Mission: Musicopia's mission is to provide children with the opportunity to learn and play music which inspires dedication, self-confidence, and creative exploration and fosters a life-long involvement in the arts.
Programs: General programming - musicopia is a leader in revitalizing school music programs throughout the delaware valley. Annually, musicopia's professional ensembles and solo musicians present more than 600 programs that reach over 50,000 students and community members. Approximately 81% of musicopia's efforts go to programs and services in low-resource schools and communities, where music education is most deficient. In addition to in-school programs, musicopia has established long-term, out-of-school performing ensembles for students who lack opportunities for both performance and study. Musicopia received donated facilities for music classes valued at 13,000 as of june 30, 2017.
adopt a school - this program brings the many benefits of music education to schools whose music programs have been decimated or eliminated due to budget cuts. The north philadelphia schools that we currently serve are ranked at or near the bottom of the city's ranking using such measures as test scores, incidents of violence, absenteeism, and drop-out rates. Musicopia offers residencies, all-school assemblies, and workshops by selected teaching artists, and an after-school drumline ensemble. This was formerly the bridge to music program.
orchestra - the musicopia string orchestra, an out-of-school music education initiative, serves students throughout the greater philadelphia area who lack creative outlets for expression. Most mso members cannot afford private music lessons, and receive minimal, if any, instrumental instruction in school. A welcoming home for students of various instrumental skill levels, the mso requires a serious, long-term musical commitment on the part of student participants. In addition to the weekly full orchestra rehearsals, supplemental activities include intensive chamber coaching for advanced students and various collaborations with guest performers.
