Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Foster Care, Human Services, Job Training, Youth Development - Business

Mission: More Than Words (MTW) empowers youth, ages 16-24, who are in foster care, court-involved, homeless or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. MTW believes that when system-involved youth are challenged with authentic and increasing responsibilities in a business setting, and are given high expectations and a culture of support, they can and will address personal barriers to success, create concrete action plans for their lives, and become contributing members of society.

Results: MTW has established a program model that effectively and consistently produces meaningful, measurable outcomes in the lives of our young people. We know that economic empowerment looks different for different young people, but we know that every individual’s path must include getting up each day and being productive. For our Graduates, this is where the “rubber meets the road” – they take the skills and habits they learned in the core social enterprise program and apply them in the next stage of their personal and professional lives. Some youth may be full time students, some may move on to another job, and some may juggle both, but we support them all to be productively engaged in moving their lives forward and taking charge of their futures. In FY18, our young adults were productive: 90% of Graduates were productively engaged in work and/or school at least 15 hours per week. 78% of Graduates were productively engaged in work and/or school at least 30 hours per week. This productivity breaks down into education and employment outcomes for youth supported in the Career Services Program: 94% of youth either had, earned, or were on track to earn their H.S. Diploma or HiSet. Of Graduates eligible to pursue Postsecondary Education (PSE), 51% pursued PSE. 82% of Graduates worked in a full or part-time job. Of those who didn’t work, two-thirds were pursuing education goals. Of youth who worked: 91% held a job for 3+ months, 77% held a job for 6+ months.

Geographic areas served: Boston/ Waltham

Programs: MTW has continuously evaluated and refined our model throughout the course of our organizational history. Presently our programming consists of the following components: SOCIAL ENTERPRISE JOB TRAINING - Youth earn a job working approximately 20 hours/week managing our bookselling businesses that generate over $2.1M in gross sales and source 2.7M books. Our young people learn transferable job skills including customer service, technology, inventory management, as well as critical professional skills such as showing up on time and working as a team. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - Youth have a second, equally important YOU Job - deliberate personal transition planning and case management aimed at ensuring they have all life essentials in place and move on to meaningful jobs and post-secondary education. Youth achieve personal milestones such as obtaining an ID, opening a bank account, and finding housing. CAREER SERVICES - Once youth graduate from the Social Enterprise Job Training program, they continue to be served for an additional two years by our dedicated Career Services Managers in the Career Services Program. Youth receive individualized case management support as needed in areas including but not limited to career exploration, college exploration and applications, FAFSA completion, job searching skills, resume and cover letter writing, and interviewing skills.

More Than Words claims that it spins straw into gold by selling used, discarded books at its retail stores and on Ebay.com. However, its business model is actually based upon deceiving the online buyers.

More Than Words describes books on Ebay.com as being in good condition when they are actually damaged, discarded books from public libraries. Ebay.com defines "good condition" as "A book that has been read but is in good condition. Very minimal damage to the cover including scuff marks, but no holes or tears. The dust jacket for hard covers may not be included. Binding has minimal wear. The majority of pages are undamaged with minimal creasing or tearing, minimal pencil underlining of text, no highlighting of text, no writing in margins. No missing pages".

More Than Words also frequently fails to shipped books and CDs purchased on Ebay.com.

This is a sampling of 77 negative reviews posted on Ebay.com in the last 12 months:
