Mission: To advance the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of monterey bay fisheries.
Programs: Leased west coast groundfish trawl individual fishing quota to eligible fisheries applicants, ensuring continued access and sustainable participation in the groundfish fishery out of monterey bay. Worked with the city of monterey on the purchase of additional individual fishing quota, which will be held by the city, but managed by the trust. Partnered with an observer company to find ways to reduce observer expenses for local fishermen. Moderated a series of workshops to help fishermen understand how best to engage in federal fisheries management. Began development of the monterey bay fish hub project, a collaborative basket of programs to rebuild a local, sustainable seafood supply chain, recruit new entrants, and provide business and financial support services for fishermen. Began developing a strategic plan to improve fundraising, finance, board governance, and staffing. Established connections with local fishing communities, conducted outreach and education to the impacted communities, and established strategic partnerships with like organizations, fisheries supporting businesses, and municipal leaders.
