Results: My Favorite Charity Events’ mission is to seek out resources to support a successful educational experience for all students. We are collaborating with a local elementary school to improve the lives of children who might otherwise go unnoticed. We are focused on two projects supporting elementary school students: those who are struggling in Mathematics and a Christmas for Kids program. We have been working with Cooke Elementary School for 3 years and are working to increase our support to Cooke and also to expand out to other elementary schools in Virginia Beach. Our tutoring program offers one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school year to students identified by the school teachers and administration as needing help with a specific academic subject where a student is struggling. Our goal is to offer a free tutoring program for elementary school students who are struggling academically, initially at Cooke Elementary School but expanding out to other Virginia Beach Schools and being recognized by the Virginia Beach City Public Schools as a partner preparing every child to be future ready with the goal of eliminating achievement and opportunity gaps so that all students maximize their full potential. Further, our goal is to provide continuity in learning processes and provide a free tutoring program that extends into the school year affording children the extra academic support needed to catch up and successfully compete with their peers. We see an exciting and perfect opportunity to level the educational playing field and help our underserved children. We work to identify specific areas of tutoring support required for each student based on current subject weaknesses and SOL scores. Our goal is to improve the student’s fundamentals in mathematics and reading so that they are achieving academic success and to improve the SOL scores of the students showing academic retention and improved learning through evidence-based tutoring. Our Christmas for Kids program is for disadvantaged families located in our community and that have small children. For the past three years, Cooke Elementary has provided our organization with a list of children (and siblings) who, in turn, received both toys and clothing from donations provided to us for Christmas from surrounding neighbors and businesses. Thanks to their generosity, we have been able to successfully provide 111 kids (40 families) in our community with Christmas gifts. The number of children may seem small but the task of bringing the program to realization is no small feat, and this particular program has brought tons of joy to those children who would not have experienced Christmas during those years. Our goal is to expand the program at Cooke and extend the Christmas for Kids program to other elementary schools in the community.
