I have had a mixed experience with Muttville. Some days volunteering have been the best days I've ever had, and some have left me wondering why I have volunteered here. The employees can be nice, but you often have to be the one to initiate conversation, other volunteers can be kind/amazing and some are just flat out rude and mean, and I can't think of a time where Sherri had been present and thanked anybody for volunteering.
I think we all go in starry eyed, but if you really take the time to feel the energy and hear what's going on, it can be disappointing on many levels.
You should have your own experience. Maybe people will be kind to you, maybe they won't. Sorry if you invest your time and have an underwhelming experience.
I started volunteering about 6 years ago after seeing Muttville at an outreach event in San Francisco. I fell in love with the sweet older dogs we met, and the friendly staff. I've volunteered at headquarters, at various outreach events and at the Mutt Manor, as well as fostering and adopting 3 dogs. Muttville has an amazing mission, wonderful staff and a tremendous community of volunteers fosters and doners. They've saved countless lives, enriched the community, tought us all to really appreciate older dogs, A+ organization through and through.
Back in 2020 I saw a Super Bowl ad for the "under dogs", where a car company was featuring disabled & old dogs and highlighting what great pets they make, never deterred by their challenges. That led to me going from "never considered a dog before" to "I must adopt an under dog right away!"
After posting a question on my work's internal doggie forum the overwhelming response was to reach out to Muttville. I did, and the people there have truly been the most engaged, caring, and friendly group I've ever worked with. They LOVE their senior mutts and they go to such lengths to make sure the mutts are well taken care of both before and after their adoption.
In my case I needed a dog that could handle stairs, kids, and living with cats, and the adoption manager actually did a trial run with a foster family with cats to make sure Paulie Walnuts - the doggie she had in mind - would work! After a successful trial we met with the foster mom at the beach on a walk with Paulie. It took about 5 minutes of us walking together for Paulie to seemingly say "OK you're my family now" and happily came home with us that very day.
Paulie Walnuts have been with us for almost 2 years now and he's brought so much joy. He's always happy, he's always easy going, he just wants to be around his people, nap (on the couch, on the sidewalk, on people's lawns, in the park...), try to steal the cat's food, and get belly rubs from anyone within arm's reach. He loves dogs of all sizes, and despite some physical ailments his spirit and attitude is always super positive. He's been my constant companion, whether it's working together on the couch, commuting to the office, lazy afternoon walks, or just lounging in the backyard, and his love is constant and infectious.
Since he joined our family the people at Muttville check in frequently to see how he's doing, they've helped with some vet support when he his allergies flared up, and one of their staff has been his dog sitter whenever we go on vacation. He LOVES visiting her, and their support has been invaluable. I love that Muttville's involvement doesn't end at adoption, their mutts are Muttville mutts for life, and as a first time adoptee their ongoing support has made all the difference.
The staff and volunteers with Muttville are a dedicated team who work so hard and diligently to care for precious senior dogs who would otherwise be in a kill shelter or never adopted. They are informative and work hard to make sure the dogs and potential new owners are the best fit for each other. I volunteer here and see the dedication and passion every week.
We adopted our first dog at Muttville in 2009 after reading about them in the local newspaper, and we kept coming back! We've adopted four dogs through Muttville in the last 13 years, and every time we come back, we are amazed yet again at how much they've grown and how many dogs and families they've connected. I'm an operations professional by training, so I'm always particularly impressed by how well-run the entire organization is. Every step of the process -- from intake, to medical evaluations, to foster handoffs, to volunteer shifts and adoption events, to the adoption process itself -- is just so well-coordinated. Hats off to this incredible team!
Muttville is all about love. Their mission is to rescue senior dogs and match them with loving families. Seniors are so hard to adopt because people have misconceptions about them. I personally have had multiple Muttville dogs in my life and they have been life changing.
I had lost my previous dog, a senior pug mix, while I was hospitalized. I passed my time looking for another senior furry friend. I happened upon a photo on Muttville's Instagram of a little dog and was immediately smitten. I found out they named him Fuzz Aldrin. I waited to see him posted as available for adoption and when I didn't see him, I reached out to him. I was told he was not going to be available for adoption but was going to be considered hospice. My heart lept, I wanted to give him the best time in whatever time was left.
Muttville paid for his veterinary care, was dilligent in being there for me, and even came down to Monterey to see how he was doing (see the video at the top of this page). I was blessed to have 23 wonderful months with Fuzz.
I had been involved in running rescues for 17 years and I was soooo impressed with Muttville! They take such awesome care of their dogs and make amazing love matches for so many dogs and people. I cannot say enough good things about this awesome organization!!
After having many senior dogs within the family growing up, being drawn to Muttville once I moved to San Francisco was practically a given. To start, I was struck by how compelling their storytelling was -- flipping the script on senior rescue dogs and demonstrating why they're actually some of the best companions around rather than hard-knock cases. Before long, I went from an avid follower of their social media content from afar to a repeat foster parent for various shelter foster dogs as they waited to find their forever homes. It was at this point, comin from the outside in, that I discovered such a large and eager community of staffers and volunteers that get dozens of senior dogs adopted every single week. There is a perfect mix of institutional professionalism and grassroots scrappiness in the community that ultimately allows them to make a massive impact. I am thrilled to have found such rewarding work that allows me to contribute back and bring more joy into my community, and would highly recommend it to anyone else looking to do the same.
i have been a volunteer and mutt foster with Muttville for 10 years. i have had the honor of fostering about 50 dogs over that period, as well as meeting the most amazing people who work and volunteer with Muttville. It has been impressive to watch this organization grow from something small out of the home of the founder Sherri Franklin, to a rescue that has touched the lives of so many dogs and people, as well as inspiring the establishment of other senior dog rescues around the US. It is truly an honor to volunteer along side such a dedicated group of people
I have been fostering for Muttville for 3 years and have fostered almost 50 dogs for this amazing organization. I have also personally adopted 3 dogs from Muttville. I cannot say enough good things about this incredible rescue. What Sherri Franklin has done for senior dogs in San Francisco is truly inspiring. Muttville’s headquarters is one of the only cage free facilities in the country and one of my favorite places to visit. All of the staff and volunteers are wonderful and have really made me feel like part of their community. I always feel appreciated when I foster and volunteer for Muttville and I feel like the work I am doing with them is truly important. Senior dogs have completely changed my life. Anyone who is considering adopting a dog has to consider adopting a senior dog. I encourage everyone to please donate to Muttville to help save so many more amazing senior dogs like mine and all the sweet special souls I have had the privilege of fostering (and many more to come)!
Muttville is a place where love, kindness, and patience come together. The mission of Muttville is to give senior pups a chance at a loving home for the rest of their days. All the dogs rescued by Muttville are placed into a loving foster home and you can see the amazement and gratitude in the eyes of each of these pups as they realize what love and warmth are. It’s also incredibly rewarding as a foster parent to watch the dogs blossom and come out of their shell. Some of these dogs unfortunately only knew a tough life before being rescued but through the amazing care received by the vet team, volunteers and their foster families, they warm up and become trusting and very loving - the next thing you know, they’re begging for belly rubs and giving you endless kisses. I had the pleasure of fostering Maverick, a toy chihuahua, before he was placed into a loving forever home last weekend. His companionship helped me grieve the loss of my longtime dog of over a decade and he brought lightness and laughter into my world once again. In many ways, we saved each other all through the connection of Muttville. I can’t wait to help another dog in need.
Could not recommend Muttville more! The staff and volunteers create a great environment and care so deeply about the dogs. I fostered my first dog with them this summer. They patiently answered all of my questions, gave me a ton of resources, and showed so much love to all the dogs while I was there. My foster dog was in rough shape when she was brought in and Muttville did a phenomenal health reset for her. Muttville gave her high-quality meds, foods, and all the supplies she needed. They are so well-run and very organized which helps these animals heal and find their forever home quickly. I realized how special this place in when one of the workers told me he cried tears of joy when he was offered his position.
We have known Muttville since the very beginning. Lives are changed every day, for both the dogs and the families. Our daughter volunteered with Muttville a few years ago and learned so much from the wonderful staff and other volunteers. We are proud to say we will continue to be lifelong supporters of Muttville!
LOVE Muttville. I have volunteered for many dog rescues in the past, and have felt that Muttville has given me the best experience. They support you during the volunteering process and thank you through the entire process!!!
After leaving Muttville (because we moved) and volunteering for another dog rescue, I came crawling back (after we moved back!)!!! LOVE YOU MUTTVILLE!!! SUPER stoked to keep volunteering for you guys!!!
I've volunteered for quite a few non-profits and Muttville has been far and away the best to work with. Their founder/CEO, Sherri Franklin, is an excellent delegator, good at networking and finding the right person for the job. Right away, I could see that the staff and volunteers had a huge amount of respect both for the animals they are helping and for each other. And people have fun working there - that really stood out to me! Everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area has heard of Muttville and there are lots of warm and fuzzy feelings when you say, "This dog came from Muttville." I'm happy to be part of the pack!
Gracias a la fundación por la donación del alimento para mis mascotas están en buenas condiciones agradecido eternamente con ellos
I have volunteered with, and donated to, Muttville for several years now, having adopted 10 of their senior rescues: Tucker, Cassie, Niner, WeeOne, Finnegan, Hana, Harley, Lolli, Pinto and Mozart, I can truly say that Sherri Franklin the founder has created a unique senior dog rescue, unlike any other in the country, that is leading the way in finding new, loving homes, for senior pets!
I have both fostered and adopted a hospice dog from Muttville. This organization cares deeply about the older, vulnerable dogs. I hope that other rescues across the nation will copy the format that Muttville uses which is a cage free, open and welcoming facility.
When dogs arrive to Muttville, you can see how quickly their mannerism changes going from scared and alone to social, playful and happy like they just arrived home.
Sherri, the founder of Muttville is one of the most inspiring women I have met in my life. She is shaping the way the world treats older dogs. The revolutionary hospice program at Muttville allows folks to adopt a dog that will need palliative care. Muttville will cover that cost for the remainder of their life.
My daughter and I started volunteering about 4 years ago. She was 13 and having a hard time in middle school. We started volunteering on the weekends and have been at Muttville almost every Saturday for almost 4 years. We have met hundreds of amazing senior dogs and helped so many of them find homes. But Muttville is not just about saving dogs it is about the people who work, volunteer and adopt there. We have met and worked with amazing people who are passionate, loving and committed to improving lives. I’ve been able to watch my daughter go from being a very reserved and soft spoken girl to being an outspoken, self assured, and confident young woman. We live Muttville and it has changed our lives. We are even the proud parents of s 12 year old Muttville alum. Thank you Muttville.
Together with my daughters, we have volunteered with Muttville for nearly four years. This has been pure joy for all three of us. The dogs are so loving, the volunteers are incredible, and we know what we are doing is really important (plus, cuddles...lots of cuddles). We adopted our first Muttville dog in 2014 after seeing his profile on-line. He really tugged on our heart strings! A couple years later we started fostering dogs, initially on weekends, and then full time. Fast forward and today we have 3 Muttville dogs!. Muttville has far exceeded my expectations in so many ways. We are honored to be part of such a wonderful organization that has truly changed the lives of senior dogs. My children understand the value and reward that comes from volunteering. It's a win/win - wonderful for the dogs, and wonderful for the people that love them.

I have been lucky to be a Muttville volunteer for a year and I've never seen a more dedicated group of staff and volunteers. From three-legged dogs to dogs that act like puppies, to blind dogs to dogs without jaws- Muttville's got them all and welcomes each senior pup with open arms. My own pup is a proud Muttville alum and I was supported by the staff at every step, from deciding to foster to deciding to adopt her. I couldn't recommend Muttville strongly enough!
Muttville is based on the belief that every dog deserves the chance to be loved. Sometimes a senior dog's guardian passes away or can no longer care for them. After going stray, senior dogs can need time and medical care that isn't available at most shelters. Muttville and their fosters take in these dogs, giving them the opportunity to recover and find a new family. Instead of dying alone and scared, dogs with terminal conditions enter Muttville's hospice program to live their best life. Most Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 Muttville opens their doors for adoption events. It's beautiful and peaceful. These dogs and the people at Muttville have so much love to share.
I have been a volunteer at Muttville for 3 years now. It is such a special place, not only helping senior dogs find their forever home, but enriching the lives of so many people who find their forever companion. And they have special programs to help their senior clients on fixed income be able to adopt a special companion to enrich their lives too.
I have been a volunteer, adopter and financial supporter of Muttville for almost as long as there has been a Muttville to support.
Tucker, Cassie, Niner, Wee One, Finnegan, Hana, Lolli, Harley, Pinto and Mozart were all Muttville alumni and we have loved everyone of them with all our hearts!
Muttville is such a special place, you cannot visit HQ without it bringing a smile to your face, as you walk in all these sweet old dogs, some small, some large, all emerge from every corner and descend upon you, looking
for love and attention, its simply not possible to be sad when you see them all, and realize that without Sherri
and her amazing staff (you know who you are) and an army of devoted volunteers that all these old dogs would
not have a 2nd chance to spend their remaining years in a loving home, and bringing joy and unconditional love to those that adopt them.
I *LOVE* Muttville

I met Sherri Franklin in 2016 when she came to Oakland Animal Services to pick up some senior pups (as she does) where I have been a volunteer groomer since 2014. Sherri's dedication and devotion to her mission inspired me to help her organization, too, so now I volunteer at both! Muttville is an extraordinary place, full of amazing compassion for animals and each other as animal lovers. I got certified as an animal groomer JUST for this. It's not even my paying job. But what I get from it is priceless. I get so much joy from what I do and this very special organization I do it for... it's hard to describe the satisfaction it brings. I can't wait to retire so I can do MORE of this for Muttville!!
The staff and volunteers at Muttville work tirelessly to ensure these elder babies get the love and all-around attention they so need and deserve. Their passion is in providing new hope and a peaceful, safe space - both temporary and permanent - for senior dogs - the ones most likely to be overlooked/ignored/deemed un-adoptable by most shelters. How fabulous is THAT?
I had lost my mom who was the only family I had. I used to spend my summer vacations with her, but I couldn’t longer do that. So I started to foster dogs. My depression went away. I started going to the beach and the park with the dog which I wouldn’t have done alone. It made me very happy. I found my peace and happy place by fostering dogs. Muttville changed my life for the better. I’m very thankful. I couldn’t live without a dog.
My girlfriend and I began by attending a couple adoption outreach events. We met several amazing volunteers and doggies that convinced us to check out Muttville's Headquarters. We were so blown away by the dedication and commitment to doggies that may otherwise fall through the cracks. Since that time we've volunteered weekly for the last 2 years, fostered 8 dogs and adopted 3! Muttville is so amazing, saving so many dogs that might be euthanized, even though they're so happy and full of life. There are no cages, every dog is allowed the freedom to mingle. The dogs receive amazing care in the vet suite and get endless love from the staff and volunteers. Our life and the life of countless dogs is infinitely better because of Muttville!!
I started as a volunteer with Muttville 5 years ago. Being part of the work Muttville was doing finding loving, forever homes for senior dogs, some with very special needs, made me want to do more. I joined the board two years ago and continue to volunteer. Being able to share in the stories coming out of Muttville adoptions, the amazing lives these dogs find through Muttville, and all the goodness that is added to the lives of their new human guardians, brings a huge amount of joy to me. Thank you, Muttville.

Muttville really is a magical, happy place. I think many folks hear senior dog rescue and think, "How sad!"
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
I've been volunteering at Muttville for four years now, and in that time, I've spent over 3,000 hours there, and over 3,000 dogs have found their forever homes. Most of these dogs would have faced certain euthanasia in the shelters that they came from.
Seeing these dogs blossom when given love, proper veterinary care and nutrition-it's just amazing.
When I first started as a volunteer, I largely did dog care and laundry. As I've grown in my role, I now lead outreach events into the community to educate about Muttville and its mission for senior dogs, and also have taken on the training of all new Muttville volunteers. I also heavily feature the Muttville mutts on my Facebook and Instagram accounts which has resulted in several adoptions. My Instagram account is found here: www.instagram.com/craighermes
It's rewarding work, and it has had a profound impact on my own health and well being. Do we heal the dogs or do they heal us? It's both. It's a perfect win-win.
One would be hard pressed to find a more diverse, compassionate, and loving community than Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.
Thank you.

I’ve been with Muttville for over 5 years now and have made wonderful friends! I’ve fostered over 20 dogs to great homes, and figured out how to cater to each one’s special-needs. Plus it has had me work on a challenging issue of mine, setting long-term goals & sticking to them. Plus not to isolate myself if I’m feeling sad about something, I like coming up w/projects no one has thought of. Plus, when I’m not fostering, I’ve learned to use my Behind-The-Scences talents at Adoption Events-this way 3 people don’t have to hug/pet my crying Foster if I need to run to the bathroom!! Hey

Muttville is amazing! I've been a volunteer, foster, adopter and donor for 10 years now. The work that Muttville does is incredible. The organization has grown over the years and is efficiently run by a talented and passionate staff who are supported by an army of dedicated volunteers. It's an honor and privilege to contribute to the joy that Muttville brings not only to the dogs, but also us humans who are blessed to have them in our lives.

To say that Sheri and the gang at Muttville have transformed my life would be an understatement. Each morning is new for me with my canine soul mate. I have adopted a number of dogs over the last three decades, and I must say that this experience was absolutely seamless. What stood out to me most is the heart and soul of each person who volunteers and/or works at the organization. I felt it the moment I walked into the open space. It's truly like nothing I've ever seen or felt before -- and the woman responsible for this, Sheri Franklin, is certainly going to heaven. The angels will also be singing to her and I'm certain that a few dogs will be barking in the background to show their own thanks and gratitude. Thank you, Muttville! Susan in San Francisco

I have been volunteering at Muttville for about three years doing various administrative/development tasks, and it has been such a rewarding experience. The staff is wonderful and the atmosphere is so positive. I love volunteering at Muttville and would encourage anyone interested in volunteering to reach out and do so!

I have volunteered with Muttville for eight years and feel so lucky to be a part of this organization. There is no other organization that makes me and every dog feel so loved and appreciated. We take on some of the worst cases of sad, shut down and broken senior dogs and turn them around into someone's forever loving companion. Muttville really is a magical place that feeds the heart and soul of not just senior dogs but volunteers like me. Muttville is a top notch, entrepreneurial, talented and dedicated organization that has been recognized for bringing awareness to the joy and benefits of senior dog companionship. And, I get to be a part of it? How could I ask for anything more?
Review from Guidestar
I've been volunteering at Muttville since 2016, about a year after my husband and I moved to San Francisco. I started walking a few dogs and cleaning HQ, then expanded to participating in adoption events and outreach, as well as fostering dogs. Muttville is great because it's a small organization with HUGE results. As a volunteer, I've been welcomed not just to my shift but thanked for everything I contribute, from making T-shirts for a local running race to turning our holiday party into a fundraiser. Muttville is a wonderful place, and made me feel like San Francisco is my home.
Since all Muttville dogs are friendly with other dogs and with people, we've been able to foster routinely, which has helped our reactive terrier to calm down. Our two dogs--who are also seniors--know right away when a Muttville Mutt comes to stay!

My daughter and I have been volunteering at Muttville together since 2015 and it has been a real joy to see how she has grown in her capacity under the guidance of the staff. I’ve gone from a non- dog person to one who enjoys being around the dogs, but I really come back because of the people, the staff, the volunteers, and the adopters. The staff and volunteers feel like family and I enjoy facilitating the dogs finding their forever homes. One thing I really like about Muttville is that there is something everyone can contribute whether you are more comfortable interacting with dogs or people, or just doing lots and lots of laundry!

I've been volunteering at Muttville with my daughter since 2016. On many weeks, the hours I spend at Muttville are the highlights of my week. I get to help share the stories of the dogs with potential adopters, spend quality time with my daughter, and work alongside a great staff.

Visiting and volunteering with Muttville is one of my true joys. The work that the folks at Muttville do is beyond inspiring. Not only do they give the finest care and boundless love to wonderful senior dogs, but the organization itself is incredibly well run. I am in awe of HOW they do the work they do. As far as I can see, every aspect of running a rescue organization is right on point -- from the people to the structure to the communication to the volunteers to the space to the interaction to the community to the mutts. From head to paw ... Muttville "gets it." I consider myself lucky to have found them. I just wish I lived closer and could volunteer more frequently.

As a volunteer at Muttville I see the rescued seniors thrive and find their new forever families. It is an amazing happy heartfelt environment. You know that Muttville will give the senior mutts they rescue the best possible care and rehabilitation to get them ready for adoption. In the meantime they are either with loving foster families to help them get ready for adoption or at our cage free facility in San Francisco where there is only love and pets from the wonderful volunteers and staff. Love, love Muttville and my heart is filled with joy when I'm volunteering.

Several years ago I became a volunteer for Muttville, then an adopter, a donor and now a board member. I love the organization (as well as all the mutts)! The organization's DNA combines deep, serious professionalism with heart and soul. Everyone at Muttville is devoted to the best for the senior dogs and the people who interact with them, and it shows.

I am the founder of Muttville, it's my life's passion and work. It is the reason I get up in the morning. We save so many lives and not just the animals but humans' lives, too! We are a stealth team and love innovating new ideas to help senior dogs get the great lives they deserve so much! We believe in 2nd chances and work hard to make that happen every single day!
Muttville is a very special place where love happens and people leave happy, we are a cage free environment where dogs socialize with humans all day! www.muttville.org

I've volunteered for over 4 years, doing outreach events and adoption counseling, and can't say enough wonderful things about Muttville. The staff are amazing - dedicated to the mission, devoted to the mutts and grateful and supportive of volunteers, donors and adopters. I always feel that my volunteer service is meaningful and appreciated every time I come in. It is so rewarding to connect these wonderful senior dogs with loving forever homes. Such a happy loving place! I've attached a photo with me and my favorite Mutt Monty!

Muttville is a dog and a dog lovers dream come true! Day in and day out, this place is packed with staff and volunteers who do everything they can to allow these mutts to feel comfortable and safe. We sometimes get dogs who look so broken and abandoned and a few days later, these same dogs are happily playing with the other mutts or their human friends. The transformations are so beautiful. I love muttville!!

Muttville is an amazing place with a huge heart for senior dogs. I've adopted 4 dogs from Muttville over the years - 2 German Shepherd mixes, a pitbull mix, and a dachshund, and ALL have been the biggest sweethearts. In the last year, I started volunteering for them and can verify that staff and volunteers are sincerely warm and welcoming, with huge hearts. They are also very professional and candid with adopters, which has allowed them to grow and save more and more senior dogs each year. We have so many repeat adopters (like me) which really speaks to the relationship Muttville has with the community.

Muttville's big heart for older dogs attracted me to Muttville 8 years ago, both as volunteer foster home & first time donor. 8 years later & over 5,000 dogs saved by Muttville, I continue to be involved because Muttville has something extra that differentiates it from ordinary dog rescues- Muttville is professionally run. It shows in Muttville's high degree of organization, efficiency, and ability to innovate while navigating the hurdles of a rapidly growing rescue group. Last year, I was honored to join the Board of Directors as Treasurer and to be a part of helping Muttville to continue to refine its operations in order to save more seniors in a way that gives the best experience to the mutts, staff, volunteers, donors, and general public.
Review from Guidestar
The best dog rescue in the SF Bay Area, if not the country. Senior dogs are often over looked but Muttville has created a market for senior dogs. The dogs come from shelters all over the country and are transformed once they cross the Muttville threshold. Medically, the dogs are given whatever treatment they need no matter the expense. The Muttville staff is always on hand to help with an adoption or with any problems/concerns that may arise after the adoption is complete. Adopters are asked to sign a waiver stating they will accept the dog back if the adoption does not work out. I also love the fact that they have a fospice program for terminally ill dogs who are placed in loving foster homes until it's time to say goodbye. We have adopted 8 senior dogs from Muttville over the years and highly recommend this rescue. A five star rating is not enough - I would give more if I could.

I have worked in animal rescue for many years and I have never been involved with an organization as amazing as Muttville. Sherri and team have literally created a market for senior and special needs dogs who otherwise would be euthanized. They are deeply committed to the dogs in their care and go above and beyond to place a dog in it's forever home. Anything I need as a volunteer, I only have to ask, they are always available. The fact that they have created a fospice program along with an amazing seniors-for-seniors program shows how progressive they are in their attitude towards dog rescue.
I love Muttville. I’ve gotten pallets of food donated to them, raised money and given my time to these senior sweethearts for nine years now. For the past two years, I’ve gone every week to spend time mopping, taking dogs for walks and generally just giving/getting love from these sugar faces because my own dog passed away but I needed to spend time with dogs. If you want to know why senior dogs rule, understand what it means to give fearlessly or how important the positive influence of dogs are, support Muttville, visit Muttville.

Muttville is an incredible success story. Who could have guessed that the most unwanted dogs (seniors) would become the most incredible sources of love, joy, and companionship for their new families? Who knew senior dogs were really just nuggets of incredible treasure?
Muttville knew! They transformed the lives of 1000's of dogs not just in California, but across the country and world as the world learns to see senior dogs through a new pair of glasses.
This is the happiest 'shelter' you will ever visit. No sadness, only joy, and optimism, and unity, and a deep sense of purpose. The greatest non-profit I could have ever hoped to be a part of.

If there is a heaven, Muttville is definitely it! The staff’s love for these special dogs radiates throughout the whole building. As a volunteer I have the privilege of getting to know the mutts and see them off to their new amazing homes. These angels deserve a second chance and Muttville recognizes that all lives have meaning. There should be a Muttville in every city across the country!

As a volunteer and foster, I have volunteered with Muttville for almost four years. This is an amazing organization that gives senior dogs the second chance that they deserve.
The organization itself is run by staff that truely believes in the organization’s purpose and honestly want the best for each dog.
As a foster for almost 20 dogs I have had the opportunity to experience how dogs are taken care of, looked after and eventually adopted out to their forever homes. With each adoption the dog is the number one consideration to ensure that they enter into a home that will give them the care that they need and deserve.
As a weekly volunteer I am able to see day to day operations with the staff to see how they interact with the dogs which means the dogs are in their laps, on their desks and getting all the pets and love.
Muttville is a unique Reacue in that it does not put the dogs in to kennels and they have free range in a few different rooms. This give the dogs an opportunity to socialize and just relax on large beds and fluffy blankets.

Muttville is such an amazing organization! We have fostered two dogs, adopted two dogs and donated to Muttville and I've had five star experiences in all of these areas. Fostering is so rewarding and they are with you every step of the way -answering any questions you have and taking care of all their health needs. My first experience was through adoption, walking in to Muttville the first time and seeing all the senior dogs running free is so special and rare! They have rescued over 5,000 seniors to date and take such great care of each and every one. The staff and volunteers are pawsome - all so knowledgeable and dedicated.
We couldn't imagine our household without Gigi or Sydney. Gigi was rescued from LA where she had mats upon mats with major eye infections and dental issues. Muttville took amazing care of her and removed her eye and took care of all of her dental needs. She is our little one-eyed, 5-toothed wonder and such a loving girl. Sydney was rescued from Fresno with dental issues and a mass in her stomach. Thankfully, Muttville was able to take care of her dental issues and make sure her tumor was ok. We love them both so much. SERIOUSLY this place is beyond amazing saving so many senior dogs who oftentimes are overlooked in shelters.

Muttville is an amazing rescue that saves the lives of senior dogs! I’ve been volunteering there for 5 years & we just adopted our 2nd dog from there:)

I've been a volunteer at Muttville for over 3 years....I work across the street and started volunteering for something to do on my lunch hour, as well as to get my dog fix! I can't begin to describe what a wonderful organization this is, how many thousands of senior dogs have been saved who otherwise would be neglected or overlooked at the shelters or by owners who can't or won't care of them. these dogs are pampered and cared for like you wouldn't believe! it's such a privilege to be involved with all the wonderful staff and volunteers I see almost everyday!
Just look at this nugget, who was found as a stray in Stockton and brought to Muttville today!

I've been volunteering with Muttville for the past 2 years and it's truly one of the most fulfilling and fun things I've ever chosen to do! Finding time to do volunteer work can be a challenge with a full time job, but since I work across the street I decided that I would squeeze in time on my lunch hours. There's no better break in my day then when I can leave my desk and go spend time with the pooches (and even the unglamorous tasks like picking up poop, mopping up pee or doing laundry!). Over 4000 senior pups who might have been overlooked or even euthanized in other shelters have been rescued and saved thanks to Muttville. If a dog ends up at Muttville they have truly hit the jackpot as there are so many wonderful and dedicated volunteers and staff who make sure they get the ultimate in treatment and TLC - this makes Muttville a wonderful place to be!

During the last 6+ years, I have been a multiple-time adopter, volunteer, foster, and donor to Muttville, and I can't say enough about how truly great and wonderful this organization, and the people who run and support it, are. Some of the things that I particularly appreciate about Muttville include the mission of rescuing senior dogs (and leveraging the Bay Area market to find forever homes for so many), how positive the environment is (cage-free facilities, great people), how passionate the staff and volunteers are in giving their all in the service of these pups, and seeing how well and successfully this organization has scaled and grown over time to benefit so many dogs (setting up a HQ, developing such a deep foster network, etc.). I look forward to continuing to be a part of Muttville and its success for many more years to come.

Muttville Rocks!!
I have been fostering with Muttville for five years and have had the pleasure of fostering over 20 dogs. I started with Mr. Pickles and Nikolo has been my latest dog. Muttville makes fostering so easy! They are very responsive to questions and if a dog needs something, they are on it. They provide anything you need to make the dogs feel safe and cared for. The care of the senior dogs is the most important thing and they obviously love these old dogs. The office is run so efficiently, it's like no other organization I have dealt with. Sherri has assembled a fantastic team and I look forward to fostering for many years to come.

I have volunteered with Muttville for the past year, and I don't have enough positive things to say about this organization. People all too often get the misconception that it's a 'sad' place because its full of senior dogs, but that couldn't be further from the truth. As a cage-free shelter, it is an absolute joy for both the dogs and the volunteers! The dogs get total freedom to roam about their comfortable space, and during your volunteer shift, you often just get to spend time petting and hanging out with the mutts if you aren't going on a walk. They really just want attention and love :)
I've volunteered in both their physical space and as a part of the marketing team. Every volunteer and paid staff member that I have interacted with is so passionate and caring— it is truly a positive, uplifting environment for both the dogs and the humans :)
If you ever get the chance, volunteer with Muttville!!

I am a donor to Mutville which I came to know through a friend who spends her precious time on weekends volunteering at the shelter. Having rescued so many dogs myself, I love hearing stories with great endings about the dogs at Mutville. I truly admire the work that its founder, Sherri Franklin, has done. If we could all be like Sherri and the Mutville volunteers, then no dog will ever have to suffer. May God continue to bless Sherri and all of the Mutville volunteers and all the dogs that are in the shelter.

I've been a volunteer with Muttville Senior Dog Rescue for over two and a half years. It's the first organization I've ever volunteered for on such a regular long term basis. I am hooked.
I adopted my first senior dog in 2005 and had no idea he would become my gateway drug to Muttville years later. It's almost hard to describe the feeling when you walk into the open loft and see all these senior sweeties walking around, getting love and attention while waiting for a special person to take them home.
I got more than I expected at Muttville because I’ve made some great friends along the way. When I joined I was all about the dogs, I wasn’t looking to strike up friendships. But the people there are really great from volunteers to the staff. The staff work their butts off and are still thoughtful. As a volunteer it doesn't matter if it's laundry, mopping, poop clearing, organizing and the best, dog walking, they truly appreciate what you do.
I now volunteer in the vet suite and work with two very amazing women who kick off each dog’s journey from their first intake exam through their medical care at Muttville. I also adopted a fospice dog who arrived at Muttville last year, I’m including his picture before adoption and later at the beach. I was Cooper ‘s foster failure and am all the better for it.

Latka (brown doggie in the picture) adapted quickly and is thriving. She is becoming integral member of our home. We hope with her company, our dog will learn to be more trusting of other dogs again. We learned of Mutville through my best friend who took in few herself. Their mission is great all around.
Review from Guidestar
My life forever changed when I learned of Muttville and began volunteering with this organization. Being of service and helping innocent older dogs find homes redefined me and what it meant to give and to work with other people who felt the same way. Muttville is unique due to the spirit and intent of its founder Sherri Franklin who became a Top 10 CNN Hero in 2016. She is hugely inspirational and so are the people she surrounds herself with.
And then there are the dogs. I have taken six of them into my home over the past two years and currently have three. My oldest is more than sixteen, the other two are at least 14 and their energy keeps my energy level high. They are survivors, which constantly shows me how to be a survivor too.
So many dogs with sad stories are freely welcomed into the haven of Muttville and are often in new homes within hours. The time, attention, and money spent on them to maximize their health is without care for their breed or age. Foster homes are quickly found for many dogs in the San Francisco area with loving people while the others live in an open, cage-less environment at Muttville headquarters that is in stark contrast to the high-kill shelters that many come from. Other dogs find their way to Muttville after they are surrendered by owners who can no longer care for them.
Muttville shines far and above the average dog rescue group in so many wonderful ways and works hard to find loving and caring homes as quickly as possible for dogs coming from all corners of California. For me, the best stories involve dogs who were taken to high-kill shelters by their owners to be euthanized. These are always the most neglected dogs as they are usually matted, filthy, emaciated, and covered with tumors. When they are given a detour instead to Muttville, life begins again for them with happy endings and forever homes that make you want to cry.

6 years ago, I adopted my first dog from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. She was about 8 then when I adopted her.. It was the best decision ever. I truly love this rescue group. They have the best rescues for adoption.
And the adoption process was very positive. The volunteers are all so caring. I adore my rescue dog. She is going to be 14 yrs old soon and still going strong. I had such a wonderful experience with Muttville, I decided recently to go back there to adopt another dog who is 13 years young. Sweetest dog ever. It has been 3 months since I have added her to my family. She blends in perfectly.
Please consider adopting these senior dogs from this place because they have so much love to give.

I have been volunteering here for nearly a year and it is as though I've replaced church with hanging out with these amazing animals. The staff is beyond amazing and hardworking, while also being very approachable.
Muttville is such a happy place for dogs looking for a second chance. It is filled with love, compassion and hope to those that for no reason of their own been dumped or just throw away in their golden years.
Muttville is simply the best. They take senior dogs that nobody wanted, and shows the world what rock stars they really are!!! Four THOUSAND lives saved!!!!
Muttville is a happy place, not one of those sad, scary places that are just too hard to go to because of high euthanasia rates. It's an open floor plan with beds and doggy lofts...great pet portraits and even home made dog food! Nutrition is really high on their priority list. A lot of the dogs who come in haven't been well cared for. But that all changes when they get there! They even have a foster hospice program to make terminally ill dogs time here be as meaningful as possible. They care that much.
Sherri Franklin has a vision and her vision is a home for every senior dog. I'm proud to be part of making that dream come true!
I have been with Muttville since it began. I worked as a transporter, a foster and adopted several wonderful dogs. I think one of the reasons Muttville has worked so well as a rescue is because the founder Sherri has thought outside the box, so to speak. She has made the adoption process a friendlier one. There is a trial period of 2 weeks where you can see how you and your dog get along and allow each other to sort of settle in and get used to each other. The volunteers are very wonderful and dedicated and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and helpful..There is a dedicated vet suite for when each dog comes into rescue and that is such an incredible bonus. The fospice program is way ahead of its time too. For dog lovers, there are many possibilities for adopting and volunteering. Everyone can find their niche there...The dogs are treated with love and kindness. Muttville has become a very special place in the dog world and indeed, in my world.
I have always wanted to help the animals. But because where I live. I've always been turned down. Muttville has not only considered my application they approved it. They trusted me. And because of the that they have earned my respect. They go way beyond what you are expecting. It's a their warmth and kindness and encourages you to want the enjoyment of doing more than you were planning on. Wonderful nonprofit.
I had been looking for a dog at several rescues in the SF Bay Area after my terrier passed away. My friend told me about Muttville Senior Dog rescue and I looked them up on the computer. They have a wonderful web site that is very easy to use and I was able to fill out an adoption application right then and there. The next weekend we went to their headquarters in San Francisco. Though they call it a shelter - its not like a City shelter - I didn't see dogs in any cages - they were all out in a big sun filled room with people cuddling and petting them There were futons and lots of dog beds. It bought tears to my eyes to see these wonderful interactions between the dogs and people. There were several volunteers wearing Muttville shirts and they had name tags on which was a nice touch. I spoke with a very nice woman named Michelle and we discussed the types of dogs which Muttville had and who might be a good match for me. A business trip is taking me out of town for awhile, but upon my return I plan to go back to the Muttville shelter. Michelle suggested that I keep an eye on the website as each dog who is saved by Muttville has a profile there which I can read about. What a fabulous group!
After raising many puppies over my lifetime, I realized that I felt the deepest connection to my pets in their senior years. We adopted a senior dog from Muttville. He's old in number only. His larger than life presence in our household keeps us in laughter every day. We began fostering for Muttville and so enjoy getting the dog's personalities discovered and using our skills to bring out the best in them so they may bring joy to their adopters. We do fall in love with them all, proof that Muttville does rescue deserving senior dogs who can give great companionship to their future forever homes.
Muttville is a wonderful organization and has helped so many deserving senior dogs find loving and caring homes. I am very proud and honored to be able to contribute to such a deserving organization. Everyone I have met involved with Muttville has demonstrated a true love for dogs and their care and well being. The dogs that are lucky enough to find their way to Muttville are able to spend their golden years loved and cherished and all dogs deserve that. I can't say enough about the positive experience I have had volunteering for this organization and the invaluable work this group does on behalf of senior dogs.
There are very few non-profits that i would wish to be on the board but i am extremely proud of being on the board of Muttville. The staff, the leadership, the volunteers, the fosters, outreach, senior for senior program - is the best. The organization has so much heart and soul and is runned as a very professional organization!
I have spent over 30 years of my life working in health care--mostly at the safety net level--taking care of those who so desperately need help, but have no where else to turn for help. The first day I reported to Muttville, I knew I had found where I wanted to spend my volunteer hours---taking care of these precious Mutts, most of which truly had no where else to turn for help. I am constantly amazed at, and in awe of the level of support, dedication, sacrifice and passion of the Muttville organization, fosters, and volunteers. There is such a community spirit where everything is all about the Mutts and what can be done to help each one of them live and enjoy the best life they can have--regardless of how much time that might be.
I feel SO LUCKY to work with and be a part of such a caring group of individuals who do this because they love the Mutts!!!!
Muttville does incredible work! Not only rescuing senior dogs, but also providing talks and trainings and building a strong volunteer community.
Today marks my 5th week as a volunteer and I absolutely love it! The volunteers and staff are great - so passionate about helping these lovable seniors! Their community outreach is nothing short of amazing, which is why they are able to adopt out and find fosters for so many dogs. I've done a great deal of research on rescue organizations and if you are thinking of starting a rescue, Muttville is the one to emulate, hands down! They just might be the most beloved rescue in the Bay Area.
What an amazing dog rescue organization! Muttville takes in the dogs that other shelters see as un-adoptable due to their age. Turns out they are so wrong! These wonderful mutts come to us filled with love, though most are kind of battle scarred from neglect. We give them what they need, love, nutrition, veterinary care, more love and then find them a home. We are mostly foster based, so our mutts live in a home until they find their forever homes. In the past 6 years, we have adopted over 1700 "un-adoptable" mutts! WOW! We are growing everyday because of a devoted volunteer base, foster families and donors, all whom make this passionate mission possible.
I love Muttville! The organization and people have passion and such a great cause that I was drawn in and have become a very proud board member. I have never met such a hard working group of people. Our rescues are the most lovely, deserving, and wonderful animals ever. All they want is love in return.
Support Muttville and save old dogs!
We found our way to Muttville in 2009, and haven't let go! We have joyfully fostered, adopted, and donated to this wonderful organization spirited by Sherri Franklin and her growing group of volunteers. Every foster brings their own unique story, and every adoption has broadened our circle of friends. I've driven all over the Bay Area and beyond to find forever homes for these deserving senior dogs, and every experience has been worth it. At the heart of Muttville are the dogs that touch your heart, who've seen better days and deserve that "happy ending," and Sherri who reaches out and brings those dogs and people who care together. We love Muttville!
Muttville finds homes for 7 plus year old dogs that otherwise would be put to sleep in the shelters most of them come from. Many of the dogs are "dumped" simply because of their age and end up making wonderful companions in the new homes Muttville finds for them. The founder, Sherri, has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met and is my hero.
"Muttville...because it is never too late for a happy ending" is the first bumper sticker that I have ever posted onto a car. Why? I am in awe of what Sheri and her dedicated group of volunteers do for senior mutts day in and day out. My failed foster, Hannah, is my own Muttville angel and I cannot imagine my life without her. When people ask how I could have adopted a third senior dog I simply say that they are the most overlooked, but the wisest and most grateful. Thank you Muttville for your support of underdogs and enabling them to have the dignity, love and respect they deserve in their golden years.
I am a donor to and a "client" of Muttville. I can't say enough good things about this organization. Everything they do and every dollar they spend is for the benefit of the senior dogs they rescue. The founder, Sherri, and the volunteers are passionate, thoughtful, successful, and motivated. This organization serves an underserved and often ignored segment of the stray and abandoned dog population -- the seniors. These older dogs are usually the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. Muttville takes them in and gives them the medical and physical care they need, plus a whole lotta love, and helps them find forever homes. The dog I adopted from Muttville was found on the streets with a number of health issues and a timid jumpy temperament. With Muttville's help she became part of our family and is a total cuddle bug with lots more life to live. We are one of over 1700 success stories! Because of our extremely positive experience, and because of the valuable mission of saving senior dogs, our family is a regular donor and word-of-mouth supporter of Muttville. I tell anyone I ever meet who is even considering giving a dog a home (even strangers on the street who admire my precious pup) to check out Muttville first.

Muttville serves the underserved senior dogs who are often the last to get adopted and the first to be euthanized. As a family looking for a dog to adopt, a senior dog was a great fit for us. No puppy training, a shorter long term commitment, and a calm loving dog to welcome into our family. We couldn't be happier with our Muttville dog. She has found her forever home with us and we are blessed to have her. Muttville made sure the fit for the dog and for us was right. There was no pressure, and lots of support throughout the process. Getting to know Sherri, the founder, and some of the volunteers was a bonus. Sherri is a saint with a huge loving heart and an amazing mission. Muttville is a first class organization doing wonderful work. We are proud to be donors, as well as happy clients.
I volunteer for and donate money to Muttville. After spending time as a volunteer seeing the work they do, I'm a convert to the cause. I've seen dogs come in to Muttville in terrible shape - emaciated, limping, dull eyes. Then when I see them again weeks later they are transformed into a happy, engaged dog. They needed good care and love to transform their lives and Muttville is very good at providing that care and love for them. It's an exceptional organization.
I have volunteered, donated money, fostered, adopted, and provided hospice services to dogs at Muttville over several years.
I have done internet searches which confirm that Muttville is the best and most prolific in the world at rescuing senior dogs facing euthanasia. 1750 in 5 years! From every county in California! With 4 paid staff! Nobody else comes even close.
Muttville is great! From a volunteer perspective they are very appreciative, considerate, and patient while interacting and instructing volunteers. Friendly yet professional. Their passion and empathy for their rescue mutts is undeniable, each dog is treated with special care and love.
Mo and Lisa work very hard to keep the place clean and organized, and Caroline makes sure to be thorough when training new volunteers. Overall, I feel very honored to be a part of Muttville. I always look forward to my weekly visit. It's also worth mentioning that the mutts are quite special themselves! They are very lucky to have Muttville on their side.
I currently volunteer as a foster for Muttville. What a wonderful organization! Helping Sr. dogs get placed in loving forever homes and making sure they are happy & healthy in the process. Often highly neglected and abandoned in their twilight years - Muttvile does a much needed job to help get them what they deserve and give people a wonderful companion in the process.
Muttville has saved over 1700 senior dogs that were in danger of euthanasia. These dogs find wonderful homes. They are committed to the cause of saving senior dogs. Reaching out to the public to educate them on the joys of adopting a senior. They walk the walk and talk the talk!

Muttville rescues senior dogs slated for euthanasia. They get these dogs from shelters and private parties, some in terrible shape, physically and emotionally, Muttville works with them, gets them on the road to health and happiness and finds them new forever homes! Everyone involved believes strongly in the mission and it is great to see so many dedicated volunteers. Muttville saves lives!
A great cause with an amazing team! The volunteers I've met have all been caring, kind and wonderful people. Sherri, the director, was the absolute best in working with me to find exactly the right dog "fit" for me when I was looking to adopt. I was impressed not only in how genuine and caring she is about all of the animals, but with the process of ensuring that they have the right how for people and pet. Freckles is just a dream dog and I can't thank them enough for him. But beyond that, I'm impressed with how many deserving dogs they rescue. I'm an active advocate for them in making others aware of Muttville and what they do, and advocating senior dog rescues as your next choice pet. Any of my future dogs will come from Muttville no doubt, and I'm more than happy to help them any way I can. You really see where your donations go and you know by helping Muttville, you really make a difference.

I adopted my dog from Muttville and I am just so impressed with the organization and the volunteers. They are doing such a great thing and with so much love and dedication that you can't help but be impressed. I would absolutely volunteer with them if I lived close enough to do so! I do get the word out to other whenever possible (FB, Twitter, Pinterest, word of mouth, etc) about the organization and the greatness of adopting senior dogs - and support Muttville with donations when I can. Just a fantastic organization and group of people.
Muttville is by far the best rescue I have volunteered for! Sherri runs the organization like a well oiled machine, one of the best directors of a rescue out there. All of my experiences have been fantastic with Muttville,I can't recommend enough if you can volunteer or adopt do it!
Muttville is a truly amazing organization with a just and worthy cause -- to give abandoned and neglected senior dogs a new "leash" on life. They provide older dogs with much-needed veterinary care, loving foster homes, and eventually a new family to call their own! Also, Muttville is a tremendously efficient organization, so you can be sure that your donation will have a tremendous impact!
I volunteer for this wonderful organization because older dogs deserve a wonderful life too! Muttville rescues canine seniors and finds them loving homes. We also support human seniors and match them with a senior dog who can give them love and companionship - a perfect fit!
Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is often the last call someone makes on behalf of an older dog who is scheduled to die in a shelter. Muttville saves the dogs that they can, each & every one of them worthy of a second chance and a new beginning. We adopted a fantastic dog four years ago, found lost in Merced with a gash in his face. He got to Muttville and showed our family how grateful he was. A perfect gentleman with the sweetest personality. Since then, we have fostered many, hoping to help Muttville save one life at a time. Fostering is a nice way to give back to society, especially since these seniors find themselves abandoned by no fault of their own.
I have volunteered with many animal organizations and can honestly say that Muttville is the best of the best. Everyone is dedicated, loving and wants only the very best for the senior dogs. The limited fospice work I have been involved with has been life changing. A truly inspiring group of people. Thank you all.
I have worked with Muttville for 2 years now and I continue to be amazed by this organization's commitment to senior dogs. Muttville will take a senior regardless of their disability or health status. Every dog is cared for in a foster home and gets the veterinary care they need to be healthy and happy. I am honored to volunteer and do what I can to support their mission. I know that every dollar donated is used responsibly. I will always support Muttville in any way I can. Thank you Muttville for caring for our senior best friends. I can't imagine what we would do without you!
It's amazing how dedicated the volunteers are at Muttvile. I don't live close enough to volunteer my time, so I help them with a monthly donation. I know they put it to good use. They don't spend money on overhead and high salaries; they spend it for vet visits, medications, and food for these wonderful senior dogs. They are doing a great job of publicizing the availability of the dogs, and that's resulted in hundreds of them being adopted. But more keep coming. The need for support is great, and I hope others who read this will be encouraged to donate.
