I am so deeply touched by the work that MWB is doing. I'm grateful that I was given an opportunity to step up and make a difference through an organization that I can trust and put my whole heart behind. I have learned that even the smallest contributions and involvement can make a huge difference to the lives of these vulnerable children.

My husband and I spent a week in Lusaka, Zambia working with the Mothers Without Borders group. We have both done service work with other organizations and are well traveled. This is one of the most beautifully supportive organizations we have experienced. The philanthropy arm (Advancing Life Foundation) of our personal business introduced us to Mothers Without Borders as this is one of the organizations they support. My husband and I look forward to future service projects with them. If you are looking for a mission experience to join or for a group to support, we would highly recommend Mothers Without Borders!

What an experience! This ASEA Advancing Life Foundation expedition to Zambia has reached in and pulled our hearts right up onto our sleeves for all the world to see.

The Mothers Without Borders compound, called the Children’s Resource Center (CRC), is beyond description. What this organization has done to help the disadvantaged children of Lusaka is incredible. We took lots of photos but it’s the stories that tear your heart out. Josephine, aka Auntie Jo, the main lady, is love on legs. These children, 64 residential orphans ages 5-18, and the school kids (850!!) are so happy to be there it just shines out of their eyes and smiles…beautiful, happy, unbelievably resilient kids who’ve already been through Hell and feel like they’ve landed in Heaven on earth.

We spent the first morning touring the grounds (Auntie Jo kept saying “this was built with money from ASĒA- we can’t express how much gratitude we have for ASĒA”- kept thanking US, like she wasn’t the true savior.) We were allowed to watch the classrooms of the primary school in action and were struck by the kids’ enthusiasm for learning. They were all engaged and participating, eager to celebrate their own accomplishments and those of their classmates. Then we split into groups of 3 with a social worker (Fred) and teacher (Precious- they go to school half day on Friday) and were assigned a student to walk home to their residence. We gave them the lunches we’d prepared earlier and ate together (pbj sandwiches, etc) and tried to get to know the kids, but our sweet boy Patrick was very shy, so Fred had to translate.

We walked the route Patrick walks every day to and from school and it took 1.5 hours- they wanted us to see what these kids go through just to come to school. Most of the school kids only eat once a day- lunch at school- but we took extra food to leave with the family for the weekend. Patrick’s mom died and his dad is doing the best he can with nothing and his sister lives with them, who has a 2-month old baby. We were instructed to try to do small chores around the house, but there was really nothing to do because the word “house” is used very loosely in this case. So I snagged that sweet baby (Moses) and held him the whole time we were there. Finally, the truck came to the area and we only had a 20-min walk to catch our chilly, very windy hour-long ride home on the MWB military truck (that the ASEA foundation bought for them) with full and humbled hearts. From our nightly debrief, it was clear everyone was as moved as I was.

Through the course of the week, we were immersed in the culture of the region and had several opportunities to play with kids, visit people in their homes and purchase items made by the women in the villages. Though it was heart-wrenching to see how little they had, the people of Zambia are beautiful, kind and filled with a sense of kinship that I suspect helps them cope with the hard times. And the children…oh, those sweet, beautiful kids would swarm us everywhere we went, wanting nothing more than hugs and attention. We played football (soccer), turned jump ropes until our arms hurt, threw frisbees and read books to them. And not once did we see any dissention or bickering or selfishness, down to the smallest child. The spirit of UBUNTU is lived there every single day; it is woven into their very nature…”I am because we are.”

So many of us say we want to make the world better for those with less, but Mothers Without Borders is walking the talk. We were in awe witnessing the changes they’ve made in the lives of so many vulnerable children. They’ve recognized that helping the kids is the only way to break the cycle of poverty and they’re changing lives, one child at a time.

I had the opportunity to spend a week in Zambia with the Mothers Without Borders organization. It was not an easy week but a completely life changing experience. This organization literally impacts generations. Their help is targeted to make lasting empowering change and we witnessed family after family being given a path to rise up with dignity and strength to overcome what feels like insurmountable odds. The love of the people of this organization and the love of the Zambian people has forever touched my heart. The counselors, the director, the staff are unmatched in their commitment to both those they serve and those who have come to learn to serve. This was my first experience with this organization but I hope it was the first of many to come!

I spent two weeks in Zambia with Mothers Without Borders. It was life changing. I am so grateful for Kathy, Josephine, and the amazing staff. They really helped all the volunteers understand the importance of the charity by showing us the challenges the Zambian people face. I saw extreme poverty, hunger, and illness. The two weeks were spent a few weeks at different orphanages and community centers volunteering with those children. This included changing baby diapers, playing games/ singing songs with kids, teaching English in remote villages, lots (I mean lots!!) of hair braiding, and even working in the fields shucking corn. It was eye opening.

I now know the HUGE impact that Mothers Without Borders does. Mothers Without Borders gets children off the street, out of abusive homes, and creates a secure home for these children affected by the AIDS crisis. Zambian children can receive a quality education, three meals a day, and a safe home. In Zambia, 1 in every 15 people is an orphaned child—resulting in millions of children being vulnerable to abuse, neglect, malnutrition, and death. The donations help rescue children from situations of abuse and neglect, and ensure they receive protection, trauma counseling, education, medical care, love, and the opportunity to dream. I strongly recommend giving to this nonprofit organization in some kind of way.

One thing I love about Mothers Without Borders is their sustainable solutions and use of local culture, staff, and ideas, when addressing local problems. The poverty, AIDS epidemic, trafficking, sexual assault, starvation, and other issues going on in Africa are real. Experiencing Zambia with Mothers Without Borders was eye opening and heartbreaking, but also showed me the power of love and compassion and what an impact that can make. Seeing children get to be children again after the trauma and hardship they have faced is indescribable. Josephine Daka is the most incredible woman I’ve ever met. I love what she is doing for the children in her country and know that she is making a lasting change.

I began working with Mothers Without borders 10 years ago. In the time that I have worked with them, the school has grown from 30 students to 800 students. They have started programs that help girls get an education and learn business, we’ve taught women in villages, how to make items that they might have a small business and sell things to feed their family, we’ve helped plant fields and grind corn that they might be able to feed themselves. It has been amazing to see how this program has worked to help the people in Zambia become more self-sufficient.

Mothers Without Borders focuses on sustainable work in Zambia, Africa. I've met the delightful women who are empowered by the community clubs and microloan education. I've held the sweet children who are being nurtured and cared for by the Children's Resource Center staff. I've felt the difference in the communities served by the feeding programs. Mothers Without Borders is truly doing God's work. Not only do I witness lives changing in Zambia because of the work of this nonprofit, but I have seen positive change in myself.

One of the really great things about Mothers Without Borders is that all of the programs are directed by Zambian locals. The Africa Regional Programs Director, Josephine Daka, is an incredible person, and she directs all Mothers Without Borders programs in Africa. She just recently reached her 20 year anniversary of working at Mothers Without Borders, and she has a master's degree in Social Work and knows a dozen Zambian dialects, giving her the resources she needs to rescue people wherever they may be. She's worked at Mothers Without Borders long enough to be rescuing multiple generations of people, and we're just now reaching the point where intergenerational effects can be observed.

The US team is awesome too! Mothers Without Borders is an organization that does a tremendous amount of good.

The programs they have established for protecting and empowering women and children, feeding orphans, feeding homeless teens and educating and feeding so many are amazing! The Carol Zulu School for local village children who would not have the opportunity to get an education.is growing and is such a blessing in helping them be successful and have great hope for the future. It was an honor to be a part of it as a volunteer.
