I’ll never forget the day I walked upstairs to the roof of our building, the starts and stops of new musicians exploring instruments floating down the stairwell. As I entered that…cavernous, garage-like storage room, I was stunned. Here was the most integrated group of our students; black, white, Asian, Latino, many of whom have difficulty staying focused in classes, some of whom have driven each other crazy, completely focused, listening to each other explain how to use keyboards and guitars… sharing instruments without poking and prodding each other. It felt like I had entered a magical zone where all of the stresses and strains and anxieties of their normal lives had melted away, and they were joyous, childlike in their curiosity, laughing with each other, trying new things. It blew me away.
