complex work and get it all done. For one entire week we work together and their staff and volunteers work tirelessly with us every single year. Looking forward to be with them again next year.

I am the President of a non-profit and we provide pro-bono dental care to impoverished children in three countries. We have been working with Mayan Families for last three years. After our trip there last year, I became a donor as well because I truly believe in their dedication, effectiveness, and efficiency in what they do. This year we worked in 4 different villages around Panajachel with Mayan Families for 5 days. Everything was extremely well organized. The staff who worked with us did so tirelessly and with a smile on their face all day long, every single day. We ended up treating more than 800 needy children. I can not say enough positive things about each and everyone in Mayan Family. We have worked with numerous organizations in Central America over last ten years, and Mayan Family gets my highest score.
Wow what a great experience working with the Myan Famlies. They were always right there to assist not only with the working of the families with supplies. This was my first trip to Guatemala and it was an eye opening experience to see how these people live. It is marvelous that there are people like the Myan Families to help the families with providing schools, efficient stoves, food etc. I was really touched by the students and their families and was glad to be part of our team. I am looking forward to returning next year to help where I can.. Thanks to all of the staff of Myan Families for making me feel welcomed and for all of the assistance with making arrangements to make our visit more enjoyable.
My experience with the Mayan Families was wonderful. This organization is well organized. We were greeted each day with an intinerary and plan of events. ALL of the employees, workers and volunteers were excellent. We were provided with interpreters and workers at all times. They were always sensitive to our needs and comfort levels. They're misson is a tribute to the Mayan people...always focused on their well being, striving to improve their conditions, and honoring their culture in the process. What a blessing this experience has been for me! I'm looking forward to going back for more!
Mayan Families is a wonderful organization located in Panajachel, Solola, Guatemala. I recently returned from my 3rd trip with them and they are absolutely outstanding! They have their act together, and I know these people personally and they are all just loving caring people. Already got the trip booked for the next two years!
Their heart is really in the right place! They need work in meeting new comers, getting them connected and organizing their activities. Some new volunteers get lost because there is not a string program to capture them when they arrive and make them productive.
This was my first mission trip ever and the first time I've been out of the United States. All I can say is that this organization blew me away by how well they organized our stay and what we could do to help. They always made sure we had someone with us who could translate for us, made the necessary reservations for lodging and any restaurants that we wanted to go to. The experience of helping to build 10 stoves for families in need was priceless. I also admire them for promoting education beyond the 6th grade for the indigenous people of Guatemala. For loving the people as they are but showing them that with further education they can improve there lives! I cannot say enough good things for the staff of this organization. I look forward to returning and working with them again in the future!
What an excellent organization! I have been donating for a few years now and I am amazed at how much they have grown and the impact Mayan Families is having in Guatemala! I have been to Guatemala and visited with my sponsored students, all made possible through Mayan Families. Their sustainable programs are very impressive!

Our daughter's birth country is Guatemala and we give to mayan Families as a means of "giving back" for the gift of her in our lives. Thay do so much with the funds give that I recommend them to all my contacts at holiday times.
Mayan families is an organization that is truly geared to sacrifice! I was with the Non-profit group Global Hands of Healing. We set up medical/dental/vision clinics in 4 different areas and were able to help hundreds of patients. Mayan families organized the clinics, arranged our hotel accomodations, suggested ways to spend our time, and provided translators. It was very easy for us! All we did was show up and work. Thanks Mayan Families!
What drew me toMayan Families is the amazing and meaningful impact they have set out to make in Guatemala. Often times, volunteer opportunities are difficult to organize independently, when I feel that they should be more accessible to anyone who wants to donate his/her time. however, Mayan Families is unique in the sense that not only is the website easy to navigate, but also volunteer opportunities and programs are also posted on idealist.org. The high quality of each volunteer opportunity is a defining characteristic of Mayan Families, and speaks volumes about their commitment to better serving the poorest communities in Guatemala. I really enjoyed my time with Mayan Families! I was on a medical trip and can highly recommend them! There is so much to do!
I am a nurse practitioner who travelled with Global Hands of Healing, a medical mission group from Texas to the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala. Mayan Families was our in country coordinator who prepared the way for us to serve over 600 indigenous people over four days in four different locations. Mayan Families found us suitable sites to set up our portable clinics. They provided us with indigenous translators, tables and chairs, and advertised our locations so that the villagers knew when to come for medical care, dental extractions and vision screenings. Their knowledge, expertise and culteral competence were invaluable to us in completing our mission of service. Thank you Mayan Families!
I was blessed to find Mayan Families when I had some vacation time and a desire to make a difference. I was a volunteer translator. The process gave me much more than the time I gave, as I learned about sustainability efforts in Guatemala. The staff were very generous and showered me with appreciation far beyond my small efforts. Thank you so much Mayan Families!
We had a fun and inspiring time volunteering, laughing and sometimes crying with Mayan Families, their beautiful staff and the people they work with in Guatemala. They empower Women to do so much with their various programs. We sponsor a child through Mayan Families and couldn't be happier. This groups is super tight with a dollar, I couldn't believe it. A pleasure. We will be returning next year!
I am a CEO and I got involved when a friend sent me their newsletter. What a super organization. They are all about connecting to the Mayan Community. They pick great projects and I was personally involved. Their staff was easy to work with. Their engagement within the Women's community was comfortable and welcoming. I felt valued as a volunteer and my time was well spent. Mayan Families work is really important and they participate in so many areas in rural Guatemala. They gave me a WOW moment that was life changing. Thank you Mayan Families!!!
I traveled to Guatemala looking for a group to work with. I contacted Mayan Families and they were very easy and professional to work with. We did all sorts of work on various projects. This group delivers on it's promise. I have volunteered with others and none come close to Mayan Families. If you want to work on a service trip and not just lay around, then volunteer with Mayan Families. Inspiring!
The week we spent working with Mayan Families was phenomenal! The organization of bed and stove deliveries was so great and the role that the volunteers got to take part in provided an opportunity to really see donations in action. Would definitely work with them time and time again.
I had such a great experience working with Mayan Families. They were very flexible with our group and our schedule and even helped us to do more volunteering than originally planned. They were great! And I can't wait to work with them again.
I would support and work again with this organization in a heartbeat! They stretch the donated dollar like nobody else! They are right in there, live there, know the folks they serve by name and circumstance and channel gifts to needs immediately and thoroughly. Hearts are huge and have expanded mine over my expectations. They truly love, and are loved by the population as their service is paid forward like good yeast in the dough. As soon as I returned, I included Mayan Families as a beneficiary of my estate. With heartfelt pleasure!
My family and I had an amazing time with Sharon, Gloria and all of the Mayan Families staff in Guatemala! They were so helpful. Everything was well planned and proved that we had made the right choice! We all wanted to give back to Guatemala and this is the group that really does it! Hard working and patient. We saw and worked side by side with so many Indigenous Maya Women and they really respect Mayan Families. Highly Highly recommend! Our kids had a life changing time and all they talk about now is when can we go back? We are planning our next trip right now, hopefully very soon.
Life changing! I am a Rotarian and this group really impresses me! Great experience! What an outstanding organization that supports the poor in rural Guatemala in their attempts to get a start economically. Micro-finance at it's best with Mayan Families! It's just superb. Because they work directly with the Mayans in Guatemala they can help in the right ways. Super work ethic! Tireless in their pursuit, even in the rainy seasons storms! I have volunteered with them on two service trips. Hard work and Fun!
I installed fuel efficient stoves, set up water filters and more with Mayan Families. Please help this group help more people in Guatemala. They walk the talk like no one else! Very efficient group too! I like really cheap people who make a dime stretch as far as possible and Mayan Families does that and more. Other groups are lazy, not Mayan Families. The amount of work they do is staggering! Their standards are some of the highest I have seen and they are so friendly and welcoming to volunteer with!
I am both a donor and a volunteer. I've been involved with several organizations in both Mexico and Guatemala that support women's empowerment in various ways, by far Mayan Families is the Best! I helped with Disaster Relief with Mayan Families and was so impressed also! Micro Loans and Student Sponsorship's are why I keep coming back to Mayan Families! Visit them in Guatemala and you will see for yourself!
I have volunteered time and monies to Mayan Families and am truly impressed. They always put Women first. They take so many photos of all of their work. I know where my money and time is going with Mayan Families Very impressive! The work they do with the poor in Guatemala is life changing on a generational basis. Keep up the great work!
Excellent volunteer opportunity! We did so much work and I really felt like I made a difference! I will come back again and again! This is the hardest working group I have ever volunteered for! Amazing people and staff! They make you feel so welcome! I was also working with Mayan Families during the storms and they were simply amazing! I most highly recommend this wonderful Non Political and Non Religious Group!
I volunteered with Mayan Families on a social work, study abroad trip. My summer with them was amazing. They help the community in so many areas and the entire community is incredibly appreciative of everything they do.
Mayan Families is a great organization. I was part of a church group that volunteered to build a home for a displaced family. Mayan Families was very effective in utilizing our church's monies and our man power to get a family a home. The leaders are well connected in the community and well respected. They were a great organization to volunteer for and I feel like my time and money were well spent to impact others lives.
I was a co-sponsor/group leader of a group of 15 from Lindbergh High School and the Crestwood Sunset Hills Rotary Club. While in Guatemala we were hosted, assisted, and lovingly attended to 24/7 by the staff of Mayan Families Organization. They arranged for us to have safe and clean experiences regarding our housing, dining, transportation, and work experiences. We had need of medical help and they were instantaneously able to provide us the attention needed. The Mayan Families Staff trained us and accompanied us to help with the installation of 30 stoves, roofing and finishing a home, serving meals to seniors, providing clothing and shoes to a local village, and 5 pre-schools where we assisted in basic lessons in Spanish. Although we fundraised and were able to bring 15 suitcases of clothing, shoes, and school supplies and purchase 15 stoves as well as 4 pre-school sponsorships we were given far more back from the staff of Mayan Families and the wonderful citizens in Guatemala. I can't begin to express how much we appreciated developing positive working relationships with the extremely gifted staff including stove experts, pre-school experts, drivers, distribution experts and all the other amazing angels of service working for Mayan Families. I would highly recommend any family, church, or school group making a commitment to develop a partnership with Mayan Families Organization. They work endless hours to sustain the outstanding service and integrity they represent in their communities. I've had the good fortune to work with many charitable associations worldwide, however I've never worked with a staff and program as outstanding and inspirational as the Mayan Families Organization. I'm sure I'll fail to mention everyone but some of our outstanding staff trainers and partners included Sharon, Dwight, Gloria, Julio, Rachel, Elizabeth, Laura, Beth, Juan, Juan-Carlos, Charlie, Eric, Augustine, Roberto, Eddie, and many more.
I was a photography volunteer for the Mayan Families for a week and went with Carmen to visit the Families in San Jorge and Tiera Linda. Carmen was amazing and was able to find out the families needs such as matress, food, and if their homes needed to be fixed. My experience with her was amazing and learned a lot from her and about the families.
Volunteered at Mayan Families for 3 weeks and the experience was incredible, they do fantastic work that reaches not only many communities but also many facets within those communities. For me a traveler who has seen so much the ability to contribute face to face with Mayan people who have seen and experienced so much throughout their history both over hundreds of years and the last decades provided me with great purpose and them with a helping set of hands.
It was fun meeting the girl we sponsor. I am seven years old and it was a great experience because got to eat lunch, color and draw, and have fun in the playground at Mayan Families. I will always remember it and I even have a picture of the girl we sponsor in our kitchen. I really want to go back and help Mayan Families in their schools. It was so special to go there! I think it's really great that Mayan Families helps dogs, too.
I'm nine years old and I visited the girl our family sponsors in Pana. during our winter break. I had an opportunity to have fun with someone I didn't know but I got to know a lot better. It was really neat that I was able to do this because we're both in the same grade and I was able to understand how her family lives and what she likes to play with. I saw lots of other children at Mayan Families. I could see it was a very special place.

We are an adoptive family. Both our children were born in Guatemala. We have wanted to give back in some way to our children's homeland. We have found such a perfect fit for our family with Mayan Families. It is a remarkably well-run organization that has provided not only educational opportunities for scores of Mayan Guatemalans but also the basic necessities that we so often take for granted in this country. Their reach in the indigenous community, their respect and cpmpassion are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Mayan Families is a gift to so many and we are grateful.

I visited Mayan Families last month in Panajachel with a small church group, to help build a house. The staff were wonderful, hard-working, and very helpful. They seemed to know the names of everyone in the town, and were received with smiles everywhere. The work Mayan Families is doing is with pre-school; many nutrition programs for clients from babies to the elderly; student sponsorship from elementary thru university; and anything else the clients need. I had no idea this level of poverty and need existed in the Western Hemisphere outside of Haiti & Dominican Republic. I had no idea this level of malnutrition & growth stunting still existed - anywhere I feel tall standing next to adults (I am 5'3") I know there are problems; and many of the street vendors and adults I met were less than 4' tall.
Last month, our family visited Mayan Families in Pana. We had the chance to see the remarkable work this team of dedicated staff takes on every day. We're in awe of the involvement, the extensive programs, the enormous difference this organization is making in the lives of so many indigenous Maya in the area. Our family was honored to have the chance to meet and have lunch with the student we sponsor and her mother. The time we had together, talking, laughing and learning about one another, had a profound impact on our family, especially our children. On the car ride back to our hotel we were already planning our next visit to Mayan Families! What a privilege it was for us to spend time with the people at Mayan Families, a truly extraordinary non-profit.
My experience with Mayan Families was incredible. I recently visited Panajachel with UM Rotaract to work with the NGO. Our achievement of building 21 stoves in 3 days was only made possible thanks to the great organization of Mayan Families. They were welcoming, friendly, and extremely passionate about the work they were doing.
14 SAIT Polytechnic Architectural and electrical students plus 4 instructors just returned from Panajachel, working with Mayan Families for the last two weeks. The work that Mayan Families is involved with was a perfect match for what our students had to offer. It gave our students an opportunity to put their educational skills to work in the field and made many of them realize for the firs time, that they can influence change, one concrete block at a time. Mayan Families was most accommodating to all of our needs, they provided interesting guest speakers, educational tours of the villages that they work with day to day. This is a wonderful organisation doing very meaningful work and we were lucky to be part of this for two weeks.
My husband and I just returned from our second trip to Pana and to work with Mayan Families. It is such a pleasure to know that our donations are being used so wisely to help the people of Pana. Dwight and Sharon and the whole team are outstanding. They truly care for the people they serve and it shows every day. I am very impressed that they take time to listen and dig deeper into a situation, in order to provide what the family needs - which is not always whay the family requests. While on this trip we took part in the experiment to build a house in one week! What a blast! Yes, we did it, and loved every minute. The workers hired to run the job by Mayan families were patient and a joy to work with. By the end of the week most of us knew many words for construction - not only Spanish - but in Katchequel as well - and the workers were eager to learn the corresponding English words. We also got to meet the children we sponsor and enjoy lunch with them at a local restaurant. Not many non-profits make this happen. What a gift to be able to spend time encouraging them and really learning their needs. We cannot wait to go back.
I absolutely fell in love with Mayan Families. I recently have returned from a trip to Panajachel, where we collaborated with them. Hearing about all the different projects they do is astounding, and it was amazing to help out with them. Specifically, we aided with the stove building and visited some of the pre-schools. I am very, very impressed with the dedication and the passion Dwight and Sharon put into their work, as well as all the volunteers and workers with Mayan Families. This NGO really is making a huge difference in the area and I am flattered to have worked with them.
Since I visited my sponsored child a year ago, Mayan Families has assisted me in helping her family in many ways. With my donations, they have built a bathroom with flush toilet and shower, neither of which the family had. They facilitated the purchase of a house and land. The mother is enrolled in sewing classes and a cousin is attending preschool. Food is bought for the family. All these things and more are provided by Mayan Families with funds I send. None would be possible without Mayan Families' dedicated staff who work long hours to help the Mayan people. Photos are sent to all sponsors so that we see our families receiving everything we provide. Donors know without a doubt that the funds they send are being used as directed.

I recently visited Mayan Families for the first time and was very impressed with the work they do. The staff accompanied me on a visit to my sponsored family, observed the many problems with the home situation and are currently working with me to remedy them. This is truly a "hands on" organization. The staff works hard and cares for everyone who comes through their door. They are literally saving so many of the Mayan people in their area.

We've sponsored a student thur Mayan Families for 3 years now. My kids love seeing pictures of our student. Mayan Families also sends us pictures and letters our student has done. It's a blessing for both us and our student that we are helping.
Mayan Families is one of the most amazing direct service charity I have ever seen. They understand well the needs of the their community, develop programs that have amazing impact, and turn on a dime whenever disaster hits -- which is far to frequent in this part of the world. I also love how they work hard to find ways for their donors and volunteers to help -- wether from their homes in the US or Europe or on the ground in Guatemala. As a person who has know the organization now for over 5 years, I find that they work hard to ensure that whatever the program they employ the local community -- from full time employees to buying aprons for their cooking class from the students in their sewing school. This is a group that I can recommend without hesitation -- once again after being with them a month this year. Thank you to Mayan Families!
As the Director of Canada Maya Scholarships, and board member of Paso Por Paso, I am pleased to endorse Mayan Families as an exceptional NGO. One of our students lost his uncle's entire family in the mud slides of tormenta Agatha. Mayan Families immediately came to his family's aid and assisted many others affected in San Antonio Atitlan. Their assisted extended to many other villages around the lake. We have been connected with Mayan Families since their inception, and we know intimately their compassion, guidance, ability to act and to serve.
I have been volunteering at Mayan Families for the past three months. In the short amount of time with the organization, I've learned a great deal about the language, culture and customs of the indigenous communities. The employees here at Mayan Families take such pride in helping the different communities around Panajachel; their positive vibes and smiles are infectious! Couple that with the powerful energy surrounding the lake and this is quite a unique place.
The week preceding Christmas, I had the wonderful opportunity of helping host a Christmas party six days in a row, in a different villages’ school each day.
Seeing the faces of ecstatic children clutching the only Christmas present they received all year, while posing for a photograph with their family next to Santa Claus and a Christmas tree, was incredibly powerful.
The adults were also very grateful for their gifts. Just by looking at them, you would not be able to tell that many live on a dirt floor and often struggle to pay for a can of beans to cook over an open fire. Some are forced to use string to keep there ear piercings open, because they cannot afford earrings, however they were incredibly cheerful and comported themselves with dignity and respect. Words really can’t do it justice.
Not only does it feed the soul to be helping these people, but I’ve also learned a lot and acquired a much different perspective on life. I would highly recommend donating, volunteering, or just visiting this organization.
I have been to Guatemala twice in the past year, and working with Mayan Families was incredible on so many levels. The dedication of each and everyone of their staff/volunteers is inspiring. The Mayans are a proud and beautiful people, and Mayan Families respects their dignity and works to help them achieve independence through support of educational programs, etc...I plan to return to Guatemala in the near future, and look forward to working again with Mayan Families.

My husband and I just spent a week in Panajachel and had an opportunity to see first-hand the outstanding work that Mayan Families is doing in the surrounding villages. From pre-school to elder care and animal welfare, Mayan Families is making a difference. We were able to visit the village where our sponsored children live, and met with them and their families. It was a pleasure to see the smiling faces of families who received Onil stoves, food, clothing and other supplies. Mayan Families makes things happen! I can't wait to go back again to see the progress being made.

What a wonderful organization!!! The people who work for Mayan Families have gone above and beyond helping me to sponsor a student as a very last minute Christmas gift for my daughters. On Christmas Eve day I spoke with one of the organizers who assisted me in sponsoring a student in Guatemala.
My daughters take part in donating a portion of their allowance to the Mayan Families and are so excited when they get to see pictures of their friend Marta.
The ability to have a real sense of knowing where your donations are going is such a fantastic benefit. We are so grateful for the work that Mayan Families is doing and we hope they can continue to grow.

I had the opportunity to work directly with Mayan Families through the KIDS dental mission trip to Guatemala this year. Their staff and volunteers were extremely kind and helpful with the children we treated as well as their parents. Their translation services and cheerful attitudes made our program so much more successful. I am proud to have worked with this organization and would highly recommend them.
I have been on several non-profit boards and I have never seen such a dedicated and hard working group. I saw many mothers and children who have been given hope because of Mayan Families.
I had the pleasure of working with Mayan families and Dr Renner and Purobi and their KIDS organization giving dental care to children in need in Guatemala. Without them translating and providing logistics, none of this would have been possible. They were kind, helpful and always had the children's best interest in mind. A great group and I highly recommend them.
I am a dentist who has been working with Mayan families for the past four years in August. Our foundation KIDS International Dental Services helps Mayan families provide pro bono dental services to their Mayan communities. Mayan Families provides us with expertise, logistics and translation and is with us daily to assist us to provide the best dental care for these Mayan families. We will return again in 2012 and with the great assistance of Mayan Families again to provide dental care. This is a top notch NGO.
I volunteered as a private pediatric dental practitioner for a pediatric dental mission this past august in Guatemala. Mayan families did an amazing job having things organized for us so we could efficiently and safely treat as many Mayan children as possible in a two week period. The local Mayan family volunteers did an amazing job helping translate and make the children patients feel as comfortable as possible. I hope to return one day!
I volunteered for two weeks with Mayan Families and I had an awesome time seeing how this nonprofit works and contributing my time and efforts. I spent a good deal of time with Mayan Families working at a dental clinic in several villages and also visited a few preschools where we did arts and crafts and distributed food bags to students. Great way to spend my time in Guatemala - I saw so much and learned even more than I ever would have as a typical tourist. Will definitely be back soon!
We visited Mayan Families as part of a 19 person church group installing stoves, distributing shoes, etc. We observed how the Mayan Families organization is in touch with the individual needs of the families they served. We would return from doing work and mention a specific family. The MF staff and especially the leader (Sharon) would then mention a few specifics about the family and their individual situation . . . right from their memory with no notes! It told me that they treat these several thousand families as real people with specific needs.
I also saw how MF react to new information . . . we would make observations about specific situations and they would clearly responds . . . sometimes with action during the time we were there and sometimes noting for future action.
I was also impressed by:
1. the obvious personal commitment of MF staff and leadership
2. the orientation toward action . . . there didn't appear to be too much "overhead/administration" stuff
3. how well MF documents the services they provide via photos
Mayan Families is so important to the indigenous families of the Lake Atitlan area. These unselfish, humanitarian people provide needed clothing, shoes, food, education, and homes to the families and children of these villages. However, they also are totally involved in working with Mayan people of all ages -- from the youngest children to the elderly. Mayan Families finds a way to provide homes for those families who cannot provide for themselves. Medical and dietary assistance is brought to the elderly. They selflessly spay and neuter dogs and cats in the villages.
Having spent a week volunteering for Mayan Families, I was amazed at Dwight and Sharon's dedication to helping preseve the lives and dignity of the Mayan Families. Their focus is to help eliminate malnutrition (e.g., food baskets, chickens) , provide education for the young people (e.g., school sponsorships for preschool through university), improve the quality and health conditions for the families (e.g., ONIL stoves, walter filters, clothing, shoes, medicines/medical care), and celebrate/respect the cultural beliefs and traditions of the Mayan families in this area of Guatemala.
Mayan Families was a pleasure to volunteer with and it didn't take long to realize how important their work is to the community. Their services are essential to many families and the results are tangible. I had an excellent time volunteering with them and hope to return when I can.
I've worked with Mayan Families now for 2 summers (1 week per visit) and have really been impressed by the breadth of the work they do and the way they are embraced by the local communities they touch. They are tireless and while things can appear chaotic to the untrained eye - underneath the surface a lot of wonderful work is done. They are AWESOME at providing tangible feedback to both those who are there doing the work and through their photo-documentation of all the work they do. I really have enjoyed my time working with them and believe they are making a tangible differences in the lives of thousands in their area.
i spent several months in Panajachel, Guatemala as a volunteer with Mayanfamilies, doing a variety of things. I was really impressed by their grass roots approach and the fact that assistance was given really quickly to those who needed it. I was also really impressed by the dedication of the staff who are mainly indigenous, so are learning skills and being educated as well. They may never have been able to achieve this without the help of Mayan families. I am in touch frquently, and hope to return in 2012 to be hands on in this wonderful organisation again. Sharon and Dwight and all their amazing staff deserve the best.

I arrived from Australia to volunteer for Mayan families, just prior to "tropical storm Agatha." I witnessed at first hand, Mayan Families immediate response in assisting those people in urgent need, providing food and clothing to those pueblos hardest hit.I have seen the wonderful work that is being done here by an unstinting and committed staff.
I have sponsored a student for the last four years and I send her and her family donations of food during the year. I love receiving letters from her and she always is so thankful for her education sponsorship. She has many dreams for herself and I am blessed to be part of her achieving her goals in life.
I volunteered with Mayan Families for 3 months and had a fantastic experience! The staff is friendly and helpful and always willing to stop to answer questions or just to say hello. Sharon and Dwight are both incredible people... their dedication and loyalty towards the indigenous Mayan people is unsurpassed. I had the pleasure of working outside of the Mayan Families Headquarters, in the lawn where the people wait to receive assistance. Everyone I talked to shared the same attitude of thankfulness and joy towards the assistance that Mayan Families had provided to them. I would highly recommend working with or supporting Mayan Families!
Mayan Families assisted our organization, Global Hands of Healing, with our medical, dental, and vision mission trip and the week could not have gone better. Mayan Families identified the villages that would benefit the most from our services and arranged for us to set up in each of these villages to provide much needed health care. They provided the help needed to set up and translate and anything else that we were not able to provide for ourselves. Mayan Families is doing amazing work in these villages, especially with the children and the elderly. We will definitely partner with them again for future mission trips to Guatemala.
I recently traveled with a group called Global Hands of Healing to Panajachel, Guatemala. With the help of Mayan Families, we completed 4 days of medical/dental/vision clinic in 4 small villages surrounding Panajachel. We COULD NOT have done this work without Mayan Families' help. They organized where we would set up our clinic each day, they informed the people in the villages that we would be coming, and they provided safe transportation and great translators for us! We also got to know many people at Mayan Families personally and shared several meals together. The people working for Mayan Families are truly devoted to helping underprivileged Guatemalans (and their pets!) and are extremely friendly and accommodating to their volunteers!
We've been sponsoring a child's education now for three years. We also send additional funds when we can, for food, clothing, etc. I've never worked with a group before that is so organized and so caring about the people that they serve.
We are able to get updates which is great, and also allows us to help more when needed. Thank you to all at Mayan Families for the very hard work that you do.
Our daughter who is an emergency nurse in Vancouver wanted to volunteer, so my husband and I really liked the work Mayan Families was doing when we helped 6 years ago. We requested information about specific work that we would be doing if we came back. There were lots of opportunities and projects on the go, where we could help. Mayan Families is very good about giving you information about where to stay, and getting you from the airport with shuttles etc.
We made the arrangements and just returned from Panajachel, Guatemala. We spent 2 weeks helping Mayan Families in Pana. We arrived at the beginning of June, and there were many medical clinics helping in all the small villages around Lake Atitland. It was amazing to see many volunteers just showing up wanting to help.
We met many wonderful staff, volunteers and quickly became involved in what ever was needed.
My husband and I came to help volunteer with Mayan Families 6 years ago in 2005, as we were making our way through Central America. The organization based in Panajatchel, Guatemala has a passion for helping the indigenous men, women and children who have been devastated by natural disasters and poverty. We were willing to help where ever they needed us. There was a great need at the time to help rebuild homes, for those who were devastated with the mud slides and flooding after Hurricane Stan. The adobe washes away over time with the floods and needs to be replaced. We worked on three projects (two in Panajachel and one in San HorHay) over the course of 2-3 weeks. One family of 13 had been living under a piece of metal roofing for atleast 5 months. It was so rewarding to be part of a group of volunteers who came from all over the world to help. Mayan Families knew their familie's needs and placed us on a team to do construction. To see the appreciation through the smiles of the families that we helped was so worthwhile and meaningful, as they finally had a small wooden frame house with bunk beds, an outside kitchen which was a framed open structure with a roof and an out house.
We witnessed families that had been given micro loans to buy chickens and a rooster, or to run a small store out of their homes. There were sewing classes to teach the single moms, while their children were being cared for. Children were being sponsored to go to school and become educated. Clinics were set up to help children with spina bifida due to a lack of folic acid in their diets. So many worthwhile needs were being met. Love, compassion, and a drive to help others was very evident by those involved with Mayan Families.
i spent two weeks as a volunteer photographer with mayan families. from the moment they picked me up in guatemala city, i knew i was with wonderful people who were supportive and PASSIONATE about helping others. during my time i was able to observe first-hand many of the programs that do so much for the surrounding communities - in particular the preschool, the elderly feeding programs and the medical clinics. the people who work and volunteer here are amazing and every day i felt blessed to be a part of such a special community. if you are thinking of donating in any way to their cause, don't hesitate - your money/donations are needed and will be put to USE. if you are thinking about donating your time, rest assured that the staff of mayan families will take good care of you. there is no reason to feel apprehensive about anything. i am so glad i went down to spend time with mayan families.

Mayan Families makes the most of every donation they receive, helping to empower indigenous women and children in Guatemala through programs in health care, education, and self-sufficiency.
I love this organization... they do many great things in Guatemala. Through them, I sponsor children so that they can go to school. I get pictures, letters and drawings from the kids I sponsor. I can also choose to donate holiday baskets, clothing, food, etc.. They also help families with medical expenses, run preschools, animal clinics, build houses. They are amazing!
I just finished volunteering for three weeks at Mayan Families in Panajachel, Guatemala. I come away from that experience extremely impressed with Mayan Families. Passion, commitment, dedication and integrity are a few words that come to mind when I remember the people on staff and other volunteers I met while there. Everyone is truly committed to helping improve the quality of life in the communities they are working in. Meeting the students and their families I sponsor was one of the highlights of my trip. Especially listening to one mother express her joy, gratitude, and appreciation that her children were going to get an education that they would otherwise not receive without a sponsor. She knowing that her children getting a good education would profoundly change her family's quality of life for generations to come. Her sincerity was so overwhelming and powerful that it brought tears to my eyes. Upon which she reached out to comfort me. What a beautiful and genuine person she truly is. Also while there I had the opportunity to visit a few of the per-schools Mayan Families operates. It was very heart warming to meet the children who are benefiting from these schools. At these schools the children also receive a meal of nourishing food with a vitamin pill 5 times a week. For some of them it is the only healthy meal they get. What a positive difference it will make in their lives by being able to attend these schools. Mayan Families is truly living their vision and is truly assisting the Mayan families they intend to help. It was very comforting to learn that the money I donate to Mayan Families does get to the families that are in need of help.
I volunteered with Mayan Families for 2 months. During that time i witnessed and participated in the wonderful work they do for the indigienous people of Guatemala. We supplied and installed much needed cooking stoves for poor families and distributed essential medical supplies for people who, if it wern't for the work of this organisation, could never afford it. The work Mayan Families do is truly amazing and inspiring. Thank you for letting me be a part of it!
I retired as a teacher from a U.S. school that had a Spanish bilingual program in the 1990s, but this program was rejected by voters in the late 90s. The texts in Spanish had languished in our school's store room for more than 10 years. My husband and I connected with Mayan Families to get these books shipped to Panajachel and have them distributed to the public schools in the area. We spent two weeks working with the Mayan Families staff to sort the 2000 pounds of books and get them delivered to schools that literally had no textbooks. We saw not only how they helped with our project, but also got to observe their tireless efforts to support many other projects to help the indigenous people of Guatemala improve their lives.
I am also a donor. I first heard of Mayan Families while I was in the adoption process to bring our daughter home. Some of the mom's that were with the same agency would bring donations down when they went to visit their babies. about a year after we brought our daughter home I felt there was more I needed to do in Guatemala. I remembered MF and went to their website. That night I sponsored 4 grils for school. At that time there were less than 50 children sponsored. now the number is well over 1000 in a matter of 4 short years. Sharon, Dwight and the Mayan Families staff are an amazing group of angels here on earth.
I joined the yahoo support group MFC which had been started to chat and share about Guatemala and MF. We eventually developed fundraisers, organized shipments of donations, and learned through doing that even $5 added to someone elses $5 really does help.
My daughter and I went to visit Mayan Families in the summor of 08. WE saw first hand the dedication and never ending giving of their hearts and souls. Their door was always open. I will never forget seeing the immediate action of Sharon when a concerned mother brought her teen age daughter and apparently hadn't known she was preganant. With in minutes Sharon and Gloria had a plan and an appointment at the doctors.
I have also started a jewelry website where the profits are donated to Mayan Families. I cannot wait to dedicate more of my time and life to this wonderful organization.

I have never seen a charity do so much with what they get. I feel 110% good about everything I give to this organization. I know that every penny I give them goes to individual people very in need. They are committed to helping as many people in Guatemala improve their lives, and they continue to build a grass-roots movement of supporters who continue to give amounts small and large at every opportunity. I have yet to find a more worthy charity.
Mayan Families is a wonderful organization working in the Highlands of Guatemala. I am extremely impressed with all Mayan Families is able to accomplish with its budget, and with the job it does communicating with its donors and other stakeholders.

My family and I sponsor 2 children to attend school in Guatemala. I am continually amazed by the comprehensive nature of this organization. During our short time as sponsors, we have seen the family get food, an education, celebrate the holidays, and receive medical attention. These are the most dedicated, hard-working, creative, and committed individuals that I have ever met. There impact is immeasurable.

My family and I volunteered with Mayan Families for a few days in December. We helped assemble and distribute Tamale Baskets and clothing to people in need. We were also able to meet the students that we sponsor to go to school. The staff was great to work with and really care about the people they serve. Mayan Families is a great organization that is helping to meet a significant need in many communities.

I volunteered with Mayan Families for a few months and found them to be extremely dedicated to their work and that they were achieving amazing outcomes. All the staff are very hard-working and extremely knowledgable about what they do. I am so impressed with the multitude of projects they have running simultaneously. They really making a wonderful contribution, and promoting positive change with all the communities they work with. I really enjoyed my time with them.

Mayan Families is an outstanding organization, providing assistance to families in the Highlands region of Guatemala. Their program in which donors can sponsor a student to afford a public eduction is a particularly successful program and one that is well-run by the organization. My family has sponsored a student for three years and we have received consistent updates on the student's progress through school. I highly recommend Mayan Families to those willing to give.

I personally have contributed to their Christmas, Easter and Valentine's Day programs, have helped continue the education of two children, and have provided families with food, beds and clean water equipment. Because of their work, I am able to make a difference in the lives of these families, and in their community when crises hit Guatemala. I'm amazed at the reach of impact this one organization has been able to accomplish.

I've never been changed by an organization the way I have been by Mayan Families. We have been donating to MF for four years and now the organization and the children/families we donate to have become deeply woven into the culture of our family. MF has created an organization that lets donors select exactly where they want their donations to be used so that in time relationships are built between the giving and the receiving families. I learn through updates from the staff and letters written by the children what is going on in the lives of the families we sponsor, and then if I choose I am able to respond to that information with a donation for a needed item. Additionally there is a very active, very committed yahoo forum where information about people in need is posted and where the members can brainstorm ideas for how to best help, often working together for a solution. It's incredible to feel like I'm truly making a difference in a person's life!

I have networked with Mayan Families for four years as we worked together to alleviate medical and educational concerns in the lake region of Guatemala. Not many organizations in Guatemala have the "staying power" and stamina for the issues in Central America like MF's has.
When my daughter was in the process of adopting her daughter from Guatemala, she was doing research on the internet and discovered Mayan Families. They have SO many worth-while projects which directly impact the people of Guatemala. Trying to provide scholarships from pre-school through the university, trying to protect the people- from abusive relationships, to providing food, housing and medical care, trying to raise awareness of humane treatment of animals and protect the environment with onil stove are only a few of the many on-going projects. When we visited Mayan Families on the pick-up trip, I was very impressed with the organization and the people involved in it. They were all very competent and caring. They carefully guard the donations they receive so that maximum benefit can be had from their resources.

I volunteered with Mayan Families in December 2009 to help with a spay and neuter clinic. They were also running a medical clinic simultaneously. The organization was well-run on meager resources and put all of their efforts into helping the community. They deserve all of the help and support they can get.
Mayan Families serves many poor families in the highlands of Guatemala. They start preschools and give children a chance to have education and get fed by encouraging others to sponsor individual children. They help give mothers training on using sewing machines. and they give micro loans to start businesses for poor families. They even have a pet animal spading project.

While visiting Guatamala in 2008 I was able to meet the families being served by the Mayan Families ...They are so well served, with respect & dignity & most importantly educating the children as well as the mothers in garment/craft industries for them to get work. It was very heartening to witness and I am now sponsoring a child that attends their San Antonio school which needs further funding. I would love to see their work flourish. I first heard about Mayan Families through a friend back in 2006, since then my wife and I have been involved with MF helping them physically and financially with their Hope for the Animals program; as well as, sponsoring a few children through their school sponsorship program. I have been in the field helping them in many ways and I know how hard the MF team work. I have also experienced the commitment and love that Sharon, Patti, Dwight and their team have towards the Guatemalan people. Not to mention that Suzie is a huge asset to their team. Cheers to Mayan Families!

I learned about Mayan Families four years ago, during the process of adopting our daughter. I liked the fact that I knew any donations I sent were in fact being distributed and used wherever needed. I also liked the fact pictures of kids and parents receiving items were always posted. This organization began small, and it's amazing how much it has grown. Those in charge of Mayan Families have done an excellent job keeping up with the growth they have experienced, both in Guatemala and here with the volunteers in the U.S. They always let us know exactly what is needed, and what should not be sent as there are some items that cannot be used. Mayan Families is organized, efficient, and run by a team of dedicated, compassionate individuals.

I have never known a charity like Mayan Families. The dedication that they put into helping the poor people in Guatemala is amazing. When I send money to them to help the family I sponsor I get photographs and letters back from my sponsored student to thank me and my family for everything that we have bought. I feel that other charities should take note from this one because some problems I had with other charities was that you were never told specifically where the money was going. Mayan Families you do, the love and support that they show the people is heartwarming. They deserve all the support and help that they can get. I love being apart of this family network. Also, if there is a delay in getting back to you MF will let you know why there was a delay. Just amazing!!!!!!!!!

I went to Guatamala in October 2010 and met an worked with Mayan families. I also sponsored a child in Elbarrenco. This has been one of the most heartwarming experiences! Everyone there helping with Mayan families are so nice and I can't wait to go back!
I spent 8 days in Panajachel with Mayan families staff, and got to serve first hand with the team. Their work is substantial in the lives of the children, seniors and community care they provide. We have sponsored children for 3 years, and are amazed at the photo journalism and photo documentation of our donations, as well as the direct communication link with our sponsored children and their immediate family. The momentum Mayan families has makes it an extremely desirable donation destination, as your giving will very quickly make an impact. I have nothing but high praises for their faith in action. Truly reflecting God's Love with their neighbors and community.

Mayan Families is a great place in Guatemala for indigenousand ladino people in the Lake Atitlan area to receive help in a LOT of different ways. They promote environmentally sound programs, like onil stoves, economically with microloans, educationally with scholarships from pre-school through university, and healthy living through visiting medical personnel and access to private doctors and nurses and medicine, water filters, dental care, classes on controlling diabetes and much more. They also are active in promoting humane care of domestic animals, with spay and neuter clinics every month. They are a fantastic organization.

In helping those that need it most, Mayan Families has shown to be a wonderful organization. Poverty and strife are mainstays with nearly all Indigenous populations in Guatemala. Mayan Families provides basic supplies, care, and education to really make a difference in the lives of those they touch.

I have been a donor and supporter of this charity since 2006. I have met one of the founders personally as well. I appreciate that every dollar donated goes to people in great need. There is a great deal of accountability, and they share results with the donors frequently. The charity has grown in the past 5 years, but it retains a personal touch. I have made it my #1 charity and intend to increase my support in the future.

I have been involved with Mayan Families for more than three years as a sponsor for a child to attend school. We receive regular updates and are able to see the difference Mayan Families makes in the lives of the communities they serve. When disasters, such as mudslides and floods, affected the region around Lake Aitlan, Mayan Families was able to respond quickly and effectively to provide shelter and necessities for families that truly had nowhere else to turn. Their preschool feeding program gives young children the chance for a healthier life, and the early education improves the chance that the child will succeed in school and not drop out. I believe every dollar I donate to Mayan Families is a dollar well spent. I only wish I could give more!

Hello, My husband and I have been sponsoring students with mayan families for 3 years. Last week we made a 10 day visit to Panajachel Guatemala to visit and work with mayan families and visit our students. Our expectations of mayan families far exceeded even what I had thought about their ministry. Firstly, the entire town knows Sharon the director by first name...they call her the "mother Theresa" of this area. We worked with them side by side at the preschool, sewing classes, feeding programs for the children, families and elderly. Getting from small village to village is quite a challenge as they have to travel up small winding roads up the mountain...many are wased away from the mud slides. That does not stop the team. Every single member of mayan families I witnessed working very hard...harder than you can imagine for the people. The highlight of my trip was visiting my sponsored students....it was as if we were part of the family. The excitement they had to meet us and they were so appreciative of our support but we felt more like relatives. I absolutely loved my families and can tell how our support really does make a difference in their lives. Just getting back from Guatemala I can say first hand this organization is worth the $5000 grant. I have told all my friends and family about our experience and am encouraging them to sponsor children...the need in this area is so great. Mayan Families is making a huge impact in the lives of the people...I've seen it!

I've watched Mayan Families amazing growth over the years while my sponsored child grows along with them. I receive letters and timely online photos of her progress and her family. Mayan Families communicates updates of progress as well as outreach for needs. I enjoy the ongoing opportunity to help both my child and the people of the Lake Atitlan community especially during this past year of such unusual struggles. A fantastic group of talented, organized and committed people. A fine example of the 'never doubt that one person can change the world' philosophy.

I sponsor 2 children thru Mayan Families and often donate to other Guatemalan families as needs arise. I'm always impressed with the professionalism, compassion and dedication shown by the Mayan Families staff. Consistent, precise communication is offered to donors and friends of Mayan Families via email, listservs, blogs and websites. When floods destroyed their own home, staff members ignored their own needs and instead quickly relocated to help their neighbors and our sponsored students who were also affected. I recommend Mayan Families to my friends and coworkers who want to make charitable donations that truly make a difference in peoples' lives.

I love Mayan Families. We sponsor a preschool student at a preschool in Panajachel and were fortunate enough to get the chance to meet her and her family on a recent trip to Guatemala. We also got to go and see one of the Mayan Families preschool in San Antonio Palopo while we were there. There is such need in this area of Guatemala and Mayan Families is there to help people as well as the animals in the area. This is such a deserving non-profit.

I recently came back from a missions trip to Panajachel and La Barranco. I was not only introduced to Mayan Families org but to Sharon and Dwight and several other leaders; and saw the great deeds they do and the great care they give. I witnessed the senior adult feeding program, a preschool in progress, a preschool being built, confidence in the eyes of mothers knowing their children would receive schooling and proper nutrition through sponsorship, and I also witnessed kindness to animals in need; spaying, neutering, and rescuing. I am proud to say I became a sponsor enabling a child to attend school. Unlike another organization I have been involved with where I sponsor two children for 5 years, I was able to have personal contact through Mayan Families . I was able to meet the child and his family and visit their home and village. I learned of their personal needs so I can be of real assistance to them. And best of all I was invited back anytime to see the improvements, the growth made from my small contributions. I cannot wait to return in a year, til then I know I can call, write to any one of the Mayan Family org workers and they will be able to tell me how my new little family are doing.

After we adopted a little girl from Guatemala we sponsored an 8yr old girl "Maria" through Mayan Families to go to school. This was 3 years ago and we have continued to sponsor her each year to go to school. We also have sent family aid as well as clothing and care packages to her and her siblings. Mayan Families is great because we have a website we can go to to see pictures of her receiving the gifts we send or the holiday food baskets. They also forward on copies of her report cards as well as drawings and personal letters. Since she does not know English, the staff at Mayan Families translates the letters before forwarding them on. Mayan Families makes it easy to donate through paypal and has registered as a nonprofit so my donations are tax deductible. I love the fact that we can help a specific family with our donations or we can choose to send our donations to a random family or different funds such as medical aid or general funds.

We worked along side many others to install stoves, pass out clothing and food in Mayan villages in the highlands above Panajachel, Guatemala. While I was mightily impressed for a week - it is sobering to realize these folks at Mayan Families are there 24/7/365 knowing the needs of the communities, working to care for families, and to provide critical help for individuals. They are amazing. They juggle priorities against resources all the while training indigenous folks by providing real work and real income.
We brought bags of food to families whose corn crop had failed the second year in a row. We passed out clothing. Shoes were the greatest need for the children. And we got to look into the beautiful brown eyes of the little boys and tell them we had no more shoes. I would have emptied my bank account to go to Walmart and buy ALL the shoes so each child could have a pair. This isn't the beaches of the coastal areas of Central Americal. This is narrow and steep rocky paths just to get to someone's little home. Their homes were often a lean-to with corregated metal, dirt floors and bedding on the floors. Shoes seemed basic but most had none.
I am home but I often think of the work that Mayan Families does with these gentle people trying to hold on to their traditions, language, arts. I know whatever $$ is sent to them will be stretched every way possible.
I volunteered for the third time with Mayan Families in Dec, 2010/Jan, 2011. I have sponsored a child through their Education program for three years, first meeting the child I sponsor on my first visit with Mayan Families in 2009. The organization had arranged to visit patients in the local hospital and give them water, crackers and stuffed animals for Christmas. One of the staff members of Mayan Families dressed up as Santa. The conditions at the hospital were horrid and depressing, and the visit from Santa and small gifts transformed people's Christmas experience. We then went on to visit a small village outside of Solola, where we handed out several hundred stuffed animals to children who otherwise would have had nothing for Christmas. I was amazed at the personal touch of the director and staff and how they quickly welcomed otherslike me to join them in their outings. The organization is incredibly accessible and allows for a high level of personal interaction between the sponsors and students and sponsors and staff. The organization focuses on immediate needs of their students and families as well as working on underlyingsocial issues and causes of poverty.

I am an adoptive parent of 3 boys from Guatemala. We have gone to Guatemala many times and helped various organizations there. My husband is an ophthalmologist so we go to do eye exams and send the glasses back. I am impressed with Mayan families and Sharon and Dwight who head this organization. I learned of Mayan families from adoption listserves that I am on about Guatemala. On our last trip, we visited Mayan Families and took donations. They have a LOT going on there, trying to help Mayan families there in various villages nearby. They also work with other charitable organizations there to provide the best possible services without duplication. I could see that Sharon and Dwight have dedicated their lives to this. They help with housing, school, medicare care, food, clothing, disaster relief, and basically every place there is a need. We have helped financially on several occasions and plan to continue doing so. Their use of the funds is very well thought out and careful. I have recommended them to other people who were looking for a reputable charity to help there and I will continue to do so.

Being a part of this amazing organization- leaves you wanting to do more.
Mayan Families does a great job here in Guatemalan of helping families in need.
They do a great job of connecting their donors to the people they are helping. We are sponsoring a specific child to attend school for a year and we will continue to sponsor him until he finishes school.

I have volunteered and am a donor with Mayan Families. The reason i love this group and will continue working with them for the rest of my life is because of the tireless desire to help everyone they possibly can. MF spend as much money as physically possible on their programs with minimal spent on overheads, fancy offices, caras , homes or their own lifestyle. The only thing I would change would be concentrating on the current projects and not taking on any new o es for at least a couple of years.

Mayan Families does amazing work in the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala for impoverished Mayan kids and their families. Providing food, clothing, school scholarships, medical aid, housing, elder care, stoves, water filters and so much more. I'm constantly amazed at what they accomplish with such a small staff.
In addition, Mayan Familes' goal of transparency is second to none. Not only do my husband and I get updated pictures of the kids we sponsor for school, but pictures of all the kids and families at event after event--a new preschool is opened and we're treated to dozens of pictures of the opening. A family gets a new house and we see the pictures. When "our family receives a tamale baskets at Christmas, we see their picture taken with their basket. When the kids get their school supplies, again their pictures are taken. My husband and I know exactly where our donation is going. And we get that wonderful connection of knowing more about "our" kids and "our" families.
Thank you Mayan Families! You guys are the best!

Mayan families is an amazing organization that has done some great work to support families in meaningful ways in the Guatemalan state of Solola, where my daughter's birth family lives. When you donate to Mayan Families, you get to see your donation make a real difference. I know first hand how great the need in that region is and they are an organization that is making a deliberate and effective impact in the lives of many Guatemalan families.
In addition, when my family was visiting my daughter's birth family in the region, my son became ill. The Mayan Families staff helped get us to a pharmacy where we could buy the medicine we needed to help him.

I recently spent a month in Panajachel, Guatemala and visited Mayan Families. Dwight, the director, spoke with our small group about the work of Mayan Families. I was especially impressed by the 360 degree approach that this organization uses to address the poverty of the local Mayan population. Their efforts at fund raising is word of mouth and their gratitude for even the smallest of gifts was truly inspiring. Dwight enthusiastically commented that even a $25 gift from a friend of mine would make a huge difference in their work. Their initiative to support children in going to school is a critical aspect of their work . Educating the children is the only possibility of creating a future for them that isn't one of total poverty, and malnutrition.

I first became involved with Mayan Families in 2006 and I was able to visit with them and my sponsored student a few months later. I was fortunate to return last year to spend a week volunteering with them and I cannot praise them enough for their hard work, long hours and above all, their caring personal commitment with such upbeat can do attitudes among so much poverty and despair. It’s been a pleasure to watch them grow as an organization and expand their programs to help so many indigenous poor in both short term and permanent ways.
I love all the hard work Mayan Families does. I especially like how they keep someone like me informed of what is happening and how I can help
Mayan family’s is amazing! The people who run this organization are true angels. They care about everyone from children, the elderly, adults and animals. I have been to Guatemala three times and have seen the poverty that exists. So many of this Mayan family’s have hope knowing that a sponsor may be found for their child or that a child’s ill parent may be able to seek medical treatment. Perhaps you may be a Mayan family that is fortunate enough to receive a Mother’s day basket, Christmas basket, education for your children, a mattress to sleep on, food to eat, a stove, a filter so that you may have clean water to drink from. These are all things we take for granite, but Mayan family’s help provide these items to the most needy family’s. There is no better gift than helping someone in need and I know my donations are spent accordingly and updates are always provided on their web-site and through e-mail. Please help Mayan family’s continue to do God’s will.
We love this charity, it is amazing! They give us so many opportunities to provide food and other necessities to people in need in Guatemala. They provide pictures showing the people receiving the food so you really know who you are helping. I adopted a child from Guatemala six years ago and have been working with Mayan Families ever since. They are a blessing.
While visiting Guatemala with some friends from another NGO, we were fortunate to spend an afternoon with Mayan Families, learning about their work. Hearts of Gold!! They give their all to the poor people of Guatemala, helping in a wide variety of ways. We visited a sewing center where the women not only learn a trade, but are given a sewing machine upon graduation so they have the tools needed to support themselves through their work. This is true sustainable development work.
I became involved with Mayan Families after the adoption of my daughter from Guatemala in 2009. My family and I sponsor 3 students through Mayan Families and also send money for food for these families on occasion, as well. The staff is great as keeping us up-to-date with e-mail updates, photos, report cards, and letters/drawings from the students. I've also run several fundraisers to support this organization for additional donations. The staff is wonderful to correspond with and work with.
We have been a sponsor to a student and have provided frequent gifts as well. I love this organization because it is personal. I get to see the effects we are having through report cards, photos, and email updates. The staff is amazing and always has a quick and thoughtful response to any requests or questions. I wish I could give them 100 stars!
While we were in process adopting our child from Guatemala many times we would bring down rubbermaid containers to Guatemala containing clothing, toiletries, baby items, candy, books etc. to be given to needy families. Mayan Families was always punctual and professional and I always felt like the items we took the time to bring down with us on visit trips to see our daughter we being put to good if not great use. In addition, I have had dealings with Mayan Families and their animal welfare program and at one time almost transported a dog for them to the USA however, they found someone closer to where the dog's permanent home was going to be. Bottomline, this organization contains "no fat" and they do great great work! Kudos to Mayan Families!!!

I have been impressed with the professionalism of this organization! I have donated tamal baskets and am now sponsoring a child. Their website is very informative and I always get a quick response to my questions. This organization is the best way to have a fast/direct impact on the individual lives of people who are living in poverty without wasting money on overhead and marketing! Highly recommend Mayan Families to all!
In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Agatha here in Guatemala, Mayan Families gathered extensive amounts of food and distributed it to families in rural Mayan villages who had had their houses destroyed by the storm. I noted that the organization put a great emphasis on ensuring that their aid was given to the true victims of the storm, and that the aid met the most pressing needs of those they were serving. Since most of the Mayan Families staff are indigenous Guatemalans from the local communities, this was a much easier task for them to accomplish than had it been done by an outside organization wtihout connections locally.

I have followed Mayan Families for a few years, and donated many times, though I have not yet sponsored a family or child. I think they are a very innovative program and have done a lot to help many people with the many needs in the community-- from elder feeding programs, to family medical help, to student sponsorship to animal spay and neuter clinics-- they do so much in the community. They also take many pictures and have transparency via their website, blogs and digital photo archives.
I have always found this organization to be great, the staff friendly and organized and the help they provide to be wonderful!

Mayan Families is an organization which helps the indigenous people in Guatemala. The people who live in Guatemala are poor, have no resources and no money. They can barely survive. They cannot afford drinking water, housing. Mayan families provides services for these people to help them receive food, medical services, safe drinking water, sponsor children to attend school, and many many more services. They have built preschools, sponsored feeding programs for children, families and elderly. All of their work is done through donations, people sending items and money to their organization. They have dedicated their lives to help these people who are just trying to survive and be able to feed themselves and their children. And they do this solely through donations. They are an incredible organization whose only goal is to truly help the people who cannot help themselves due to extreme poverty.

I became active with the Mayan Families organization after the adoption of my first child in 2004. Since then I have particpated from afar by being a member of their Yahoo group and making donations of money and items to assist them with their work. Two years ago, I started sponsoring a child's education through their organization and have sent food baskets and gifts to the child's family for special occasions. All of this has been successfully directed by the MF staff. I have been so impressed with their dedication and committment to the less fortunate of Guatemala. I have used their work as an example to my two young children on how to give back to their birth country and this summer, we hope to visit the MF staff and our sponsored student during our family vacation.

Unless one has seen the poverty of other contries, one can not understand the importance of any help these families get from anyone let alone the magnitude of the help provided by Mayan Families
Mayan Families is one of my favorite non-profits because I know that every penny I send goes directly to help the people who need it, and not to fancy advertising or overhead. It is a blessing to see photos of those you support and know you've actually made a difference in their lives. We just love MF and will continue to support them!
I am the mom of two children we adopted in Guatemala. We love this country, and love the people of Guatemala. The poverty is staggering, and we wanted a way to help. I learned about Mayan Families soon after coming home with our children, and I have contributed to their wonderful charity several times.
I love the detailed updates they give, and the customer service is excellent. I receive personal emails after I donate, so I know they received my contribution.
I love what Mayan FAmilies does, and I will continue to support them in the future. When my children are much older, I hope our whole family can volunteer with them.

I work at a major public university studying the effects of clean water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene practices on the health of people in developing countries. A recent masters student was interested in studying the effectiveness of Mayan Families' water flter program, so I contacted the director to ask about cooperation. Although the staff there was swamped with activities related to Christmas dontations and the start of school, the director found time to learn about our program and needs and enthusiastically put her support behind our project.
I am moitviated to write such a posative review because of the expressed genuine desire for their group to get the true answer and not necessarily one that might be more appealing to donors. We have not completed the project, so we don't know what the answer will be, but I am thrilled that their support was given so freely and without contingencies.
I think this goes beyond just water and sanitation and demonstrates this organization is looking for real results based on evidence. Their effective use of donations, extensive local staff, international partners, and volunteers means all contributions have a multaplicative effect.

Becoming involved in Mayan Families is one of the best decisions I ever made. We sponsor a child to attend school. I love seeing....the daily pictures they post of their work, the letters I receive from our child, sending gifts and food to her family, the ability to volunteer in their efforts, and the message board where you can communicate with other donors/volunteers/employees. My greatest Christmas gift this year was receiving an email on Christmas Eve from Mayan Families saying my sponsored child's website was updated and seeing pictures of her receiving their tamale basket and holding the picture my daughter drew her. I love this organization. They have given me so much!!

I was first made aware of this wonderful organization when one of my friends from college traveled to Guatemala and maintained a blog about the nonprofits she was working with. I was startled to learn just how far a little money goes in Guatemala, and how many different ways that little bit of money can be used to help people.
I have donated to Mayan Families several times, most recently when they sent me an email about the Valentine's day project they are doing, where a child from the San Antonio Feeding program will design a card for a $10 donation. I wasn't interested in the card so much as what the Feeding program was and I was impressed by the variety of services they offer to the children (a hot meal, homework help, etc).
I really believe they are in a position to empower the lives of the people they serve. And that's why I keep donating.

I have been sponsoring a student through Mayan Families for 3 years now and I can tell you that this is a top notch organization. They are always available to answer questions, and they frequently make post related to your sponsored student/family on the sponsor webpage in order to kee you up to date. I haven't gone to visit yet, however I plan to do so this fall. I am able to see how my sponsorship and this organization are making a difference in the lives of the indigenous Mayan people of Guatemala.

I was referred to Mayan Families when visiting a friend in Panajachel, Guatemala and I have continued to be impressed with the commitment of their volunteers & staff and breadth of their programs: from educating & feeding school children to caring for the elderly and filling the gaps in between (warm blankets, stoves, water filters, medicine to mention only a few) Mayan Families does an admirable job with very little. And, they have not forgotten animals which shows the depth of their compassion. I am honored to support their work.

This program allows you that "sense" of having a personal connection as a donor, in a format ie. internet, that doesn't necessearily promote a feeling of connectedness.
It is this sense of connection that is important to us as donors. We will be giving in the future specifically to this organization because of the feeling of unity their website and services provide.

We are parents of a son adopted from Guatemala about 11 years ago. We wanted to give back to the country, and discoverd Mayan Families, a small non-profit in the Highlands of Guatemala. We began with school sponsorship of one child about 4 years ago, and began sponsoring his 4 year old brother last year. The people who set up Mayan families and their largely indigenous staff are hard working, and go out of their way to help many impoverished people. Over 1600 children from preschool to university are able to go to school.

Our family sponsors a Mayan Family- family to help them rise above proverty through the donations. Upon visiting the coutry once, we requested a visit with our sponsored family. The staff at Mayan Family did not hesitate to arrange the meeting for us. After talking we became curious about our sponsored family living conditions and again Mayan Family wasted no time in arranging transportation for us. We found our family was living well except every child had an obvious infection conjunctivitis that was terrible. The staff at Mayan Family was vital in making sure every member of the family received the necessary antibiotic treatments. 1 month later we received progress report and a picture of the children. Their eye were bright and filled with health color and outlook about their future, thanks to Mayan Family.

I have been involved with Mayan Families for more than 3 years now. I have sponsored up to 6 children for school at one time because I feel so passionately about the work they do. I have been involved with other organizations but Mayan Families is very different. They are hands on and if I have any concerns or questions, I can email any number of people and get information based on real contact with Mayan families. Many of us stay up to date and connected to them via Mayan Families Connections on Yahoo and often they post about a specific need or crisis. As a group, we all reach out and make changes happen. We built houses, give lifesaving medical treatment, feel the elderly, buy beds, food, water filters...the list goes on and on. My heart is constantly being tugged to give more and more because their work is so vital and we see amazing results. This is THE best organization...I'm proud to be a part of it.

I have been involved with Mayan Families for 3+ years, and I am currently sponsoring 3 siblings so they can attend school. I also coordinate several shipments each year from the U.S. of student care packages and general distribution items for MF. I am continuously awed by the amount of work that the MF staff is able to accomplish. They are having such a positive effect on the local community - through providing medical care, helping students attend school, managing preschools, assisting the elderly, helping sterilize pets, etc. What I really find great about MF is how communicative they are with donors and sponsors. I receive not only frequent updates on my sponsored students but also on what is going on in general. They are SO many ways to contribute to the good deeds that MF does, and MF does not push anyone to contribute - they just share information and let each donor decide what they want/can do.

Why do I donate to and support Mayan Families? Trust. The orginazation communicates through email, blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Picasa. They let their donors know the specific needs of the children, families, elderly and animals on a daily basis, so we can play a vital role in assisting the community everyday and at the time of a crisis The staff of this organization works tirelessly to help their community and to make sure the donors are kept up-to-date by pictures and emails to know exactly where the money is being used. Our family sponsors a little girl so she can go to school and get an education. I feel we are helping the world one family at a time. Mayan Families lets us know what the needs are for her and her family so we can help them too. I love seeing the pictures of our student holding her backpack and new shoes at the beginning of the school year. I feel so proud of her when we get the copy of her report card and see how hard she is working to get an education. Another favorite picture is of the family receiving their tamale basket during the holidays. Mayan Families supplied, through the donations of their supporters, 1,600 tamale baskets to families in December. The families treasure these baskets because it gives them something special to eat at Christmas. People wait all day in line to receive these baskets that were put together lovingly by the staff of Mayan Families and their volunteers. We donate money to the general fund to help with some of the many ongoing projects. They invite doctors, dentists, nurses, teachers, and anyone who can come to visit them and help for a day, week, month or longer. Their primary mission is to improve the lives of people in need. Mayan Families shows respect, compassion, love, support and trust to the people of Guatemala and for this I am grateful.

I recently had the awesome opportunity to visit Guatemala for the first time with a group from my church and spent some time with Sharon from Mayan Families. We made home visits with Sharon to several of the families that they sponsor and helped to pass out some supplies the families needed. It was very heart warming to see how this program is working to make a huge difference in each of the families situations. The people were so thankful for the smallest of items they received. I plan to return in the future to help Sharon and her staff in any way I can.

Tbey are an excellent grass roots charity that saves many lives in guatemala. We sponsor several children and are always updated and allowed to see what a difference a group of people can make. Tbey are very impressive.
What a wonderful organization! A year and a half ago 2 friends and I decided to sponsor a Guatemalan child and to pay for her schooling, just $180 a year. Since then, thanks to Mayan Families, I have become more and more connected with this child, a young girl named Lory. They post photos of her on-line every month or so, (including pictures of her report card!) and they let me know how her family is doing. I get crayon drawings Lory makes in school to hang on my walls and thank you notes from her (translated for me). When a special holiday is coming up they will provide food baskets for Lory's family for a very small donation, and I have been able to send boxes of clothing and gifts for Lory's birthday. My reward is always a picture of Lory receiving the food basket or my gift with a big smile. Lory calls me godmother, and I feel blessed that Mayan Families has given me this wonderful god-daughter. They do a terrific job of helping many poor Guatemalan children at the same time that they are bringing some happiness into my life.
I could never say in words how much I respect and appreciate these people. They not only service the poor of Guatemala, they work very hard to keep us, the sponsors, informed of all they do. Every day their information is updated through blogs and e-groups, and any question I have ever asked was answered the same day. And the photos! It seems each stage of their programs is journaled for us and history with their strict photo keeping.
MayanFamilies has said that they would like to use this money for a preschool, which I know can only be a blessing in that community.
I sure hope they win!

As the parents of two children adopted from Guatemala, we were looking for a way to give back to the country of their birth. We currently sponsor a number of children for school through Mayan Families. We have also provided financial support for families in need of assistance with housing, food or medical . As someone who has been involved with many nonprofit organizations, I have found Mayan Families to be extremely transparent in showing donors how their contributions are utilized. The staff is responsive to and respectful of donors. They are truely making a tremendous difference in the lives of the people of the area who have so little and have seen so much hardship. I had the pleasure to meet several staff members on a recent trip to Guatemala. They went out of their way to facilitate a meeting with one of my sponsored children ( including a visit to her home, a trip to buy shoes and lunch with her father.) I was touched by the generousity of spirit in which they offered their time as well as the respectful and supportive attitude shown to our sponsored student and her family. Time and time again , I have seen evidence of their tireless efforts in support of those they serve. I look forward to working with Mayan Families in the future.

I am a member of several listservs whose members share a common concern for Guatemala. On these listservs I have read about the amazing work of Mayan Families through firsthand testimonials of volunteers and other contributors as well as those who have sought and received help for loved ones in Guatemala. I have only heard high praise about Mayan Families and have never heard a bad word.
As the parents of a daughter adopted from Guatemala, we looked for an opportunity to give back to her country. We have be so very impressed with this charity. We sponsor 2 children to enable them to go to school. We have also donated money for food. We receive hand drawn pictures and notes from the children we sponsor. We have sent gifts of clothes and other items and been able to see photos of these gifte being opened. I can not think of any other charity with this extremely personal touch.

I first came in contact with Mayan Families when I began sponsoring a couple of children through them to attend school. I was immediately impressed with the way the charity is respectful of the people, working within the community and within the culture and not as outsiders stepping in with what they "think" should be. I was also impressed with the way they kept in contact with me as a sponsor, sending me copies of my sponsored child's report card, sending me photos of my child receiving their school supplies and keeping me updated on my sponsored child's situation. I was so impressed with the results I was seeing Mayan Famlies accomplish that I went from sponsoring a couple of children to sponsoring 10 children.
I keep updated with the activities at Mayan Families through their web sites and blogs. I became aware that they were raising money to build a community center in the community of San Jorge, Guatemala. Mayan Families saw a need for a preschool in this community. Many of the families in this community speak a local Mayan language in their homes. When their children began school, which is taught in Spanish, they immediately fell behind due to the language barrier and many would drop out of school early. The community center would serve as a preschool and would begin teaching the children Spanish, which would allow them greater success in school and employment within Guatemala. My church assisted in raising the money for this center. Mayan Families involved the community in the construction of this center and kept my church updated on its progress. Eight members of my church traveled to Guatemala to view the center during its construction. My group was not only impressed with the center but with the staff of Mayan Families. Every staff member had a dedication to their work and a selflessness. They truly love the people they serve. While visiting the charity, I saw one of the founders of the charity grab a sweater out of her daughter's closet to give to a child when she noticed how cold the child was and the charity did not have a sweater to fit her. The founder did not know I was watching this event transpire. Several of the staff members even volunteered their time on their day off to assist me in a volunteering endevour I was undertaking.
The community center in San Jorge now holds a very active preschool and will soon hold an afterschool program for students needing assistance with their homework. The center is a sanitary location for medical and dental clinics and a meeting location for community groups. My church could not be more happy with the results...with the lovely building and with all of the positive ways the building is serving the community. The medical clinics held in the center have actually saved lives.

Mayan Families is a wonderful charity. Our family has sponsored pre-school age children for several years, and we look forward to many more years. It feels very worthwhile to give some of our resources to those who have so little, and education of the children is so important.

My husband & I adopted a baby from Guatemala in November 2008. We were able to spend a few days touring the area; experiencing the plight of people who always have a gracious smile on their face. In our travels we learned that the vast majority ( like 75%) of the population is illiterate.
To make matters worse, volcanno erruptions and torrential rains in 2009 devistated the homes and fields in leaving many families homeless and without a means to support themselves.
Myan Families lets families like mine give back to the people who gave us our children. I can only pray that the food baskets I've donated made it's way to our child's birth family.
Additionally, Mayan Families offers the opportunity to sponsor a stunt so he/she can go to school and break the cycle of poverty.
A $5,000.00 donation would allow Mayan Families to fund the restoration of preschool and a feeding program.
Mayan Families is truely teaching the kind people of Guatemala how to fish and not just giving them a free meal.
Please award your prize to this most deserving charity.

It is hard to find an organization that is as upfront with what they do with their money as Mayan Families. Our family has donated and we have friends who have volunteered with them and their reputation is always outstanding. The money goes directly to those in need, whether that be ground corn and beans for starving people, materials for children to go to school, medical care for those who can't afford it or many, many other necessary things for the people's they serve survival.

Mayan Families is an outstanding organization that serves the impoverished Mayan population in the highlands of Guatemala through educational, nutritional, medical, housing and other support. We have supported them with physical and financial donations for six years and could not be more happy with the service they provide to the population they serve, as well as the information they share with the donors. We receive letters from the students we support as well as copies of their report cards, and updates and photographs through the Mayan Families website. It is a fantastic organization.

We've been supporting several students through Mayan Families. They are teh only organization that I've worked with to provide such personalized donor support including email updates from sponsors and opportunities to celebrate special events in the children't lives. They welcome sponsors to visit. They provide a wealth of services to those in desperate need - and it all started because a group of people cared. That care has grown and real lives are changed - and as a donor I'm humbled to be a part of that change.

Mayan Families is the real deal. The headquarters in Panajachel is a busy place where Sharon and the army of volunteers address the problems of the steady stream of people from surrounding villages in need. Sharon provides a critical link between donors interested in helping and those who desperately need the help. One summer she suggested we bring down shoes for children which we did. My daughter helped hand them out in a small local village to children who were thrilled at getting a new pair of (used) shoes that actually fit. In one afternoon trip, we handed out bags of shoes, hundreds of baby chicks to women entrepreneurs and then helped a visiting dental group who spoke no spanish set up a dental clinic. Through Mayan Families the needs of local people are accurately identified and the assistance provided by people who want to help is appropriately targeted and effective. I wish the hundreds of sponsors of the school children could meet their sponsored students in person and receive the extreme gratitude of the parents, as I have been able to do.

My family has sponsored one or two Guatemalan students via Mayan Families (MF) for three years now. One of the students dropped out, but the other has been "our" student continuously. My daughter writes to her and gets letters back, we get occasional updates from MF about our student's family, and whenever we ask we get additional info and updates. As donors we receive various bulk emails about MF projects and needs, which we feel no pressure to respond to, i.e. they do not approach us individually and make saying "no" hard -- MF seems to respect that their donors will want to know what is needed but will choose what they do based on their own situation. We have responded to calls to sponsor food baskets, and received photos of the recipients with the baskets. We expect to continue our student sponsorship until she graduates (now in 4th grade), and we hope to visit our sponsored student later this year when we go to Guatemala -- MF has offered to facilitate our meeting our student, and we are hoping to spend some time slotting in to their other projects as volunteers for part of the time we are there.

I had the wonderful opportunity of working with Mayan Families in Dec 2010 and visited many of the projects/villages that they support. They do amazing work and have an amazing staff. The staff works long hours and only has the best interest of those that they serve in their hearts. I have seen the positive effects that they have had in the lives of the children and families that they serve. Without their services, many children would not receive a healthy meal every day; many would not have a chance to receive any schooling. This is an amazing organization that is making a difference in the lives of 1000's in Guatemala.

Mayan Families is an amazing grass roots group. I have taken a group of veterinarians and volunteers for the past three years where we perform 4 days of spay and neuter clinics. We also work with a local veterinarian and the Guatemalan vet students. We have performed 417 surgeries over the past 3 years and plan to continue every year. They have done an awesome job in creating awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering the animals as well as the importance of treating animals humanely. The MF founders, staff and volunteers are all hands on during our week stay. It is amazing all that they accomplish and the dedication that they have for the people and the animals of Guatemala.

To whom it may concern;
First of all, the work that this organization is unbelieveable. The
clinics that they conduct are providing great services to the needy.
Secondly, the schools that are provided to the children does more than
give them an education. They help with clothes and supplies and
probably most importantly it provides food and security for the
children. These schools can be the catalyst that provides these
future Guatemala's a way out of their provery.
Finally, I can not say enough about this organization and the personal
touch that I have come to know. They make such a difference on
a daily basis to the people in Guatemala. I am so blessed to
have found this organization and to have conducted business
with such a dynamic and honest organization as Mayan Families.
Your consideration of Mayan Families is greatly appreciated.Thank
you for letting me express my TRUE feelings of the real work that
Mayan Famillies does.

Mayan Families is exceptional.. our church started sponsoring a family, and that is when i found this little girl Brenda (1078).. I sponsored her and my life changed. Mayan families posts picutres of the children getting our packages or their new shoes or their school supplies.. I went down in December 2010 and the staff did everything humanly posibble to help my friend and I to visit the families we sponsor. Two translators everytime we went to a house, school party. This was amongst the Christmas parties at the schools, Peace Corp groups coming in and a spay clinic. The staff is tireless.. They sort clothes, find people to feed the elderly, feed families who lost a parent, find sponsors for everychild possible, and post those picutres to each persons page. They are the most amazing group I have ever seen or worked with. I can't wait to go back and to continue to keep up with things through the blog. They have such a great following that we all work hard to keep them going. We came home with much more than we gave because of the people being so gratful, that is the staff, the mayan people, the people you meet in the street. They help sponsor 1600 children.. and I don't know how many people are in elder care..It is just mind boggling how all this gets done. It is a really fantastic group.

My family currently sponsor a student through Mayan Families in Guatemala. Mayan Families helps operate 5 pre-schools, feeding programs and sponsorship opprotunities that allow children to attend school in Guatemala. The orginizers of Mayan Families live and work in Guatemala and provide weekly updates on what is happening in and around the various programs that they operate. In addition to their human work they also do animal advocacy which included a spay and neuter clinic. Guatemala is a very poor country and we believe that Mayan Families provides a variety of resources both to the young, old and animals that is desparately needed.

I started volunteering with Mayan Families after one of our children was killed. It was a way to deal with the pain and help other children finish their education. Currently I sponsor two students for education and assist other families with food and other necessities. In the past year I have visited and volunteered with Mayan Families four times and plan to return several times each year. It is amazing how much they do for their community through education, medical, potable water, safe wood-burning stoves, elder care, animal welfare, etc. They are empowering their clients to change their lives and the energy and determination of both staff and volunteers is both amazing and inspiring.

I have been both a volunteer and a donor since 2006, when I first learned about Mayan Families and met Sharon. I was living in Antigua during the adoption of my two children, and was looking for a way to give back a little to the country and people who had given me so much. The first few times I visited Sharon she was accomodating and enthusiastic as she showed me around, introduced me to villages and families, and to many of MF's programs. From the onset I was very impressed with the breadth of her vision, her commitment and amazing empathy, and her ability to generate trust and loyalty in the staff and in the many donors and volunteers who make their work possible. In the five years snce I became involved with them, the organization has grown enormously, as have the number of programs and people they serve . I think they have managed this growth extremely well and seem to do a great job of always making it -- whatever it happens to be at the moment -- happen!

My family and I recently returned from a visit to Mayan Families. It is not an exaggeration to say how much this trip changed our lives. We have been donors to Mayan Families for nearly four years and I was already a fan, but meeting Sharon and Dwight (the leaders of the organization) and seeing their projects first hand cemented my appreciation of Mayan Families.
As a professional fundraiser for nonprofit organizations, I am especially impressed with the way that Mayan Families is managed. Their budget is extremely lean and Dwight and Sharon have the best interests of the Mayan people at heart. There is no waste and the small staff is paid a fair yet conservative wage.
Mayan Families in now among my top three philanthropic priorities.
The founders of Mayan Families, Dwight and Sharon were members of our Unitarian church in San Diego, so we were curious to see what drew them to Guatemala a few years ago. This Christmas my wfe Maureen and I volunteered to help distribute food baskets, shoes, clothes and matresses to some very destitute Mayan folks in Panachel and in the refugee [mudslide refugees] tent villages. It was deeply gratifying to participate first hand and to see how grateful the moms and kids were when they got their gifts. We came to realize Christmas was just a blip, although a big one, for Mayan Families. For 365 days a year they help in so many ways,eg., indigeneous fabrics, clothes and art, folkloric dancing, education [ we joined to sponsor a hs Mayan student for $450/year making it possible to attend school for a year], sex education and birth control, health care and more. There are no limits what Dwight, Sharon and about 30 volunteers try to accomplish. Every effort is made to be transparent so the doners know where their money went. Administrative costs are rock bottom low, so every donation gets used effeciently. Its a one of the best small ngo's that is making a big difference inindividual lives. Almost all donations are small and come via word of mouth from people like us contacting their friends and churches in the US, Canada and Europe.
I think I can honestly say that becoming involved in Mayan Families changed my life. I went from being someone who loved to travel to exotic places without giving back much to someone who is now acutely concerned with the challenges faced by people in those lands. But more than that, I have a way to give back, join a fantastic donor/volunteer community, and actually do something to help.
My husband and I went down to Guatemala twice to see Mayan Families. I wrote a full account of those trips on my blog:
http://gonnamakeachange.blogspot.com/2008/06/guatemala-trip-roundup.html

I would wholeheartedly recommend Mayan Families to anyone!
We have been living in the community where Mayan family is based for many years and know the founders and their family personally. What I have seen them do over the years cannot properly be described in words: Their dedication, selflessness and competence always blows my mind. Apart from having great ideas and knowing where help is needed most, they follow through with every great project they plan, are well organized and very well presented on the internet and locally. They follow up on projects so that you can see where the money or physical help you provided went. I have recommended Mayan Families to many friends and family memebers as an organization that can be fully trusted, knowing that the money you give really goes where it is supposed to. I am honestly impressed by Mayan Families.
I thought Mayan Families gave him everything I ordered for him, (example: a bed, food, etc) - but, I wanted to make sure.
In May of 2008, my son along with 4 others went to visit Mayan Families. Long story short, I was impressed by the dedication to the Mayan Families team. While we were there we noticed Mayan Families workers going above and beyond helping the people in Panahachel and surrounding areas. When people would show up out the the blue for help, Mayan Families was there for them, day or night.
Sharron of Mayan Families is warm, giving and very hard working. All of the workers were friendly, compassionate and loved what they do, which is helping poor people in Guatemala on a daily basis - rain or shine.
I cannot wait to go back to visit Mayan Families and the wonderful people of Guatemala.
I got involved with MF after our daughter's adoption was complete. We wanted to find a way to give back to her birthcountry that had given us so much. At first I fell in love with a girl to sponsor for school. We now sponsor 5 girls for school an send food, clothing and other aid to them and the general public throughout the year. This led to joining the MF connection Yahoo group. Through that group we have done all sorts of fundraising from paying for funerals to Bucks for Clucks; the annual chicken drive! We have sent huge shipments of donations. I have even started a website selling jewelry with the profits going entirely to Mayan Families. I was honored to have visited Panajachel, Guatemala in July of 08. Sharon and the entire staff work ceaselessly to do whatever humanly possible for the people of Guatemala. Basically my entire life revolves around MF and planning what I can do next. If ever there was a person I would call my "hero" it would be Sharon Smart Poage one of the founders of Mayan Families. Sharon opens her home not only to the needy people who are served by Mayan Families but to all who volunteer and visit.
Our Men's group collects money each month when we get together to support the excellent work of Mayan Families. Their impeccable organization puts families first and they are unflagging in their efforts, care, compassion and energy.
Recently visited and volunteered with Mayan Families for 2 weeks. Going out with the staff on the Elderly Feeding Program and visiting the preschools. I also sponsor a student in one of the preschools thru Mayan Families. This is a great organization. Can't wait to work with them again very soon.

I'm currently a volunteer at Mayan Families, and will spend about three months working here. I've been working with the Family Aid program, interviewing families in crisis and then writing content to help raise donations to help them. I've gotten to see firsthand the customs, living situations, and problems of the indigenous communities in this area. It has absolutely been a life-changing experience -- volunteers looking to get real experience working with the people of Guatemala would do well to consider coming to work for Mayan Families. There is no shortage of work, no matter what field you specialize in (or even if you don't specialize in anything in particular!), and this is an area with a true, desperate amount of need.
I've been hearing about the work of Mayan Families from my niece, who is a volunteer there this month. I'm so impressed by the variety of efforts they make on behalf of the sick, the hungry, the aged, the children and the homeless in their community. A wide variety of services helping destitute people. Thank you, Mayan Families.
I have been following the stories of individuals and families posted on the Mayan Families website. My daughter went to Guatemala to teach English so the children would have a better chance of employment and self-sufficiency. A worthy effort, but the people in the region served by Mayan Families are struggling just to SURVIVE. Children can't stay in school because the $.50 a day they might make is needed by their family. They have one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. I recently donated to help a young mother with 4 children, abandoned by her husband (an all too common occurrence) have a house built. This can be done for $750 !!! This was a very small home on a tiny rented lot -- but it is a palace to this family. Mayan Families has proven themselves to be one of those organizations completely devoid of 'fluff'. You can be confident that your donations are making a huge difference in these families' lives.
I have spent the past two months as a volunteer for Mayan Families, and I've seen firsthand the importance of their role in Panajachel and the surrounding towns. Since I've been here, I've seen more than one life saved, and many made much better, by the work that this organization does. You can be sure that any support sent here will be quickly put to great use by a very dedicated staff.
Working with Mayan Families was a rewarding and life changing experience. They were very helpful in attempting to direct our efforts and expertise to help the most individuals that were in the most need. They made us feel extremely welcome, and appreciated.
These people are really amazing. Seem to be very active, with a lot of direct involvement both in and from the communities around Lake Aititlan that they serve. I had a terrific experience working with them and would highly recommend them to anyone interested
I had the opportunity to work with Mayan Families for a few days in October as we distributed aid to families affected by landslides and flooding. They are helping in such a huge range of different ways it is staggering - this is one of the most proactive charities I have ever come across. Witnessing what they do first hand I can only admire their commitment, optimism and pragmatism in the face of a challenging situation. They were so helpful in helping us acheive our goals during our short time in Guatemala.
I have always enjoyed my time with this great group of individuals. They are truly committed to helping better the lives of those most in need. I have worked with them once a year since they started, and have seen them grow exponentially in size. Their employees mainly consist of local Guatemalans who use their intimacy with the community to discover those most in need of aid.
Volunteering for Mayan Families was such a great experience for me. I learned lots, and had the priviledge of giving back to others. They are a great organization to volunteer with!!
We have worked with Mayan Families for 6 years and have watched them grow. The need is so great in this part of the word and they react to that need, instantly. They have their finger on the heartbeat of what is needed and they provide whatever they can, however they can, as fast as possible. They also provide steady work for 40 indigenous people. This is great. Mayan Families doesn't stand on pomp and ceremony. They are not about how it looks to others. They are the real thing with their heart in the right place at all times. I will continue to have my organization (Mayan Families Canada) work exclusively with them for years to come
Volunteering with Mayan Families was an incredible experience! I learned so much about Guatemala and had the opportunity to help many people through the many great programs run by Mayan Families. The staff and volunteers at Mayan Families have such big hearts for the people of Guatemala and are doing great things in the country. It is really amazing how many students are able to go to school through the sponsorship program. Many kids are very loved by their sponsors.
What I found so impressive about this organization is their commitment to help as many people as possible in concrete and sustainable ways. The staff both paid and volunteer were committed to helping the people as much as they could, but also worked to help impower the people to be able to build a better life for themselves. In other words, we weren't just handing out, we were helping people to structure their lives and make choices that they could eventually sustain on their own.
Life changing wouldn't be enough to describe the amazing experiences I had in Guatemala. I have worked with and known the people involved with Mayan Families for many years. I have found this Non-profit Mayan families to be outstanding and a very valuable resource to the Mayan Indigenous communities that they serve in the Highlands of Guatemala. It is a Hard working and efficient organization that is underfunded for all of the fine work that they do. I assisted with
Mayan Families is an NGO that does allot with very little funding. Mayan runs a vast amount of projects ranging from education to construction I personally witnessed Two of the projects, the first was dentistry. I wondered in to the clinic that had been set up by Mayan Families for local children. In Guatemala there is very little fluoride in the water so all the children are given fluoride treatments as well as having their teeth examined by a qualified dentist. by 2pm in the afternoon 187 children had arrived to have free help that they would not get without Mayan families. The second project I witnessed was a project involving street animals. Mayan helps injured or unwell animals often from the street, nurses them back to health and then does its best to re home them. I stumbled upon Mayan by chance, after seeing the good they do first hand I intend to become involved in anyway I can.
'Mayan Families' offers real and sustainable solutions for the many issues faced by impoverished Guatemalan families. The small organisation covers an impressive and comprehensive range of programs that provide essential skills, medical care, educational programes and animal welfare to the community in the Panajachel area. I was welcomed into the charity with open arms and any skills that I could provide were greatly recieved. The organisation is the perfect example of selfless charitable work; the organisation is run by the kindness of others and can only be continued to be mantained by the devotion of its staff. I am planning to return next summer as a volunteer and work for a longer period. I am also plan to organise promotional ideas in my home town. A fantastic charity that does so much for a community in great need.
This is a wonderful grass-roots organization that helps many of the neediest families in the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala. The people who run the organization live there and really know the needs of those they serve.
Hands-on programs for education, health, shelter, health, animal welfare. I sponsor two students' education and have donated items such as an Onil stove, water filter, food and clothing. This organization stands out because it respects the culture of the indigenous Maya who are the majority of the population they serve and most of their employees are Guatemalan. The provision of water filters and Onil stoves are major contributors to improving health in the area.
In April 2010, I went to Guatemala with my two teen-age kids and two of their friends to volunteer with Mayan Families for one week. From the moment that we arrived, we were made to feel welcome. We were kept busy installing Onil stoves, working in the pre-schools, handing out donations, meeting our sponsored students and helping with the spay and neuter clinic. In July 2010, I returned for two more weeks with all three of my kids, including my college age daughter, and a friend. We arrived several weeks after Tropical Storm Agatha, but the effects of the damage were still very apparent. The need for the programs offered by Mayan Families is even greater now than ever. Sharon, Dwight and all the staff are caring, respectful and responsive to the needs of the Mayan community. They are truly dedicated to helping improve the lives of the desperately poor people that they serve. There is so much work to be done and I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing organization as Mayan Families.
Mayan Families works directly with very impoversihed families. They allow their donors to also have a personal relationship with the families. We sponsor a child for school and also help his family with food, water filter, etc. They are an amazing group.
I have supported the Mayan Families student sponsorship program for two years which enables Mayan children to attend school. One of the very fine parts of the program is in the informational where sponsors are informed through email pictures of their students and families receiving assistance. My on site experience in Guatemala revealed a dedication of staff that carried through even into lunch time where talk, instead of being chit chat, centered on service to the people.
it was an amazing adventure it all started with a great party from the kids who did a tradicional dance for us, and for a week i was part of the elderly feeding program, that was very entertaining to see the elderly and get to taste the delicious food they had, and i get to built many stoves for diferent familys, tahat was a real trhill...
Mayan Families was a wonderful organization to volunteer for. I had emailed them in advance and their response and general concern was prompt and personal. They were very down to earth, yet professional and well organized. They were eager to work around our schedules and interests. The friendly staff made the work extremely enjoyable. They provided a large variety of activities for us, including seeing traditional dance and visiting schools, working with children, helping to feed poor elderly etc. It was truly both a pleasure and an honor to have met and worked with Mayan Families. I am eager to continue to stay involved through donations, and sponsorship and will be telling everyone I know about the wonderful work they are doing in Guatemala!
Mayan Families does what other people organizations talk about dream about. Their commitment to the work is massive. The founders live in this community too so they are also available to feel the pulse of what the people in the community are requesting and what needs to be done next. In the recent disaster Agatha this was also lifesaving. They were the first to be there to help families who had lost loved ones and housing and now needed food and shelter. This was along with maintaining their other programs. On a recent visit I saw first hand their passion and commitment to the people and animals that they serve. Yes … along with the massive service programs they have helping children, elderly, woman … they also help the animals many who are thrown on the streets as puppies and kittens. More donors are needed to step forward to help with the emergency care of these animals that often endure massive suffering and the neuter and spay program which helps prevent unnecessary suffering of future generations of animals.
We came to Guatemala knowing that the here have major need that we take for granted. We knew that there was a house that needed to be built and other home that needed general repair. Mayan Families had projects lined up for us when we arrived. They had a very organized plan that was almost immediately destroyed by horrible weather. ach day we woke up with a new plan in place to help those that were in despirate need of help. At the end of 5 days we started a new house foe a family that lived under tarps, we built cabinets for a Mayan Family pre-school; we painted walls of the pre-school with murals and bright colored walls and gave the child a bright and fun environment to learn in. We made it possible for a very ill person of 16 to be able to use his bathroom without assistance. All of these things happened as the result of a organization dedicated improving the lives of the people that live in their community. WAY TO GO MAYAN FAMILIES. You are a gift to Guatemala
The first day we spent in San Jorge to get a start on rebuilding a families home that was destroyed recently and they had nothing left. We were able to get a great start on this reconstruction project, however with the storm that hit that day and night, the conditions of the road unabled us to get there the next day to finish that project. The second day we spent at a families home in Pana. We built them a new roof with one panel to let the sunlight in. We also rebuilt their bathroom. The last two days were spent at a preschool in which we painted all the walls with educational pictures, built coat racks, and put together cubby shelves, enough cubbies for each kid to have one.
This was a fabulous experience. I came here to give to the people but went away with the feeling that they gave me more than I gave them! I helped to construct houses for people whose homes had been washed away by Tropical Storm Agatha, replace pieces of a home that was in the most impoverished state that I had ever witnessed and painted the walls of a pre-school to make in child-friendly and colorful. I hope I can return every year!
I worked with Mayan Families to build a home for a family whose home was about to colapse. I helped to put a new roof on a home and reinforce the supports on that home. I also helped to build a ramp to a bathroom for a termanilly ill young man so that he could get from his bed to the bathroom and we painted a pre-school to give some color to the education of disadvantaged young children.
Mayan families impressed me by giving our group many options through difficult circumstances beyond their control. While we didn't get to perform the tasks we had planned prior to our trip due to an extremely rainy week. They were able to shift gears as seamlessly as possible in a country such as Guatemala and find ways to put our large group (over 30) of volunteers to work in a vital area everyday.
This charity was an amazing experience helping the people of Guatemala. It was a true and organic experience helping people who truely needed aid and care. After the disasters of the lake area, it was overwheling to see the need. We felt so blessed to be able to help in any way that we could. It was also nice to be able to provide medical care in whatever way we could. We came into Guatemala with no plans, but with Mayan families help we were able to volunteer in many different and interesting ways. They organized and facilitated most of our trip which was extremely important.
Mayan Families is an exceptional organization that not only takes a wide scope of the needs of the Mayan people to heart, but also ensures that every donated dollar goes towards the people whom they serve. They are rooted in integrity and compassion. My volunteer experience with them was fantastic because I was given ample opportunity to serve on a breadth of projects, and my responsibilities could entail as much as I was willing to give. Great organization!
I loved working with Mayan Families, it's a wonderful grassroot oganisation, that does not have a big bureaucracy. I felt confident that the donations reached it's intended person or project. Most of the staff are indigenous, and were welcoming + helpful.
I've been studying abroad in Guatemala for six weeks in a social work program. I was placed with Mayan Families for my service placement, and can't imagine a better organization to fit my own preferences and the needs of the indigenous community. I've been welcomed into the home of Dwight and Sharon with open arms, and am so appreciative of what they have helped me to experience during my time here. Mayan Families is such a great organization because, although I was primarily interested in working with animal welfare, I was given the opportunity to work in various program areas to have a more well-rounded experience. Agatha left her mark on Guatemala shortly before I arrived, so there were always tasks to be completed. The staff and volunteers of Mayan Families approached the situations with such poise and confidence. Being surrounded by such a great group of proactive people of all ages has been such a refreshing experience. I'm already working out the kinks for a return trip!
I went to Guatemala to relax and meditate but found that i needed to contribute more with my time and energy whilst there. I was introduced to Mayan Families and felt very welcomed by them. It was a busy time after hurricane Agatha had left her mark on a very fragile country. I found MF to be very responsive to what was needed and they got on with doing it, I think their strengths are that they are proactive, spontaneous and flexible...afterall things happen in Guatemalan time. Their ability to let go of plans and do what was available to be done to me is a great way to be. I would recommend anyone to go and work with them to get an all round experience of an ngo, especially if you speak spanish and maybe if you are willing to learn the local languages too, this gives the opportunity to get really involved with supporting the local people and to gain an understanding of what its like to live in a place like guatemala. I look forward to going back sometime.
Myself, my wife and 11 year old son visited Mayan Families headquarters for 5 days during Christmas week 2009. We wanted an adventure that was both exciting and provided our son to see the beauty of Mayan cultures and to give back some of the good fortune we received by helping some people. We had soo much fun. One wouldn't normally describe handing out shoes to long lines of people in the rain a good time but I would!!! You wouldn't think working for hours to create baskets full of food staples so that some mayan families could have a special holiday dinner would be incredibly rewarding....but I would!!!! This was so cool. When we first went down we agreed to sponsor a family. Upon arriving we met another family we just had to help also. On our final days we met a tiny little woman with her son wrapped in a blanket on her back. She stole our hearts. Okay...one more family. No problem. As I type this I'm still wearing the friendship bracelet she gave me as a gift. Wow.
Mayan Families is unique organization in that the directors are on the ground hands on directing the many programs they are involved with.I have witnessed during my 4 month stay a level of service I did not know existed .Mayan families is about helping the most people in the most cost effective way .I
My family and I learned about Mayan Families in December 2006. We were immediately touched by the stories told by Sharon on her blog. Through her words and pictures she let us know of the needs of the indigenous people in the highlands of Guatemala and more importantly, she gave us the opportunity to help them through her organization. I joined the group Mayan Families Connection and together, we have helped and we have watched Mayan Families grow. When I visited the first time, in the summer of 2007, there were only a couple of hundred students being sponsored through Mayan Families. I speak Spanish and I helped collect and translate information for the sponsors. My husband and children gave schools donations we had brought. It was an incredible experience for all of us. Sharon and the local staff showed us the land where they were hoping to build a community center for the town of Tierra Linda. It was only a dream. When we returned to the USA we collected supplies and sent them to Mayan Families. I was lucky enough to help with their website and the sponsored student program. The next time we visited, in the summer of 2008, there were more than 800 sponsored students and they had started construction on two community centers, one in Tierra Linda and one in San Jorge! Right now there are more than 1400 sponsored students. Mayan Families and their supporters have build community centers in small towns, they have build classrooms, provided schools with materials, desks, chairs, books and food, have started preschool programs in Panajachel and in two towns that had never before had one. They have offered sewing and computer classes. They have provided micro loans to help women start or grow a business. They have provided thousands of vitamins to children. Mayan Families have helped people with medical needs, food, energy efficient stoves, water filters and support. They have provided employment to many locals. There are many other ways they have helped the communities where they work, there are too many to list. I have seen Mayan Families grow and I have seen the difference they have made in hundreds of people's lives, there in Guatemala and here in the USA by giving us the opportunity to help. My husband, children and I are planning to visit Mayan Families for the third time in July 2010. We cannot wait to go back and help as much as we can.
Mayan Families changed the face of our program making it a precedent setting sports program for Mayan children and particularly female children. Instead of high minded pronouncements, Mayan Families simply put girls on our playing fields and into our teams. Now almost half our athletes are girls. More than 40% of our coaches are now women. The social impact of these changes is significant in rural Guatemala where traditionally sports were for boys only and girls were supposed to stay home, wear their traditional ankle length skirts and care for smaller children. Girls did not participate in physical education in school. That is changing. All of a sudden their dads are buying them athletic shorts, T shirts and sneakers. Moms and dads have seen their daughters playing on our teams and winning - they are proud of their daughters and want to support their efforts in sports. And the girls have a new confidence. They know they can play well, that they can compete with boys and win. We even have mixed teams, up to 16 years old, the girls are highly valued by their teammates and the boys want them on the team because they are winners. Mayan Families pointed us in the right direction, supported us along the way and helped create a program that is lighting the torch for social change in the Guatemalan Mayan Highlands.
I work with another local non-profit group here in Guatemala and we have frequently looked to Mayan Families for inspiration and practical steps regarding how to benefit the indigenous Mayans. It is truly remarkable how effective they have been in serving this population. Mayan Families is extremely successful in identifying and meeting needs within Panajachel and our surrounding communities, and I continue to be surprised by the sheer number and variety of programs they offer. They do all of this while making personal relationships with the people they serve a priority. I consider Mayan Families to be one of the most effective and inspirational non-profits I have ever worked with.
I heard about Mayan Families (MF) via word of mouth: people raved about them. I have a personal interest in Guatemala for family reasons, but anyone interested in creating a more stable society in a country just south of the U.S. should be interested. I particularly wanted to support women and children, because I feel empowered, educated women and children can make a huge difference in creating stronger, healthier communities. Mayan Families appealed to me immediately because they have a hands-on, community-focused approach. They live in the community, they know the people they are working with, they are practical, and they ask what indigenous families need instead of prescribing solutions that won't work because there is no local buy-in. Through this approach, MF provides an impressive range of services, from supplying a type of stove (onil stoves) that require less fuel and aren't smokey, to providing access to education, healthcare for a life-threatening illness, clean water, sewing classes so women can gain new skills and bring in income, and starting a preschool (staffed by local women) so kids have a safe, enriching place to be while their parents work. Perhaps of greatest significance: they have gained the respect and trust of the local indigenous community and surrounding towns. I was fortunate enough to visit MF in December 2009 and see firsthand how they operate. I can't say enough about their commitment to the work, their hardworking (local) staff, and their ability to make every penny of a donation count. It's humbling to see that whether it's $10 or $100, my donation really can make a dramatic difference in the quality of life for another human being. With MF, I have the satisfaction of knowing that my modest contributions aren't being eaten up on lavish overhead or glitzy marketing (though I would like to see them get a grant to expand their offices!) In short: they are an inspiration.
This is my third trip down to Guatemala working with Mayan Families. I have seen firsthand the huge amount of work they accomplish, especially with Indigenous Women's issues. I am amazed at how much work they do and how much good they accomplish. Mayan Families touches so many lives. They are multi faceted in their approach working on Environmental issues like the fuel efficient stove project and Animal Welfare issues with the Hope for the Animals project as well as Micro Loans for Women.
I am a Board Member and Founder of Mayan Families. I personally moved down to Guatemala in August-2009 to be here full time and work with the Indigenous Mayan peoples of Guatemala. I am always amazed at what a small organization can get done. We are working with a young girl who has been on anti-biotics for the last 6 years and she is now going into Guatemala City to have an operation to correct the problem, thanks to donations that Sharon has been able to get thru her blog. There is a new Junior High School going up in the village of Tierra Linda thanks in part to Mayan Families. I have personally worked with many volunteers, medical clinics, dental clinics, delivering water filters to families, schools and the local Hospital in Solola, Guatemala. I have seen firsthand the benefits of Micro-Loans - Micro Finance on Indigenous Women and their families and the hope that kids have when we tell them that we found a sponsor for them to be able to go to school! I have smiled, laughed and been brought to tears here working with Mayan Families. It's amazing!
I spent two weeks in Panajachel, Guatemala. We arranged our housing and meals through Mayan Families, and were placed with a family. This proved to be an enriching experience, as well as excellent food! We spent time each day seeing various projects in the general area, such as building rooms and houses, stoves (with chimneys) that use less wood and cut down on respiratory problems. We visited a preschool that provided breakfast for the children and good programs. We attended several celebrations at other schools Tell your story here and help others understand this charity.
It was a wonderful trip! This group loves the Guatemalan people they care for. their work is hands on. There are so many programs that any one if they want to can find a way to help in a way that works for everyone. Here you learn that it really is true that to the world you may be just a person but to a person you maybe the world
