Mission: Mustard seed school was founded to address the educational needs of the urban community , to stimulate and broaden the experiences of city children and to educate students in an intercultural, interdenominational christian setting. Mustard seed school has an intentional mission to the urban poor.

Programs: In 2016-17, mustard seed school educated 264 students in its rigorous academic program that is infused with arts, faith, and service. The school's educational philosophy includes experiential, hands-on learning, and a structured social curriculum. The core of the school's mission is to serve students who are considered the urban poor. At all times, approximately 50% of the students receive need-based financial aid. In 2016-17, the total aid was just under 1. 8m and provided tuition assistance for 134 children. Graduates of mustard seed go on to succeed in competitive high schools in the greater new york/ northern new jersey area.

middle school worship this year was enhanced by an engaging, one-year program to expose students to different styles of worship, including worship from many cultures. This was made possible through a 12,000 vital worship grant from the calvin institute of christian worship with funds from the lilly endowment, inc. Some of the special experiences included a day of learning gospel music with an expert in the field, a taiz service, and a drum circle worship

mustard seed completed the 3m together for tomorrow campaign by raising nearly 4m, including 1. 1m in planned legacy gifts. As a result, the endowment grew to 2. 539m; the academic chairs grew to over 1m; and the building fund to 0. 55m. The endowments will provide funding to support tuition assistance, program enhancements, and staff development.

This private elementary school (preK-8th) in Hoboken, New Jersey, gives $1 million in grants each year to families in need. The program weaves education, faith, art, music and service together in a unique and highly effective way. The result is changed lives, stronger families, and better communities. I toured the school in 2001 (with the Head of School at that time, a friend), was immediately drawn to their mission and began donating to their financial aid fund. A year later I started helping the school raise money, and was then asked to join their Board of Trustees in 2006. I am currently honored and privileged to be the President for the Mustard Seed School Board of Trustees. It is truly a miraculous environment that I hope will be emulated more often around the country. When you see Mustard Seed in person, you find yourself feeling and saying "This is how education should work!". Please visit their website, www.mustardseedschool.org, contact the school for a tour (if you are in the area), and consider making a donation to their financial aid fund.
