When my son was diagnosed with schizophrenia I attempted to get him some help without any real support so years of crucial time was lost. As I began to implode it was suggested that I look for a support group and I found Nami on the internet. Increased understanding, education, resources and the support of others dealing with the same struggles pulled me out the darkness and into the light of recovery and management of the impact of the disease on the whole family as well as the ill son. Over the years I chose to volunteer to help others thru training to become a support group facilitator and joined the board to help in a greater way. The mission and heart of Nami is its people! Extending their reach is crucial to overcoming the epidemic of mental disease as a result of multiple stresses in our society.
I have learned much from NAMI Central Virginia about Bipolar I and other mental health diagnosis. The personal connections and classes have been invaluable to assist me as I navigate with my loved one helping us both with everyday functional decisions.
Thank you, NAMI Central Virginia for the good work you provide in our community.
Hey have helped me grow and be able to stay in recovery since being diagnosed with Bioplar 2 Diorder. I've been able to share my story and help facilitate a support group through them! They truly are like a 2nd family to me! Love them!!!
NAMI Central Virginia has helped my family in numerous ways. NAMI Central Virginia was a place for my wife and I to turn in our darkest hour. When our son was diagnosed with mental illness and died by suicide, we were hurting, traumatized, lost, and feeling the affects of stigma. NAMI Central Virginia provided the support, programs, and connections we needed to start down the road of mending and NAMI Central Virginia has been with us every day on our journey. NAMI has provided us with the help we needed to heal and help our other two children deal with the loss of their brother. I can't thank NAMI Central Virginia enough for who they are and what they do!
When they placed my foster daughter in my home i had no idea how to deal with her mental health. she had numerous diagnosis. For months she had threatened or attempted suicide. I thought our only option was to have her put in a facility that could monitor her 24/7. i soon registered for a suicide first aid course given by NAMI. I began to attend any events that they provided or shared about other events about mental illnesses. to say the least I learned more than i ever thought possible. I am now able to care for my daughter and have tools and resources to assist me. I also use the information and resources that was provided to me through NAMI in my daily work as a human services worker. Thanks NAMI for all the support and education that you have provided me to become a better mother and human service worker.
NAMI Central Virginia is an amazing nonprofit with volunteers, board members, and staff who truly care about the cause and their community. Their programs helped me to feel less alone and hopeless in dealing with my depression and anxiety. I spent so much time thinking my mental health condition was a weakness- when the truth is it has made me stronger. "Where there is no struggle, there is no strength." Thank you, NAMI-CVA for helping me to realize my true potential.
I have been volunteering with NAMI CVA ever since I learned about them. I can see first hand the dedication and passion that the employees and other volunteers have for helping people with mental illness. If you're looking for information, resources, or just need to figure out the first step, definitely give NAMI a call. They have excellent support groups, all free for people living with mental illness or their family members. I am very proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization.
NAMI Central Virginia sets up a NAMI Walks event every year. The walks reach around 3 thousand people.
NAMI CVA brings together these people and makes them realize they're not alone with their struggles in either dealing with mental illness or caring for a loved one afflicted by mental illness. It is a true inspiration seeing all these people come together for a wonderful cause.
Kathy and Jeff have helped Central Virginians with mental illness an extraordinary amount. The classes and workshops I have attended have always been fantastic leaving me feeling better about myself and the world around me.
I cannot wait to see NAMI CVA grow and get more recognition by the community they serve.
The NAMI CVA classes greatly helped a family friend who did not know where to turn when his loved one began exhibiting mental illness.
Their classes are open and welcoming to whoever needs it. They provide a much needed place family members of loved ones with mental illness can turn to in order to understand how to care for their loved ones.
NAMI CVA is an extraordinary nonprofit with an efficient and caring staff. I was directed here because of a family member who volunteered in the past.
The more I've talked about my volunteer work at NAMI CVA to my friends, the more I discover how many people have utilized their free resources. Many of the people who utilize the classes and workshops provided for free by NAMI CVA have no other resource in terms of mental health.
NAMI/CVA is an outstanding award willing organization that was given the Outstanding Affiliate Award for 2017 by NAMI/VA.
The organization touches many lives as evidenced by the people I have met through the solid programs it provides.
The organization has been a major influence on me and my recovery. I wouldn't be in recovery without their support, educational meetings , educational programs, special opportunities and support groups.
The organization has a tireless Executive Director Kathy Harkey and Program Director Jeff Conley who put in long hours and go above and beyond the call of duty. They take their work seriously and are always there for the public as well as its members.
I am glad I was referred to this organization by three different people that I know and trust that were fellow peers. The organization has exceeded my initial expectations tenfold.
I didn't understand what was happening to my child as he began developing a mental illness. I did not have the skills to give him the help he needed. I felt lost. I felt stigma and didn't know who to call for answers. No one would talk to me because I was not the person with the illness. They would only talk with my son but he was too sick to reach out for help and medical care. Feelings of helplessness were with me everyday. Then, I found NAMI-CVA. I learned that I was not alone. I registered in a NAMI-CVA free education class and a NAMI-CVA support group. I learned about the illness my son had developed and about things I could do to help him, myself, and my family. NAMI-CVA provided me with the tools, resources, connections, knowledge, support, and hope I needed. My family and I are still involved with NAMI-CVA because it is an outstanding organization that helps people who have mental illness and the families who love them.
